Cook Out was the move for me and my friends when it came to a late night stop after the festival we attended as it was convenient, open late, cheap-ish and it gets the job done. We ended up going two nights back to back. Lines were long both nights (no shock there), but they moved pretty fast, so no complaints on that. The first night the person on the com was super friendly, but the second night? Not the same energy. They were kinda rude. I get it as it is a late shift, busy night but customer service still matters. It's drive-thru only so no way to check the vibe inside, but the food was hot and fresh both times. You can tell they make it right when you order. My go-to is the cheese bites those never disappoint (other than the amount they give you). I tried the chili hot dog, it was okay but not really for me. The Cheddar Style burger though? Awesome, it definitely hit the spot. Definitely a solid late night spot if you're hungry and just need something quick and good. read more

These are EVERYWHERE in the Raleigh and surrounding areas I've been to. I had to find out what's so special about to warrant so many locations. Drive through only. Drive through on boths sides. Nice and efficient. They had a lot on their menu, so it was a decent selection to choose from. Luckily no one else was in line, as I was able to take a moment to make my selection. As a Cali girl, I ordered the "Out West Style" burger. And they had over 40 choices for a milkshake, so I had to get one. I selected the Banana Pudding, which was pretty darn good. Nice and thick and last several hours! The burger was greasy, but I was actually sort of expecting that. It was a decent burger. A good amount of raw onion initially scared me, but once you bite into it, it's pretty mild. It honestly didn't have any flavor. Good sized bacon pieces. But the BBQ sauce was lacking. There was mayo, and maybe a tiny squirt of BBQ sauce. Next time I'll have to ask for extra BBQ sauce. You know, for the fast service and the price, I would grab a bite here in the future. It's not healthy food at all, but it's your normal fast food joint that will satisfy a craving. Although I am wondering if all locations are consistent in taste. My first experience with Cookout was many moons ago back in the early 2000s. I had my first ever double patty burger. It was great. Now, Cookout has been popping up everywhere in my hometown in Columbia, SC so as I was riding down 95 becoming increasingly famished, and seeing at least 4 signs signaling a cookout at every other exit, I decided I wanted to stop. I was blowing my carb allowance on this so please let it be good! Exit 97 to the left the sign said, and low and behold I saw the sign! This particular location is a drive thru only. Its a double drive thru at that. Cookout is known for their milkshakes so I knew i wanted one. There's a long list of shakes. Something for everyone for sure. I love chocolate so Reese's cup shake it was. I also needed food. I wanted to keep it simple since I was driving an all. Decided on a hot dog. Decided on Cook out style, though I could not necessarily read, or wanted to try to read, what that meant. This was a hotdog with chili, onions, and slaw. MY VERY FIRST SLAW DOG. and it was amazing. Tasted right off the grill at a family cookout. Why had I not tried this sooner? Why had I not been to Cookout sooner? The shake was everything, thick, cold ( thanks 84+ temps and my refusal to run the air) and delicious. SO thick it was a workout with that straw. As soon as my thoughts ran to the idea that a spoon would be perfect right now....what did I discover in my bag but a spoon. Thanks Cookout for thinking of what I needed. My stomach and its lactose intolerant sometimey self held it together for the remaining hours. IT is the next day and I'm still thinking about yesterday's $5 shake and loaded hotdog. I would honestly give this place 0 stars if it were possible. I had 2 of the worst experiences of utter incompetence. Passing through the NC, we stopped to pick up food from the Cook Out at Ricks Rd and Crocker St -- pretty excited to eat Cook Out as we don't have the opportunity normally. Upon trying to order (keep in mind this is off of US-70, so they definitely do not ONLY get locals for customers), we were met with downright rude responses and impatience. When asking a question as simple as, "Does that come with sides?" we were met with an abrupt and snarky, "It can." Our order was not complicated either, yet they managed to mess it up. We ended up with two of one meal and completely missing the rest of the order. We backtracked to correct their mistake -- complete and utter mess. On our way back through NC, we somehow managed to stop at the same exact Cook Out. We simplify our order even more so from our prior experience, hoping to avoid any issues. Once again, my order is botched and incorrect. This time, it was at least correct on the receipt (chili cheese dog, that's all...). Upon returning AGAIN to fix our order, the employees AGAIN met us with just incompetence, a lack of understanding and zero attempt to remedy the experience. Their solution was to just top off the original hot dog with a dollop of chili as opposed to offering me a fresh one. Keep in mind this is during Covid, too. These 2 experiences are arguably enough to make me never want to eat at another Cook Out ever again, and that's unfortunate. read more

Cook-Out is cheap and delicious. I came here alot the last time I was beach bound so this time around I wanted cook-out to be the first meal I had as I was heading back to the beach. I ordered a spicy filet with onion rings and cajun fries with a side of diet coke. Everything was cooked fresh and it was delicious for being sooo cheap. I stopped by here in order to avoid eating at one of those dreaded chain restaurants only to later find out that Cook Out is indeed a chain. However, I am glad that I did because I found it exceptionally good. They advertise their burgers as having a "cooked outdoor" flavor and they are noted in Yelp for hot dogs, but their menu is extensive. It's nothing but a drive through take out place, so don't get your heart set upon being seated or having waiter service. As I mentioned the menu is rather extensive, really too much to read when in your car with others behind you and with whomever is on one of those silly speakers asking you what you want. Ugh! I hate that, but I was surprised by some of the food. Yes, the fries were soggy and yucky, and they didn't include any condiments...guess things like ketchup only come by special request....but I opted for the BBQ Plate. I came here because I totally forgot that a lot of places in Virginia close early. I'm so used to everything in Florida closing a bit late so when I came to visit Virginia and I was looking for food everything was closed so my only options were Wendy's, McDonald's ,cookout, IHOP, waffle House,and some other restaurants. I decided to try our cookout because I had never had their food before but I've heard good things about it. I started off with a regular burger I got lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cheese and fries. Let me be the first to say that regular burger taste is so freaking good I was so surprised at how good that burger taste. Driving from Savannah GA to Fredericksburg VA and stopped to grab food on the way. We were about to get in line at Wendy's when we saw the yelp review of moldy buns! Quickly went to Cook Out since it's right behind Wendy's even though our past experience with other Cook Out's haven't been that great. They were awesome! Not only was the guy at the window fast and pleasant he also apologized profusely we had to wait a minute for our onion rings. AN ENTIRE MINUTE! And he apologized! I didn't even realize a minute has passed. And the food... best fast food burger I've had. Onion rings were crazy hot straight front the fryer, crispy and not greasy. Burger had that perfect chargrilled taste that the commercials always promise but never deliver. This location has made me rethink my previous unpleasant thoughts about Cook Out. This place is one I would love to see on the West coast. So, whenever I'm in town or in an area that has a "Cook Out" I'm stopping for old time sake. I guess you don't realize what you miss until it's not available. So, with that said it's a fast food restaurant but it gives a cook out feel when it comes to their burgers, hotdogs and shakes. I have come to love their shakes of which you can mix and match flavors as well. The day in particular I opted for a chocolate Oreo if I'm not mistaken and it was rich and creamy as I recall. I also chose one of their new menu options fried cheese bites and they were good as well. I must say in my many visits their food is delivered fresh and hot given how busy they are. Depending on the time of day and in some cases their locations you could arrive to a line of cars just waiting. Well worth the wait and budget friendly. May not be a good option for your health, but moderation is key. This is preferably a drive thru or walk up establishment so it's order and go. They stay open late as well; therefore late night shakes are always available. Only hit or miss would be the staff, but mostly cordial to say the least. After fighting with a broken Dell computer for a few weeks, I have a very good reason to start writing again... A Great meal in the middle of North Carolina. Another week another business trip through the I-95 corridor brought me to Selma. The options on Yelp were not that promising with a Burger King and a Shoney's but as I left the gas station parking lot I saw it... a line of about 20 people waiting for food in a dual drive through building with a fifty foot high sign that simply read ... Cook Out. "The Good" - I went for the BBQ Platter. There was chopped BBQ with a little bit of hot sauce dabbed on top, some Hush puppies, Cole Slaw and fries. The drink??? Cheerwine of course, a benefit of the South. (Elliptical here I come) - They have Cheerwine for a drink... - The above meal was very filling, fresh and outstanding, and the cost... Five dollars and change. - I returned later for a milkshake but did control myself from getting more hush puppies. - The milkshake was one of the best I have had, either that or it was one of those moments when the hot night was met by something that was just very good. Either way, I was a happy camper. - They have a walk up window but the two lanes for the drive through are the way to go to avoid getting run over. "The Meh" - The menu looked huge but there was no time to look at it with the line of pick up trucks behind me and the young lady on the speaker asking if she could help me. - The speaker was blown out already which lead to the young lady and I asking each other to repeat ourselves. - You may not be able to see the sign if you are up close. Seriously the sign is fifty feet tall, so across the street, you will have problems finding the joint.... from space, not so much. "The Bad" - Nothing, try this place when you see one... Hey, ya know what? For a fast food joint this place is kind of amazing. On my never-ending trip from Philly to NC, my husband and pilot of our trek, tends to get very cranky if he's not regularly fed, so it was with a near meltdown on the horizon that we pulled off 95 and lucked upon this place. The spicy chicken sandwich packed more heat, and I thought better quality meat than a Wendy's or McD's, although it may have been just a bit smaller. This place was milkshake heaven though, I have never seen so many milkshake options at a normal restaurant let alone a fast food place. We tried out the cappuccino and it did not disappoint. I also thought this place had really stand out fries. They were served piping hot (seriously, they were too hot to eat until after we had finished everything else!) The perfect amount of saltiness and a small size was plentiful for two people. Overall this was a great experience. And to boot they were fast and cheap, I only wish they had these places up north! read more

Before I get into my review... Some back story. I have been hearing about "Cook Out" for a while from a few people I know from NC. They ranted and raved, so naturally, when I saw one while traveling through NC I was excited. Disclaimer: 1 I am from the north and 2 I do not eat pork. I get to the menu and I am a bit overwhelmed to say the least. It has a lot going on. I see BBQ and I got all excited... then I got the news... BBQ = Pulled Pork, much to my dismay. I was all excited to have found a "Cook Out" and the only thing they have that is BBQ on the menu is pulled pork, talk about false advertising. Once I got over the fact that there was no Brisket or even BBQ chicken I settled on a burger. I have to admit the burger was just good... After all the hype I was expecting SO much more. It seemed like it was char Grilled but that didn't make up for the fact that there was no beef BBQ anything on the menu. I also ordered some chili cheese fries. It seemed like they might have been a little on the cold side cause they were not good at all. My wife and one of my sons had burgers that they enjoyed, while my other son had a corn dog. My wife commented that she was also expecting more after all the hype. All in all Cook out is just another fast food burger joint. Again with a name like cook out I was expecting real BBQ and was left so disappointed that I don't think I will go out of my way to go back to one. I didn't have a shake which I later found out they were known for. If and when I see another one I may stop for that only. When I asked to change my order she got even more of an attitude- rolling her eyes, nasty tone, yelling (mind you I had asked in a nice way and even apologized for the inconvenience!) It took all I had not to tell her off and drive away. The only saving grace was the food. The burger was actually good (well cooked, flavorful, and juicy). Great find! Best drive thru burger I've ever eaten. Food is inexpensive, but doesn't taste like it. Fries were hot and fat. My kids liked the hush puppies, corn dogs, and blt.
