I brought my toddler in for his hair cut. He has a lot of curls and it was getting long. He does have a hard time with hair cuts and was crying so he was sitting on me for the hair cut. I could tell the lady did not care about making it look nice and she smelled like cigarettes. We paid for hit but the haircut was so uneven. I had to cut it to look cleaner when I got home. I took my 18 month old excited because of the cute seats, chose not to read reviews even though I saw the rating due to a recommendation (that I later found out was 12 years old lol) I explained I didn't want much taken off just a trim to even out the mullet. She starts with scissors my son is doing fine then she pulls out a pair of clippers and my husvand and I look at each other but unfortunately didn't have time to say anything before she buzzes my sweet boys hair. He's sobbing all freaked out by the buzzer. She's upset because he won't stay still. "really??? Really?" She repeatedly says to my son. She grabs him by his cheeks extremely hard to get him still. I grab my son to make him more comfortable. She's upset by that. My husband feels guilty not saying something. I feel guilty. But what do you do in a matter of seconds?? All in all. Sure. He does have a decent hair cut. He looks cute. She got the job done. As soon as I walked outside I started crying. She manhandled my baby, and I now feel guilty for letting it happen I guess this first time mom just wanted a sweet moment getting my son his first haircut. Please read the reviews when it comes to your kid. Don't be a goof like me and mess up. And yay I have a Polaroid photo of my family and a lock of his hair. I appreciate that. For my toddlers first "professional" hair cut, I brought him to Cool Tops. I quickly regretted it and felt guilty for subjecting him to the experience. And unfortunately, my experience is eerily similar to other reviewers noted here. At first, my son was won over by the kids size race car stations. There was only an older man and older woman working that afternoon, and I assumed they might be the owners. I mentioned to the woman that this was his first haircut and asked that she only use scissors as he was afraid of clippers. She didn't make any attempt to talk to him or engage with him in any way. Despite the stranger cutting his hair, he did well until the woman turned on the clippers despite my request. Then later, she used the hair dryer on him without warning. I would expect anyone familiar with small kids would know a little heads up goes along way. He was frightened and began to cry. The woman, visibly annoyed by his reaction, exclaiming "Really?" and rolling her eyes as I settled him. She finished the cut, then again with the hairdryer, this time yelling "Oh my god!" over the sound or the dryer when my son again became upset. I could get ourselves out of there fast enough as I left feeling so uncomfortable, and guilty for putting my toddler in that situation. This is hands down the best place for a kid's haircut. We've tried other places that weren't a fit...our son would cry the whole time. Walking into Cool Tops is inviting and VERY kid friendly! They have cars and bikes for the kids to sit in, which my son loves! They even have an area with toys for kids to play with...and they always top off the visit by letting by the kid pick a balloon. This place is fine if you have a kid who is okay with haircuts or maybe even likes them. She's very efficient. However, if you have a kid who isn't comfortable with haircuts or just flat out doesn't like them, this place isn't so great. It's an older lady who cuts the hair and she doesn't have a lot of patience if a kid is nervous or not cooperating. Best case scenario, you get a kid with a not so great haircut. I went here between regular appointments and had both of my son's hair cut here. Compared to our normal person, I was way less than impressed. I asked her to keep the style they had but just shorten everything. Instead she took out the clippers and spiked their hair in the front. We have been to Cool Tops twice now and have had great experiences both times! I took my son here when he turned 16months old for his first haircut. Leila was excellent with him! The second time we went for the big boy cut, I was nervous but still Leila did wonderful with him and delivered yet again another great haircut. I really appreciated all she did for him for his first hair cut. She took a photo of him, saved his first lock of hair and put it on a cute print out that I will cherish forever. I brought my 3 year old daughter in for her first hair cut for which she was nervous about. The lady that cut her hair, an elderly lady with no customer service skills kept telling my daughter in aggressive voice to keep her head in position during the cut. At one point she grabbed my daughter's head and forcefully pushed it down and told her to keep it in place. I was horrified and angry. I managed to keep it together in front of my daughter. Don't go here. You can find better services elsewhere. The lady is very rude and just doesn't seem to care for taking care of her clients which are children. read more

Nice little place for kids. We miss our old place that was a little bigger in San Mateo but this place did the job and my son who is 2.5 seemed overall happy with his hair cut. Leila I believe her name is -- very quick and efficient. My son got a little squirmy when she was cutting the front pieces but between her, my husband and I we calmed him down and he was done in about 10 minutes. They have cars, a motorcycle, and a horse for kids to sit on plus a balloon sword and lollipop are given at the end. This is the cutest place for kids to get haircuts. They have a variety of chairs to sit in, please motorcycle, race car, horse, etc. In front of each chair is a small TV for your child to watch. At the end of your appointment they give you a lollipop and a balloon sword. The kids enjoy playing in the lobby while waiting for their appointment. This business adheres to Covid policies. After my 15 month old son's hair was getting longer than the stereotypical Beatles phase style and all in his eyes, we figured it was time for a real haircut. Nevermind the fact he's terrified of almost everyone in the world who aren't his parents and going through that stranger danger phase. Regardless, Leila took care of him swift and with expert precision. She was extremely patient and calmly instructed me how to hold him and she would get in to do the chops and cuts while he basically cried and made it difficult for any normal person to do the cut. But Leila is not a normal stylist and was able to weave in and out with grace and precision, while maintaining utmost calm. I've been taking my two girls here since moving to the area last year. This place is great! The girls get their cut from Maria and she is very sweet! She engages with the girls and makes them feel super comfortable that they are not afraid to get a haircut. Rather, they are excited to go and get a balloon at the end. I came across this place looking for a last minute hair cut for my infant child. Not having high expectations because he is fairly new to the world and didn't know if he'd react well. My baby sat through the experience with help from myself and my husband. But I was automatically disappointed with the experience. I do not want to write a review to put someone out of business but simply for the hairdresser that attended us to work on her skill and professionalism. When we arrived we were greeted by the receptionist. The salon looks a little dated, they have screens to entertain the little ones while getting their haircut. They have products available. The place just needs some updates and some tlc. While waiting we had the chance to see how the hairdresser worked and we wanted to walk out but needing this haircut was crucial for us. So we went ahead and sat our baby down. The hairdresser automatically wanted to use clippers and buzz cut the baby and insisted on it. We didn't want our son's first experience to be scary so we wanted to go with shears first. She was dead set on using clippers and we held our ground and said no. She said "fine but if he doesn't let himself I will not do." We said okay, and as we sat the baby down we assisted him by keeping his chin down and his arms down. She just started cutting away and fast obviously for baby's sudden movements but she had little technique to keep it even. It looks a little choppy now that it has dried through the day. She didn't really ask what we would like if the haircut was successful. Felt rushed seems to want to fit as many clients in a span of 3-5 minutes. She did not take her time. But I guess how do you do that with a small infant. When I asked her to try and trim a little more on the back she said she couldn't because of his cowlick in the back but he doesn't have one and even if he did didn't bother to take time to make it even. My husband tried to reassure me it was fine. They took a Polaroid pic and put a snip of his hair in a baggie with certificate as this was his first professional haircut. We got charged and tipped. She was the only hairdresser for a Saturday. There were signs needing more stylist and a receptionist. We will try another place next time or ask for someone else if we ever find ourselves back there. read more

Took my daughter here today. Showed a picture of a haircut we wanted to the lady and she said she could do it (just some layers, nothing crazy). DON'T come here unless you want your child's hair cut in a straight line (they seemed to do well with straight lines). I should have said something in the moment but I didn't want my daughter to feel bad and I didn't want the lady to "fix" it. It's so bad, it's almost funny.
