In fact he found a way to decrease the cost as we discovered my last unit was way too large for my living space. We used Cooling Unlimited to install our heat pumps. 1) Cooling Unlimited submitted our Mass Save paperwork incorrectly. After agreeing to complete paperwork for a whole-home rebate, they submitted it as a partial rebate. They were unable to secure our full rebate. After we contacted Mass Save directly, we recovered the full rebate. 2) After the installation, our upstairs heat pump was not operating properly. Cooling Unlimited came out multiple times to inspect the unit and told us it was working adequately. Only after I showed them that the temperature coming out of the upstairs unit was not appropriate did they agree there was an issue. They told us they contacted the manufacturer and ultimately fixed what they described as an issue with the unit. 3) Our upstairs thermostat did not operate correctly after installation. Cooling Unlimited replaced it, but the replacement thermostat still does not measure the temperature correctly. 4) Cooling Unlimited installed a glycol feeder and heat exchanger. Our oil company later told us that the heat exchanger was undersized. We asked Cooling Unlimited to come out and inspect the heat exchanger. Cooling Unlimited then told us they had sent someone from Bosch to our house to inspect the heat exchanger, and that the Bosch technician said it was fine. 5) After all of this, I called Bosch directly. Bosch told me they had no record that Cooling Unlimited had registered our units them and that they had never been contacted from Cooling Unlimited about our units. This made it unclear who Cooling Unlimited had actually contacted when they said they had spoken with the manufacturer. 6) Cooling Unlimited installed incorrectly sized filters in our air handlers and had cut the filters with scissors to make them fit. 7) Cooling Unlimited is now refusing to honor our service contract. We signed a three-year service contract that included annual service. We did not receive service from them in the fall, and they are now saying we cannot receive our annual service because it is spring. read more

Originally they installed our central air and the first month was great. Then it started to be faulty so they came out and said "there is nothing we can do, please contact 'this electrician". Electrician came out, we paid the electrician and nothing was resolved. Then cooling unlimited tried charging us $300 for the rep saying "there is nothing we can do" even though that rep said, "there will be no charge". We eventually hired an electrician outside of their organization that saw the "wires were damaged and could have caused a fire if we waited any longer!" Yet, cooling unlimited is still trying to charge us for nothing... customer service here is awful, I do not recommend using this company. read more

Someone came out to inspect our central AC and noticed our ductwork had a hole in it. Said someone would be out for an estimate 4 weeks ago. After 5 calls to them, I'm giving up. They showed no concern for my issue and at this point, I'm no longer going to be relying on them. read more

Overall, a great experience - I highly recommend them. I got several quotes and this was not the cheapest one, but I decided to go with them because A. they were most responsive (email, text or phone call, they respond to all), B. they were flexible and agreed to sub-contract my preferred carpenter for the construction pieces, C. the equipment they offered me was better than the competitor, D. they offered information and help with MassSave high-efficiency 0% heat loan and related MassSave rebates. The job was replacing my broken heat system, including backup heat / air handler (inconveniently in my bathroom ceiling) and heat pump / condenser (inconveniently on the roof of my condo complex). The machine is a Bryant Evolution® Variable-Speed Heat Pump Model 288BNV (which is 18 SEER/12.5 EER cooling efficiency and 11 HSPF) and the air handler is 5-speed variable. The new thermostat is the companion Evolution® Connex™ Control. It took a few weeks to get contracts (including sub-contract), MassSave heat loan sorted and schedule the job, but once is started, the heat replacement itself took only 2 full days, including removal of old equipment, crane to reach the roof and electrical. The heat removal / replacement was exactly per the provided schedule. I think there were at least 6 guys working on the heat equipment at various times. The ceiling construction (4 other guys at various times) took a bit longer than I initially expected (1 day demolition of bathroom, as expected, but 3+ days of ceiling reconstruction, which included frame, drywall, plaster, paint and 2 installed metal hatches), but that was my preferred subcontractor and he did a fantastic job. All the people who came to my house were professional and knowledgeable. The preparation and cleanup was a little inconsistent depending on which guy was there; sometimes it was 30 minutes of prep with paper / plastic on all floor (including through the doorway) and cleaning so thorough that it was cleaner than I usually keep it; other times it was a cloth tarp quickly set down with a quick wipedown and sweep at the end (not as clean as I usually keep it), but I appreciate that everyone made an effort to clean the job site at the end of each day. I haven't had the new, efficient system long enough to see an appreciable change in my energy bills (April was slightly less than 2018 April bill, but hard to say if that's just inconsistent weather or the new system), but I can definitely FEEL the difference. I LOVE the new 5-speed fan system, which goes soft if just maintaining a temperature or harder if needing to change multiple degrees (which it can do much quicker than my old system). Also, it's "smart" enough not to put the fan full blast while there's still cold air in the ducts (my old system used to blow cold air when it first turned on and had only one speed). During the project, they handled most of the MassSave heat loan application and also responded quickly to questions, and were able to deal with challenges (like the narrow height of my bathroom ceiling) and changes (e.g., an unrelated plumbing project in the building which had impact on my condensate drainage pipe). They also submitted both MassSave rebates on my behalf. Although I generally like to support smaller businesses, having a larger business for this project, with a dedicated sales person / project manager (Jason Shea) made this project a lot easier for me. Sometimes you get what you pay for, and I think in this case, choosing a more expensive service gave me a much better experience. Also, on a side note, this project involved people of various skin tones and accents; white guys, Brazilian immigrants, they all did a great job - that's what makes America great, a mix of talented, hard-working and diverse people. I would definitely use Cooling Unlimited again and would recommend to anyone in the area who needs heat replacement. read more

This is insane! The tech that worked on my unit should be fired! I noticed a lot more dust than usual in my house. I called for a furnace service anyways for my unit during the winter time. My plumber was horrified to find the condition my furnace was in. I had this unit installed in 2012 and have maintained it religiously since 2-3 times a year it is serviced I have never had a problem with cooling unlimited until this past spring. I didn't bother checking the work because they are always good but now I will never hire them again. Not only did they bend my bracket to hold furnace shield on the unit, they improperly installed my filter which caused significant dust all in my unit but they TAPED THE PILIOT SWITCH DOWN! The only thing My plumber can think of is that this tech maliciously and possibly criminally damaged my property to cause harm to my family and damage to my property for the sole purpose to repair the damage they caused. I am very disturbed at what this tech did. I have 0 interest in ever using this company again and everyone else should think twice before using this company. I sent in a request to them for an estimate to have central air conditioning installed in my home. Didn't receive a response so I reached out to them again after a week-10 days. I got a response from Colleen who said she was out for a week and asked if I was still interested in receiving a quote. I replied I did and to let me know what time and day was convenient for them. We've been trying to resolve a Carrier air conditioning problem for over 12 months. On a hot day, the condenser stops delivering cool air with error code 46. So we have to do a hard reset of the air handler almost every day. Cooling Unlimited has made many visits and each time, they are unable to troubleshoot the problem, even after we disassembled the unit ourselves to read the flashing lights of the error code and call them with it. They don't seem to have enough familiarity with electronics or training on Carrier equipment to fix difficult problems. Very few companies service and repair Carrier to begin with, and it's disappointing that Carrier doesn't ensure the service companies are trained to actually fix problems with things like controller boards. read more

We have a Carrier heat pump that wasn't working. They sent a tech out, who suggested it might be the sensors. I didn't feel confident in his explanation, and after they were installed, it didn't solve the problem. He said he got an error message and that he was waiting to hear back from tech support. Two weeks later we have yet to hear back about the error. We did hear back from a business manager who was asking for an extra $1000 because they incorrectly charged us ~$400 for the sensors. When asked how much replacements to other parts of the pump or the entire unit, they would say "we couldn't believe the price " but wouldn't even give a ballpark figure. We would have gotten more heat from actually burning cash. Would not recommend. read more

Cooling Unlimited installed central AC in our home in November 2019. It was an excellent experience and I would highly recommend them! This was a brand new install, the house never had it before. The technicians were incredibly clean and took great care to minimize any dust, and cleaned up thoroughly after each day. They were friendly, and responsive to any questions I had. Dennis the owner also thoroughly and patiently answered all of my questions, as I had vetted this process extensively and wanted to ensure I was making the right decisions, based on the several (and sometimes conflicting) estimates from other companies. They also helped submit the rebates to RMLD for a nice credit to my electric bill. During A VERY hot day the day after the 4th of July my central Air compressor started to make a loud screetching noise and only blew warm air into my condo. After calling MANY companies who ALL told me that they're either NOT taking any new customers, and or that they couldn't come out because I didn't have a service contract, Cooling Unlimited came out. "Paul" arrived at axactly at 1 after I was given a 1-3pm response time. After inspection, he found a Conduit inside the compressor was leaning on the fan blade after it had come apart somehow. They gave me a Reasonable price compared to a couple places near me that were outrageous, and they came out last minute even though they were SWAMPED with other jobs. read more

I asked for your basic maintenance on my furnace. he did the cleaning then tells me the heat does not work right. Says the low water cut off / feeder is not working correctly, which is why the heater didn't kick on. Huh? heater worked find b4 he arrived. I paid my $129 for the furnace maintenance..then got a $1200 estimate to fix the issue. This sounded off to me...really off. I brought in a neighborhood plumber...who in less than 20 second found the ON/OFF switch was on OFF. No work needed to be done at all. OMG- are you kidding? I would avoid this company. You are not getting a sharp, astute plumber...instead you are getting inexperience and an opportunity to be ripped off. read more

I hired Cooling Unlimited to install a five zone Mitsubishi Hyper Heat mini-split system for my home. I received over ten estimates from various contractors including New England Ductless, N.E.T.R., Papalia Home Services, etc.. Although Cooling was not the cheapest, they were more affordable than most. The job was scheduled the week of Thanksgiving and was completed on November 26th. The job took four days and although this was longer than other estimates I received, the installers (Rozaire and Rudy) end up working in the rain and snow that week. The company does not perform installs on the weekends so the job had to be scheduled during the week and around the Thanksgiving holiday and Good Friday since the company was closed. Overall I was impressed with this work. Jason Shea the sales rep was very responsive. There was a misunderstanding in that I thought my estimate included the wi-fi interface, but it did not. Yet I still felt I received a reasonable estimate. The company filed my rebate paperwork and I found out that one of them (CEC) is missing so I am in the process of re-filing it. But I don't mind doing this. I thought it was nice that Cooling does this for its customers. The rates for their service contracts were too high so I will be shopping around for a cheaper price. Beyond that, I would recommend them to other customers looking for mini-splits. On a separate note, I have not seen the cost savings yet on my electric or gas bill, but I don't blame Cooling for this. It could be the technology which isn't as promising as I originally expected. If there were no rebates, I might not have chosen to have five units installed. I do expect the cooling to be a much better solution in comparison to window units during the summer months in Massachusetts. read more

So the background is that they installed 2 A/C units for us at a reasonable price. We did get several quotes and based on reviews on Angie's List, we decided to use them. In general, we were happy with their service other than the crew not really doing a great job cleaning up and leaving cigarette buds behind. Now flash forward to today (not even 1 year after). We use a different provider for our cooling/heating service contracts. In order to have the 2 new units under contract, they do a check to make sure that everything is in order. Well, one of the units did not have enough freon. According to the tech, the temperature differential should be around 20 degrees and the one unit was only 10 degrees. Verified this on the internet that 10 degrees is not enough. So I called Cooling Unlimited and asked them if they can resolve this issue or even just check out the units to verify. Well, this is why my current rating is so low. The attitude from the salesperson (the person who originally sold me the units) was not customer friendly. Trying very hard to place doubt on the other provider/tech. I don't blame him for this but his attitude again wasn't very customer orientated. What would any customer do with something that is still under warranty? So finally he stated that he need to talk with service and get back to me. Can you guess if he has call me back yet? Geez talk about disappointment. All they have to do is to check it and confirm. I even asked him - what if another service provider to comes out and check and they find the same numbers? I'll have to get it fixed and pay out of pocket. At this point, I am never going to recommend others there and I regret that I did recommend them to two other families. read more

Severely overpriced by ~4x. Not punctual (half an hour late on a work day - I was on my way out for work). So wish I didnt answer the door. Also charges a $149 diagnosis fee, which is fine if I couldn't tell what the problem was... Call me crazy, I just don't understand why I should pay someone that much money just for them to reiterate to me what I already understood and have previously told them over the phone. EVERY OTHER company offers complementary visits. I asked them to give me 2 estimates on 2 different complexity projects before I move forward with a decision and never heard back. They also told me i should replace the boiler but every other contractor told me it is fine. Anyway, decided to go with a different contractor but called them today to ask them to send me the bill for the $149, a cost I decided to eat, not because I think they deserve it, but because I dont want to be sent to collection. It's my first condo and I know that as a woman who doesn't understand jack about plumbing, I can get taken advantage of. So lesson learned. I had a rather negative experience with the Cooling Unlimited. My furnace kept shutting down and I called Cooling Unlimited. Their technician came at the end of the day and after trying to restart it a few times told me that it needs valve replacement (at least $400 to $500 worth of repairs). I trusted my gut feeling and called another company to come in and take a look. It turned out that furnace's motor needed cleaning and some air ducts in the house were obstructed - the valve was perfectly fine and is still working. I saved some money by not going for expensive repairs recommended by Cooling Unlimited's technician. It was also disappointing that I was charged not only for the visit/diagnosis (which is ok), but also $121 for "minor repairs" (the technician left without fixing the furnace). When I called the office to get that amount refunded, they told me that the owner will call back. I never got that call. read more

About 2 weeks ago, my wife noticed that the heat pump fan doesn't start to spin every time when she turned on thermostat. Sometimes it just hangs with a relatively loud noise. Then I called this company one day asking for help. They came quickly. I called about 8am and they came around 11am and was told that the technician happened to be in the same area that's why they could come so quickly. The technician asked me what went wrong and I showed him the problem. He then opened the heat pump and used his meters to do his diagnosis. After about 5 minutes he told me that the capacitor is broken he needs to replace it with a new one, and the price would be $129 for diagnosis + $250 for replacing the capacitor with a new one. I said to myself "wow, so expensive" but I want the heat pump to be fixed. After an unsuccessful negotiation I agreed to pay the price and let him fix the heat pump. In another 10 minutes the capacitor was replaced and the fan started spinning. I spent $379 for it. Anyway I got the heat, I thought. Then after a few days, we noticed the fan stopped spinning again. I felt upset and called them again and on the phone the lady told me they could waive diagnosis this time, which made me feel a bit better. The same technician came again. He was expected to come between 10 to 11am and didn't show up until 11:30. I don't blame him for being 30 mins late, but I couldn't watch him doing diagnosis this time because I need to be on a conference call when he came in. After about 5 minutes he came back telling me it's the motor that was broken this time. The price would be $129 for diagnosis + $465 for replacing with a new motor. I told him that I was told to not be charged with diagnosis fee, but he insisted it's different problem and he couldn't waive the diagnosis fee. This means I'll have to spend $1000 to let heat pump fan starts spinning. I asked the technician whether it's way too expensive. He just said "oh, yeah, things added up quickly". I started to suspect his diagnosis and asked him to bill me later. To make story short, I called another company and after all kinds of diagnosis they told me the motor works fine and it's the defrost sensor that was broken. After entering the defrost mode it can't exit. That's why sometimes the fan works fine while sometimes not. After changing the defrost sensor the heat pump is back to work. read more

We had Cooling Unlimited install a new high efficiency furnace in our Stoneham home. The sales rep, Charlie, was a delight and very helpful. Our problems were with installation and service. Charlie had assured us the intake and outake pvc pipes would go through the rear wall of our furnace room. The installers decided to pipe it through our garage, which surprised me when I returned home to see. This was not what we had expected nor wanted. We found that the installers were very sloppy and left screws and debris on the floor. We have a small dog and this was very upsetting. The worst part is that despite our old furnace having a "circulation" feature, which ran the fan, the new furnace did not. I called CU and got through to Dennis, the owner. He informed me that it would cost more to have this feature, and that it was not specified in the contract. I was very upset by this. Dennis did offer to credit us one service call, but I decided to find another vendor. While CU charged a fair price, I found the installation and service components both unacceptable! I replaced my old HVAC system with a 20 SEER system and a Mitsubishi ductless system. After receiving four quotes, Cooling Inc. offered the best value. The installation went smoothly and according to schedule. I'm very happy with the improved efficiency of the system and my reduced electric bills. Gina, in the office, was excellent to work with and took the lead on getting energy credit and rebates submitted.. The only reason I didn't give five stars was due to the lack of follow up by the technicians to check on how the system was working. Perhaps not a big thing, but given the cost of the system, I think a customer satisfaction inquiry would show a commitment on the part of the vendor. read more

A terrible experience overall! My husband and I could not have had a worse experience with CU. We hired CU to install a central AC/Heating system in May 2017. We were given a very reasonable quote and was told it was take four days to complete the job. I knew immediately when did they not show up on the date we had agreed upon that we had made a big mistake. The next day they arrived on time and started the installation - after this is was one issue after the next. To name a few: Insulation was left all over the floors upstairs from when they cut in the ceiling to install the vents; there was a shop-vac upstairs and in the basement that they could have used to clean up the mess A portion of our hardwood floor was damaged in one the bedrooms When the plumber initially came the first week, he left gaping holes on the side of the house and never returned We were informed that the crew would only need access to the left side of our garage - we came home to find plaster, installation and various other debris all over our belongings located on the right side of the garage; we also found multiple damaged items including: o 3 dining room chairs - all had dings or scratches o A wrapping paper container was completely destroyed o It was obvious that the crew had stepped on our belongings - as evident by their foot prints on our boxes! o Most importantly, no one called to tell us they had damaged our things, they simply left it in the garage for us to find o It took nearly two hours for us to clean the garage I returned home one night to find my bathroom in disarray - there was plaster, installation and mud on the tile; it was clear someone had actually stepped on our toilet because there was a muddy foot print Saw dust was all over the hallway and living room from when the hardwood floors were cut for the vents The lack of communication was incomprehensible - there was an entire week where no one showed up or even called. When all was said and done it took FOUR weeks to complete the job. There was a very obvious lack of professionalism and respect by the CU employees when working on our home. My husband and I have been down to CU offices more times than we can count and have asked to be compensated for the damages (they took the chairs to be repaired, but they were returned to us in the same condition) and no one responds to our request.
