I've been here twice over the last year while visiting family in the area. I enjoyed the food, the service and the atmosphere on both occasions. They have varied offerings for dinner, I've had the crab cake and most recently the halibut, and very much enjoyed each. They also have great desserts, which we've shared. If you're looking for a nice place to have a good meal, make sure to try this place.

As I was driving through the Garrett Park neighborhood, I assumed that Apple Maps gave me the wrong turn-by-turn directions. Powering through and trusting my phone, led me us to Black Market Bistro. The restaurant looks like a house/B&B that has been converted into a restaurant with three dining room. I'll say this design really give the bistro a nice down-home, comfy, come one, come all vibe. Black Market Bistro has a varied menu of food, wine, and beers, so groups with mixed appetites should be able to find something great to eat. In addition an an extensive food choices, Black Market Bistro (at least during our visit) had about 4-5 dinner specials. Unfortunately, I have to admit that I stopped listening after the 3rd special. *Shame on me, but I was exhausted from a long day*. For my dining pleasure, I went with the Mediterranean Grain Bowl and Oyster Shrimp Po' Boy. The grain bowl was stuffed with farro, quinoa, veggies and a large serving of Greek yogurt on the side. While it's advertised as an appetizer, it's definitely large enough to share with another person or to have as an entree. It's a good thing that the person with whom I was dining and I decided to order one appetizer. Overall, I thought the po boy was pretty on point taste-wise. However, I wish the po boy would have had 2-4 more oysters. Having lived in New Orleans for four years, I have been spoiled by oyster Po Boys that have been STUFFED with oysters. That said, Black Market Bistro's Oyster Po' Boy does come with a generous side of French Fries. Our servers were great and very friendly. Since we were sitting at the bar, one server took some time to make small talk while we were dining. While the prices might be a little higher compared to other similar spots in the area, I would say that the quality and portions of the food (as well as the ambiance) are worth it. In fact, we were so full from our shared appetizer, bottle of wine and individual entrees that we could not even think about dessert. The Black Market Bistro definitely will go on my "Must Try Again" list. For my next visit, I'll be sure to be well-rested so I can listen to ALL of the dinner specials.

Special: salmon cakes (psst: those pickled onions were surprisingly delicious)

Delightful, delicious, darling. I was charmed from the moment I drove through a picturesque neighborhood to get here, after wanting to get off "the main drag" in town. Set in an old house, the three main dining areas are separate rooms, each as charming as the next. With a varied menu, wine and cocktail list, attentive service, fresh ingredients, well prepared food, and nothing pretentious about the place, this gem has landed itself on my faves list, easily.

Mussels and salad were FANTASTIC! This is my favorite salad anywhere. Fries were great. Steak was alright

This is a long time gem of a place tugged away in residential Garret Park, right on top of an old style post office and next to train treks. I have not been back for a while and recents went for a weekday lunch. We were a party of three and ordered a burger, a pizza, a Cubano sandwich and shared a buffalo mozzarella with grilled asparagus. The pizza and Cubano were good. The burger a tad overcooked. We sat at the coveted porch area on a late summer day and it was perfect for conversation. Service was good and there's plenty of parking. Best part is you can take a leisurely stroll in a tranquil setting after a full meal. I would recommend this place for delightful get together as with family and friends.

What I love about California Fish Grill is that the food isn't overwhelmingly expensive, and with it being a casual spot, the wait wasn't long either. They also serve chicken, for the folks who are not in the seafood mood. I've been here a couple times and got the chance to try a few menu selections. On this visit, I ordered tacos: one cajun shrimp and one cajun fish. It came with two sides: rosemary zucchini and beans. I really loved my meal. Other menu items I've tried include the lobster roll, the branzino with Brussels sprouts and Mexican corn, and the Mediterranean shrimp bowl. I loved everything, but I'll probably vote for the lobster roll and Mexican corn as my favorites!

Finally got to try Chef Tony's on a super hot Friday evening. We actually had trouble deciding…read morewhat to try because there were so many dishes that sounded amazing, but there is only so much that we can eat at once. After negotiations, we ended up with the following: Goat cheese stuffed fig appetizer White lasagna w/ shrimp and crab (one of the specials) w/ roasted veggies. Italian style paella For drinks, my husband got the blueberry margarita and I followed instructions to "ask about our creative mocktails", and ended up with a superlative strawberry no-jito. (It was REALLY good. I want another one. Now. Hub's drink was also tasty but I liked mine better.) Of all the dishes, my favorite was the Italian style paella. Tons of perfectly cooked seafood in a delicious broth with angel hair. Liht and delicious. The white lasagna was also delish but the dominant flavor was the mozzarella; the seafood didn't come through as much with this one. But I absolutely loved the roasted vegetables it came with. Sometimes the simple dishes are the best. The figs were quite tasty, it's hard to go wrong with goat cheese. I think I get dates and figs confused because they weren't quite what I expected but I enjoyed them. The service was friendly and pretty fast. There are still a bunch of dishes there I want to try so I will try to get back on another date night before too long and order something different. Small negatives - it was a tad warm in the restaurant but given that it was HOT A.F. outside, I will cut them slack on that. Also, I wouldn't have minded a small amount of bread with the meal, maybe you have to order it and I just didn't notice? I'm used to a little bit of bread with Italian food so it didn't occur to me to do so but I would have loved to sop up some of the delicious broth from the paella with it.

While the service was friendly, the timing of the food was slower than expected. Our CT's Famous Grilled Caesar Salad arrived about 20 minutes after ordering, and our Crispy Thin White Pizza didn't arrive until about 45 minutes after we placed our order. I was also disappointed to learn that the Tri Color Cheese Tortellini had been removed from the menu, as it had always been one of my favorite dishes here. The CT's Famous Grilled Caesar Salad is still a solid starter. We also enjoyed the Crispy Thin White Pizza, and I liked that it was presented flat rather than stacked, unlike the version at Amalfi Ristorante. That presentation allowed the toppings and crust to shine, while still offering its own distinct flavor. I'd also love to see the Tortoni dessert make a return, even if it's only offered as an occasional special. It was a memorable way to end a meal and would be a nice nostalgic addition to the menu. Overall, the food was enjoyable, but between the longer wait despite mentioning our schedule and the removal of a couple of favorite menu items, this visit didn't quite match the experiences I've had here in the past.

I only went in here to grab some cookies. I was able to try four of them and my thoughts are below. All of the cookies were large. Wild Thai Banana ($6.50) - This was not bad. It tasted like an ideal banana bread. I am not sure what made it Thai as I was unable to figure that out. Coconut Chocolate Chunk ($5.50) - The coconut was not too overpowering, and I liked that combination with the chocolate. This was noticeably heavy too. It feels like a little slice of California in Bethesda, making it a great spot for a casual lunch, brunch, or dinner with friends. We started with the Potato Salad Deviled Eggs and Jalapeño Cornbread. Both were excellent, with the cornbread being a standout. Warm, flavorful, and served with a generous dollop of butter. For my entrée, I ordered the Herbed Chicken Breast Paillard, which was light, fresh, and well-seasoned. The arugula and lemon complemented the dish nicely without overpowering it. Of course, we couldn't leave without trying the cookies for dessert. They definitely lived up to the hype and were the perfect sweet ending to the meal. The only area that fell short was the service. Our server was incredibly friendly, personable, and pleasant throughout the meal, but service felt inconsistent. There were several stretches where we didn't see our server for an extended period, which resulted in longer waits for our entrées and even getting a dessert menu. One example that stood out was when I asked for a to-go sleeve for one of my cookies. Unfortunately, it never arrived, and after waiting for a while, I ended up walking over to the bakery counter myself to request one. It was a little awkward because I was questioned about whether the cookie was actually mine before I could get the sleeve. While I understand the need to verify purchases, the situation likely could have been avoided had the original request been fulfilled. None of these issues were major enough to ruin the experience, but they did take away from what otherwise would have been a seamless visit. Overall, I'd still recommend Summer House Santa Monica for the atmosphere, quality food, and dessert selection. With a little more attentiveness on the service side, this could easily be a five-star experience.
