Let me start by pointing out that most of the negative reviews of this salon come from a recently-opened rival nail salon, just a couple doors north of Contempo on Robertson. They opened about 6 months ago and if you notice, most of the negative reviews of Contempo were written within the past 6 months. Then out of nowhere, the rival salon has so many positive Yelp reviews, all written within the past 6 months! S H A D Y ? I think so! Friends and employees of the rival nail salon will go on Yelp to write bad reviews about all the neighboring salons on Robertson! Two of their employees sent me a private message on Yelp to say something negative about Contempo Nails, and they weren't even true statements! I've even seen the owner of that nail salon occasionally poking her head around the windows at Contempo to check out their business!! It's horrible and awkward.. PLEASE don't believe all the negative reviews you read on here! I've been coming to Contempo Nails for over 2 years and I STILL LOVE THIS PLACE! The owner, Diane, is super sweet and generous. She will give her return customers coupons, and don't be afraid to use the coupons because the employees STILL GET PAID. You can print the coupons out online from their website or just show them the coupon on your phone! All of the employees here are very friendly and welcoming. They are good at what they do whether it's a mani, pedi, gel mani, Brazilian wax, whatever. They really are attentive to making sure that you are happy and comfortable and will bring you a bottled water while you are getting your nails done! I used to be a faithful customer at Contempo Nails.....until..... 1.) I found out that these ladies that work full days doing endless mani's and pedi's were not allowed to eat their lunches at the shop anymore. Someone had complained that it smelled like food there. I don't think it is very cost effective to eat in Beverly Hills on the salary these ladies are earning. Thumbs down for the sweat shop mentality. 2.) Also, Julie used to do the most bomb-ass brows at this place. The girl they had replace her burned me with molten wax AND made my brows gross. 3.) Beware of Contempo Nails on Robertson. A neighbor had told me this was her go-to place for mani-pedi's. On that recommendation I brought a friend on Xmas Eve day. They tell you it'll cost $25 for a mani-pedi. We said that was all we wanted. I've had mani-pedi's where neck and foot massage are part of the deal, but not here. Our total bill for 2 mani-pedi's which took less than 30 min -- and which were VERY POORLY DONE -- was $105. The place is also dirty and the chairs are awful. I was immediately embarrassed for bringing my friend here. I complained about the add-on charges that came out of nowhere but they did not care. Also, it's CASH ONLY. I would never ever go back here and in fact, I would like to report them to the BBB. read more

I've definitely had MUCH better service at almost any other nail salon in LA HOWEVER you can almost always get taken right away and their mani/pedi's do last a long time. For $26 it's not the end of the world but avoid if your looking to relax while getting your nails done. Sometimes I ask myself why I even go back to Contempo. Don't expect any thrills, expect to get treated pretty horribly, and expect to listen to all of the women working there yelling in Chinese at each other. I am sad to write after many years, that my last two visits to Contempo have been grim. While it has never been fancy, they used to do the best job but it is now grubby overall and the furniture is literally taped together. The towels are not looking clean and I didn't see much in the way of sterilization going on. There was a dirty towel next to my chair too. Both times I have gone I have had cuticles snipped so close they bled, by two different people, and chips in both mani and pedi by the next day. I used to go more- maybe this has been going on for a while now and I didn't know. It was great with Diane the owner who was on top of everything a while ago- Maybe she is gone now. Also the past two times it seemed as if the staff were fighting over clients. I was just about to have a mani from one person and someone else came over and asked me if I wanted one and then there was an awkward scene between the two people. I was a loyal customer for 6 months. I stayed because of the great prices. I decided to search for a new place for the following reasons. This nail salon is horrible. Gel nails do not chip if done correctly. I was going for touch up's 1-2 times during the 14 days period every single time. Of course, they didn't charge. I would wait for long periods of time just to get my nails fixed. They do not consider people time and gas to drive there for touch up's. I always heard customers complaining about waiting, chipping nails, and not keeping their appointment time. The customers usually would make a scene by raising their voices out of frustration. This became a normal thing for me to hear often. The salon is also very dirty. They used to give out free gel cards to come back when clients were unhappy. I noticed they were giving the cards out ALL the time. I feel like that's the only reason people would continue to go back. I even returned because of this discount card. They have now discontinued or stopped giving out the cards. This salon is always extremely busy which takes away from the quality of the work. They are always in a rush. I would NOT recommend this nail salon to anybody. I called about 10 nail salons to compare prices. After two weeks of phone calls I finally found an amazing place. I am so happy with my new place that I will never go back to Contempo Nails ever again. If you're looking for new place or your an unhappy Contempo Nails customer. You should try Westside Fancy Nails. I already wrote Westside Fancy Nails a great yelp review. The prices are comparable to Contempo Nails. They are $3 to $4 dollars more for gel pedicure. I split my time between here and the Paint Shop a few doors down...go to the Paint Shop if you don't mind shellin' out $40 plus for a mani, etc (it's worth the tender love and care they give your hands and nails!)...or, if you're on a budget and it's more about the polish change...head to Contempo! And like Ivana I. said...if you don't wanna massage for your neck or feet, just say 'no.' I tend to go here because I WANT the massage. I was jus there the other day and for $36 (not including tip) I got a spa style french manicure, a 10 minute footie massage AND a 10 minute neck massage. You can't beat that!!! AN my nails looked fabu...well, that was until I slid into my car all funny and F'd up the big toe. GRRR. Such is life...i'm better now. :-) Friendly staff...you can always get in. One exception...I went in April on, unbeknownst to me...PASSOVER! Every Jewish woman and their mother and child was in there getting painted and I had to do some serious waiting. Incredibly disappointing experience. They only take cash which is such a hassle. The pedicure was such a let down. You're sitting in this uncomfortably low cushioned chair while they sit on a higher bench so your feet are in the air. I was wearing a skirt so it was an entirely awkward experience. Since it isn't an actual pedicure chair, your feet soak in a plastic wrap lined bucket.......... enough said. The only redeeming factor is that it's very cheap. Came here to get a mani pedi, just be warned that this isn't a typical relaxing getting you nails done kind of experience. There are no spa chairs, and everyone is just being rushed so the employee can try to get the next customer. I've definitely experienced better for the price, but if you are in a rush this is your place! You will be in and out in no time. Right off the bat the woman at the front says after looking me over 'Your here for your brows.' I replied no made a appt for a mani/pedi. Its SUPER CLEAN and the most personal, friendly and comfortable service I've EVER had at a nail spa. Diane, the owner, takes such a personal interest in all of her customers. She works so hard for us to have the best experience...She has even given me the most gracious coupons for free services...and I've turned around and watched her pay her technicians from her pocket to compensate for my services...She's sooooo sweet!...I JUST LOVE HER...I'VE ALWAYS BEEN SO IMPRESSED WITH THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! I came here in a pinch because my usual nail salon was busy and couldn't fit me in and I will not be back. The lady was nice but didn't do a good job painting and I had to mention spots she missed and point out when there were bubbles or uneven color. If I could give this place a zero I would. Everything about this "salon" is a disaster. I told the owner Diane that I needed a manicure. Maybe a pedicure only if it's at the same time because I didn't have time. She assured me that she would have two people work on me simultaneously. After 25 minutes of waiting, someone tried to start on my toes. I told her that since I've been waiting so long Id rather just have a manicure since I was late already. She refused. I told her again to please forget about my toes so that I could have the manicure and go. My toes were fine, it was my nails that's were chipped. She replied that her boss says she cannot do manicures only pedicures. What??? So she proceeded to take off my toenail polish and assured me someone was coming to do my nails right away. 10 minutes later nobody had arrived. I complained to Diane, at which time the lady doing my pedicure asked me to please come back tomorrow because they don't have time tonight. What? So now my nails are not done, and my toenail polish has been removed. Thank you contempo nails!!!! I always knew you had a dirty facility, rude staff and poor business ethics. I tried this place because the google reviews gave it 4.2 stars. BAD IDEA. I made an appointment for 2 ppl - Gel Mani and Pedi for Sat at noon. Both myself and my friend arrived on time and where left waiting for an hour to just get out toes started. We were sitting there with our feet in cold water, when a woman came over to start on one of us. She could not speak english so when we tried to tell her she was cutting us she did not understand. I was having acrylics removed and they had me leave one hand in acetone for the entire hour. No on was checking on us, so I decided the OTHER hand needed the nails removed too and just put both hands in there. I don't know if they forgot the other bowl or just thought I would switch over myself. We were 1.5 hrs into our wait when finally some one started on my friend's hands. We had shown pictures of designs we wanted done upon walking and were told it was not an issue. Now we were being told they could not do something easy like stripes or dots. My friend ended up paying 41 dollars for a plain red gel mani/pedi and the pleasure of a long wait/freezeing water and being stabbed in the toes over and over. After I was told they could not do the design I asked that my acrylics finish being removed and I would just have my nails cleaned up and left natural. The woman quickly scrapped off the rest of my nail and barely touched it with a file. So I paid 15 for a plain red color on my toes, the owner/manager (?) said she would not charge me for the removal. We left 2 hours later, with nothing done the way we had intended or wanted to pay for. ALSO of note - they are a cash business or venmo. I went to Contempo for the first time last Saturday, and it took all the Jesus in me to not toss up the bird and scream, 'take a picture twitches, cuz you won't EVA see me again!!!!!' as I walked out. 2 guys (didn't ask names because I was furious for most of my service) worked on me and they were both pretty awful. The manicurist was the worst, though--and again, don't know his name but he was an older guy. He was ridiculously rude and his work was truly horrible. After having waited patiently for someone to come and do something, anything to me for 25 minutes, he really pissed me off. But I kept the sweet southern girl smile on my face and politely tipped both of them when it was blessedly over. The owner, Diane, came over to give me a coupon for a free mani/pedi; she was obviously aware that I was unhappy. I'd heard a couple people complaining, and I imagined that this was the kind of place people left in a huff all the time. But I saw no need to be nasty; I calmly and politely--with a smile, thanked her but let her know that I wouldn't be returning. Even though my tone was cool, you could have heard a pin drop in that place. Chicks all over the salon looked up like I had just swung off the bathroom door and screamed that the emperor didn't have on any clothes. I didn't know if they were trying to protect the source of their cheap nail services or what, but in this season my wallet still takes a hit from shelling out $32, and consequently, when I sit my butt in a nail salon chair, I better stand up happy. Diane then said that I could give the coupon to a friend or family member. I let her know that I wouldn't be recommending Contempo to anyone. I left, figuring that the $26 price tag for the mani/pedi and the $6 I tipped were worth knowing not to return. Diane looked really upset that I wasn't happy, though, and that stayed on my mind as I looked at my shoddy manicure over the next day. On Monday, I decided to return to have another manicurist do the polish over. I had gotten a really gorgeous color that isn't sold in stores and I really wanted a manicure in that shade. I figured it was really the least they could do to make my manicure *look* good. I braced myself to walk in there and let them know that I needed a polish change, free of charge. BUT. When I walked in, Diane lit up like I was friggin prodigal son. She ushered me to a seat and kept saying that she was so happy that I was back, and that I could have a fresh mani/pedi free of charge. I didn't have time for a pedicure, but I told her that I would have a polish change. She absolutely insisted that I have a fresh manicure, during which she had two people come over and do a nearly 30-minute shoulder/back and foot massage. She insisted that I not pay anything, and when I went to tip, she told me she would take care of that, too. I was completely amazed at the lengths she went to to ensure that I left with a positive view of Contempo. And the massages were ridiculous! I think Tom worked out some knots in my back that have been there since Christmas! Julie did my manicure and she was GREAT. It was beautiful and a far cry from the chop-shop job I'd walked out with 2 days before. When I was leaving, I asked Diane if I could purchase the color I'd used since it isn't sold in stores. She did one better: Went to the back and GAVE me a fresh, unopened bottle. I was blown away at her kindness and dedication to reparation; she was sooo sweet! I literally gave her a hug before I left. She was awesome. Even though I can't change the fact that my first experience there was dreadful, I can say that the mgmt is wonderful and will try to ensure your satisfaction. I REALLY appreciate that, because it's rare that businesses go out of their way to make customers happy. I sent Diane a thank you note because I was and am truly amazed at how lovely she was in trying to make the situation better. I will always patronize Contempo because of the management. Rundown: CONS: No spa chairs for pedicure. They have some big, comfy chairs, but getting the pedicure while the pedicurist is on the rolling cart and having to brace your legs for the entire pedicure is really annoying. Go during the week, because Saturdays are a madhouse and the wait is LONG. Oh, and CASH ONLY. Not the cleanest place on earth, but not dirty, either. Pretty sure they take care to sterilize everything--but I don't know that, so remind them. PROS: Amazing owner/manager, Diane and Julie is a PRO all on her own. AMAZING color selection! I don't know why I always torture myself and come here. BUT, I always leave angry, impatient and frustrated with a hint of satisfaction. What I mean by this is that I end up waiting a nice long 45 minutes or so for someone to start on my nails. They take everyone who walks in after me because they all somehow have "appointments". I always end up threatening to walk out and leave, and then Diane always convinces me that I'm next. When I leave, she always gives me a card for a free pedicure (which means I'm doomed to come back). This pretty much sums up my long manicuring experience here EVERY single time I go back. Just got a private message from the owner. All I can say is, wow! She made no attempt to apologize for her own total lack of concern for my over filed sore nails, nor her flat out rudeness over the phone. She did, however, want to take the opportunity to trash the owner of the new salon I frequent. I found it interesting that most of the nasty things she said about him, were what other yelpers, and even my friend who referred me, says about her. That, plus my own experience, tells me everything I need to know. I'd take a guess that she's not happy with the fact that her former employee, a very kind and easy going person, now has his own place, and it happens to be a better, cleaner salon. But here's the thing, you get back what you put out into the world. Treat your customers well, and listen to their needs? You get happy customers that return and love to spend money in your salon. Plus they'll tell all their friends how awesome you are. Treat customers like garbage, provide poor service in a less than clean environment? people will find somewhere else to go, and be sure to tell everyone all about that, as well. I really truly enjoy coming to Contempo Nails. It is the only place that can get you in and out within 40 minutes, with your nails dry! It's pretty amazing! They are very attentive to their customers and always remember your face, which can be comforting. I do have some of my favorite technicians, Winnie and Theresa. They are just so sweet and friendly. Another great thing about contempo is the massages during your treatment. I have not received a bad massage yet, and they are super reasonably priced. The only reason I am taking off one star is because Diane can be a little pushy with offering her services to you. Also, I would not recommend getting your eyebrows waxed here because last time I did, I left with with one of my eyebrows half missing, not horizontally either, it was cut in half vertically. read more

Been coming here for years. The owner, Diane, is extremely sweet to not only me, but to my husband too, who has only had 2 manis there, but she still remembers him. She has the best selection of OPI and Essie as well as all the gel brands. There's a lot of great staff here. Henry and Long are great for manis...my manis usually last 1 week when they do my nails. My cousin recommend this spot for a gel/shellac manicure and the price is what made me drive across town. When she stated it is $15.00 for a gel nail polish I went the next day to take advantage of this opportunity. Parking was easy, however you must pay for the parking meter. They do ticket, even early in the morning its not worth a $18 ticket not to feed the meter. I walked in the nail salon and was greeted with a hello how may i help you. I looked at the hanging board and pointed out the $15 gel polish. She then sat me down and brought the color chart for the gel polishes, they have MANY colors its like a candyland for coloring. As she started with my service, she said "manicure" in a quick voice and I said yes considering I thought it was included, she did a great job painting my nails. When she was done with my nails, i asked her the total and she told me $28!!! I was shocked considering that the gel polish states $15 on the poster as I asked her why it was so much she said they charge $13 for the manicure... so beware the gel polish for $15 is just for the polish. If you want your nails cut or soak, etc they will charge you for it.. its a little bit misleading but they did do a good job Im just not a fan of hidden fees! read more

First of all, it's shocking to think a store on Robertson in BH looks like this dirty and outdated. I would think coming in for a mani/pedi/massage would be a relaxing experience. I admit that I can be a snob when it comes to mani/pedis. And I guess I could have had unreasonably high expectations for Contempo after reading some of the rave reviews here... But I was not impressed. If I am paying for a mani/pedi, it needs to be better than what I can do by myself at home. ---- Ambiance - 2 stars No massage chairs or Jacuzzi pedicure stations, they have pretty comfy large chairs instead, and the technicians move around on their portable seats and bring you buckets with warm water. The interior gives off a cozy feel. You can tell someone tried to spice up the décor, there are extra cushions and little decorations here and there. The space feels a bit cramped as it seems to be kind of overcrowded at any given time. Ugh, the stench of acetone and polish and acrylic was pretty bad... I had a headache afterwards. They need better air circulation. ---- Cleanliness - 3 stars I didn't love that they just kind of threw clipped nail pieces to the ground, but they do seem to use clean tools. The buckets they use for pedicures are wrapped in plastic bags, presumably a new one for each customer. ---- Quality - 2 stars Polish colors were so so. They have a lot, but most of them are very similar colors. Good quality polishes, though. $26 for a simple mani/pedi may be cheap for the area, but I don't feel like I got my money's worth. I can get a better mani/pedi somewhere else at the same price. -The old polish wasn't removed properly. There are remnants of the old color on the side grooves of some of my nails. -One of the big reasons I go to salons is so that I can get a good cuticle trim that I can't seem to do on my own. Sadly it was possibly the fastest cuticle trim I've ever had, more on the messy side and not very thorough at all. -she had the wandering eye syndrome while poking under my nails. Some of them are now SORE. -They work like speedy machines, rarely speaking to me (though a lot to each other), and were not that attentive--I didn't even get a chance to ask for designs. Good thing I didn't, because the polish application was disappointing. She missed spots. Speedy service is fine, but not when the rushing compromises quality. I've been at super speedy chaotic large nail salons that also manage to do a good job. ---- Service - 3 stars They are very accommodating, though perhaps a bit too much so. I saw a Chanel-clad lady come in and ask that they fix the manicure she had done at another salon. So they interrupted someone's pedicure. (She came back a second time, complaining about a 'hair', aka lint, stuck in the polish. Same person interrupted once again. Not cool.) I was told not to make a reservation because you don't start on time anyway. I could see why--it's crowded almost to the point of chaos, lots of people coming in and out, and I don't think they turn down any walk-ins. Since they try to cram any and all customers into the schedule, it would be pretty impossible to start anyone's reservation on time. *Parking sucked. It took a while to find a spot on the street. I prefer a place with convenient parking. *There's an ATM machine on site, but save the ATM fee and bring cash. read more

I just got my nails done. I can't say that I am the happiest customer. When I walked in, they told me they can see me right away. I was there waiting for 20 minutes till someone started on me. The lady came up to me and asked me if I wanted a massage, I told her no. She saw that I was getting impatient with waiting, so she just started giving me a massage for free. Finally, when the lady started working on me, I felt like she was rushing because there were so many other customers she had to get to. I've had better nail jobs done. I don't know if you could see in the pictures, but there are some bubbles in the nail polish. I didn't bother saying anything because I was already there for a while and had to get home. First off they have the worst parking situation. Might as well save the drama of being blocked in and having to wait, and just feed the meter on the street. She remembers my name even though I haven't been there that often. The service is really great considering the price and location of this place. All the nail techs are nice. No one I know caught fungus but beware!!! Girls and Guys, I seriously am scared because I heard 2 of my friends caught fungus so please ask them to clean tools with alcohol and wash the bath before you use. I went there and this Africian American girl was forcing the lady to clean everything before using it. I was like GO ON GIRL I wish I had big balls like that!! Been coming here for years. Love this place and absolutely love the owner, Diane. She is super accommodating and sweet. This place has every color under the sun and almost everybody does a great job. Further, it's not crowded and smelly like other salons. It is actually quite spacious and aesthetically pleasing, and the furniture is real comfy too. Contempo nails is cheap and good enough. You get in and out quickly, they are efficient, and you get a good manicure/pedicuire. You might have to wait a bit, but it's not too horrible. If you're looking for inexpensive, it's a good way to go. Parking on Robertson can be a giant pain- you might want to look on Wooster or one of the neighboring streets to find a place. read more

I just moved away from LA, but I have to say this place is worth it for Pedicures because they are open till 8:30pm. If you show up at 8:25pm, they will take you in with a smile, no questions asked. I bring my own OPI polish every place I go to avoid the cheap polish that chips off. They use new files and sticks for your cuticles, I believe they are sanitary. Believe me I watch everything they do. I would go here because the hours rock, people are nice, and price is decent for a Robertson Blvd location. read more
