This place is convenient and is open after 9pm. Service is good. The food is just OK but priced high for the lack of flavor and taste. This is our second time here. The first time my wife ordered the mushroom pizza which was good and I had the fried chicken sliders which were appetizing. The second night my wife ordered the $18 wings (6 pieces) which were fine but you can't really mess up on fried wings where the sauce is on the side. I ordered the pupu steak frites which was a waste of $25. The steak was cold, chewy, and without flavor. The fries that came with the dish was the best item on the plate. read more

The manager at this restaurant, Dave or David is horrible. He made our dining experience on our last day worse than it had to be. Everything about this location is way off, from extremely slow and unreliable service to unnecessarily high cocktail prices ($19+) that were far below average. Example: my first cocktail took 45 to receive. It was so bad that I had to send it back. 1 hour into waiting (total time), I located the manager to cancel my order. The sunsets are great from this location, this is quite true, but the service and offerings are not worth your money or time. read more

My wife and I stayed at the Mauna Kea for our honeymoon and of all the places we ventured for food and drinks, the Copper Bar was our favorite. It has a wonderful private ambiance without being completely secluded. The new upgrades, furniture and staff are all wonderful. The food is light and drinks were tasty! read more

We had heard about their new drink program so decided to travel over from our hotel to check out Copper Bar. It was true, we really enjoyed their cocktails. I had the smoky "barrel bonfire" (ok, I had several) and wife had their signature mule. Both drinks were excellent - the drinks and friendly bar staff are the only reason I am not giving 1 star. However it was by far the most disappointing food on our entire trip, possibly including the airplane food on the way. The Calamari appetizer was under-seasoned and utterly forgettable. Waitress highly recommended their "famous" sunset roll and my wife didn't finish it. It was so drowning in sauces that you couldn't taste the fish at all. My shrimp Yaki Udon was also swimming and the shrimp were overcooked. Noodles themselves weren't bad though - good texture. Bar staff was great, table service was mediocre (slow). The pho was the worst pho I have ever had. And I LOVE pho. They served it with not enough broth to even cover noodles. So the noodles would not cook. I asked for more broth and they did bring it out. Still was not enough to even begin to cook noodles. I think they added uncooked noodles to it. The broth taste like you were drinking Luke warm, LOTS OF salt, dipped in old gym socks. The sushi made my mom sic all night. I asked if it was farmed salmon and they said it was not. But it was farmed salmon. They color is way different than wild caught salmon. I live in Alaska and know the difference. The location is awesome and the staff were great. The food was just horrible. Which is kinda a big deal if you a restaurant. Instead of one star, they get 2 for the views. Second time I've been here in one year. This place is just not improving. I don't get it. Very expensive but the food sucks. We ordered the BLT to split, broccoli appetizer, and Portuguese soup. The BLT cost $24. The lettuce was wilted and the bacon was salty and tough as shoe leather. This $24 sandwich came on a small bun which fell apart. Their appetizer choices are not great but we tried the broccoli which should have been prepared with garlic and chili sauce. Basically it was steamed with no seasoning. The soup was good and my Pina Colada was okay. Please fix these issues, the views are breathtaking and the hotel is beautiful. read more

We ended up eating here last minute and the food was decent. However it was clear that our server was not trained on how to deal with food allergies. Did not make me feel comfortable in any way and chuckled after I asked if my entree would be okay considering my allergies. The server is the line of defense between a patron and their allergy food. Food ok...service was ABYSMAL. INEXCUSABLE at a hotel charging $900/night for a room to have a restaurant so understaffed, untrained, and NO table bussers. Appetizer dishes sat on the table for over 30 min while we waited (and waited...and waited...) for our entrees. Food was OK, not memorable but reasonably good. Mauna Kea really needs to get it in gear, we spend a LOT to be here, even AVERAGE service would have been an improvement. read more

Gawd, I really want to love this place... and I have, before the change a couple of years ago. We have eaten here more than a dozen times in the past couple of years, we keep saying it has to get better... but it just does not. First I would like to say we are local people and enjoy the hotel and its restaurants and its beaches a lot. Tonight, 4th of July, we took three guest from Germany to the Copper Bar for dinner before the fireworks (which are always amazing) . The service in the Copper Bar was dismal. Only one menu for a table of five, because they did not have enough menus, keep in mind that the menus here are copied pages on a clipboard, so, you cant photo copy more menus? Then water was served in plastic cups, because, as the waiter said, we have had over a thousand people here tonight, and we can't keep up. It is 4th of July you get that many guest every year on the 4th of July. Do the managers forget that? The food was good as usual, but the service, its all about the service and it just I hate to say this word but it just s^$ks. Its not the wait staffs fault. Even I can see that the management is throwing the staff under the bus here. Come on you have a beautiful venue that could produce a huge revenue steam if you could only improve on the commitment to the guests. Mahalo. read more

I was wary after reading the reviews. My 80 year old parents live here on the Big Island part time, my dad suggested it and he has great taste. So glad we went! Used yelp reservations earlier in the day and although we were late our table was waiting. The hotel is gorgeous and elegant. I've traveled all over the world and the Mauna Kea exudes sophistication and class without being pretentious. Copper Bar continued this classic atmosphere. There was a guy playing lovely Hawaiian music on his guitar and one gal doing hula. Subtle and classy. In the background adding ambiance not at all distracting. We could still easily talk. The sound of the waves added to the scene making you feel relaxed and definitely in Hawaii. The food, however was my concern. But it didn't disappoint. Mom and I started with mai tais. Dad had wine. They did not skimp on the booze! A good sized pour and my mai tai had plenty of rum. We had the Marguerita flatbread which although really a pizza was excellent. I also ordered the palm salad. Great flavor and a surprisingly good size. Then my folks each ordered the fish special which was Ono. They enjoyed it although both agreed it was slightly over cooked. I had the beef rib ravioli with a mushroom cream sauce. Loved every bite. Although we had skipped lunch it was plenty of food. We didn't need dessert, just a cup of Kona coffee to top it off. Our waiter was okay. Didn't have the Hawaiian friendliness I'm used to but certainly not a bad attitude. He was busy. Heck, maybe he wasn't having a great day. Who knows. After dinner we took a walk around the hotel and down to the water view area. When I was a kid there used to be rays you could see swimming. No such luck now. One thing to note, the Mauna Kea is a top resort and the prices reflect that. It was $150 pre tip. read more

We recently dined at the Copper Bar. We had 7:00 pm reservations and arrived at 6:53. When we arrived at the hostess stand, hostess Sharon very rudely told us to leave and come back in seven minutes; don't wait by near the stand. We asked if we could wait in the bar and she curtly told us there was no room. Possibly, but she also didn't turn around and take a look. She was also rude to the couple just before us so it wasn't just us. For our meal, we had the Roasted Beet Salad (very good), Hearts of Palm Salad ( good but lots of greens and light on the hearts of palm), Margherita Flatbread (not great...very tough), fish tacos (a special...just so-so), Salmon Sashimi (delicious) and a sushi roll I can't recall) also very good. We returned several days later to sit in the bar for a bit before heading to the Hau Tree for dinner. As luck would have it, rude Sharon was at the hostess stand...still rude. Again curtly telling us there was no room at the bar....without turning her head to look. I noticed several empty chairs in the bar so not sure why she told us there was no room. We had reservations to dine there a second night but cancelled. I can do without someone in the hospitality industry being incredibly rude...twice. If the food had been outstanding, we could have over-looked rude Sharon but with the exception of the sushi, it wasn't worth dealing with Sharon again. read more

The atmosphere is good. Our table was dirty. The sushi was really good. But it went downhill from there... the ribeye was terrible. Our waiter barely paid any attention to us. Our meal was one hour and forty-five minutes. We saw our waiter four times in total. That includes when he dropped the bill off. We had to stop him as he rushed by our table to order another drink. Just terrible service. Overall, the food was just not great (except the sushi). The view is beautiful and the live music was great. Not a huge fan of hotel restaurants generally but this casual bar and dining spot in the Mauna Kea hotel is pretty great. Reasonably priced (for a Hawaii hotel), amazing views and ambiance and a kid friendly menu combine to be a big hit with our entire family. The service is excellent, the wine list is solid and the menu is diverse enough to please everyone. And the view is second to none. Thumbs up. read more

First, can it get much better than this when the setting sun lights up the red sky before it plunges into the ocean? Remodeled and renamed in 11/2015 and now called Copper Bar. Amazing views, great decor and awesome food. Had the best fish dish there over xmas holidays. Chef Rio Miceli has created an amazing masterpiece with his wasabi bok choy reduction/ sauce over perfectly done mahi mahi. Our family endulges in seafood frequently and this was the best mahi we have ever had. Our party also enjoyed delicious Hamakua mushroom flat bread, excellent Kona shrimp Pad Thai noodles, and a steak appetizer with shoe-string fries. Overall, this was one of our most enjoyable experiences on the Island, and we can hardly wait for our next trip to see what other awesome creations Chef Rio will have in store for us. read more

This place failed to meet expectations. I had read this place listed as a favorite in many reviews however I found the menu very limited and more sushi focused than anything else. I like sushi, however I was craving something else that night. When I heard Copper Pig, I'd assume there would be other meats offered (such as pork), but no. Service was wonderful and friendly. We visited this restaurant for the ambience/ location, which will not disappoint. Built in 1960s industrial style classic architecture, remodeled last year. We were delightfully surprised with food and beverages! Kung pao ahi, cumin mac nuts, and homemade ginger beer were highlights. Sad to give a 1 star but kind of well deserved from ordering sushi, asked if it had mayo on it he said no shows up with it! They did not bring soy or chop sticks had to ask - Ordered dessert ( ice cream) again had to ask for a spoon! Had to ask for a 2nd drink ( never showed up) brought my bill while eating and then hands me another bill with my second drink. My biggest pet peeve is bad service especially when your paying top prices - asked to order or call us a taxi - sat and waited now maybe this is not the rest. Fault but waited 1.5 hours with a 4 & 5 year old.... The hotel staff after asking numerous times to assist didn't give bother to do a thing.... 40 years of memories going there finished!
