Saturday's are great patio days. Sunny views on the waterfront at the Rio had us famished and we decided to mix things up with some cornbread and heavier fare. I have to say, though busy, the service didn't miss a beat. Jenn - our server - was attentive/kind and fun. I got the filet mignon with the compound butter and my homie got some BBRibs to complement the aforementioned cornbread. The food came out fast and we got to eating. As always with every time I've been here, it slapped. Sides were solid, the steak was cooked to perfection and them ribs were disappearing off the plate! Good times. We followed up our entrees with a solid - and I mean solid - bread pudding. Jeez, this thing is decadent, but we got after it. Jenn brought us a scoop of ice cream and we went to town! Delicious. If you've got a sweet tooth, do yourself a favor and grab the Bread Pudding. It was soft, pillowy, but sweet (not overly sweet) and filling. What a cool, fun place to dine. Cooper Canyon offers a varied array of dishes in a comfortable and open dining environment. Ava took care of us and she was simply amazing from her demeanor and kindness to her stellar recommendations. We began with their extremely fresh spinach dip that included salsa and sour cream. My girlfriend ordered the massive, warm, and yummy cornbread skillet as well as their Fiesta Eggrolls. I am not an eggroll fan but these were the best I have ever had. Absolutely fresh, flavorful, and delicious. I had the rainbow trout with spinach and mashed potatoes. The fish was fresh, light, and tasty. The trout itself was a very generous portion. For dessert, we dove into their Chocolate Uprising: Sort of like a ice cream sandwich on steroids with heavy cream and a chocolate and caramel base. It was fantastic and insane and we just couldn't finish it! I cannot remember having caramel that good (not sweet but rich). The staff is excellent. They work so well in concert from running food to clearing dishes. The bartenders are outstanding. Location and parking is great, right off the water and they have indoor, semi outdoor, and "boathouse" seating! As a vegetarian I feel like they did not have that many options which was disappointing - and the ones that they do, I feel are over priced. Very average food- you're paying for the view not necessarily quality of food. Service was good, our server was sweet but food took a while to get out. It's alright, but would check out other places before here- but the drinks were fabulous! So maybe apps and drinks by the water during sunset?! read more

She asked if there were allergies and not just because as I ordered things that didn't have it listed on the menu to what I was allergic to but she asked in the kitchen and bar area! For that she gets 5 stars! I can't tell you how many places I've been and yet they ask but not follow through! The good was great, the service was even better! I couldn't eat my salad as it was HUGE! I am a frequent patron, and had dinner last week. The location is close to the interstate, very serene and lovely, as it sits on a boardwalk on a lake, with a nice view. There's free parking in several parking lots within a couple blocks. I love that the restaurant has areas one can sit, and not be too loud, to be able to hold a conversation. There's music, but not blaring, especially if one does not sit near the speakers. They have a large bar area that is lively, especially on weekends. They even have a small private room for special occasions or corporate events. There are several locations in the DMV, however, I really like this location best. I feel they take much more pride in their food and service here. My visit was absolutely wonderful, from the front of the house, and all through the service. My server, Ava L., was genuinely friendly, helpful with selections, attentive, and the food came out expediently. Ask for Ava, as she treats a customer with joyful hospitality? Kudos to her. ENTREE Selection: Smoked salmon, ( I asked for it to be cooked blackened), was cooked to perfection, and nicely flaky and delicious, served with very tasty sides of steamed spinach with a hint of garlic and flavorful mashed potatoes. The only suggestion to the chef, to please make sure the potatoes are hot, like the rest of the plated food. I had to place my steaming fish on top of the potatoes to warm it up, a lot more to enjoy. One of my other favorite entrees are: grilled brazino, rockfish (as specials), or trout, when they do not run out, as sometimes they do. Their fried cod fish & chips is a delight too, when they might have it as a special. They have rotating menu selections with specials every week, in addition to what is on the menu, which is refreshing. Oh yes, and don't skip on the bbq ribs, if that is your desire, tender as mother's love! DESSERT: The chef made a special dessert for the week, in addition to selections on the menu, which was the most fabulously sinful strawberry shortcake ever, light and fluffy, served with a special whipped cream. It was the best dessert they have ever served here, even though, their special cheesecakes are pretty good too, when they have them. The special desserts rotating are much better than the regular desserts on their menu. The bread pudding, for example a regular on the menu, is not bad, but could be much improved, too thick/heavy and needs a little more spice, and a better sauce, like bread pudding served in Charleston, SC. or New Orleans, for example, where it is known for. BEVERAGE: Try one of the special concoctions requests from the talented bar tenders. They make great specialty cocktails, or girly fruity drinks with alcohol or virgin. We came for Sunday lunch and had the Ahi Tuna Tacos appetizer (3), Grilled Rainbow Trout, and Coconut Shrimp Roll. The tuna tacos were nice in a small crunchy shell with a slice of avocado and a spicy mayo, but not too hot. The coconut shrimp roll was good. I was pleasantly surprised how good light, fresh tasting, and non-fishy the Rainbow Trout was. It came in a light, white cream sauce with spinach and mashed potatoes. We were set on going to another place but the wait was over an hour and we gave Copper Canyon a try. We were able to get seating in the area that is in the lake. Very nice. Staff was great, took care of our needs and were professional. Oscar was our server. The food came out fairly fast. Presented well. I had the burger and my wife had the turkey burger. My burger was a bit on the rare side but frankly I like it that way and my wife really liked her turkey burger. The shoe string fries were great. No complaints. read more

Representing 2019 in DMV runner-up in alphabet series, C is for Copper Canyon Grill. I had been to the RIO location twice, both in 2019. I first tried at Silver Spring on a date in July 2018. In fact, that was one of the dates where we went to Kung Fu Tea after dinner (see my 3-star review I just wrote of them). I was impressed with that location. So, in March 2019, I was happy my friend had his birthday party there. The same friend who went to BJ's Restaurant in Frederick (my last review I just wrote: see my 3-stars of them) also joined me for a movie & for the birthday party. She swayed me to get Prime Rib. And she was right! One of the best prime ribs out there. Ultimately, she became a girlfriend, and early on in that relationship, she really wanted to go back to Copper Canyon, and after a movie at RIO, we went again. Service was very good, and we enjoyed prime rib again. Prime rib comes with green beans & mashed potatoes, which are great too, but the real star is the prime rib itself. Interestingly, my girlfriend of that time ate the prime rib by herself on Friday, March 13, 2020. She joined me for 1 movie, I joined my friend for 2 movies, & he went to 3 movies on that Friday. He was understandably concerned the movie theaters were shutting down any day for Covid, and he wanted to get his AMC A-List 3 movies in for the week of March 13-19, 2020 and not break his 90+ week streak he had going of always getting his 3 movies in since he joined A-List. My friend & I had dinner at BGR before my 1st movie & his 2nd movie, which went out of business unfortunately, but BGR in Columbia is still there. Like my friend panicking about getting his 3 movies in, my girlfriend was being pragmatic saying I won't be able to have prime rib for a while as restaurants will shutdown for Covid. I was a bit jealous even though BGR was good; let's be honest Copper Canyon prime rib is even better! In December 2025, my girlfriend wanted to try Copper Canyon for her birthday since I had mentioned the place several times (including times I went with my ex). I realized there's one by Arundel Mills, which was great as I didn't want to schlep from my home to Largo, Silver Spring, or Gaithersburg in order of distance, none of which are close to my home today, which is only about 8 miles from Arundel Mills. That new location is my new favorite, but this one is a close 2nd place. read more

I have gone to Copper Canyon Grill for more than 10 years now. I am usually not a big fan of sitting at a restaurant or eating non-Asian cuisines. BUT, this particular restaurant holds a special place in my book because of consistently excellent service and food quality. My whole family has enjoyed coming to Copper Canyon Grill for all kinds of occasions over the years-- birthdays, get together with friends, first dates, family dinner outings just to name a few. The "Stanford" cheeseburger, chicken pot pie, rattlesnake pasta, rotisserie chicken, chocolate uprising, and key lime pies are some of my favorite things I have ordered there over the years. No matter what day of the week we visit, we have always received exceptional service and wonderfully plated food. The servers are exceptionally well trained and observant especially at this location. For example, I once decided to be "adventurous" and ordered something I usually don't -- a meatloaf of all things. I didn't really care for the taste or the texture of it. And the server quickly became aware of me not eating much of it or looking particularly thrilled with it. She approached me and asked me if I wanted to order something else without me even thinking about asking such a thing. It didn't even occur to me to speak up because I figured it's my fault for ordering it. She was just so gracious about it and I felt so grateful. That's was one of many many great examples of why it's great dining at Copper Canyon Grill. I go out to eat a lot, but many places fails to match their keen sense of being observant, anticipating diner needs, and offering to make things great. They will go out of their way to ensure each diners are absolutely satisfied and happy before leaving. The truly incredible thing about it is that they have consistently upheld that standard for more than 10 years!!! And have you seen the menu prices?! It's crazy how reasonably everything is priced compared to all those stuffy snooty buzzy newer restaurants out there!!! Consequently, whenever I return from out of state, one of many places I go out of my way to visit is Copper Canyon Grill. I don't care how little time or out of my way it is to dine there at times. The food is always delicious! It's always worth the price. The service sometimes is hit or miss. Some visit the servers are lovely and really engaged and then other times they will come by once and that's it. This visit our server wasn't very warming and came to check on us once. The ribs always come with a warm towel to clean your hands at the end but it was brought out with our plate... which made no sense because by the time we finished the ribs the towels were cold. Previously we have gotten the towels at the end of the meal to clean our hands. The restaurant itself is beautiful and a very nice date night vibe. read more

After a fishing trip in Vermont and being told by the guide that I had to throw the rainbow trout back into the water, I really wanted some trout. Lo and behold, Copper Canyon had it on their menu. It was simply lovely. It was satisfying. The red mashed potatoes had a lot of flavor. It's creaminess contained not just potatoes but garlic and onions too. Wonderful service. I've been here quite a few times over the years and the service has always been good, but the food is hit or miss. The last two times I've gone I've been really disappointed in the quality of the food and honestly was not able to finish my food both times. Some things they do really well, but some of the dishes are just really inedible. I got the rattlesnake pasta my last visit and the mushrooms were completely raw, the chicken had these hard chewy pieces in them, and the pasta was way over cooked. My husband got the pot pie and really enjoyed it and I've had the mac and cheese in the past and enjoyed it. I'll probably come back and just be more careful on what I order, but it's not a place I think about going back to, it's more of just convenience when we're in the area. Sunday 4/13/25 Whenever I visit Rio, I always see this spot, but I can't remember ever making a visit. That all changed today as my mom decided to have her 52nd birthday here. She made a reservation for 7:30 pm with me and my brother, and luckily it wasn't necessary as it was relatively light around that time. Our waiter was Brandon, and he provided us with great service, so shoutout to Brandon. Also, there's a nice view of the lake from where we sat, which adds to the ambiance. As a table, we got many different dishes, but the items I had/ tried were the calamari fritti FREE, fiesta egg rolls $17, iron skillet cornbread $10, rattlesnake pasta $23.50, and the bread pudding $14. I also tried a rib from my brother's main dish. - The calamari fritti was alright, and fortunately, my mom was able to get it complimentary (props to the service). - The Fiesta egg rolls were my favorite appetizer. It was decent. - The iron skillet cornbread was fine. - The rattlesnake pasta was my main dish, and I opted to remove the mushrooms for spinach. The dish was okay, but I wasn't impressed. - The bread pudding was alright, but it really could've benefited from the addition of ice cream or even a sauce that was richer & sweeter. - The rib I tried was alright: the ribs are tender, and the sauce is the main flavor you get from it, as you don't taste any seasoning. This place makes an underrated steak. I wanted a steak and luckily they had a 20 oz bone in ribeye special. It was about as good as I could have hoped. Extremely tender, flavorful, and a nice size. The mash potatoes were great too. I've had ribeyes from a lot of places and I would say this holds its own against even fancier steak houses. Disorganized Service, Underwhelming Experience Not sure what happened at Copper Canyon Grill, but our visit was frustrating. We started with two people around 7:45pm, and everything seemed fine. About an hour later, two more friends joined us--and that's when the long wait began. We added just a few items: a burger, a dozen oysters, a beer, and a salmon. Even for something as simple as oysters and a beer, we had to ask three times, and it still took nearly an hour for them to arrive. The food itself was nothing special--oysters were good, but the rest was just average. With food and 4 bottles of wine, our check is close to $600! The service definitely needs work, especially with timing and follow-up. Cozy spot with solid portions and surprisingly good crab cakes. This place has a nice, cozy vibe that makes the whole dining experience feel comfortable and relaxed. Went with a group and we basically ordered half the menu. Started with the calamari that came with house-made marinara, and it was a solid start to the meal. For mains, we tried the crab cake sandwich, rattlesnake pasta, BBQ pork ribs, prime rib, smoked Atlantic salmon, and "The Stanford" cheeseburger. The standouts were definitely the crab cake and the prime rib. The rattlesnake pasta had a nice kick with the cajun alfredo, and the ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender. Everything we ordered had decent portion sizes, so you're definitely getting your money's worth here. For the quality and amount of food you're getting, the value is solid. A good experience at this Copper Canyon Grill at the Rio. The overall concept is upscale American food. A step above the familiar American chain sit-down restaurants. The customer service was good and the dining room was very quiet. On the day I visited, the customer food traffic was very light. In fact, there were only a few patrons dining in. Their food menu is limited, however, the options make sense and their execution and plating is good. All of the food I ordered was delicious. There is also seating outdoors, however, I appreciate the multiple seating styles in the dining room, including family-style booth seating, two-seaters, and bench seating. Initially the restaurant couldn't find the reservation. Nina showed up and cleared it up by showing the confirmation message on her phone. So we waited maybe 20 minutes. Saturday night the place is very busy. Finally we get a small booth close to the door. It was a chilly night so that part of the restaurant was on the cool side. She put her jacket on. Ok, we have a seat and menus. I worked all day so I felt like and ordered a Yuengling. Water was also delivered to the table. The menu is pretty extensive. Lots of good choices but I finally decided on the rotisserie chicken and she decided on the grilled rainbow trout. The beer arrives and it's cold and tasty. The food arrives pretty quick, I'd say 15 minutes. The chicken smells divine and her trout looks very tasty. The chicken is perfectly cooked and mashed potatoes are lump free and very tasty. Her trout is perfectly cooked and will require a box. It's a generous piece of fish. After a while we're out in the chilly breezy weather. I would go back again. Super disappointing use of my funds. We have been thinking bout trying this place for awhile and finally did and wish we hadn't. Nothing was bad (other than the attitude of the hostesses), but nothing was good either. The spinach artichoke dip reminded me of tasting my horse's alfalfa when I was a child. No garlic or anything acidic. I think the cheese was swiss, because it tasted like socks instead of parmesan. The bacon mac and cheese had my favorite style of pasta in it (cavatappi), but the sauce tasted of little more than way too much black pepper. The roma pepperoni flatbread was the only thing we tried with any real potential. The tomatoes, arugula, and parmesan were great. Somehow, we could not taste the pepperoni at all. We could see it. It was there. It just tasted of nothing. The vibe here reminded me of places I've worked at with very toxic management. The employees were all doing their job and being polite, but they each seemed miserable from the hostesses to the server to the person who looked like a manager who kept looking out into our seating area as if someone had done something wrong and he was going to go get on them about it. We will definitely not be going back, which is disappointing, because this place is in a beautiful location within walking distance of my apartment. But no thanks. I had the Cloak and Dagger special which is essentially a roast beef and ham French dip sandwich that was piled high with meat, spicy mustard, and matchstick fries. The au jus was a little bland for my taste and I'm not a fan of matchstick fries. I like my fries bigger but that's just me. My bride had a flatbread that was delicious as well. Copper Canyon is a great spot for dinner. I haven't been here for lunch, so I'd like to try it one day. With a traditional American menu, you can never go wrong. I've tried a variety of the items: their burgers, ribs, steak and fish of the day plates. Each time, I was always pleased with the service, quality of food and experience. This most recent visit was prompted by their ramen special. My family received an email from Blueridge restaurants that they had their streak ramen for one week only (they do this maybe once or twice a year). We came during a late evening to enjoy the rare soup. Unfortunately our waiter informed us it was only a lunch option. We were utterly disappointed as it wasn't outlined in the email that it was restricted to lunch and in the past we had gotten it for dinner. However, another waiter, Gary (who ended up taking over serving our table), was able to work it out with the kitchen so that we could fulfill our ramen craving. The ramen itself was yummy. The toppings it comes with are all premixed so there are no substitutions or adjustments that can be made. I'm not a fan of mushrooms, so I just had to pick them out. There were a ton of mushrooms and I felt that it was almost half of the soup. Nonetheless, I think the portion size was good- not too much and not too little. For a place that doesn't normally serve ramen, I was pleased. Like any other visit to Copper Canyon, we had to end the night with bread pudding. Because we were full from our ramen, one serving was enough for the 4 of us. When ordering the bread pudding, my recommendation is to request a side of extra sauce because the inside can be a bit dry sometimes. Overall, I'm always pleased with my visits to this Copper Canyon. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the area and this location is the best one! I went here with a friend tonight to celebrate her first day at her new job. Our server, Emmanuel was amazing! He heard about her new job and brought her chicken pot pie with a candle in it. The food is always good and the staff are the nicest people. Well definitely be back soon! read more

Whenever I'm disappointed, I take some time to mull over the reasons and consider any bias I may be having. This happened several weeks ago and my feelings haven't changed. Here goes. Copper Canyon is one of my favorite restaurants. In this case, however, they ruined an evening. I ordered my favorite Ahi tuna salad. The price was the same as always, however when it arrived, the tuna looked like a much smaller quantity than previous times I'd ordered the dish. (I've had this fave many times, and at other CC restaurants, and it has always been excellent.) The manager stopped by a while later and asked "Is there something I can do to make your evening extraordinary?" I hesitated but finally mentioned that in past visits, the tuna seemed more generous. I shared that I'm a big fan of CC, and have had this dish many times. She offered that "Perhaps the slices are thicker!" I said that didn't appear to be the case, and reaffirmed that I've had it a number of times. I then mentioned I'm not naive to pricing pressures, but cutting back on the serving size rather than raising the price a bit seemed contrary to making my evening extraordinary. The manager then offered to "ask the kitchen if they could offer a bit more sushi, and don't tell anyone, and I don't know if they can do that, but I'll ask, and it would only be a one time thing." That had the makings of an extraordinary evening. A few minutes later, she brought a small plate of sliced Ahi tuna. The manager said "This is a one time thing - don't mention it to anyone." I was pleased and the tuna was excellent. When I received the bill, it said "1 Add Ahi Tuna $16.00." I was shocked, as it was very clear that this was intended to be gratis, as a nod to creating an "extraordinary" dining experience. And to be honest, I was a little angry but thought I'd mull it over to see if it looked different to me after some time had passed. Nope. Pretending to mollify a customer whose expectations have not been met, then billing them extra and hoping they won't notice is very poor customer service. I'm hoping your dining experience will be better, though after reading through the comments, it appears CC has some issues. read more
