I dig Cook Out. Apparently so does every other Bama student. Especially at 2am. In fact, nothing speaks to a University's love for marijuana more than a campus-wide munchie invasion of the local burger spot in the middle of the night. Students at these late night hours resemble the staggering zombies from The Walking Dead except they're giggling uncontrollably and have larger appetites. Most prefer the Cookout Tray which delivers a double cheeseburger with onion rings and cheese curds with a fountain drink for $7.50. Add $1.50 and you got yourself a milkshake upgrade which is a great deal once you realize Cook Out has the best shakes around. Sure there's 400 cars crammed into the parking lot and drive thru and it smells like Reefer Madness, but when you're jonesing for a post THC fix, Cook Out is the spot.

I was in Tuscaloosa for work today and decided to stop by Cook Out for lunch. There isn't one in Birmingham but there should be one coming soon off of Lakeshore Drive. I ordered a regular bbq sandwich and large sweet tea. There was plenty of meat on the sandwich along with cole slaw and bbq sauce. It was a perfect combination of flavors. A little sweet and a little spice. The sandwich was really good. The burgers and milkshakes are good as well. The burgers are homestyle patties with a fresh off the grill taste. I can't wait for it to come to Birmingham!

Very disappointed with this franchise. The Tuscaloosa Cookout, I'm sure in conjunction with the other Cookout locations, do NOT have root beer. They do, however, have Cheerwine, which is the reasoning for the 3 stars instead of 1. This is one of few, if not the only, place in Tuscaloosa with Cheerwine. The burger was good, and the food is cheap. Staff is incredibly efficient.

This was my first time at a cookout and I'd have to say that the food was not as great as my North Carolina friend hyped it up to be, but the service in this Tuscaloosa location was amazing. 3.5 for food and 4.5 for service. The manager was at the cash register and personally offered his favorite milkshake flavors (light vs heavy) and was super friendly and helpful. He even bought his own soap for the bathroom sinks. (Special ones that kind of smelled like cologne lol) I ordered the tray which is a great combo deal, one main, two sides, and a milkshake add on for $1 (normally $3). I got a dressed burger, onion rings and hush puppies as sides, and a banana pineapple milkshake. What a thick delicious milkshake! Recommend if you're looking for something lighter and fruity. The meal was filling and satisfying, and I liked having the option of sitting inside or on the spacious outside patio. Wonderful stop for road trips passing through Tuscaloosa, although I wouldn't say it's my go to fast food now.

I eat fast food about once a month if that, and Cook Out is the one place I go when I am really craving unhealthy food. I recommend ordering the double burger with cajun seasoning, and whatever sides you want. The milkshakes are the best part by far though. My favorites not in any order - Caramel cheesecake + m&m+ oreo - Mocha + m&m + heath - Oreo mint

But spring break week flipped the script in the best way possible. Tonight, my wife and I met up with some good friends for a pre-retirement dinner, and with the college crowd scattered to the beaches, downtown felt like it belonged to us "seasoned locals" again. No lines, no crowds--just a quick call ahead and we were seated within minutes. That alone felt like a win. We started things off with the fried green tomatoes--a true Southern delicacy and, let's be honest, acid reflux's favorite dance partner. Worth it? Absolutely. These were hot, crispy, and full of flavor. The kind of dish that would make Grandma nod in approval. No shortcuts, just done right. For the entrée, I went with the UBK Pasta--blackened chicken, sausage, and shrimp tossed with corkscrew pasta probably crafted in a cast iron skillet. It came out hot and packed with flavor, carrying just the right amount of spice to keep things interesting without overwhelming the dish. Exactly how I like it. My wife stuck with a proven winner: the shrimp & grits. She's had it before, and once again, it delivered. Consistency matters, and this dish continues to hit the mark every time. Now, not everything was quite as smooth. Our waitress wasn't exactly channeling that warm Southern hospitality you hope for. Let's just say she wasn't "Miss Dolly" serving smiles with a side of charm. The service leaned a bit on the impatient side--subtle (and not-so-subtle) hints that our time at the table was up, including clearing drinks before we were even finished. At one point I joked about going to the restroom but worried I might come back to find my chair gone. Still, when the food is this good, it carries the experience. Urban Bar & Kitchen continues to deliver where it matters most--on the plate. The atmosphere was relaxed thanks to spring break timing, the food was as strong as ever, and the company made it even better. As for the service... maybe she was just ready for her own spring break reunion. Happens to the best of us. Final takeaway: Go for the food--it's consistently excellent. And if you can catch a quieter night like this one, even better.

Wife wanted a salad and potato skins so went with the wedge which came chopped so more of a chopped salad than a wedge and it was fine. Nothing spectacular. Who potato skins were reminiscent of some frozen ones you heat in the oven. Didn't seem fresh at all. The bacon wasn't that great really and the cheeses was cheese. All in all edible but not enjoyable. I went with the bacon wrapped meatloaf with mashed potatoes with gravy and a side of Mac and cheese. I'll start with the Mac. It was horrible. Sorry don't mean to be a downer but wasn't good at all. The mashed and gravy a big nope. The potatoes weren't all that good. It was like eating a plat of spackle. And the gravy was horrendous. Made bad potato's worse. The meatloaf was ok. Kind of like cafeteria meatloaf. I did eat it but wasn't thrilled. Again not a fan of that bacon so ditched that after one bite. Personally I would not go back and wife agreed. Maybe we got the wrong items but nothing was good.

The atmosphere is cute - the menu is limited (1 burger, 3 sandwiches, 2 or 3 flatbreads and 2 salads). We ordered: 1 - the double cheeseburger, boring. Lots of meet but not much in the way of toppings. The pickle slice was nice. 2 - BLT, boring. Needs a sauce, even mayo. Would love to see palmetto cheese or avocado or cheddar. Spring mix is the wrong choice in lettuce as well. It turns into mush with the tomato. Nothing memorable. 3 - The Yardhouse, awkward. It was hard to eat with large chicken "cubes" and lots of white bbq sauce. Either keeping the chicken whole or using a shredded chicken would be better. 4 - Fries. 1 order would have been plenty to share among 3 people. They were the best part of the meal and came with a fry sauce. Another strike is that they don't brew their own tea. We're in the Deep South... some days the best thing we've got is fresh brewed tea at every turn. This was a nope... but on top of that the carbonation was "off" in the soda machine too. It's been a few years since my last visit, but back when I worked closer to downtown, this place was a weekly (sometimes twice-a-week) lunch ritual. Man, this spot is awesome for lunch! Now, if you try to come on a weekend--good luck. The place is packed to the gills, and the folks lined up outside aren't there for the turnip greens, if you catch my draft, I mean drift. They're here for the other "festivities"... the bar. But let's talk food. Whether you're circling your favorite meat and three combo or grabbing something off their regular menu, you can't go wrong. Their meat and three is like stepping straight into Granny's kitchen on a cool October Sunday afternoon. I went with the country fried steak, Caesar salad, fried okra, turnip greens, and--because I'm not a quitter--a helping of blackberry cobbler. Every bite was fantastic. My wife went with the fried catfish, paired with black-eyed peas, fried okra, and of course, the same irresistible blackberry cobbler to top it off. Her meal was every bit as delicious as mine (not that I didn't try to sneak a bite or two for quality assurance purposes). The background music today was a dose of pop, with Ingrid Michaelson's The Way I Am setting a nice, mellow vibe--pretty fitting for a lunch date with my wife. Soft and pleasant... though, if I'm being honest, I'd trade Ingrid for a little Metallica or any one of those glorious 80s hair bands in a heartbeat. Nothing says "meat and three" like a little Pour Some Sugar on Me, right? These days, a meal I used to enjoy weekly has become a rare treat, but today's visit reminded me why I loved it so much. The outdoor seating is perfect for a crisp fall or breezy spring day, TVs are plastered all around so you won't miss your favorite team (Roll Tide, of course), and there's even a pool table if you're feeling like hustling a game or two. The lunch staff is fast and friendly, and if you haven't experienced this Tuscaloosa gem, do yourself a favor and step inside for their lunch menu. Just maybe leave the late-night crowd to the younger folks--they've got more energy (and stronger eardrums) for that scene than I do!
