I've only eaten here a couple times and had brisket each time. For me to order this multiple times, it's pretty darn good.

My wife and I just finished our second dining experience here and the consistency is excellent in terms of food, quality, value, and service. The ambiance and friendly staff make for a very welcoming, comfortable, relaxing, and enjoyable experience. In addition to seating in the main dining room and bar areas you can also opt to sit out front on their patio or enjoy a more secluded spot on their very cool and recently opened back deck complete with music, cushioned wicker furniture and a fire pit. The Copper Barrel is still somewhat of a newcomer at just three years old and as such, still somewhat off peoples radar we suspect evidenced by the fact that we arrived around 5 PM during the week during our last two visits and didn't have to wait for a table. Not sure how busy they are on the weekends but as two people who dine out regularly, I can promise you that once more people find out about this somewhat hidden gem, reservations will likely become necessary to avoid waiting. Not that you would mind waiting at the bar in this open concept and very tastefully decorated dining room and bar area featuring a well-balanced use of stone, wood, and metal all illuminated by my favorite Edison light bulbs. The kitchen staff is solid as evidenced by their creative use of locally sourced quality ingredients. The flavors our distinctive and pronounced without being overpowering. They're not afraid to have fun and take risks. Tonight, for example they featured a Cream of Jalapeno Pepper soup that our server said she absolutely loved - too bad for my acid reflux because that is something I would love to try. They also had deep fried Deviled Eggs; have you ever heard of such a thing - we hadn't? Of course, we tried them, and they were tasty: Lightly breaded with a touch of crunch with a hint of mustard and a touch of paprika. We enjoy sharing with one another and their Figs & Honey, Smoked Bacon Wrapped Asparagus, and Charcuterie boards are all excellent choices from their Small Plates and Shareables menu. Their Smokehouse menu is a real highlight featuring many excellent choices. The best part is that although slow smoked, the meats are not too smokey tasting as can often be the case at other establishments. Their ribs are meaty and falling off the bone with an excellent dry rub complimented by a delicious homemade BBQ sauce - not too sweet or tart, just right. The turkey comes with a homemade cranberry sauce which is just as delicious as their BBQ sauce. My wife very much enjoyed her Chicken Kabobs, especially the lemon pepper sauce that came with it. And although their steaks are not prime cuts, they are still tender and juicy and perfectly trimmed on site, we both enjoyed are nicely charred filets during our last visit. As I said, the kitchen staff definitely knows what they're doing. As great as the ambiance and kitchen staff are, the service staff also deserves recognition. Energetic, enthusiastic, and attentive without being overbearing or annoying - a difficult balance to achieve if you think about it. A fun fact is that the servers are responsible for preparing their delicious cornbread muffins each day - how fun is that. We had Sarah C tonight and she takes great pride in her version of the restaurant staple as evidenced by her shirt which says right on the back "Cornbread Queen." Sarah's cornbread was excellent but so were the young lady's who made them the last time we were here. No kidding, the servers must take this tongue-in-cheek competition pretty serious because these darn things are addictive, perfectly moist and flavorful with a firm outside - just the way I like them and just the way they're supposed to be. In case you cannot tell from this review we just love it here and look forward to becoming regulars. If you're looking for a truly excellent restaurant and don't mind an easy drive to Hampshire, IL then we couldn't encourage you more to come try this gem for yourself. We drove from the Greater Rockford area and look forward to doing so on a regular basis in the future, it is that great of an experience with some of the most affordable prices you can imagine - a truly excellent value! read more

Finally decided to try this place.. I ordered the brisket and I personally wasn't a fan! The brisket had no flavor. The bbq sauce just tastes like ketchup & brown sugar, nothing special! The whole food presentation wasn't anything to brag about. It wasn't worth $16.00 For the food taking about an hour to get. I was really expecting the best. Came here for dinner after visiting Goebbert's for their fall festival. This restaurant was a total surprise. The food was delicious. It all seemed made to order and not pre-made frozen crap. I had a nice blonde ale beer and it was local. My have had a cocktail and she said it was good. My son said he lived his burger. I wish I was local because I would definitely frequent it. We use to love the Copper Barrel and have ordered from them a lot. However, tonight's experience was not the best. The communication over the phone for the order was a little frustrating and for some reason, she was having a hard time comprehending everything I said. They forgot one of my soups (both were on the receipt), and for some reason, it was a hassle to just get me that one cup of soup. We got home, and they gave us a side of BBQ sauce but didn't put any on the sandwich. What is going on? Just a bad day or what?! We came here for the lunch with Santa and the entire experience was awesome! Easy parking, cool looking space, amazing service, and above all the food was on point! We felt like we where in Chicago! WOW! Not sure why this place has escaped my radar, but "better late than never". The food is exceptional. I had honey walleye. It was beautifully displayed and tasted even better. Spinach and feta for a side? We couldn't possibly be in Hampshire, IL, could we? My friend had chicken kabobs which were cooked perfectly. The service was attentive and speedy. The owner came up to us and thanked us for stopping by...and not in a bothersome, "please go away" kind of manner. Just a heartfelt thanks, and away she went. I wondered if I was on candid camera. Really good, fresh food. The bacon-wrapped asparagus, roasted jalapenos, and sliders are awesome appetizers. All of the meats (brisket, ribs, pork, chicken and turkey) are done on site and as good as you will get anywhere. The restaurant Hampshire needed for a long time. read more

First and last time here. A little over priced, but that goes with any new establishment. Jerk chicken tacos weren't jerky enough, brisket lacked kick, and rib meat was not falling off the bone. Went here for dinner Friday night. We were seated right away. Staff was warm and friendly. Our waiter had a waitress in training. Both were extremely friendly and welcoming. They were attentive, let us know about the specials. The drinks, appetizer and main meal flowed in a timely fashion. Just slow enough to allow for conversation but fast enough I didn't go hungry. My family really likes Copper Barrel. We have been here twice and enjoyed excellent service from both servers. The first visit was on a Friday night and the second on a Saturday night. There was a lively crowd at the full tables and in the full bar seats. The owner stopped at our table both times to chat, check on how we liked our meals and answer any questions we had about the menu. Good business move! Didn't know much about Copper Barrel when we stopped in for dinner on a Friday night. What a great surprise! The meal and the service were excellent. Started off with bacon-wrapped asparagus which was awesome. At our table, we had a variety of dishes which were all great. I got the baby back ribs. The meat practically fell off the bones. Brisket tacos were fantastic with onion straws sprinkled on top. The salmon was cooked perfectly. And if you love cornbread, you'll be happy to know that it is a standard side with an entree. They even have a cornbread dessert. Our server, Macy, was very friendly and did a great job of taking care of us. I'm looking forward to another visit. read more

Popped in here ahead of a family event and was pleasantly surprised at the menu selections. Tried both the fish and shrimp tacos and they were delicious. My husband had the brisket with cornbread and said it was also quite good and filling. Extra bonus we happened to visit on a Thursday and it was half-price on bottles of wine. Seats at the bar were super comfy (and well-spaced which is a thing of mine, I *hate* being cramped) and the service was friendly and attentive. This location is a bit out of the way for my everyday patronage but when I'm back in the area I'd definitely visit again. read more
