My go-to late night eatery. Very cheap and decent quality food. The milkshakes (which has mostly the consistency of ice cream) are always on point if you know the right flavors to get. The only problem is the place gets rowdy, dirty, and packed on the weekends sometimes which makes it impossible to eat there. Also, ask for the cookout sauce. It makes anything 5 times better. I love the chicken quesadillas with the sauce and sometimes just get a tray full of quesadillas which sounds gross and probably is for a lot of people, but I love it. Late night? Craving fast food? Cheap? Check. Check. Check. I would probs choose Cook Out over McDonalds, Taco Bell, etc. any day for a late night food run. Mostly for their milkshakes. Oh my god their milkshakes are to die for. But they also offer a great variety of burgers, hotdogs, quesadillas, finger-fast foods, etc! The infamous Cookout Tray is only $5 in which you have the option of a main dish, two sides, and a fountain drink (or a shake for $1 -- which is so worth). = perf for a college student's budget haha I mostly come for the shakes though -- I could finish like three in a sitting. Great milkshakes except for the fact that my sweetest friend didn't get her goddamn milkshake.

Pretty sure this place doesn't really need a review, but whatever. Normally I have reservations against restaurants that try to offer way too much variety in their menu since that usually is a sign that they can't really master anything, but I have to say Cook Out does a good job with making sure all their offerings are good. While they don't necessarily have the best burger, or the best chicken tenders, or the best barbecue in town, they're still good here and what's better yet is that it's hella cheap. The shakes are probably the highlight of this place. They're incredibly thick to the point where it's almost impossible to use a straw, and they have a lot of great flavors. read more

I ordered an unsweetened ice tea in drive through, I get a sweet tea, I go in and attempt to replace my tea at the self service soda area, WTF only sweet tea there, I just threw the cup away as the line to order was 8 deep with only one cashier. It was just okay, nothing spectacular or to be excited about. It's just food, basic food. It was my first time to the cook out, and granted that I'm an out of towner, but this food wasn't all that. I do love the variety, but the menu is so full that you don't have enough time to get into it if you are in the drive thru. The options are almost endless and the pricing is perfect, the portions...lol. I got three little preschool chicken nuggets as my "side". They tasted like cafeteria food. The cashier was extremely nice and extremely WRONG. She rung in the order correctly but it was wrong hell when we checked it. That's such a hassle at 2AM. Cookout is great late night junk food spot. However I always crave nuggets and bbq sauce after a night of being out and they ALWYAS forget my sauce. With their food being so cheap it's obviously not good quality and their nuggets taste terrible without sauce. read more

You get what you pay for! I got the BBQ pork plate...which was like an ice cream scoop of a form of what I think was pulled pork, soggy fries, and actually decent hush puppies. My husband was looking at the left side of the menu that said chicken breasts but then it read like they could be sandwiches. He asked the girls at the counter if the chicken breasts were sandwiches and they both had to ask the manager!!! I will admit that I am BBQ biased as I live in Santa Maria, CA...as in Santa Maria Style BBQ. I guess this place is good for poor college kids who are sick of ramen! read more

I love this place! I have only been once but I got a variety of menu items for me and my 3 kids to share. The prices can NOT be beat, its so cheap! And you get so much food for your money! Not only do you get a lot, but its pretty good. I would have preferred the BBQ sauce a bit more tangy, but the pulled pork was delicious at any rate. I hear the manager is a nice guy and the service I experienced was wonderful. They always have a line of cars wrapping around the place, sometimes stopping traffic on Emmet Street! But they are fast and keep it moving. I will definitely be back. Edited to add: Maybe I have ODed on this place, but the last couple times I went, I wasn't feeling it. The pulled pork BBQ went from good, to bad, to worse. Everything else is ok, the burgers are kinda tasteless though. Hands down, the best thing about this chain is their killer milkshakes, in every conceivable flavor. Another perk is that they have foods not available on other fast food menus, at least not at any one store--quesadillas, corn dogs, and my fave, the BLT. First time at a cook out and glad we dined in the first time. Lots to choose from! Had the grilled chicken sandwich, tender, juicy and no gristly surprises. Fries were actually really good. Eh burgers lacked seasoning even with all the extras that come with it. I had the Cookout burger with chili, cheese, onions and mustard. The fries gained one star and the shakes, of course, was good. Many have raved the Banana Pudding shake and yes, it's like home. read more

Folks this place is not good.. Long lines and a crowded parking lot do not equate to good food. In Charlottesville (tragically) it means mass quantities of mediocre food at a cheap price. The burgers was dry and tasted like Burger King (actually Burger King is better); the chopped pork is devoid of flavor; the french fries greasy and the "Premium" milk shakes are flavorless. Patrons appeared to be families and UVA Students.. The up side? Cheap.. Four people with burgers, chopped pork, milkshakes, multiple orders of fries and throw in a hot dog and we walked out for less than $25 total. If the objective is to fill one's stomach for the least amount of money possible not caring about the taste then Cook Out is fine. read more

The minute I tasted the barbecue, I was hooked. Add in the fact that prices are VERY reasonable and I'll definitely keep coming back. Absolutely LOVE the shakes. Add in the fact that this place has late night hours and it's easy enough for me to overlook the unpleasant aspect that some of the table tops might need to be wiped off before use. Most of the food is surprisingly good for fast food and the fact that pretty much everything is wrapped in foil assures that your food will surely be hot. The young man working at the cashier wearing a non cookout uniform (presumably some sort of manager) was unbelievably rude after I told them that they made my order wrong. We got lunch in from Cook Out at my work today and it was great. The BBQ sandwich comes with coleslaw already on it, so that is a BIG plus (no ordering extra sides to get my BBQ with cole slaw). The barbeque it self was very tasty, on the spicy side, but had great flavor. I will certainly try this place again. read more

Always a great place to stop by when I visit UVA. The food is very inexpensive, and it's a great, relaxing place to eat with friends after a hard day. I always get the tray (the onion rings and coleslaw are delicious) along with a fancy milkshake. I've only tried the banana pineapple but I'm sure all the other milkshakes are just as great! They also are open until very very late, so if you're craving food at 3 AM, this is hands down your best option! read more

Cheap price, low quality food with uncomfortable dining furniture. That pretty much says it all. If you are looking for college priced food that does nothing more than make the hunger pains go away come here. The service is friendly but unfortunately that is not enough to overcome the confused menu offerings and the terrible layout. I had the "big heavy", or something like that, which seemed small but turned out to be two very thick grilled burgers, loaded with stuff. This was a very filing, tasty burger which did in fact taste like you'd get at a cook out. Worth driving across town for this alone. I wasn't a fan of the hotdog--too much onion and slaw, not enough dog. The shake was tasty, but more like a concrete that you'd get in the midwest than a shake. Went through the drive thru. Very prompt service. Definitely better than your McD, BurgerK, etc. A standard cheeseburger, large fries and Hershey's shake came to $8.03. I'd say the shake was the highlight, very thick, but not the best I've ever had. The burger was good. W have eaten at a cookout in the Memphis area. We loved the burgers and the two sides and a drink at a great price. The. Burgers were great and the shakes wonderful. The hushpuppies though were burnt and the onion rings ok. Not as good as the Memphis location. Everytime we go, there is a mistake with with one of our meals. This time my son's meal was missing a topping. HQ needs to fix this as seems a system wide problem. Otherwise - like the chain and love the variety of yummy milkshakes. read more
