I know it's fast food, but I actually like Cook Out. We are from NJ, so I have never heard of this place. The desk clerk at our hotel recommended it to us as a late night option because nearly everything in the area closed early. After eating at Cook Out, it appears to borrow a little from all the top fast food restaurants: flame broiled burgers like Burger King, cole slaw similar to what Chick Fil A used to serve, grilled hot dogs like Five Guys, and chicken wraps like Wendy's. You can also order their burgers and chicken sandwich in a variety of ways (ex., Cheddar Style, Out West style, Barbeque style). My fiance and I both ordered our chicken sandwiches Barbeque style with bbq sauce, mayo and pickles. I also ordered a watermelon milkshake. Everything was pretty good. I came here for lunch on a Friday afternoon since we just got off the highway. My friend raved about this place and she's a local. We went through the drive thru. I ordered the hamburger tray which includes a side of seasoned fries or onion rings. I chose seasoned fries. The burger was grilled perfectly and the toppings (onions) were seasoned as well. Food selection and prices are great (coming from a CA gal) I was in the mood for a hot dog. Hubby got me the hot dog "meal" comes with fries and for $1 extra you can get a shake instead of a drink. I got the strawberry "shake" but really it is more like ice cream in a cup. They dont even give you a straw (maybe they were supposed to, but we didnt get any) my husband had his with a spoon. BUT i like to drink my shakes so I skipped it and my little guy drank some...most of it went in the trash. This is by far the BEST burger place I have ever been to. I have eaten burgers and fries in every state except HI and AK when I toured in a band for a decade. I am richly blessed because I live in Cook Out's Winston-Salem, home domain. You really cannot go wrong. They have many different styles of burgers which come in four different sizes, and everything is made fresh, when you order it. Their shakes are something to write home about, as well. Ultimate road trip stop! It took us (2 adults 2 TEENS) longer to sort out what we wanted, 5 minutes, then it did for them to read back, make, and deliver the food. They got the order right on the read back and in the bag in spite of an old microphone and speaker system that did give us some communication issues. 2 order lanes and no overhangs make it ok for RVs and campers to drive through and with our Tundra and shorter motorcycle trailer we were able to swing a U-ey to get in line. It looked like you could access the back of the parking lot for a straight shot at the drive though from a nearby street. Food was piping hot, really good and plentiful for the price. Stopped at this drive-thru after a long day of driving from NYC. Very pleased! My husband and I both got the A1 Style Steak Burger and it was delicious! Tastes like it was all prepared from scratch; home-made. Make sure to add the grilled onions to the burgers! So delicious. Also had onion rings which were fantastic! I regret only getting one order because I was craving more as we continued our road trip. The burgers are very heavy/ filling. One regular burger filled me up I couldn't finish my delicious fries but I made room for my onion rings. The 'huge' burger contains two very big meat patties, my husband was pretty full off of just that. Really great place, now I know why they have so many locations in NC. Didn't give it the full 5 stars because this particular location had a poor speaker system- it took longer than it should've to order because we had to keep repeating ourselves since the attendant and us had hard time hearing each other. We placed our order through the drive-thru, which was EXTREMELY LOUD. The total bill seemed appropriate but we didn't leave without checking our order. They left out one meal. The cashier stated that we were not charged for that portion. We proceeded to pay for the missing food and waited but asked to see the two receipts. They said each bag/container has a receipt. When we stated that we wanted a TOTAL receipt, not just segments, they said they don't do that, and proceeded to close the window and turn their back our car. EXTREMELY RUDE!!!! We were driving from SC to DC and found this place on Yelp. Sounded good and fast so we decided to check it out. When we pulled in and saw the line of cars, we knew we were onto something good. We all had burgers - delicious, old school, flame broiled burgers. Excellent burgers. We also enjoyed the hush puppies & fries. Last but not least, the shakes are really thick and tasted great. Kudos to the team working here! They got order right and kept everything straight and they move the line along quickly. Immediately was approached by a beggar who indicated he was having car trouble and could he have some money for gas (?) to get home. No napkins, ketchup or mustard, or the honey mustard we specifically asked for as the sauce for our chicken nuggets were provided in the bag, and the fries were very..."spuddy" (reminiscent of the dirt they once grew in). this place sucks. we went through the "double drive through" with much confusion. we decided to order one small typical burger, two small nonchalant cheeseburgers, one cheddar burger, one quarter pounder cheeseburger, one singular corned dog, two orders of hush puppies, a medium banana shake, and three orders of run of the mill french fries. we were then read back our order in quite possibly what i believe to be pig latin with a hint of japanese slang. next we brushed off the strangeness of the $7.40 total they told us and pulled to the window with absolutely no idea what was coming next.... an orb whose name i assume to be kevin flung open the door with the strength of a mediocre bull rider. they spoke as if a teeny tiny corned dog was lodged in their esophagus. we handed over our payment and received a $23.40 total. following this interaction, the door was harshly closed in our faces with a huff. then a few minutes later, the same kevin named orb violently ripped open the door like they was opening the door at a bull pin rodeo. they threw the two extremely small bags to us and here is where the story begins... we pulled forward but were skeptical enough to stop within a considerable distance to the window. upon inspection, one bag was full of six bags of tube shaped hush puppies and the second bag empty with a singular and wimpy bag o unsalted french fries. since this was such a saddening sight, we walked to the window with hopes of receiving our true order. yet again, the same orb was not happy to see us. they began to slam the door in our faces and gruff at us with what we now believe to be multiple tube hush puppies in their throat. after ten more minutes of standing by the door, they threw yet another $4 bag of mysteries at us. upon another inspection, we received two small and wimpy burgers with cheese, the saddest possible plain hamburger a human being has ever seen, two decent larger burgers with cheese and one more bag of tube puppies. we never received our corned dog. then as we walked away from the window, the orb screamed unrepeatable words at us. we quickly scurried out of the facility with no further hope for salvation. i would not go here again. on the plus side, the banana shake was pretty good. read more

I finally got a chance to order a burger and a milkshake at Cook Out in Roanoke Rapids NC. I don't do drive-through's, but there's no other way to order. The burger reminds me of Five Guys' burgers (fresh). The bun was especially soft. My favorite milkshake is strawberry and the one to beat is Potbelly's, although Dairy Queen is a close second. Cook Out's strawberry milkshake is thicker, which is a plus. However, it loses points because it is too sweet. I don't like anything that tastes too sweet. read more
