Great atmosphere and good selection of food (could have more gluten free choices). We ate here several times during our 8 night stay at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. We went for dinner at least 3 times and we also used their grab and go breakfast in the morning. One morning my husband grabbed a ham and cheese croissant to take with him to golf but when he opened it there was no ham! I did get the quiche there twice and it was good. I do wish they had some gluten free choices in the morning. At dinner their drinks were good. They had live music and a dancer and that was nice. One night it was crowded and the service was terrible-my friend had to go to the bar to get another drink because we couldn't find our waitress. But overall the staff was friendly and helpful. It is overpriced, but it is in a resort in Hawaii so that is not a surprise. It was very convenient for us. Over our stay we had a burger there, sushi, pizza, Caesar salad, soup, and a sweet potato veggie entree that was gluten free and really good. Food was a joke, false advertising. We ordered the roasted beet and goat cheese salad and got boiled beet (1) and no goat cheese. When we noticed there was no cheese, we asked the waiter and she said-Oops forgot to mention we are out of goat cheese. Then we asked if they were going to give us a replacement and only then we were given a choice of Parmesan cheese or mozzarella cheese and no apologies. The portion of arugula was barely a half cup. Don't order the flat breads, mine was so hard to chew, it was over baked and burned. It was bad. I can't believe they can serve food like that! We had dinner a few times here. The special flatbreads were consistently great, the house-made ginger beer was delicious, and the hamburger is a must at least once! We had the piña colada shaved ice for dessert one night, and wow. Super delicious and a light dessert. Would definitely recommend it. While enjoying our stay at the Westin, we took a trip over to the Copper Bar for lunch. It was pretty slow and open seating was available. The service was good. My wife and son had the frozen Mai Tai which was one of their most favorite drinks on our trip. Just like most things at these resorts, the prices were high. Unfortunately, the server seemed like he wanted to be anywhere but there. 2 of the 7 dishes we ordered were really good- Fresh catch special and pasta. Hamburger was ok. Wouldn't recommend the ahi, truffle fries, beet salad or California roll. The drinks also weren't very good, especially for the price. If you're staying at the resort the Copper Bar is certainly an ok option for lunch or dinner. Just nothing real memorable. It's easy to make a reservation online and secure the table you want. Overall prices (including wine) seemed reasonable. We dined here on several different occasions. Both for lunch and dinner during our stay at the resort. We sampled the chicken sliders, margarita pizza, grilled caesar with focaccia bread and the Mauna Kea sushi roll. I loved the grilled caesar and focaccia bread. My hubby found the signature sushi roll to be very rich and almost too filling as he couldn't even finish it all. The sliders were tasty and so was the pizza but the crust could have been more crisp. Overall ambience is nice but casual. If you eat here for dinner and come to watch the sunset you'll want to request a table closer to the oceanside. After it's dark it doesn't really matter. There is a bar here but it doesn't offer any views of the ocean as it's tucked inside this open air restaurant. read more

Ok, the view is pretty great. But the food is bad. The "flatbread" pizzas are disappointing. I tried the proscuitto & arugula ($23), the carnivore (sausage, proscuitto, house bacon, smoked provolone ?? $22), and the Hamakua mushroom (truffle, white sauce, $21). The crust is not good. I'm thinking maybe "flatbread" is some kind of cop-out for actually making a good pizza crust? For the arugula and proscuitto, the proscuitto was scant and the arugula wasn't even arugula, it was crappy and plentiful frisee or curly endive. And whoever thought putting ricotta on this pizza was a good idea is an idiot. Burrata would have been 1000x better; the ricotta was just gross. The carnivore pizza was ok, but the bacon was undercooked and as a result super-fatty and chewy. The mushroom pizza was the best. However, I didn't detect any truffle flavor at all, though there was a lot of garlic. I hadn't ordered it, so I didn't realize it was even supposed to have truffle until I went to write this review. The "Italian" soda was ok but not worth ordering. My wife was okay with her red-white-and-blue vodka drink. read more

Had calamari and ribs for dinner. The calamari was good. There were some hard pieces though. The slaw it comes with (underneath the calamari) is pretty good. The ribs was a little disappointing. It's not the melt in your mouth kind of ribs that we are used to. read more

So YOU'LL have to decide if that's worth it to you. We came because we'd been told you can see the Manta Rays at night here, which is true. However I have a sneaky tidbit for you: YOU DON'T HAVE TO EAT HERE TO SEE THEM. They have a little walkway, right next to their fancier restaurant (not this one) that takes you right down to where there's a water lookout. And the hotel actually has a bright light under the water that they turn on that attracts the Manta Rays!! SUPER cool, i highly recommend doing this. But maybe take my advice and do it without eating here. And honestly i'm torn about this review. Because the Lounge is BEAUTIFUL, and the ambiance is killer. I adored the little chairs and table, they're super trendy & they were comfy, too!! Also, their french fries were a MUST. So if you DO decide to dine here, def chow down on the fries. You can thank me later, boo. Honestly, I might go back here if i'm ever on this island again. But you have to be prepared for horrible service and for seriously overpriced food and drinks. And don't freak out if you see a couple cockroaches running around (the restaurant IS outside and all... there's no way for them to prevent that). But i'm warning you in case you're a bug freak. Come for the view but don't stay for the food. Great sunset view but this is really just a hotel bar with over priced food that lacks flavor, mixed service, loud patrons (and kids), etc. We called to make reservations letting them know we were celebrating our anniversary. We arrived to argue with Linda the hostess that we had reservations and she literally fumbled with the ipad reservation system even deleting another persons reservation. Table was dirty and candle was sooty (wife had to clean her hands and fortunately didn't get it on her cloths). David, the server, was pretty decent but we had to ask for refills. The food was so lackluster that I am struggling to remember what we had. The bacon was tasty but nothing special. The Sunset sushi roll lacked flavor and had too much sauces. The fried chicken sliders were a joke... overall dry with no taste (had to put the bacon to make palatable) - you get better flavor from Tyson or KFC or Mcdonald's chicken nuggets. Lobster soba noodles was soupy with chewy lobsters (noodles were decent). So disappointing since the Copper Bar had been lauded in a food magazine. Nothing like dropping a $100 for mediocre food. BTW, remember we had mentioned we were celebrating our anniversary. Well they did absolutely nothing special (not even a congratulations). Probably going to track down the manager Janine to follow-up on all the above. However in the meantime avoid this restaurant and try the many other choices in the area that have both great views and food. read more

Wanted very much to enjoy a relaxing dinner. Got seated at a lovely table, ordered small plates, sashimi and a bottle of wine. Got the wine right away then our waiter disappeared. About 30 minutes later our small plates arrived. No utensils. No napkins. No plates. Our server was MIA so we asked the person who brought the food for plates, utensils, napkins and pepper. We each got a knife and fork. Then she vanished. After 5 minutes of staring at our food I got up, walked over to the server station and asked for plates and napkins and pepper. Our waiter brought them a few minutes later with a lame " my bad" apology. About 20 minutes later we got the sashimi. We ordered clam chowder - very smooth and creamy but had large pieces of focaccia bread immersed that could not be cut or captured by the plastic won ton soup spoon we were given. I used a knife when I finally got one. The Caesar salad reminded me of the ones you can buy from Costco in already packed containers - 4 to a pack. The Korean spiced chicken wings were below average by Wingstop standards. The Szechwan style green beans were the best. The sauce was very good and a bit spicy. The sashimi was fresh but not enough wasabi or ginger and waiting for more was no longer an option. We just wanted to leave at that point and skipped dessert. We understand that a lot of places are short staffed these days. We made a reservation. Showed up on time and expected much better than we got. Experiences like this make me not want to bother with eating out. Part of the expense is the pleasure of being waited on and treated well. We got better service at Ippy's (a counter order comfort food type restaurant) the night before and paid 1/3 what we paid at Copper Bar. read more

This was the worst dining experience of our week on the Big Island. Is the food overpriced? Yes, but that's to be expected at a world-class resort. The dismal customer service was the deal-breaker for us. Our waiter was unhelpful and inattentive. He made exactly one stop other than the taking of our order, and even then he didn't refill our empty drinks. It wasn't because the restaurant was busy. We observed him leaning against the wall busy on his phone rather than making the rounds among his tables. While ordering, I asked him what the mashed potatoes were seasoned with, as I have food allergies. He hemmed and hawed for a moment, clearly unsure of the answer, so I asked if he could ask the kitchen. He declined to check with the kitchen, instead stating that it was just potato, with nothing on it. When my side of potatoes arrived, they were clearly blended throughout with mystery green seasonings, and topped with butter, leaving me with an expensive side dish I couldn't eat. We couldn't even find him in order to pay our bill. Disappointing. read more

We made the mistake or ordering our drinks and two appetizers before our actual meal, which meant that we didn't have another opportunity to order our meal for about an hour. We were staying at the Hapuna Westin and wanted to give the Copper Bar a try despite seeing a few negative reviews. The free inter hotel shuttle got us there and back fast. The outdoor space is grand and majestic. The chairs are super comfortable. We had the KFC (cauliflower), wings, butter lettuce salad and the flatbread pizza. Everything was good. KFC and salad were great. As good as the food was, the highlight were the cocktails. The Mona Kea Barrel Bonfire and Twilight Skies were both exceptional and unique. Service was great. The live entertainment played classic Hawaiian music songs with a nice dancer. The final pleasant surprise was the fairly priced bill. read more

We've found dishes that are reliably consistent and tasty, and the bar has learned how to prepare Mauna Kea's traditional drink offerings. My husband ordered a spicy tuna roll, and it was inedible. The fish was mushy and flavorless. Nori was rubbery. I got the chicken wings, and they were undercooked. My friend ordered a hamburger with saltless fries, and the fries came out cold and covered with salt. He asked for another order, and they came out cold again, just with less salt. The hostess could do a better job of hospitality and upselling. We ask for a table, and she said it was going to be a 15 minute wait. She did not encourage us to go to the bar and order a drink, nor did she suggested we wait at the lounge areas within the dining room that don't need reservations. We were disappointed! We thought we'd get outside seating but even with a long-standing reservation we were put at a table near the bar area where is was more like communal seating rather than a romantic Hawaiian evening. The atmosphere was a combination of a local rotary meeting on the outer deck; a guitarist and hula dancer on the outside deck and two large screened TV's airing the NBA game and ESPN NFL news. Service was slow and the staff was confused-delivering meals and drinks to the wrong tables. Either understaffed or no training. The young staff were trying their best and very friendly but some of the old-timers weren't happy about things and their complaining added to the overall bad experience. The food was a combination of bar food ( fried chicken tender sliders) and Asian Fusion (Fish of the Day Dish). Bill with drinks and small plate came to about $100 which included tip. This is Hawaii so the bill was not surprising but for being one of the premier resorts on the Big Island Mauna Kea needs to get their act together. read more
