Wow just wow. Today was my first time at the famous "Cook Out" and I love it. I went with my older brother and grandparent. The first thing I noticed was the setting of the restaurant. It was so clean and beautiful. Also, something that surprises me is when you order your foods they speak it into a microphone, and it records your items. The best thing about Cook Out is how incredibly cheap the foods was. When my grandparent saw the ticket they were very surprised that all our food was cheap. Their burger was just great. Went there several nights ago for a "quick snack" and got a hot dog and a vanilla shale (one of 40 flavors). It was good, delivered fast, and the price didn't​ break the bank. So - today I returned for lunch and they have a $4.99 special that gives you great​ choices of the main product (like a ​burger​, chicken, hot dog, etc.) + one side item + drink. Can't beat it. A special "hats's off" to Emma who was very pleasant​ and guided me through the many choices - but she grabbed 'hold of exactly what I was looking for and made an excellent recommendation. They have Cheerwine there and if you haven't tried it, you should! New place on highland and I had to see what all hype was about. I felt left out because I've never even heard of Cook Out before lol As expected,the line was literally down the street! Hats off to the staff at Cook Out for how fast they process orders and how clean they keep the place. I hardly ever eat fast food but when I do, in most cases the fast food restaurants are not very clean and the garbage cans are overflowing. On both my visits to Cook Out I've seen the staff wiping down tables, picking up trash and checking the trash cans. That's just not very common around this area. Oh and they are all so friendly! That's another positive you don't get at other fast food places around here. The food is above average for fast food and a great value for your wallet. So far I've tried a couple different burgers and they are much better than your average fast food burger. On my first visit I had the Regular Burger and it was good but the patty is not very big. The toppings were surprisingly fresh and tasty, nice crisp lettuce and tomato. The fries were great! I didn't expect them to be so good. They appeared to be hand cut but I would be really surprised if they were. I had a chicken quesadilla also on my first visit as part of my combo and I was not impressed. The chicken was almost nonexistent and looked like it may have come from a can. My second visit I got the Big-Double Burger and it was better than the Regular Burger I had on my first visit. The hush puppies were good but no match for Soul Fish or Flying Fish quality hush puppies. They were sweet but very little seasoning, more like fried cornbread. The corn dogs are your typical frozen food variety, it was ok but definitely not something I'll order again. On both visits my meals were $6 with tax. Although not the most incredible meal I've ever had it was better than I expected on both visits and the service was way above any fast food chains around here with the exception of Chick-Fil-A. My challenge to the Management team at Cook Out is to maintain your customer service level and continue what you've started and maybe this thing called customer service may just catch on around the city. Now, Highland Strip and U of M, welcome to Cook Out. For $5.99? you get it all, you get it your way, you get more choices for sides than you can imagine. How about Pups, dba hush puppies as a side, how about a 'bacon wrap', how about a'chicken wrap' - AS SIDES, are you kidding me, no, believe it folks. If you don't, simply drive by at lunch or dinner - the cars are backed up down Highland trying to get in this place. It is crazy had popular this has become since their opening just a short while ago. And, did I mention, their dogs are .99c - yes, and, damn good dogs. I feel a bit of guilt because I put a tip about vegetarian options when they first opened. I feel guilt, because the vegetarian options are not good. We ordered one of these 4.99 eat your heart out combos with a strawberry shake upgrade. In regards to food: The hush puppies are fried cornbread with no seasoning or the seasonings were hush AF. Grilled cheese is two flipped over hamburger buns with The kraft cheese slice you get in the plastic wrap barely melted. Quesadilla wasn't much better. Onion rings were a circular version of the quiet puppies add a hint of onion powder. The milkshake was luke warm. (I'm just as confused as you in reading this.) it did taste fresher than McD, but why was it frozen but not cold. Right The customer service wasn't great, but I'll say that it appeared like they hired too many people to take care of the hype/fire. The employees were crawling on each other practically which would make me unpleasant as well. Danvers was better food Staff was very friendly and the food came out hot a fresh. Food is just average fast food. Sysco style chicken fingers and onion rings as an example. Great food! Great value! OK. We've been wanting to try this place for months and finally got a chance tonight. Needless to say the place was HOPPING!! We couldn't even turn into the drive from the turn lane because the cars were lined up turning right and the drive through window was backed up that far!!! The inside was nice, clean, and lively. Lots of college kids and families with kids. The workers at the counter were very nice and friendly. We ordered burgers with two sides each. She had sides of chicken quesadillas and fries and I had sides of onion rings and a bacon wrap. At $4.99 each for a combo it was an excellent value. The burgers were really good - charbroiled flavor. The fries and onion rings were good, and the quesadilla and bacon wrap were pretty good. For an extra $1 I got a good size Reese's peanut butter cup milkshake. It was the BOMB!!!! I am not the type of person to really take on or get into doing Yelp reviews. However, the service, or SERIOUS LACK THEREOF I received at this location after ALWAYS frequenting the Cook Out locations around town, going as far as always tipping them and thanking them for providing a place for me to get a warm meal, nagged at me until I had to write something. I work overnight on the road and wouldn't have a warm meal many times if not for Cook Out. So to say I appreciate them is an understatement as I got out of MY WAY to thank and tip and basically say, 'IT'S MY PLEASURE' to be your customer.... BUT THE CAREFREE and basic 'leave us alone and go somewhere else' type attitude I got tonight, WHILE EVEN GETTING WORSE upon having to return to the store after my milkshake which was supposed to be mocha was a white as drywall making it not even look vanilla, & literally wasn't EVEN halfway full! Now I have no problem paying $7 for two milkshakes from what I typically get here, but is just an example of what one or a couple 'who cares' type employees can do to the rep of an establishment, & PERMANENTLY lost my business from being this bad, as I would rather have nothing or have a gas station hot dog rather than bother with the 'you should be waiting on us' type worthless employees they have working here! Totally revising my review. When they first opened, they were really terrific. Recently, though, they have cut the size of the portions for the trays *dramatically* while the prices have remained the same. The food has become sub par, and they clearly don't change out their fry oil very often as the taste on everything fried has been way off the past three times we're ordered - and this has been over the past several months. I talked with a manager about it, but clearly it was a matter that went in one ear and out the other. Everything recently has also been really tough. Four visits ago, my daughter and I both had a three-four day stomach bug that started within 12 hours of eating Cook-Out. Highly unpleasant. The last time we went, I was SO looking forward to the seasonal egg nog milkshake. Returned home with it and found that it tasted of sour milk. I am really, truly done with this place, and I will not - ever - return unless I am in Murray, KY, where they are headquartered. Even then, I would be reticent to give them my business. I've been a few times now so I've given it plenty of chances and I will not be going back. It's overhyped especially for the wait you have in the middle of the street to get your food. The staff is rude and they have bad customer service. I've already had to contact corporate headquarters twice about the service I've received. Corporate gave me a coupon one time and that remedied one situation but I'm not sure how they will fix the last one considering it involved a TN health code violation. YIKES! The milkshakes are too hard so you can't really enjoy it until it melts into an uncomfortable, unenjoyable liquid state. The food tastes a lot like what my dad grills so it's nice if I'm too lazy to go home to visit him. You have to pay extra for tomatoes on your burger which is weird. The Cajun fries are good but the regular fries have no flavor. You're going to need a lot of ketchup! I will end on a positive note and say that one time they gave me some of the best coca-cola I've ever tasted! I've been waiting for Cook Out to come to Memphis. When I visit family in North Carolina it's my first stop. The food is good and cheap. We ordered one Cook Out tray with a double burger, beef quesadilla and bacon wrap for the sides, and a mint chocolate chip milkshake. The other Cook Out tray had two chili cheese hot dogs, a corn dog and fries for the sides, and a chocolate milkshake. Our total was $15! For months I watched them build this "cook out" and I've always wondered about it. But I saw a great review on this place stating the food was excellent and the price was great. So while driving past it one day, I noticed the customer's line was actually in the right lane of the street traffic. Now, I thought any place that could attract a crowd, like that was worth joining the excitement. I couldn't wait to place my order and test the food. I can't assure you that everything is worth a fuss. But when I bit into my burger, I was hooked for life!!! This burger, my daughter told me was so unique because it's freshly prepared and slapped on a grill to get a taste that will literally send you to heaven...LoL! But I wasn't so enthused with the fries/onion rings at all. The oion rings have improved in taste but you only get 4 or 5. It's really hard to find delicious fast food these days that's reasonably priced. anymore worth the stop. People can eat/dine inside also but I love food on the go. My Tip: Their "Signature" Foods or Best Sellers may possibly be the "Burgers and Shakes"...All it takes is a couple of signature items to make a boom, because "uniqueness" excuses the minor concerns uless you're down right "Picky" and hard to please, then don't go. But... "GO" if you love burgers n shakes. I suggest "skip" the chilli and most of the side items, just saying. Stick with the grilled items and shakes. First things first: the milkshakes. Super thick, super good. Husband got chocolate, and I got red cherry. The Hershey's chocolate one was better; I wish the cherry flavor had been stronger in mine but it does have real cherry bits. We each got a Cook Out tray so we could try the max number of things on our first visit, although this also seems to be the norm for people eating here. I got a cheeseburger, a bacon wrap, and fries. The cheeseburger tasted like a char-broiled version of what we had at my elementary school, but with more condiments. The bacon wrap was very plain until I went to get ranch to dip it in. The fries were hardly seasoned at all... I read later that you could get them with the Cajun seasoning, so I might try that if I go again. Husband also got a cheeseburger and fries, and chicken nuggets. He was a little disappointed with the three small nuggets, and was not offered any kind of dipping sauce options for them. We did get our food fast and the staff was friendly. I came here with my best friend last night and we both got milkshakes, I got the oreo and she got the chocolate caramel one and to be completely honest they were just, meh. My milkshake only had a couple of oreo crumbs and the rest was just straight up vanilla and it didn't taste like anything. We also got the cheese fries thinking it would be fries with shredded cheese or something but it was straight up weird yellow "cheese", not even the nacho cheese.
