Above bathroom ceiling (ceiling removed) with new air handler and pipe fittings).

Overall, a great experience - I highly recommend them. I got several quotes and this was not the cheapest one, but I decided to go with them because A. they were most responsive (email, text or phone call, they respond to all), B. they were flexible and agreed to sub-contract my preferred carpenter for the construction pieces, C. the equipment they offered me was better than the competitor, D. they offered information and help with MassSave high-efficiency 0% heat loan and related MassSave rebates. The job was replacing my broken heat system, including backup heat / air handler (inconveniently in my bathroom ceiling) and heat pump / condenser (inconveniently on the roof of my condo complex). The machine is a Bryant Evolution® Variable-Speed Heat Pump Model 288BNV (which is 18 SEER/12.5 EER cooling efficiency and 11 HSPF) and the air handler is 5-speed variable. The new thermostat is the companion Evolution® Connex™ Control. It took a few weeks to get contracts (including sub-contract), MassSave heat loan sorted and schedule the job, but once is started, the heat replacement itself took only 2 full days, including removal of old equipment, crane to reach the roof and electrical. The heat removal / replacement was exactly per the provided schedule. I think there were at least 6 guys working on the heat equipment at various times. The ceiling construction (4 other guys at various times) took a bit longer than I initially expected (1 day demolition of bathroom, as expected, but 3+ days of ceiling reconstruction, which included frame, drywall, plaster, paint and 2 installed metal hatches), but that was my preferred subcontractor and he did a fantastic job. All the people who came to my house were professional and knowledgeable. The preparation and cleanup was a little inconsistent depending on which guy was there; sometimes it was 30 minutes of prep with paper / plastic on all floor (including through the doorway) and cleaning so thorough that it was cleaner than I usually keep it; other times it was a cloth tarp quickly set down with a quick wipedown and sweep at the end (not as clean as I usually keep it), but I appreciate that everyone made an effort to clean the job site at the end of each day. I haven't had the new, efficient system long enough to see an appreciable change in my energy bills (April was slightly less than 2018 April bill, but hard to say if that's just inconsistent weather or the new system), but I can definitely FEEL the difference. I LOVE the new 5-speed fan system, which goes soft if just maintaining a temperature or harder if needing to change multiple degrees (which it can do much quicker than my old system). Also, it's "smart" enough not to put the fan full blast while there's still cold air in the ducts (my old system used to blow cold air when it first turned on and had only one speed). During the project, they handled most of the MassSave heat loan application and also responded quickly to questions, and were able to deal with challenges (like the narrow height of my bathroom ceiling) and changes (e.g., an unrelated plumbing project in the building which had impact on my condensate drainage pipe). They also submitted both MassSave rebates on my behalf. Although I generally like to support smaller businesses, having a larger business for this project, with a dedicated sales person / project manager (Jason Shea) made this project a lot easier for me. Sometimes you get what you pay for, and I think in this case, choosing a more expensive service gave me a much better experience. Also, on a side note, this project involved people of various skin tones and accents; white guys, Brazilian immigrants, they all did a great job - that's what makes America great, a mix of talented, hard-working and diverse people. I would definitely use Cooling Unlimited again and would recommend to anyone in the area who needs heat replacement.

Ryan was great, tried to keep my carpets/bathroom clean as much as possible and was patient in discussing my options and answering my questions. Surprisingly was able to get an appointment for install on Monday. Jared was also great. Definitely appreciate the small details and concerns to keep the carpet clean like hand carrying both the old and new water heater up 2 flights of stairs. Between the quick response/scheduling time, clean workmanship, and fine attention to detail, happy to say the leaking water heater experience felt less chaotic with 128's help! Total turnaround time, Friday 11pm to Monday 4pm hot water up and running!!

The estimate (#435094323) was $30,275 to demo every wall and ceiling necessary, disconnect first- and second-floor bathrooms, toilets and sinks, and replace the main stack. That was presented to me as the only option -- no alternatives, no phasing, nothing. And it did not include the roughly $6,000 I'd need to close the walls back up and reinstall fixtures, or the ~$400 roofer I'd have to hire and coordinate myself. Their own estimate puts the hole repair on the customer in writing. All in: nearly $37,000. Meanwhile my first-floor tenant was told she couldn't use her bathroom or her kitchen. When I hesitated at the number, I was told that at least if I sold the house I'd "have retail value." That's the line that made me stop and get a second opinion. Thompson Plumbing came out, found the actual leak -- old hubbed cast iron serving the kitchen -- and repiped it. $2,995. My final invoice was $3,420, and that included an unrelated frost-free silcock I added on. My toilet was fine. My kitchen sink was fine. My tenant's kitchen and bathroom were fine. Not one wall was demoed. Same house. Same leak. Ten percent of the price. I'm not going to speculate about why the two assessments were so far apart. I'll just say this: if 128 Plumbing tells you your house needs a $30,000 repipe, get a second quote before you sign anything. I nearly didn't, and it would have cost me thirty-three thousand dollars I did not need to spend.

The technicians show up promptly, do great work, and keep your home clean by wearing protective covers over their work boots (seriously, it's a small thing but it makes a world of difference to me). The annual service contracts are very reasonable, and contract customers get priority, which is awesome. You can't plan emergencies, but you can plan on setting up a contract! For twice-annual tuneups on our HVAC equipment, Luis and David have both been fantastic, giving good advice and making sure our systems (installed by another, less responsive company we no longer bother with) are in good order. I only wish we'd had them install our equipment in the first place. For insulation work, Corey and team were great about assessing our home, providing recommendations, and working on the fly when it turned out some of our walls already had insulation. These folks are easy to get ahold of, easy to work with, and unfailingly polite and awesome at their work. I can't say enough great things about them.

We initially called them out to locate a refrigerant leak. Without conducting a comprehensive diagnostic or mentioning that leaks could exist in multiple spots, they stated with complete certainty that the issue was the evaporator coil. They gave us two options: replace the entire system for $18,320 or replace the coil for $5,109, offering zero explanation of why a full replacement might actually be necessary. Trusting their diagnosis, we chose the cost-effective repair. Two weeks later, the AC broke down again. They returned, discovered a leak in the lines, and charged us an additional $3,357 to replace the pipes. Two weeks after that repair, the system failed a third time. At that point, the condenser was the only original component left, but because our unit is an obsolete model no longer in production, they told us we now had to replace the entire system anyway for $18,320, or pay $10,385 just for a condenser. We asked them to meet us halfway on pricing given that we had already paid $8,466 directly due to their sequential, incompetent diagnostic failures. Instead of working with us, Jonathan completely ghosted us. We reached out in May, and by August we still had no working AC. Every single step required chasing them down with multiple follow-ups just to get a basic response. Do not trust this company with your HVAC system--their diagnostics are guesswork, their customer service is nonexistent, and they will abandon you after taking thousands of dollars.

A contractor was hired by this company to build a fully functional website on a rushed timeline. They were told they were the only person working on the project, and that the urgency was due to the company's former developer being in a legal dispute and planning to take down the live site by June 1st, 2025. The contractor dropped everything to help and finished the site two weeks before the deadline. Over the course of several weeks, the contractor even went to their office multiple times for meetings with the owner's son and other team members, working in good faith to move the project forward. After the work was done, it came to light that two or three other people were also working on the same site, despite the company claiming otherwise from the start. When the contractor followed up for payment, the owner's son who was the main point of contact allegedly said "My boy could do it for less than $1,000, so our initial agreement on price is gonna be a lot less now." He also added he was going on vacation in 15 days and "didn't have time to deal with it." All this while wearing an expensive Rolex. The contractor was told, "Send me the invoice I'll pay you for your time." The invoice was sent immediately, and the son followed up once more saying, "I'll get back to you." After that, he went completely silent no reply, no payment. The contractor was left dismissed and disrespected. The stress and anxiety from this on top of an existing heart condition led to serious mental and physical strain. Legal steps have since been taken. This post is meant to warn others if you're a freelancer, contractor, or subcontractor, be cautious. Get everything in writing, and don't ignore red flags. No one should be pressured, misled, ghosted, or lowballed after showing up, putting in the time, and delivering their end of the deal.

Their guy came in and wouldn't even look to see what was wrong with my unit. They immediately told me that I needed a new system and quoted me an outrageous price. They told me that they needed to rip out all my walls to put it in. I wanted to get a second opinion, so I put a request through yelp. Dan, the owner of Max, emailed me within an hour with his cell number. Stacey, the office manager, called me first thing the next morning and sent out Joseph, who did a careful analysis of my system. It did need to be replaced. Paulo came out and did an outstanding installation, over 3 days, staying late on a Friday night to complete it. My walls were all kept intact. And the price was MUCH lower than what the big name company quoted me. DEFINITELY USE MAX!!!!! Feel free to contact me for details.

Dan and Sam have been stand-out with the depth of their answers to my questions. I appreciate that immensely as a demonstration of how much they care about the subject matter, and how much they care about ensuring I'm properly informed on what is happening. Sam and his crew were out all day yesterday dismantling the old boiler and installing the new one. They were friendly and engaged the whole time letting me observe the process. Sam called me over throughout to show me up close what had corroded in my old boiler, and to explain to me how it happened. He did the same during install of the new boiler to demonstrate all the critical aspects for maintenance--including letting me unscrew and rescrew a piece to practice for future cleaning. The new boiler is running smoothly right now. I feel like I understand its pieces. Sam even took an interest in diagnosing why my bathroom heating panel (which has never worked) wasn't heating. He cleaned out its vent and it has heat now. My cat is very happy to be warm right now. From the way Sam and his crew talked through all the aspects of the work they were doing, it was clear they take pride in the quality of the work. This wasn't just a job to get over and done with. And what's more, they did it for $2k cheaper than my competing quote. Max Heating and Cooling will be the first people I call for any plumbing projects I have going forward.

They installed a heat pump, hot water heater, and insulated our home. Here is a list of the things done wrong. Day 1 installed condensation tube wrong and wrong pump. They said it would be fine so we ran the system.......flooded basement Forgot to install a 600$ add on part and only came back when I called them out on it. Installed the wrong thermostat causing the unit to run 24/7 leading to almost 1200$ in electric bills over two months. They did compensate me for some of this after I complained for 3 months and presented them with my electric bills. Patched 30 holes in my walls incorrectly and left a styrofoam plug sticking out of every one. They had to come back and redo the whole project filling my house with dust and mess a second time. When the technician didn't get the number he wanted on the insulation blower test started closing interior doors to falsify the number so he could move on to the next job. Homeworks employees broke a part of the heat pump TWICE leaving us with no AC in the middle of summer for 4 weeks and another flooded basement. No compensation and no apology. I pay them monthly for a service contract. Failed to repair a broken pump.......flooded basement again which is now moldy. The employees are nice but if you actually want anything done correctly I would look elsewhere.

They were hired to upgrade an electrical panel and install and heat pump hot water heater. From the beginning, there were some red flags. The wrong team (insulation) showed up for an energy audit for HVAC services. I was sent a quote intended for another customer - and it took over a week of back-and-forth with three people to get the right quote. Still, I signed up because I've had some sub-optimal experiences with small contractors, and the larger Homeworks organization appealed to me. I was also buying the convenience of one-stop shopping for MassSave and Heat Loan processing. Big mistake. One year update: 1) Heat pump hot water heater does not work. 2) I have been bounced-around to numerous people. In total, at least 20 people have been involved in the installation of the hot water heater. 3) I ended up directly managing the subs on the project (plumbing and electrical). This was done out of necessity, not preference. 4) A final electrical inspection was done, and then re-scheduled twice because the electrician didn't have a process for accurately recording project inspection status. 5) I am convinced that decarbonization/electrification efforts in progressive states like Massachusetts will fail if my experience is at all indicative of what it's like trying to replace gas-fired equipment. I should note that the quality of the work performed, once it was performed, was quite good. The issues with Homeworks are less about the work done in the home and more about the people working in the office. This company is in desperate need of restructuring, overhead reduction, and a stronger focus on operations. It would be a good business school case study. If you can find good contractors, I recommend hiring direct and navigating rebates and Heat Loan financing on your own. Avoid the Homeworks morass if you can!
