It was time to stop and eat for lunch while we were on our way to New York. It did the trick and we got our fill up. When we walked in, the staff took our order right away and it didn't take long for our meals to come out. I got the chicken quesadilla with a strawberry cheesecake milkshake. Yum! The rest of the crew got burgers and fries and they enjoyed it as well. Calories don't count here...lol! I have seen many of the locations on the road before and had to find out what it was all about. The bathroom wasn't clean and maybe it was an off day since the rest of the place was clean. This was hands down one of the worst drive-thru experiences I've ever had. Pulled up and was immediately uncomfortable--one employee was wearing a ski mask at the window. In a DRIVE-THRU. No explanation, no professionalism, just straight sketchy. All three employees had terrible attitudes. Rude tones, zero customer service, and acting annoyed that someone even showed up. No greeting, no basic courtesy--just attitude from start to finish. Simple questions were met with short, nasty responses like I was wasting their time. If you hate dealing with customers, maybe don't work a drive-thru. Unprofessional, uncomfortable, and honestly makes you question what kind of operation is being run here. After leaving a TERRIBLE experience at Fuddruckers down the road (we literally while we were ordering which is something we have NEVER done). We came here and the cashier was the SWEETEST!! Slow service isn't an issue with me as long as the order is accurate and properly prepared. There aren't any Cookout locations in my home region, so I do like to get Cookout when traveling in the South. I assume they do not pre-cook the order and that for me makes it okay if Cookout is not fast with service. Preparation at this location was not as good at other locations I've been to, the burger was overcooked, borderline burnt, a messy burger is fine, but this was sloppily put together. They seemed well staffed, so either they just don't care or maybe they have newer employees that are still learning. The employees I interacted with were courteous, by 2023 standards. My biggest issue was the order was not accurate. I take some of the blame because I didn't no check the order before I left the drive-thru. When we got to our hotel, we were missing an order of large fries and the Cookout sauce for the onion rings. Traveled all day so I didn't feel like driving back. Coincidentally, another person staying at our hotel walked in minutes after us, and their order was missing fries, and the burger was not prepared how they asked. They did go back to get the correct order and the missing fries. I'll go back and give them another try, but next time, I'll check everything before I leave. If they fix the above deficiencies, this location could be a 4 star on my fast food scale. read more

All cookouts are NOT created equal! This is by far probably the worst one I've been to so far. The tables were dirty, the trash was full, and the ice was piled up around the soda machine. Onto the food - we had a big order, totaled to about $90. None of our stuff was labeled so I had to literally open up each burger and look under the bun to see whose was whose, annoying to say the least. Milkshakes weren't labeled either, I had to all but taste them to find out which was which. Onto the taste of everything, WHACK! I almost thought I had COVID again with a loss of taste because it was super blah! I had 2 burgers and neither were anything to call home about, neither was my milkshake or hush puppies. The service here is awful. My husband went inside and placed an order at 8:34. He was given the wrong burger and it took 50 minutes and multiple follow ups to get the new one (literally just got it at 9:15). Despite the service inside, cars were going through the drive thru while people inside were waiting ridiculous amounts of time for food. When it was all said and done there was no empathy or any offer to make it right. I'll be reaching out further but I'd recommend visiting any other Cook Out but this one. read more

This is the slowest Cook-Out I have ever seen. We waited in the drive thru for 45 minutes due to us being stuck in the line only to find out that this cook out doesn't have 2 lines and the line was in fact wrapped 2 times around the building. The line was so long that it started blocking traffic almost causing an accident. Needs a serious renovate for the parking and lines to be shorter. read more

On July 8, 2021 Order # 1084 (supplemental order 10088, we only received part of the order - one additional chili, mustard and onion hot dog was missing. Amber was very nice about it and she quickly provided us with the missing dog after we paid for it- however, when we got home, the original hot dog container only contained a bun. So very lucky we checked and asked for the second hot dog - otherwise I would not have had anything for lunch that day. While the food here is good, service is usually quick and Amber was very professional, this is not the first order they have screwed up. I generally can forgive a few errors or even a minor one - this one had to be shared. read more

More often than not they get our order wrong and we have to go back in and get it fixed. Rather than asking us in the drive-through "is that all", "is that all", perhaps you should focus on getting the order correct. You are making us not want to come here. This location is less than a mile off I-95 but there's no sign to let you know that. I just luckily stumbled upon it while exiting for a Hardee's further down the road. That $5.25 is ridiculous. I see the appeal for it. I ordered a double burger, chili, onion rings, and a coke. Unreal. Unfortunately, the restroom was disgusting. Like gas station at 1am disgusting. Lots of the tables needed to be cleaned and a few trash cans were full in the dining room. One of the Coca Cola dispensers was out of syrup but since it was later in the evening no one noticed. Wow, not great. The food wasn't the best compared with other cook outs, but I deviated from my usual order and both of our shakes were wrong even though they were correctly labeled on the cup. Peanut butter fudge cheesecake became peanut butter banana. Peanut butter banana Heath blueberry became peanut butter fudge heath blueberry cheesecake. And the bathrooms... Wow. Neither had any soap. The ladies room was out of toilet paper and the paper towels were left on the sink instead of replaced in the machine (so they were just wet). There was what I can assume was fecal matter on the wall surrounding the toilet, dust on the bowl cleaner, so I can only guess how infrequently it was used. With the milkshake mix up I wouldn't have even bothered to leave a review, however, if that's the state of the bathrooms, I wonder about the employees sanitary habits and food safety. Cook Out has been one of my favorite fast food restaurants since about 2010 when I first went to college in NC. BOY, was I happy when they got a location in Richmond but I was even happier when this one popped up in Ashland which is closer to me than the RVA location. The thing about Cook Out is that you get more food (more choices!) for such a small price and it's better than some other Fast food restaurant value meals. It's not gourmet style food but it is definitely great when you're on the road or want something yummy and cheap late at night when EVERYTHING else is closed. The milkshakes are my favorite and they are probably one of the best items on the menu. They have SO many flavors and options. Don't expect to drink this milkshake through a straw, though - it's so thick that you'll need a spoon! In reference to this location, I haven't had any bad experiences with food. Everything I've ordered has been pretty great. The only thing concern I have that the employees are not necessarily friendly. They barely make eye contact and I've been rushed a couple of times while placing my order (I get the same thing almost every time). I've had to ask for straws and napkins multiple times (which should be a given - if I get a drink, I need to be able to drink it). However, this hasn't stopped me going back. Location: there is a small parking lot, and the drive thru is long enough for a few cars. There is an inside dining area where you can place your order and sit down. read more

Finally stopped here after seeing signs all the way up I95 from South Carolina for Cook Out restaurants. Lots of menu choices, and burgers and sandwiches are retro small so you don't feel as guilty about ordering a shake with your combo tray! Try the fresh banana shake, you won't regret it. Plenty of options for kids. Super fast, close to the interstate, and at this location the service was terrific. Oh, and they are open SUPER late. Worth a quick stop on a long trip. read more

Cookout is a great place to get quick cheap food that's good. I love the platters they have. No one can beat their 5$ platters. They have really good milkshakes too. The hamburgers here are amazing I could eat them all day long they are half the price of Fuddruckers up the street. I love the milkshakes it's one of the few places anywhere that you can buy a chocolate malt. The only negative comment I would say is you're pretty much forced to buy a combination and the combinations are Bizzarre it's too much food and not the food that I would want to put in a combination and if you buy a burger and a shake without a combination it gets expensive. I supperjumped here, taking my Cook Out food to Chick Fil A to eat because my son can't eat peanut oil. So I missed any potential issues with any bathrooms. Tried the quesadilla for the first time, a big winner, and the hush puppies are reliably the best in the business. Onion rings great as well, and always an Oreo shake.
