This is one of our favorite places in Plymouth. The staff are very nice and accommodating. We joined their wine club a few months ago and it's very flexible. Today we are picking up a wine futures order. I do recommend that if you have to use the restroom you use the one that's in the tasting room. I've been to Borjon several times for tastings and events like Big Crush and Behind the Cellar door. The wine is great but the pours are always very small, the staff are not very friendly and the food is not great (in the past it was a quesadilla) so we stopped going. We went again for Big Crush this year. I was hoping things had improved and was hopefully at the description of the food on the Bug Crush website ("Amazing food from Nora's kitchen"). I was wrong. Staff were friendlier this time, but did not explain the wine. Pours were small. The food was 1 cheese quesadilla per person. The lady serving made sure of that with a sign stating that and recorded down each one given out. Overall, we didn't feel very welcome. We will not be back. read more

It had been at least 5 years since we came to Borjon. They are even better than what we remembered. Their reds were truly to die for! The lady in the tasting room was extremely knowledgeable about wines and Amador County. We tasted 5-6 wines a piece - we were able to share to be able to taste more. I highly recommend walking around the tasting room. They have beautiful Spanish saddles! They also have a restaurant on the premise that serves up Mexican food - who can resist that!?! read more

This is an update, and I've been a club member for some time, and so I sometimes get to be a bit persnickety. My wife thinks I'm high maintenance, and, on occasion, she's known to be right. That's relevant here because the wine is so good that it's often very crowded. it's also on the main road with a huge parking lot, and so it's pretty easy to find and park. So, they've got the formula down. Good wine + good visibility + plenty of parking + nice employees = happy wine drinkers = big crowd. What a pleasant experience it was to be there on a Thursday afternoon on a glorious Spring day in April. For the first time ever, we were, for about six minutes, the only customers in the tasting room. As it turns out, it's a nice room. The other new finding on this trip was that they are now allowing you to taste their very expensive wine. We got to taste $100 Barbera and the $130 Cabernet. Without going into a whole bunch of detail, I'd simply suggest that you plan for a crowd, have a good attitude, and enjoy some good wine. All the best! read more

Mixed reception at first. We were asked if we had a reservation, which we did not, so the manager suggested that he might have a table outside. He said he would check but never seemed to leave the tasting bar to check. He finally provided 2 glasses and menus and said we could decide which wine flight we wanted to taste. Eventually, a young woman started pouring for us at the bar. It was a little awkward, but they were busy and these things happen. Overall, the wine was pretty good. They also have food on the premises, but I overheard the manager telling another customer that the food was gone for the day, this was probably at about 2:30. The young woman pouring for us was shy at first but then opened up when I told her that a wine club member who is a friend of mine recommended that we stop at Borjon. Excellent wines and staff. Borjon wasn't on our itinerary for the day but I recognized the logo and impulsively stopped in with my parents a few weeks back. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, taking us through their THREE different flights (we did one each and had a blast). The price point on a few of the reserve wines gets up there but their wide variety of Barberas are sensational. We walked out with several bottles and great memories. We'll be back! read more

Hello all, my wife and I belong to 5 other wineries in the area. We joined them(Borjon) for 3 months, we showed up for the first club release and they didn't know we were getting a shipment. We discovered Borjon in 2010 when a waitress at Lucca (downtown Sacramento) recommended a bottle of the 2009 Barbara. Mind blown. We've been drinking their wines ever since. The service by their employees is impeccable. Every time we've made the trek to Plymouth we have been treated like the valued customers we are. Borjon Winery adds a youthful, Latin flavor to the uber-traditional wine area known as Shenandoah Valley. Not all wine tasting has to include serious discussions about tannins, "nutty or fruity" flavors or what the wine pairs best with. I doubt most people actually know what they're talking about when they have these discussions. At Borjon, they make serious wine for the casual drinker. I didn't feel inferior because I didn't know a thing about blends or varietals. It's an energetic atmosphere with a fun, casual staff who know that some people like drinking wine for the sake of drinking. I first stopped in during an Amador wine event and they had pulled out all the stops: a mariachi band, free tamales and burritos and, of course, some great wine. I had a chance to chat with the owner and he is obviously enthusiastic about bringing a different vibe to stodgy old wine country. Again, I don't know much about wine, but if I were to recommend one bottle from Borjon, I'd go with the 2007 Xinfandel. read more

All the wines I tasted were young, fruity and tight. These have aging potential and most likely will be getting bigger notice as time passes. These wines are going in the right direction. We tasted Primitivo, Barbera, Zin, Petite Sirah and Los Portales (blend). Noe Avila the tasting room manager is very talented with people and has a natural grace with folks. We purchased ECKS 2001 Rose Wine at $17 - it is a steal. Don't start on me about Rose wine - try it and then tell me. read more

Stopped by for a wine tasting after a hiatus for a few years. Originally known for their awesome Barbera and sangiovese, I was shocked to see over 15 different varietals and blends, few of which are locally grown. They no longer have a tasting of their great El Potrero label. We tried all 3 available flights and discovered that the Barbera and sangiovese reposados are still the best, although not the quality they once were. Everything else, with the exception of the Bull rider ($110?!), was very underwhelming. Sadly, it seems that Borjon has tried to offer too much at the expense of their core strengths. read more

My fiancé and I decided to stop at one more winery while in the area picking up our membership wines. We were quickly approaching Borjon and made a split second decision to pull into the parking lot. We were not disappointed. When we arrived there was still plenty of parking available and a live band playing, turns out this was a big event weekend for a lot of the wineries, we were clueless. We made our way into the tasting room which has 2 tasting counters, a small one to the right of the entrance and a large one directly ahead. In addition there was a tequila display to the left of the entrance and a table with chocolate for sale. We obviously looked lost and didn't know where to go but were quickly greeted and brought over to the main tasting counter. Shelbi took us on our journey through the Borjon wines. Since this was an event weekend, they only had one $5 tasting option available, which was fine. We started off with a Rose, which was actually clear, both my fiancé and I were not fans and then became skeptical of what the rest of the wines would have in store... Our next pour cleared those apprehensions. Every single pour of their reds were phenomenal! Shelbi was an incredible host, extremely friendly and knowledgeable. She explained each of the wines, the winery and even poured us a specially taster of an off menu wine, The 2014 Pasion! This Pasion is a 50% Barbera and a 50% Cabernet Sauvignon with a white wax topper over the cork. My fiancé kept eyeing this bottle and after our taster, we came home with it. Borjon appears to be an ever expanding winery, with a tequila collection on display and possible tequila tastings in the future. It is a refreshing change to the traditional tasting rooms found in the region. We didn't become wine club members on Sunday, but I guarantee that will occur in the near future. After a couple years of driving by this winery and never stopping, my husband finally said "you know, we should check this place out!" And I'm glad we did. One quick call to the winery later, we were all set for a tasting the following day. Red wine lovers (especially Barbara) you are in for a real treat! Let me start by saying that this place has awesome branding and a very impressive tequila collection in the entranceway. This place was not on our original itinerary but we found ourselves here because the have a very good Mexican cafe on site and we needed lunch. While waiting for our lunch, we decided to do a wine tasting. The wines were hit and miss. Some where not my cup of tea and others were a grand slam. I did end up buying some of the grand slams. This says a lot because I tend to be more picky when it comes to my wine. The customer service here was also top notch. The staff was friendly, professional, and knowledgable. Overall, I did like this place and they do have some good wines so I do recommend them for a try. read more

I really don't understand why business owners hire staff that should really be kept in a back office behind closed doors rather than behind the counter "greeting" customers. I walked in and bellied up to the wine bar. A woman put a glass in front of me and just poured a taste without offering a clue as to what I was tasting. When I asked what she had poured, she put a list in front of my and just pointed to the name of the wine. No smile, no eye contact, no words out of her mouth. This is the biggest turn off! It is really unfortunate that this was my first impression of this place because it had been recommended by another winery that I really like. This was a first time visit. I love the wines and the tasting room but BUYER BEWARE! We did a "collections" tasting at $18.52 for 2. We liked and we bought 2 bottles for $52 total. When I looked at our receipt a whopping $4.63 had been credited for tasting. Seriously? You spend better than $50 and still net nearly $14 for the honor. I know the personnel explained this but they were pretty stretched that afternoon and no real dollars and cents were mentioned. No wonder their wine club is so attractive and I'm sure this is a motivational tool. But speaking of tools, I'm not one so I won't go back. I completely get the point of charging to taste...and I realize $52 isn't a lot for wine, but there are far too many wineries in that valley where you do not incur such a high cost of tasting. read more

First let me start by saying this review would have 4-5 stars had we not run into a little snafu. While I understand wineries need to protect themselves when accommodating larger groups (ours had 12 w/11 of us tasting), this is why we were not opposed and happily prepaid the tasting fee (as we did with a few wineries this day) to hold our spot. Once finished with the tasting there were several of us who were interested in purchasing 2-3 bottles per couple. We were told our tasting fee would not go towards the purchase of our wines. As a group that walked away from this trip with well over 25 bottles of wine purchased & a few memberships signed, you may want to rethink this policy. You have delicious tasting wines, great staff and beautiful grounds but because of this policy, sadly we ended up forgoing several bottles from you that day on principal alone. Both of our hosts were great but Shelbi was absolutely fabulous! She was engaged, educated about the wines (and process) as well as friendly. If for only one reason my husband & I venture back, it will be because of her. This winery is beautiful with inside & outside covered tasting. Comfortable tables & chairs to sit and relax in. The chocolate was divine and homemade. If it weren't for the standing group policy I mentioned above, we would have made this a regular stop. This is one of the best kept secrets in Amador, but it's only a matter of time until the genie comes out of the bottle! The Latin flavor here gives a vibe that sucks you right in. Often they have a salsa pairing to go with the wines. They make their stuff from scratch and are working toward building an event center and small Mexican deli onsite. I have been here numerous times for tastings and have been quite surprised each time with how the wines get better as they age. See Noe... He throws down a mean tasting with lots of great conversation. They make great Zins and Barbara, and often have a nice case special. This is such an amazing young winery! The fun attitude shared by all who work here makes your visit very light hearted and enjoyable. There is a total lack of any pretentious or snobby vibes here like you'll find at more than a few Northern California wineries. The wines here are all solid, yet approachable by even novice wine enthusiasts. The Barbera in particular stands out to me. This is a varietal that I'm very partial to, but I find that it's very difficult to get it right. Borjon has it figured out and they got it spot on!! Though I have not tasted any of their wines that I wouldn't gladly pay for. Aside from the great wines, Borjon has a fresh take on winery events. They have featured "Artists of the month" that come in and have a display set up on some weekends. On top of that there are some great things going on with food and wine pairings here. During the summer months they do a wine and salsa pairing out on the patio. During the cooler months the delectable treats from Wine Country Truffles are featured in the tasting room for wine and chocolate pairings. Beautiful tasting room with a Tequila Museum (miniature museum). I would give them 5 stars if they would just waive that stupid tasting fee charge. We did buy two bottles of their Garnacha, which is fantastic by the way. But the Fee? We ended up sitting outside in their beautiful patio area and had lunch. As soon as that tasting fee goes away, I will rate them at 5 stars. Their wine is good and they should known that people will buy more if they are not insulted with being charged before they taste. Went in there yesterday. There were other people in there, but it wasn't overly crowded. On about half the bar, there were reserved signs. The pourers, who weren't busy, just looked at us. We went to a table that had a menu on it. Nobody showed up, so we left. Awful experience in comparison with every other winery we visited. Had their wine at a restaurant later in the evening.
