French restaurant in downtown Denver that has five star potential but I just can't get past three stars. When I lived in Paris we always joked about how you could tell if the duck confit had been freshly made or just simply been reheated. The deciding factor was whether or not the skin was crispy (fresh!) or rubbery (reheated). So at Coohills, guess what, the duck confit had the most rubbery blubbery skin ever. That was a big disappointment especially since I could make my own better than that in my home! Yucky. I will give Coohills props for sitting our party of 14 during restaurant week together and efficiently. However, our table service was ridiculously slow serving courses and when we tried to settle the bill. We were at the table for three hours. And it was freezing: half of our party kept their winter coats on to eat dinner. Some of the other bites: the smoked salmon entrée was delicious & I was lucky that a friend gave me a bite. The snail appetizer was prepared ragout style and it was okay. I have to say I miss the garlic and butter of the traditional preparation. My dessert included in restaurant week was some sort of milk chocolate Panna Cotta with cherry sauce. It was pretty awful. Dinner and one drink set me back about $75 during restaurant week. I'm so glad I went and checked it out - it is a pretty venue with cool light fixtures, but I would not go back. read more

I received a gift card from the owner Diane so I decided to take some girlfriends out for dinner. The ambiance is great. Outdoor and indoor seating, private dining rooms, Chef's table, etc. The restaurant seemed pretty classy but there were diners dressed in anything from business suites to jeans and t-shirts. The staff was great as well. Tom the Executive Chef/Owner introduced him self and said hi as soon as we walked in the door. The hostess didn't mind changing my reservation time (even though it was a busy Friday night) when we were running late. Our waitress was very nice, new a lot about the restaurant, and gave us great recommendations (and did I mention she showed us the wine list on an Ipad!). Back to the food! I'm not a big seafood eater but when the waitress brought us a complimentary tuna tartare I had to try it. The bread was delicious; served with truffle salt on top of the butter. It was very light and the flavors were well balanced. For entrees the three of us had roasted chicken, swordfish, and scallops. The scallops were cooked to perfection, but the swordfish was a little fisher than I had expected and the chicken could have used more seasoning. Overall we had a nice time, but I recommend going in for drinks and desserts, or maybe an appetizer. We had the bread pudding which was fantastic. It was sweet but not too heavy, and served with a caramel sauce, whipped cream, and berries (which were skewered with a thin piece of sugar!). read more

Took a small group here to have kind of a networking dinner with people from the non-profit sector. It was amazing! My partner and I had the chicken, yum. We got the scalloped potatoes, incredible. I was too full at the end to try the chocolate dessert cake but I'm going back for that. This was my 2nd time here and I'm really glad we went in. Was here for a big group dinner, and, ah, eh. Even though we had a booking, alongside three other females, we waited for 10 minutes for any attention whatsoever. Our other colleagues who arrived were seated right away though. That was, unfortunate. I had the shrimp which was okay, seafood is always nice but nothing special in particular. Coohills provided me with one of my most superb happy hour experiences. My girlfriend and I were there to use her Denver passport again for 2 for 1 cocktails. For food, we ordered the Waygu sliders and whipped chevre. I also ordered a General Sherman's Old Fashion. I really enjoyed the Waygu sliders and the slightly caramelized outer pieces. The whipped chevre with cherry tomato was also so filling. And my cocktail! Well, it was voluminous and trumped previous Old Fashions. Was it the Rittenhouse or Dry Curacao or all those factors? Let's start with the reservation. I had planned on going to another restaurant for Valentine's day but found that they happened to be closed on Tuesdays, so I gave a call to Coohills in the hope that they had a few reservations available. They were a bit busy so they said they'd call me back and they did within about 10 minutes with an available spot. We were seated in a fantastic location near the window facing the western part of downtown. We both made a comment about how we enjoyed the view. Honestly though, seemed like most of the restaurant had pretty decent seating. I was a bit disappointed in the limited price fixed menu (for Valentine's day). There was a pairing option as well. They were quick to bring out the pairing very closely with each dish, and the wife loved each of her wines. She was a bit disappointed with the amount of wine for each pairing, but I don't think that impaired the evening at all. The bread that came was a sourdough braid of sorts, and was very pleasant with a crisp set of outer layers with a gooey but well cooked inside. The butter that accompanied it had a fantastic truffle salt flavor. Each dish was wonderful, with a good mix of flavors, and all of the seafood was very very fresh. The medium on the beef tenderloin was fantastically tender and more on the medium rare side which is what I prefer. The desert was an amazing array of flavors between a raspberry sorbet to some amazingly strong but fantastic passion fruit truffle to a shockingly good flourless chocolate cake. Overall, we were very happy with the experience and with the service. We'll be going back without question. read more

Awesome service and great for happy hour with friends or a business lunch in the private room! I first discovered Coohills when my boyfriend and I were taking photos of the old bridges and we stopped in for a drink. It's very upscale and modern inside and the bartender was nice and drinks were delicious! Just last week my company held an employee business lunch in the private room. I ordered salmon over creamed spinach with capers and a light lemon wine sauce. It was one of the best salmon dishes I've had and service was great. I'm gluten sensitive so they chef whipped up some almond lace cookies, served with chocolate truffles. Delicious! The owner, Diane Coohill came and introduced herself to us and thanked us. This past weekend I held a birthday happy hour there for myself and 20 friends. Diane worked with me personally to come up with an affordable menu and made great suggestions. My party was in the couch area by the windows, overlooking the cherry creek trail. For an upscale place with the perfect location, I think they have a great happy hour. Dark n Stormy's were the drink of the night for $6 and several friends ordered the pizza's and truffle fries. Dessert was bread pudding and chocolate mouse tort. The day after the party I received a thank you note and phone call from them. This is a family owned restaurant with great customer service and attention to detail! I honestly had never even heard of this place until I was invited here for a work lunch, but what a nice surprise! It was a larger group of people, so they had the side of the restaurant reserved by the windows, but I thought the staff did a great job of making sure no one had any dietary needs since we had a preset menu, they served the group in a timely manner, and were attentive to the little things like empty water glasses, dropped napkins, etc. I feel like those are little things you take for granted when it's just a table for two or four, but it was nice to see that they still paid attention to detail with the big group. And the lunch - yum! We had a chicken/salmon duo plate with some asparagus and scalloped potatoes. I remember thinking that I wouldn't be impressed, but it was tasty all around! The chicken was seasoned and cooked to perfection! I enjoyed the salmon a little less, but it was still really good. Oh my, and the desserts - these were also delightful! I had a berry tart, but there were also some chocolate offerings that looked really good. One of the things I really liked about this place - while it all sounds like a lot of food (bread, salad, entree, dessert) for lunch, the portion sizes were spot on for that many courses. You really felt like you could sample each course (or eat the whole course) without feeling like you needed to be wheeled out of there! read more

The location right on the Cherry Creek isn't well known but that's ok, it gives it more coolness cache. They make the best Manhattan's, barrel aged bourbon, home made cherries, and giant hand cut ice cubes. The appetizers in the bar (full menu available at bar) are tasty, healthy and visually appealing. The drinks are pricey (my only problem with them) but at happy hour a good deal. This place is fantastic. The service was attentive yet paced, the food was simple and elegant... the atmosphere was decadent, and I really don't have anything bad to say about this place. I know others have said that this place is boring and the food is bland. They don't OVER season their food. Some people just want to taste food for the FOOD. I recently visited this restaurant with a group of friends and after reading the menu online I was excited to see what they had to offer. I have to say that upon visiting I was completely disappointed by our experience and by the food. I feel like if you are going to try and operate in the fine dinning industry then you need to have at the very least impressive food and great service. I used to work as a server in the industry so I am definitely sensitive to poor service and honestly that is what we received. Our server was nice but it is clear that he didn't have much experience. I ordered a bottle of wine and he didn't even have me sample it. Once we ordered it he never returned to refill our glasses, I mean not once! When he took everyone's order he missed one of my girlfriends and was nowhere to be found for FIFTEEN minutes after he left the table. I had to ask someone else to please send him over and when he never came we saw him and I tried to get his attention and he told us to hold on. Hold on...okay?? The place was nearly empty... We were given amuse bouche after we ordered which was a nice touch but the dirty plates were left on the table until right before our meal came. I ordered the salmon and when it came it was two TINY pieces of overcooked salmon with shaved cucumbers and smoked salmon, probably the worst salmon dish I have ever had, EVER! The rest of the meals looked decent but were underwhelming given the prices. It just seems to me like this restaurant is not run up to the standards they are trying to attain. The food was indeed delicious, but the pricing was far too high for me. I understand they're trying to position themselves in the competitive Denver restaurant scene, but it felt too pretentious for me, including the prices for the food received. We had our company Christmas party here. And WOW!!! The drinks and appetizers were flowing like the rivers of Capistrano. The staff was extremely accommodating, and we started a massive dance circle by thé dj. Tequila bar was great and we had an ice luge. 10/10 will be back!!! read more

First things first. I am only giving this 4 stars because the menu is somewhat limited and because the prices are quite high. Otherwise the place was great! We had attentive service which is somewhat random these days. The atmosphere is very welcoming and cozy. The restaurant is way bigger than you realized from the outside! A visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art brought us downtown and since it was just after 5 pm when we were done, we decided to wander around and find someplace to get an early light dinner. We, luckily, were there during happy hour and got discounted old fashions. They weren't the best we ever had but warmed us up on a cold evening. I like that the bring a carafe of water to the table so we didn't have to hunt down water refills. My hubby ordered a flatbread pizza off of the happy hour food menu. I couldn't find anything that met my dietary needs on that menu so I opted for a crab cake off the appetizer menu which is made gluten free. I can honestly say it was the best crab cake I have ever eaten. Lots of big chunks of crab meat plus it was moist. At $18 it was stretching the budget for me but after eating it at least I felt like the quality was there to help justify the price. They appear to have a nice private party area in the back that can be sectioned off with a curtain. Keep that in mind if you need to throw a higher end party like a retirement, small office Christmas party, etc. We will likely go back to Coohills at some point and try eating full meals. I think we will be happy if we do. read more

From start to finish this was a great experience. We had an event in the wine room and the service was exceptional. Food was fantastic. I ordered the roasted chicken and it was so juicy. The Chef's special potatoes were addicting. Shayla was so attentive, Diane was super friendly and accommodating, and even the chef came out to make sure everything was good. We have been wanting to try this place for a bit, but since it is tucked away, we would always forget about it. Last weekend we went on a Saturday night for some drinks at around 10 pm. The place was mostly deserted, nobody left on the tables and 2 small groups at the bar. The staff took its time to share with us a menu but they were very friendly. We ordered a beer and a cucumber vodka cocktail which I asked to have without any sugar. The drink was a bit tart but not sweet which was key and the beer selection was ok. The ambiance without people was lacking and the lighting was too light making the place look even emptier. I will give them another try but maybe earlier read more

I have been hearing a lot of this place lately as if it just opened. However to my surprise it has been hear for over a year. It is true fine dinning and it textbook of what you can imagine a new ultra modern high class establishment. The service was over the top exceptional, our server Leslie was amazing and the manager who was filling in for the night was very attentive running food and initiating pleasant conversations, when checking in on us. I will have to admit, sadly we were the only table in there, yet I am sure the duo would have given just as wonderful of experience if it was a packed house. Though this is not an inexpensive night out it sure is top notch service and the cocktails are by far better than any I have had in the Lodo/Larimer square area. read more

HAPPY HOUR: I've only been here for HH a few times--not for dinner, so I can't comment on the full menu. The cocktails I've tasted have all been excellent but I was totally unimpressed with the one small plate I tried. We had planned to order several, just not all at once, but after tasting the first decided to change plans and wait until dinner. The fromage blanc (served with carrots, broccolini, and radishes) is incredibly bland--granted, I know it's a very low-fat, if not fat-free, cheese, but still, it usually tastes like something. Also, the veggies it was served with were quite "rustic." I like rustic, don't get me wrong, but I don't love dusting dirt off my carrots. However, the broccolini, which was cooked a bit, was pretty tasty. I want to come back and try dinner (and eventually, I will), but I'm pretty hesitant re: the food so I keep finding other locations to go to, instead. I know, I need to suck it up--it's just one meal, right? Plus, I only had one dish that I wasn't fond of...that doesn't mean I won't like the rest of the menu! Anyway, until I work up the desire to go back to Coohills for dinner, I'll continue to go and enjoy their wonderful cocktails when I already have a full tummy or am just looking for an after-work pit stop. read more

I have been to Coohills for a few different occasions, a couple of happy hours etc. But this year, I visited Coohills for 5280 and finally enjoyed dinner at the restaurant. The food was amazing and the staff was fabulous! They also have an extensive wine list and great cocktail menu. When it came time to plan my 30th birthday, I had explored several venue options and Coohills was by far the most enjoyable to work with. They offered several options for my reserved space, including a private dining space and a reserved section in the bar. I ordered a variety of delicious desserts for my guests and they were presented in such a beautiful way not to mention, they tasted great! I am still dreaming of the pistachio macaroons!! The staff were so accommodating and attentive. Molly was our primary server and she was so sweet and made sure I had a great evening! Thank you Diane, Molly, and everyone at Coohills who made my birthday one for the record books! I highly recommend Coohills for events, a romantic date night, happy hour, or drinks on the patio!! I went last night for 5280. Now it could have been average food with poor service, but the food was terrific. The service was off, I mention that later. I had the carpaccio as an appetizer, Prime NY Strip and or desert bread pudding. For each, all I can say is wow! Terrific carpaccio! The portion size was just right! Easily 5 star food with 3 star service, so a 4 overall. Our waiter started out really good, but seemed put off when I didn't order wine and just had beer. From that point forward he was put off. When I asked what were in the scalloped potatoes, he said I don't know lots of stuff. Maybe it was because it was 5280 week, but his attitude was noticeable. I was looking forward to Coohills as one of the restaurants I went to during Denver Restaurant week, based on the rave reviews I had received from some friends. I was pretty disappointed. My dining companions both loved their food so 3 stars-they would rate it a 4 but I rated it a 2. We each got one of the 3 appetizers offered and we were all pretty happy. I guess the snails were great but I didn't try them. The main course is where the big difference in opinion came between me and my dining companions. I got the braised beef short rib, as did one of my friends and our other friend got the salmon. I had a small bite of the salmon and it was good. I personally did not care for the short rib. The flavor wasn't there and on top of the pomme puree was too much mush for me. My friend that also got the short rib loved it-so... Dessert was a bread pudding. Not really a fan of bread pudding but again such rave reviews I thought something was going to wow me. Nope. Not good-not bad, just nothing exciting. Service was fine but not exceptional-none of us were offered another drink or coffee with dessert but the waiter was personable and helpful. Considering the price of the normal menu and the underwhelming experience I had during restaurant week, I wouldn't come back for dinner. The happy hour looks encouraging-I may give that a try. If you have a super finicky eater, like me, maybe try another place first. ;-) read more

Let me lay the scene... Birthday dinner... Our tradition has been to try something new and something delicious every year. This year was mediocre at best. The restaurant itself is very nice. Not too pretentious or rabidly trendy. The service was fantastic. Our appetizer and wine was amazing. Really delicious. The bread and butter was melt in your mouth good. Then came the entrée and desert. And it all went south. The beef short ribs were dry and uninspired. Flavorless combinations of food that frankly could have used salt. The desert was blasé. An odd mix of candied fruit, lemon custard and some sort of crunchy icecream thing. 150 dollars later we left a completely empty restaurant on a Saturday night. I have been here three times in the past two weeks - two private gatherings and once for Beats on the Creek for an Allman Brothers cover band. I love the atmosphere. It is a beautiful setting and they take advantage of the location nicely. Service is very friendly. Service for food is well paced, drinks/bar service a bit slow. I have had a steak all three times and was very pleased each time. Tender and tasty. In observing the fish portions, they appear small, but everyone assures me delicious. read more

Like fantastic food, delicious drinks, and stupendous service? Coohills is one of the most wonderful finds! It isn't in the heart of downtown, so it doesn't have the crowds. But the food is incredible, and the cocktails look amazing. We went for a tasting menu with wine pairings - a MUST if you're a foodie! You have a choice of 5, 7, or 10 courses. We picked 7, and it was more than enough. The wine pours were generous, so after 7 glasses we were glad we took Lyft downtown! Each course was so beyond delicious. Even for the ones we normally don't like (me: vegetables, my wife; escargot). And the service was phenomenal! Not only was Stella the most wonderful, personable, attentive server we've had in a long time, but to have Jason, the master chef who came up with the tasting, come to our table twice to deliver a serving and to check up on us was so special. He recommends sitting at the chef's table so he can interact with you more personally. And of course the manager checked up on us as well, both in a personal visit, as well as a table glance every now and then. And this was a Friday evening reservation! In the warmer months they open up to the outside and there are mini-concerts by Cherry Creek. While costly, so save for a special occasion, the food is well on par with the snooty restaurants, but these guys are so approachable. We will definitely be back for several special celebrations. We'll also come for the cocktails and small plates/charcuterie for more affordable options. This place is truly a find. Do yourself a favor and check this place out next time you're going out for a night downtown. read more

Gorgeous scene. Spacious and charming, with a sprinkle of understated opulence. They have a fantastic private room - though I do wish you could still look out onto the rest of the restaurant - may be a little too private for my taste. The service is solid and well-timed, and they serve excellent drinks - their wine suggestions have been impeccable so far. The food isn't as flavorful as I think it should be for the price, but that seems to vary depending on what you order. All in all, I'd say it's okay - I'd go back for drinks with friends and to the bridge view at sunset. read more

Wow just wow! Coohills last night was probably the best dining experience we've ever had. We sat at the Chef's Counter and ordered the 5-course tasting menu. Chef Coohill checked on us several times during our 2 hour 45 minute meal, making sure we were well taken care of and personally explaining every single course. We have eaten at Eleven Madison, Sushi Nakazawa, and Noma (all of which are great), but never have we interfaced with such a nice chef until Coohills. Overall, every member of the staff was nice and down to earth. We also had the pleasure of meeting Diane Coohill. We started with two amuse-buche: shrimp ravioli and one crab cake (Chef pointed out that he did not use breading). We proceeded with large scallops, seared foie gras, a salty egg dish, and veal with lobster. The dessert was the praline hazelnut mousse with coffee sorbet. Every dish was amazing! You will be remiss if you live in or are visiting Denver without coming here! read more

We hosted a corporate event last night - it was amazing! Our personal staff for our corporate presentation in the wine room was exceptional. The room was intimate, the AV equipment was terrific- which in restaurants can be somewhat of a challenge - but not a Coohills. Our food, our servers who were constantly ahead of any request but not obtrusive during our presentation were all outstanding. WOW! I am so impressed with the level of service Coohills demonstrated on Saturday night, for a wedding I had planned with the Owner, Diane Coohill.. Everything was truly perfect. There is honestly NOTHING I can say to give "constructive criticism" because you all were absolutely perfect. Everyone was extremely friendly, helpful, generous, and loving. They all were so sweet and did EVERYTHING they could to make sure our bride and groom had a wonderful wedding day...which they did! Diane, was a dream to work with from day one. I knew we would get along fabulously, but she went above and beyond with her time, passion, and dedication to making this event such a success. I wish all restaurant owners were as fabulous to work with as she was.. The entire staff was phenomenal. I was sooooo impressed with all of them - from the bartender to the dishwasher to Molly to the GM. Everyone was on their A-game and I could tell how much they cared and wanted to make sure everything went well. I really could go on and on about how fabulous Coohills was.. I made a reservation for our anniversary, and even confirmed it 3 hours prior to going there. When we got to the restaurant the hostess kept insisting that we sit at the chef's table, "it's an amazing experience".
