Had a problem with my gas pack and lost heat on our first floor. Out of 10 other companies they one of the few to tell my my 3 ton unit was oversize for the duct work under the house. They also found a duct was was way too small the all the correct air flow to the other half of our home. I felt they knew their stuff when they took the time to look at the electrical and our thermostat. They shows up on a cold morning and had my old unit out an the new one in with an hour. It did take 5 hours total to finish all the connections, programing the smart unit and replacing the small duct. We have heat now and it even gotten my wife home office to be heat like the rest of the house. It was always a bit warmer or colder than the rest of the house. I trust these guys to come back and fix any of my HVAC problems. They did amazing work. read more

Bad experience... HVAC replacement: - Had a brand new Trane system installed - Didn't cool properly following installation - Took multiple visits and 2 weeks to get AC working properly (root cause: incorrect wiring at installation) Requested quote to improve even cooling: - Technicians/installers rigged system without permission (turning blower up to top speed and partially closing every damper) - would have caused premature wear and failure of unit - One technician/installer was unprofessional and rude prior to storming out of house - Sent concerns about visit to owner and office manager and never received a response - Received a quote to replace entire ductwork - instead of addressing specific areas of concern as requested During multiple interactions, they were quick to speculate and point fingers at existing construction - the majority of which were invalid or irrelevant concerns. Would not recommend - especially after the unprofessional reaction from one of their technician/installers. I was calm and polite during every interaction despite the frustration and worry that they caused (brand new unit not cooling effectively for 2 weeks during the summer). The technician/installer in question became angry after I asked basic questions about his "recommendations" which weren't logical. read more

Definitely lost our business after our last experience with them. At first it was the coil in our furnace that needed to be cleaned, when I informed the owner of the company (JD) we would have to get a quote or two before moving forward with the job he started trashing other local heating and air companies saying "they'll just come in and slap something on" he then started claiming that it was now not just the coil that needed to be replaced but also the motor as well as the condenser on the outside unit. Now we needed a complete overhaul of the entire cooling system (estimating a ballpark figure of $6500) And if all that wasn't enough he spoke with a condescending tone the entire time and capped it all off with joking about my last name. Good news is we immediately called another company and had the coil cleaned, fixing the issue. Said other company was very professional and thorough. read more

Too bad that 20 out of 10 is not allowed. On February 20, 2020, on the ONE day it snowed here in Raleigh over the entire winter, my 22 year old heat pump went out for the second time in 14 months. The first time, I was charged a king's ransom for a replacement capacitor. The second time, I quickly researched the BBB where Cool Change Heating and Air has an A+ rating and gave them a call. Soon technician Nic was checking out the unit. He found a bad transformer as well as a slow leak of my unit's obsolete Freon and estimated a $250 bill which was not a bad price. But I saw my old unit as becoming a money pit, so Cool Change owner JD came out to discuss that. The old unit was the best of its time for efficiency in a package unit with a SEER of 12. Don't even make a 12 anymore. The best for my type unit is now 16 with the lowest unit rated 14. JD offered me a 16 for the price of the 14. And away we go. They LOANED me a replacement transformer at no charge to get us through the night. The next day, a Friday, JD and installers Randy and Paul were there to get started. JD had other things to do so he eventually left Randy and Paul to get the job done....but Uh Oh. They judged that the city inspector would fail the installation due to the terrible condition of the circuit breaker panel connecting the house to the electric meter. A grab for more money? NO WAY! I was so concerned about that breaker panel that the PREVIOUS December, I myself purchased a SquareD Main Breaker Panel and circuit breakers from Home Depot but had not yet found an electrician to install it. Just sitting in my garage. Cool Change has electrician Harvey on call and out he comes. And on we go. By the end of the day (high temperature of 36 degrees), the entire job was complete, work area totally cleaned and even the decorative stone around the area was artfully replaced. Next week, the city inspector comes by and has only good things to say about the installation and HVAC unit chosen. And Maegan in the office was persistent in contacting me later for my Duke Power account information so she could put me in for a $350 upgrade rebate. Duke actually sent me a total of $400 but I have spent the extra $50 and they can't have it back. Too bad that 20 out of 10 is not allowed. read more

On June 15 our AC failed to work and it was one of those hot days when the temperature went up to 99 degree. At 7PM I called a top rating HVAC service provider on Yelp and they said they could only come 7 days later, while calling other HVAC service providers just didn't yield me any response. Early next morning I texted 3-4 HVAC companies thinking some of those companies might be technically advance enough to use a mobile phone as their service number and could receive my texting. Cool Change was the only one returned my message and promised to come the same morning. By 10AM they arrived at our house and quickly figured out it was a capacitor issue. They also told us that our AC had not be serviced or cleaned and the overgrown shrubs adjacent to the AC unit is giving it a hard time to run properly. So we got the capacitor replaced and had the AC cleaned. All at a reasonable cost. JD had his brother from Florida coming to help him so the job was done quickly, so by 11AM all issues are fixed and the cleaning was done. They also took the effort to trimmed the overgrown shrubs blocking AC air circulation or heat exchange. The funny thing is that now our house is pretty cool when the thermostat is set at 77 degree. Before the repair, the house was that cool even when we set the temperature at 75 degree. I guess cleaning might have helped, but I could be wrong. I would recommend Cool Change to anyone in the area. Speedy and top quality work with quite reasonable prices. read more

On Friday August 21, my AC quit. I did a Google search, and called the big name repair company that was first on the list. They came out, and while diagnosing the problem, they were basically trying to sell me a new unit, duct work, and thermostat. Just to fix the problem, they wanted a lot. It was late in the day, and I called Cool Change based on the 2 Yelp reviews. I'm glad I did. JD was calling the Carrier store, trying to get my part that night, and get it fixed. Unfortunately, they weren't available, but JD got the part on Saturday, and had his crew out to install it immediately. They were fast, and friendly, and even with off hour rates, they were far cheaper than the big name company. Factor in the costs of a hotel, and dog boarding I didn't have to pay, I can say Yelp and Cool Change came through. I would recommend this company. read more

Short version: We liked them, but then they didn't do a complete job twice over. We made a mistake and forgot to cancel the service call with them. They felt responsible to educate us on proper etiquette with service calls while implying (intentional or not) that we were causing little old ladies to freeze. They didn't realize we were a repeat customer that they'd messed up with in the past until it was pointed out. They stood by their need to repeatedly instruct us, but did apologize for the mistake and offered to pay for the other service call. I told them, I'm good. We're done. Long version: Lightning struck, zone board got fried. Summer heat baked my family. Cool Change came promptly and super helpful. Winter came, instead of heat, cold air came out of our ducts. Called Cool Change, they came out and discovered they'd forgotten to attach the wires for heat. Next winter came and the heat couldn't keep up. Called around to get someone in right away when Cool Change couldn't come until Friday, but forgot to cancel Cool Change. That was our mistake. New company came in and discovered Cool Change forgot to attach the auxiliary heat, so the new guys fixed it. Friday came, and a Cool Change affiliate showed up. I apologized to the the service rep and explained what happened. Thirty minutes later, my cell gets hit from the same number repeatedly in the span of 10 minutes. I finally answer and its the Cool Change owner. After confirming our appointment he launches into how scheduling two service companies is bad and if everyone did what I did, many old ladies would be left in the cold. Emphasizing that we meant to cancel and needed someone as soon as possible, I said I didn't appreciate his assertion that it was my fault little old ladies weren't getting their heat fixed. He says, its not your fault, but if everyone did it... Ok, so people like me... And then a vicious cycle ensued him repeating his service etiquette instruction and me saying I didn't appreciate it. I later mentioned that the the whole need for the service had been due to their negligence. He took ownership for that, but stood by his efforts to educate me regardless of how I told him it came off. And then he started to explain it to me again. Overall, they're nice people, but I'm not fan of how they handle their customers when there's a conflict. We won't be using them in the future, no surprise. But, now you know about the proper etiquette in setting up service calls. Cool Change said it was their responsibility to educated, consider me educated. read more

New systems working perfectly but true to form, Cool Change has sent out quality follow up people to reinspect their installation, operating specs and answer any questions I had after using it for a couple of weeks. The split cooling unit in my wine cellar recently stopped working and I decided to try Cool Change Heating and Air to fix the problem. My experience was terrific. The receptionist was very friendly and helpful and set me up with a repairman for the next day. Jason was very punctual, friendly, and knowledgeable about my system and we decided to start with the simple solution first, which has worked great so far (2 weeks). JD and Jason are awesome and super honest people. I had a problem with my air conditioner last summer and JD sent someone the same day. Unfortunately the problem was misdiagnosed the first time. Jason came back on weekend (Sunday), quickly identified the problem (broken main switch that looks like a light switch in the attic), fixed it. Here is the best thing - they did not charge me for the visit because they misdiagnosed it the first time. It's hard to find honest people and businesses like Cool Change these days. I had very pleasant experience with JD to fix our AC problem. Our AC didn't generate cold air for a few days, so we decided to request a quote through yelp's function to find a professional on HVAC system. I sent the same inquiry to five different companies in Raleigh/Cary area yesterday around the midnight and I found this morning that only JD replied me within 30 min and even offered me an appointment for today. I was already impressed with his prompt response and sincere attitude for the business. I also liked about that he was straight about the service call fee, which I wanted to know in advance, and that he included his brief impression about the problem and gave me an advise to avoid further issue/ cost in the initial reply. Comparing with other responses I got from the rest of companies by 9am today, I considered taking his offer to meet today. My only concern was fewer yelp reviews on his work though all was very positive. His service call fee seemed relatively higher than others, but I felt that it still fell within a reasonable range. After reading his philosophy about the business that you can find in his yelp page, "Meet the Business Owner" , I became confident to choose him over other companies to get the best service. Now I am very glad that I did choose JD. He was friendly and professional. He showed up on-time and found the issue instantly, which was consistent with his professional intuition from my inquiry. He described me the problem step by step, and explained the details of the cost. He never tried to sell new unit like he promised in his yelp page and accepted coupon from his webpage. He even compared discounts he offered to work out the best for my cost. I am happy to find a reliable professional in my area and will definitely ask JD for help if I need any assistance for the HVAC problem.
