This is the first time I've ever felt inclined to write a review on Yelp because I'd rather resolve issues with a place directly, but this review is to warn prospective patients, not for the clinic. Cooper Square Veterinary Hospital came highly recommended by a friend, so when I looked it up on Yelp out of curiosity & read negative reviews months ago I chalked it up to people being stereotypical sensitive cat owners (I humbly admit I was wrong). Here are some red flags: Unruly / Unsafe Environment for Pets Dr. G has his own dogs wandering the clinic who sometimes enter the treatment room by pushing the door open. This causes your already nervous pet to get even more panicked. On one such occasion, my cat started to nervously move when the dog entered the room and the doctor barked at his assistant that "you've got to hold him down!" and gruffly yanked my cat over to him. Rude to Staff Dr. G is openly hostile and rude to his staff. During one appointment he weighed my cat, ordering the assistant to enter "7.4 pounds" in to the records. He then proceeded to walk over to the computer and say, "I said 7.2 pounds why did you write this?? Enter it exactly as I say next time." The assistant and I just looked at each other. This is a tiny example of belittling behavior that causes his staff to seem tense and nervous at all times. There is no respect for them and it is palpable and deeply uncomfortable. Dismissive to Patients My cat was undergoing treatment for ringworm for 6 weeks. At our second appointment, Dr. G declared him cleared of the fungal infection, but when I asked about a spot on my cat's ear, he brushed me off stating, "that's probably nothing." Cut to 4 weeks later, my cat had an intense ringworm infection, that he also passed to me! Amazing. I refused to pay for another appointment when Dr. G suggested I come back to test my cat for ringworm, so he generously gave me the follow-up visit for free. My cat was given an anti-fungal oral medication for 3 weeks that had to be repeated due to it's failure to work. At the time of the follow-up appointment, my cat was scheduled for a neutering surgery one month later. There was no mention of the potential for the ringworm infection to cause any issues with the procedure. Two weeks later, my cat started showing side effects from the medication / no improvement and when I couldn't get a call back from the office, I decided to listen to my intuition and switch to another vet multiple friends recommended. Wrapping it up, I just met with that vet, and she was shocked that the doctor was going to proceed with surgery given my cat's compromised immune system. She said he would have been vulnerable to infection, or could have possibly contracted ringworm in the incision site. In the end, save yourself time and energy- pay a little more to be treated with respect and care. I've had pets all my life and I've never encountered a place like this. I don't really understand why Dr. G acts the way he does to his staff and clientele, but genuine prayers up he gets the help he needs to turn this behavior around. My beloved cat started seeming sick in February. Dr. G diagnosed him with CKD and recommended renal function food. His kidneys greatly improved in a couple of months. I proceeded to visit Dr. G at least every other month since then because my cat was inexplicably not getting better. They always got me in for an appointment the day I needed it. Dr. G and his staff were all so helpful and kind throughout all of these visits and tests, even during an appointment when my cat got extremely angry and scratched him. In the end, my cat had a very sneaky illness that greatly diminished his joy. Dr. G did everything he could to help, but I knew it was time for me to put him to sleep. My cat didn't want any more tests. During my cat's end of life appointment, they let me lead the way in terms of when I was ready for things to happen. They supported me during this excruciating choice to euthanize. I cannot recommend them enough and will be taking my other cat for her initial check up soon. We have been going to Dr. G for years. I am shocked I never posted a review! He and his staff are amazing. Knowing that we live on a tight budget he and his staff are always informative and honest about costs. I so appreciate this. We have 2 cats and a senior dog. I adopted my first cat in 2009 who was difficult and adorable -- I was a nervous wreck as a new pet owner. Dr. G. was fantastic with both of us-straightforward, no bs, no pandering!!!! He is passionate about animals and no-nonsense with people. Because of that, from the beginning, I knew I could trust Dr. G to never bs me or lead me astray. Then I got married and my husband and I adopted in another cat. Again, Dr. G was wonderful. When it was clear the little girl needed some rotting teeth extracted, even though we were nervous wrecks, we felt completely trusting of Dr. G and his terrific staff. Then just 2 months ago, we had a serious family emergency and had to remove a neglected and abused 11 year old senior dog from a horrific environment. Dr. G and his staff were so loving and careful with this beat-up old dog-got him all his shots and took care of some long-standing medical issues. We just returned to Cooper Square to have the dog's rotting teeth removed, as well as a growth. Things were much more complicated than expected. Dr. G stayed in touch with us through the many hours of work -- keeping us informed all along the way. At the end of the day, my husband and I went to pick up the old dog. The dog was fine, just dopey and tired. But we were wrecks. Dr. G stayed with us, making sure we were OK! He went above and beyond anything I would have expected from ANY medical professional-vet or human!!!! Dr. G and his staff are passionate about animals and it shows. Dr. G is also the perfect professional for nervous wrecks like me - direct, clear, straightforward - because he is so straightforward I get my butterflies in formation and get on with taking care of business. My dog was not doing well, vomiting and lethargic and I had taken him to another vet who had run blood work but neglected to run a pacreatic inflammation test. The tests he had run- amylase and lipase- had come up normal. He continued to vomit. I took him to Dr. G who suspected pancreatitis despite the other vet's blood work. He asked if he could run another test and it came up abnormal. My pet was hospitalized and transferred to an emergency clinic for 24 hour care on fluids. After about three days he recovered and is now on a GI diet. I am grateful to Dr. G for trusting his instincts and the physical exam over the previous blood work. read more

This independently owned vet is wonderful if you're looking for a doctor that loves animals and has a great staff as well. I took my two cats in for rabies vaccines and annual checkups but the vaccine hadn't been delivered to the office yet so Dr. Gagliardi personally scheduled a time to administer the rabies shots to my cats at home so I didn't have to make another trip. I'd like to leave an honest and fair review here because the staff of this practice is fantastic and this is clearly the best rated vet in the area for a reason as far as treatment and pricing goes. Dr G really is a knowledgeable vet, but unfortunately he either has a very short fuse or is severely overworked in a way that results in him being unnecessarily aggressive and combative. TL, DR: If you have a high tolerance for that, then you will truly get excellent treatment for your pet here. I sadly have ZERO tolerance for that behavior so I'm taking my business elsewhere. During my first interaction with Dr. G only a few days after adopting my cat, I was berated by him in the waiting room for arriving 10 minutes before my scheduled appointment time. I came early because I anticipated having to fill out paperwork, which I did, so I thought it was really bizarre that he stormed out to tell me I shouldn't have come early. What else is a waiting room for? It was a really strange experience, but he was ultimately great with my cat so I chalked it up to him having a bad day. That said, I brought her back two weeks later because I suspected she was pregnant. I don't know how that was missed during the first appointment, but regardless she ended up giving birth the following day. During the ultrasound appointment, Dr G very graciously offered to call a local rescue who agreed to take the kittens when they were ready to be away from their mother. He said the kittens had to "stay with the mother for 4 weeks". When I asked for the contact information for the rescue, he told me not to worry and he would facilitate everything. (Spoiler alert: This was a MASSIVE misrepresentation of the impact and expectation of cost on my end.) After receiving no follow-up, I called back at the end of May, after the kittens were nearly 6 weeks old, and left a message asking for information about weaning them and when I would be handing them over. There was a bit of phone-tag and then assurances that the staff would speak to the vet and call me back. I finally got some responses from Victoria (who is lovely) about weaning them and she assured me that they would let the rescue know about the kittens and call me back with an update on how to manage the handover. After not hearing back, I called again on June 7 asking for an update and letting them know the kittens were fully weaned and eating solid food. I was looking for a timeline of when I could expect to hand them over and how that would happen. I was told again that Dr. G would talk to the rescue and get back to me later that afternoon. This is now the third time I've been told "Dr. G will handle it and get back to you" and I was beginning to get a bit frustrated. I called back at 3:30pm, as I know they close at 5pm, and was told AGAIN that Dr. G was busy and he'd call me back. I waited. And waited. I called again at 6pm fully expecting to leave a voicemail letting them know I would make my own arrangements for the kittens, but Dr. G answered the phone and unleashed his full day of stress on me. I was told he is "busy and can't drop everything to deal with some kittens", that he "was never told that I was expecting to get the kittens out so soon", that he never intended to contact the rescue until the kittens were fully weaned and finally that he is "doing me a favor" by managing this situation. I told him I didn't realize he saw it that way he said "of course it's a favor to you to manage this situation on your behalf". I told him I could have taken them to any rescue in New York City if that's easier for him, and he continue to yell that it's not about what's easier "for him" but that he was doing this as a favor and didn't have to offer to facilitate. Mind you, at this point they hadn't actually DONE anything beyond the initial call. I tried to de-escalate, saying that I just want to know the timeline and I'm not trying to be a problem. He said he'd "make the arrangements" and he hung up. He called me back about thirty minutes later to tell me the rescue would take them, but I was now expected to pay nearly $300 for him to vaccinate them and test them for FIV and FLEV. He pushed off accountability for the bad communication on his staff and me for misunderstanding him. I reluctantly made an appointment for the following morning to get them treatment, but was left feeling so put-off by the conversation that I ended up calling and cancelling in the morning. I made a few phone calls and a very reputable rescue that same morning (who two of my friends have adopted from) got back to me immediately. I just handed them off yesterday. The rescue was incredibly kind and accommodating and is covering the cost of the treatment and even helping me get the mother spayed FOR FREE. If I had known what kind of abuse you have to endure in exchange for a "favor" offered freely by Dr. G I would have saved myself the stress and handled it on my own to begin with. read more

My review was deleted somehow... I see this has happened before to others. So I will try and reiterate my last one. Do not bring your pet(s) to see John Gagliardi. He is unprofessional, rude, and childish. I took my cat here because she was vomiting. He touched her stomach and said it could be allergies, gave us a wet food which she later threw up. He also gave us a tube of gel of some kind for hair balls (which was not the problem) and opened it without telling us if we even wanted it. We tested her for fecal parasites which came back negative. When I came to deliver my cats feces I asked if we could return this tube as we wouldn't be needing it, and the woman at the front desk went back and told him and he raised his voice and said, "it's only $14!" Came to me and uttered the same thing as if I couldn't hear it the first time and then said If I really wanted the money back he would give it to me, and I said yes that I would that I didn't think it was going to help her and it was a waste of money for us. He gave me a stare you wouldn't believe and proceeded to give me my money, all the while this was happening in-front of other patients (!!) He then snatched the bottle on the counter like a child and got me the $14. He spoke over both of us while at the first visit, didn't properly check my cat, said she was a fine weight (later took her to ABC vet, incredible place where they told us that she was 4 lbs over weight and gave her a shot for the vomiting and new dry food and she hasn't vomited since) just across the board the worst vet experience I have ever had. When he sent the negative test for the feces there was not even a call back, or to go over next steps, etc. Or to even ask how my cat was doing. Take your pet to ABC in the East Village or to Dr. Cross in midtown. The only reason we went to this guy was because he was very close to my mothers apt. Not worth it!!! read more

I highly recommend this Veterinary clinic!! I live in Miami Beach and was visiting NYC with my miniature dachshund Blossom. As an 11 year old, paralyzed pooch, she just didn't look well. My boyfriend had heard this vet was good, so I called an got an appointment the next day. Blossom was treated like royalty and the entire staff are very caring, kind, and warm. The clinic actually feels more like a cozy home, than a typical vet's office. Dr. Gagliardi was very thorough and has a calm demeanor. I wish I could find a veterinary clinic this good in Miami. Dr. Gagliardi is also involved in various animal advocacy activities and causes. This is so important to me as an animal lover. The day we went, while there, he was treating three fostered cats for free!! You can really feel he cares and has your pet's wellness as a top priority. I just have to say, I am so happy I switched vets. I could not be happier with Dr. G. My dog has been sick for almost two months now and we've run so many tests to come up with nothing. From the start, Dr. G has told me to get an ultrasound but I wanted to run more tests as it is expensive. I ended up doing the ultrasound and we came up with a solution and so far it's working. Not only does he know his stuff, but he has been calling me everyday since we started treatment to see how my dog is. Now that is a good doctor. My own personal doctor doesn't even call me to tell me that my tests came back negative, but Dr. G calls to make sure things are going well. I followed others' good reviews and took my indoor cat to this vet. And it was a disappointing experience from the start. The nurses/assistants seemed thrown off upon our entry. One person verbally asked to take my and the cat's background information in order to enter data into their system. I was OK with this being a standard procedure, until two other assistants started collecting similar information from me verbally while they are handling my cat. I expected undivided attention to the animals in the examination room. I didn't understand why the assistants were soliciting some of the background information from me repeatedly when they did not need the info to treat the cat. Perhaps the worst part of the experience was that the first thing the assistant tried to tell me while handling the cat was introducing the clinic as a "small clinic that cares about everyone and it is open on Saturday". I am not sure why the promotional speech is needed while the trust is not yet built, and more importantly, while the nervous cat is still in their hand on the examination table. I gleaned a similar vibe later on as well. The good bits: The doctor seemed professional and caring. And responded promptly to my questions. There was a vet dog running loose in the clinic. Everyone seems to know the dog but I did not and was startled while waiting with the cat, when no one else was attending to the clinic. The staff apologized. I have 2 ancient wiener dogs (one is 19 years old, the other is 16). Their health is very good, but they only get there with good veterinary care--and I don't care if their veterinarian is softspoken or spritzes lavender oil into the room as I enter. I care if their vet is, bottomline, knowledgeable and compassionate about my dogs' wellbeing. This, I say, after taking my dogs for 9+ years to a veterinary practice that doled out hugs and smiles and whatnot, but misdiagnosed my dogs not once but three times. (Once, my dog had gastritis, and had to be re-rushed back to emergency care in the middle of the night (and ended up staying overnight 3 days) because the vet told me he was fine. The second time, my dog had a skin yeast infection that they treated with antibiotics (wrong choice of medication--antibiotics worsens yeast infections) and so my dog unduly suffered over a span of 3 years). Dr. Gagliardi is a bottomline oriented veterinarian. His speech can come off as brusque, but I find it refreshing to have a veterinarian who tells me like it is, who makes correct diagnoses (my dogs no longer have yeast infections on their skin and they are HAPPY as CLAMS thanks to Dr. G), who calls me to followup on my dogs' wellbeing, who makes sure his veterinary assistants carry my dogs in a way that supports their long backs, and who has shown in his behavior that he cares deeply about his work and his canine patients. He is also amazingly detail-oriented, and has picked up on details of my dogs' health that went unnoticed for nearly two decades. It gives me miles of comfort to know my geriatric dachshunds are in such good care. And as a sidenote: Dr. Gagliardi's front desk staff is wonderful and caring. His assistants seem to rotate a bit, but they've all been nice and well-intended. read more

Solid vet. Nice staff. Accommodating regarding dropping off and picking up, which is important for any working person. I have never had to speak with Dr. G. at much length, since thankfully my dog is healthy. I know him tangentially through social connections, so my brief, completely satisfying conversations may well be because of that, but I think it's more so because he's a decent guy, solid vet, and cares mainly about the rational care of pet animals. Also, he also has things like an online pet patient portal, etc. As a human, primary-care doctor, I was a bit disturbed when I saw that his bill for a routine visit was more than I make for a routine visit seeing humans, but his rates are on the low side of average, and certainly lower than most vets that deliver the service he does. read more

Disclaimer: We have the sickest Bulldog in the world. We purchased a puppy from a breeder who clearly wasn't the best and as a result Hazel came to us with a lot of health problems and has continued to catch just about any germ she can. She is also the love of my life. Dr. G and his whole team has worked with us through 2 hospital stays, 2 additional respiratory illnesses, mange, ear infections, eye infections, puppy warts, UTI, and spaying (plus a few I have forgotten). I know Hazel's quality of life wouldn't be as good as it is with out Dr. G's care and concern for her and ours would be worse as well. We don't think she would have lived through her first pneumonia hospitalization without him. I plagued with fear about what else she will catch but I know he can get her through it. My boyfriend said just today, "We can never move out of this neighborhood because we would be too far from the vet", that is how important he and his team is to us and Hazel. I am surprised people feel that Cooper Square is expensive. We feel the opposite and additionally Dr. G. goes through pricing of all of the options with us each time we are there to be helpful. We tell every bulldog owner we see about Dr. G because we know the breed has a lot of issues and he has been so great with our Hazel. read more

We just relocated here and needed to establish a vet for our geriatric pug. We were also doubly worried because he hadn't been acting himself and had gotten sick the day before our appointment. We had to wait a while because the doctor was running behind, but it was a busy Saturday so we understood. Despite seeing us at the end of his busy day, Dr. Gagliardi took his time with my dog and answered my millions of questions about stuff unrelated to my dog's acute problem. My mini doxie will be turning 6 this summer and I must confess that her good health & my sanity as a pet parent are largely due to the terrific care and compassion that I've received from John & his staff. I freely confess that I can be a bit neurotic at times, most especially when it comes to my pup. When we arrive for appointments, or when I call, the staff greets us by name. John, himself, is always patient & honest with me, answering a million & one ridiculous questions or concerns that I might have. He clearly gets that his four-legged patients are only half of his job--dealing with the human parents is the other half- and probably most challenging. A prime example was when my pooch was just about a month old, I called the office late one Sunday night in tears. Something was terribly wrong! Within a few minutes John returned my call, calmed me down, and was headed to his office to meet me @ 10pm @ night! It turns out she had impacted anal glands (yuck!) A few days after that, he called to check up on my little lunatic to see how she was doing. I couldn't ask for a better medical professional! I only wish that my doc would give me a followup call after my annual exam! This is typical of John and of the level of care, professionalism and dedication that he gives his patients. While I have been taking my first cat to saint marks vet on 9th street for a few years, I decided to try out Cooper square with my new kitten because the visit was a little cheaper and the reviews were pretty positive. I'll be sticking with Saint Marks. The appointment was just a basic new kitten assessment, but I was in the office for nearly 2 full hours- most of which was spent waiting. I wasn't seen by anyone for at least 20min past my appointment slot, and then I waited in the exam room for another 30 or so (at least!) in between the tech's intake and the vet's exam. The exam itself seemed thorough and I don't question or doubt the information I was given, but I was made to feel like I had done something wrong by letting the rescue organization neuter him at 3 months (this is pretty standard...) and I felt like the practice wasn't generally supportive of TNR/kitten rescue organizations. I also had to take the initiative to ask to treat my older cat for the parasite my kitten needed treatment for, even though they knew I had another cat at home and that they share a litter box. It also didn't help that the doctor clearly didn't like my kitten's name and asked if I was going to keep it! I know a lot of the reviews say his bedside manner is gruff but his care is excellent, but I walked away feeling like he thought I was dumb and that the care my kitten received was adequate but not exceptional. I believe you can have excellent *and* respectful care, which is why my cats are going right back to saint marks vet. read more

He has always made the right diagnosis (one of my dogs has several serious health conditions) and has always been great at following up if I'm treating a dog at home, checking to see that the dog is recovering as he or she should. He always thoroughly explains the condition, the treatment, and what to look for in terms of progress or a lack thereof. I have always found that he puts my dogs' health above all else, and I've always had positive experiences with him. Me and The Woo (Wookie) my chunk of a 14lb Shih Tzu have been on Dr. Gagliardi's exam tables from the giddy-up, when she was a 4lb fluff ball back in 2000. She's so not a fan of the violation, but it MUST be done! A few years after I got Wookie, my then boyfriend got himself a Pitbull/English bulldog pup who was nothing but a ball of energy with lots of excess skin. She couldn't be stopped...until shortly after her second birthday. Something severe was happening to slow down a rocket dog like Stella at such a young age. Turned out she had Leukemia. Wookie's visits are always pretty standard and largely relegated to poo-in-the-butt-pockets removal, and thank JESUS there's some like Dr. Gagliardi to do that, because I'm certainly not willing or able! She was never much of a challenge. Stella; however, was a different story. Once her health began to go south it went pretty rapidly. I know my boyfriend had Dr. Gagliardi on speed dial and the man answered his calls everytime at all hours of the night. This vet did everything in his power to help her get better and as I recall (this was back in 2006) he very much did extend the days we got to spend with Stella for as long as he could. Once she finally did succumb to the Leukemia, Dr. Gagliardi made arrangements for my boyfriend to come, after hours, to let her go. Men aren't supposed to cry, and women aren't supposed to see them cry, but there are always exceptions. Having to say goodbye to a beloved pet surely qualifies. Dr. Gagliardi allowed it this to happen in a highly dignified manner for all involved. I've read a few of the other not-so-positive reviews on here and all I can say is Dr. Gagliardi's demeanor is a little misconstrued: This is medicine and medicine serious. The care of your pets is serious. He's simply direct. My visits to Dr. Gagliardi's office are always top notch, even though The Woo doesn't challenge him much. Stil, I've always had respect for him for being gracious to me and most certainly for what he did for Stella. Can't recommend him enough. read more

I have owned cats all my life, have consulted with many vets, and Dr. Gagliardi is by far the best we've ever had the pleasure of seeing. We have always referred our friends in the neighborhood here and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a vet. It is always clear that he cares about your pet's needs first and foremost and will go above and beyond for them. I have been seeing him since shortly after I moved to the East Village in 2007 and he has treated each cat with spectacular respect and care. Emerald, an elderly Russian Blue, saw him often because she had asthma. When she developed corpuscles--very painful for her though not dangerous--we saw him every day at minimal charge until she was all better. When I got new kittens after Emerald passed, they did not respond well to being fixed. I was concerned and was hand-feeding them to get them to eat. Dr. G asked me to bring them back in so he could monitor them more closely, all part of the cost of the original surgeries. Once they were ready to go home, after business hours, Dr. G helped me walk them back to my home about 10 minutes away. It was such a sweet and helpful gesture that I have never forgotten. Now, my husband and I have all of our cats under one roof (we have four!) and all go to Cooper Square. Our aging population needs closer medical attention, which has been trying emotionally and financially. Dr. G is extremely considerate of our financial constraints, always offering multiple options and pathways for us with upfront pricing. Nothing unnecessary is ever done. He has stayed open late when we have had emergencies so that we did not need to go to the more expensive emergency vet. When he was closed and we did need to go to the emergency vet, he acted promptly to send our cat's chart to that vet and followed up later via text to make sure she was okay. Last night, our cat Vera who has been diagnosed with heart problems (HCM), went into heart failure. This is not the first time, but it was the worst. She was panting and heaving. She has already lived longer than we expected from the very dire diagnosis she got from the cardiologist and we've been through several emergencies with her over the last year. We thought this was the last one. My husband called Dr. G towards the end of the business day and he cautioned that though we could bring her to the emergency vet, he felt she was in such a weakened state that she could die merely from transporting her. Instead, he came over within a half an hour and delivered shots that saved her life. She began recovering almost immediately and has staved off death one more time. I spoke with him this AM and he is charging us minimally for the house call. I am honestly overcome with gratitude with his sensitive, thoughtful, and caring treatment of this old battle-axe cat. She is not the sweetest cat (he described her claws as razors at her last visit!) but he gives her the utmost care. Okay I'm bawling that's it. read more

My new pup has been a patient here for a few months now and We've had nothing but positive experiences. Dr. G made himself available after hours when we needed medicine when our pup was sick. The techs and staff here are super friendly and knowledgeable as well. Definitely recommend! read more

Let me start off by saying that I'm only writing this comment about the Vet John Gagliardi, the rest of the staff appeared cordial enough. I initially went here because the place that we purchased our adorable but rambunctious baby frenchie referred us there and told us that the first visit would be "free". Well obviously the visit wasn't free, i felt pressured into buying several products from the office ranging from food, tooth paste, ear cleaner, and diagnostic tests. All said and done the bill was close to 300 bucks when I walked out the door, but of course this isn't the reason why I'm taking the time to write this review, as with anything in nyc, going to the vet can be expensive. My real qualm with cooper squre vet hospital is the treatment I received from Dr. Gagliardi. He was condescending from the start and when I did ask him a question his answers were littered with unuseful medical jargon(which I am well familiar with since I'm a physician). I'm extremely surpsied by his attitude given how much they were charging for everything. The final insult which made me write this comment happened today when I called to cancel my appointment tomorrow for an additional treatment which 2 other vets I took her to see after Dr. Gagliardi said was superflous. He was extremely rude and said that he'd mark her care as "incomplete" and said I could do what I want before abruptly hanging up on me. Which of course means nothing to me as I'd never take her back to him nor ever recommend him. With a vetnernarain office almost every few blocks here in manhattan, I'd definitely recommend you go elsewhere when looking for a vet. read more

Anybody else feel terrible for Ben, one of the assistants? I swear each time I visit, he's being being yelled at. "Ben, Come here!" "Ben, what are you doing?" "Ben, where are you?" It's pretty discomfiting. Related? But otherwise, a step up from where i was before. read more

This review is about Dr. Gagliardi (the vet at this practice). I have to say I was very, very disappointed in the visit. You likely don't need to know more than this one quote he said to me, in the midst of my questions about whether my puppy should be socialized: "Look, I don't care whether your dog gets sick or not, I'm just telling you what I'd do with mine." Really? He doesn't care. Wow. More than that, he doesn't realize people want a vet who actually cares, or at the least pretends to care, about the person's puppy? This was awful. Beyond that, when I called the morning after my visit to say my dog had thrown up, the receptionist communicated some advice, I then asked to please speak to the vet. Instead, the person called back and said, I spoke to him, and he said what I told you is fine. He wouldn't call me. After numerous calls, he called back. This is terrible behavior for someone who wants to be entrusted with a loved pet. I have many friends with dogs in NYC who have vets who they can call, who really care about their dogs, and I made the mistake of just trying to find someone close. That's all. read more

I first used Dr. John Gagliardi at Cooper Square Vet in 2012 when I fostered two kittens. i now use him for my two older cats, also. Currently, dealing with asthma for on cat:( Dr. G. is knowledgeable and very dedicated -- available off hours by phone and email. It is obvious that he cares a great deal about the pets that he treats. The staff is fabulous -- friendly and great with pets. Highly recommend. read more

Dr G. is very blunt, so if you're used to pussyfooting and coddling, he may not fit your taste, but he really cares about his patients and if you want competence, someone who won't subject your pet to unnecessary and costly tests, this is the right vet for you. read more

Just visited Dr G for the first time. As a born and bred New Yorker, I can say he's exactly how I like my doctors: straightforward, no nonsense, knowledgable. He seemed nice enough but more importantly, the assured way he handled my cat is the most important thing and his answers to me about my questions gave me confidence that he truly loves and understands the animals he cares for, the mark of a great vet! His no nonsense demeanor is balanced by his very friendly and super upbeat staff. read more

I can totally understand why Dr. G's ratings are so split. He is definitely the "you either love him or you hate him type". Basically, if you need someone to be all smiles and hold your hand at the vet then don't go to him (even though all the support staff there will). Instead of all that you get competency and intelligence. He may not be the most punctual or friendly person, but he is straight forward, honest, and really cares about animals. If he tries to get you to buy extra flea medication or ear wash that's just because he cares if your pet has fleas or ear mites! He may not know the most about customer service, but he does know the most about your dog's health and that is personally what I will always prefer. read more
