    New York Melt Sandwich (12.19.24)
    Carroll N.

12.19.24 I came with a friend for lunch today and was surprised at how good the food was. I ordered the New York Melt with old Bay fries and hot chocolate. I loved everything I ordered. Our server was nice. We were there for four hours catching up and we never felt rushed to leave. The restaurant is located in the Olney shopping center. I enjoyed my lunch and would definitely return.

The service was excellent. Most of the food was really good (the crab cake was real crab and not bread crumbs, the spiced shrimp was delicious...). Some good was good or okay (the "old bay" fries were just good fries but not seasoned, the potato skins were heavy on cheese but not flavorful...). Prices a bit steep, but not ridiculous. Big issue -- check the latest health code situation as this place has had many recurring sanitation issues.

This is a classic go to place in olney for a quality meal that's just a little fancy. Good for a date night, celebrating an occasion, or just having an evening dinner. There is a dining room with tables, booths, and bar seating. This place is basically an institution it's been here that long. If I am in the mood for a nice burger or a steak, I'll come here. The bar has televisions usually playing sports. There's bathrooms in the back near the kitchen. You don't need a reservation but I always suggest you make one. This place gets really busy on a Friday and Saturday night. The food is delicious and I've frequented here more times than I can count. The price range is $$. The staff are friendly and there is good service. I really enjoy coming here. The menu is more succinct and doesn't change that often. They do have a daily specials menu that changes. It is a great place to all ages, families, party sizes. It has that home town local dinner spot vibe. My food is always delicious, I definitely recommend coming here. There is parking in the shopping center and a small lot in the back. You can order to go, you pick up and pay at the bar. You can also order through food delivery services.

I was invited to a birthday dinner at the Olney Grille. I was a little hesitant because I had not heard about the restaurant in years. But, I am glad I went. It was packed with diners on a Saturday night and the wait staff was on top of it. We had a party of ten and the waiter got the table drinks and warm bread right away. They had all of the orders out at the same time and everyone seemed pleased. The huge hits of the evening were the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy. I have never seen a plate wiped cleaner in a shorter amount of time. My friend scarfed the meatloaf and mashed potatoes down and was really happy with his dish. It looked homemade. I had the steak salad and it was delicious. There were many grilled vegetables and a fair amount of tender steak. I really enjoyed my meal and would order it again. The birthday boy ordered pork chops and he loved his meal. My only hiccup was that I asked the waiter for a separate check in the beginning of our order. When, we were getting ready to leave he said that they didn't do separate checks. Then, he said that he didn't want everybody else in my party to ask for separate checks. I thought that was not honest and he shouldn't have waited till the end of the meal to let me know that. So, the food was good and the service was good, but clear any requests with management or you might get a surprise at the end of your evening, as I did. I would go back again and ask for a different server. An oldie can be a goodie, even with restaurants.

The meatloaf was just o.k. but the crab bisque was worth the price. A decent local spot.

On this visit, we both got selections like what we had around our early times of visiting this spot. I cannot remember what my friend got, but I ordered one of the "Feasty Specials" which had 1/2 Snow Crab Legs and 1/2 Headless Shrimp. It came with sausages (sliced in pieces), 1 Corn (about 1/4 size), 1 Egg, and 2 Potatoes (the skin easily comes off). You get to pick the seasoning and I had Old Bay. What is presented to you is a large clear bag, steamed up and tied, with seasonings and all mixed up. It is served on a metal tray, and they also place an empty bowl on your table for discarding things. Plastic bib was on, bag opened, and I was ready to dig in. The seasoning took me back to my second visit a few years ago. It was when I first tasted their Old Bay mix and became a fan of it. This Feasty Special was just enough and I was glad to switch things up for a change.

Overall, the food is good, and, in our opinion, you do get what you pay for. Keep in mind that they DO charge you if you have leftover food on your table when you are done. Be mindful of that and make sure to let them know as you are finishing up, and want more, to scale down your portion size. There is a 90-minute window to eat. The servers don't really go over the menu much, so if it is your first time for all you can eat, make sure to take notice that the crab legs do come with a few different flavor options. The bad - They started a new policy, which I understand, but do not like. If you want all you can eat, everyone who is at the table must all order it as well, or nobody can. I understand they are protecting their profits, but that has taken us away from this place on more than one occasion to eat elsewhere as some wanted it and another family members wanted to order off the main menu. Also, service can be extremely slow, and I am not sure if it is intentional or not, but we have complained more than once and made them extend our time. Last time we went, they set our first order of food down on the table and as we were eating, the waitress walked by no less then 5 times and didn't bother to ask if we wanted anything else. Then, magically, when our food was gone, we could not get anyone to come to the table for 15 minutes. Upon ordering our next round, it took another 20 more minutes for the food to arrive. They are sticklers about the 90-minute time frame, and we explained that twice this has happened and 60 minutes of our 90 minutes was wasted waiting on a server and then the food took forever. They allowed us one more round of food, which we appreciated and thought was fair. We start a stopwatch now and if we feel things are going slow, we address that with the server and sometimes put in a new order when the food is being dropped off. Overall, we are pleased to come here a few times a year. We only get all you can eat and usually are happy when we leave. The food is inconsistent as we do get the lobster tail with all you can eat, and it is usually overcooked and can chew like rubber, but still has good flavor. The crab legs sometimes come out waterlogged with salt, but most times piping hot. This is your typical "average" 3-star restaurant. If you are prepared to spend the money for all you can eat, you will leave satisfied and full, but never will you think "I wish I could come here every week". I have not ordered specific entrees off the regular menu so I cannot speak on portion size or quality of the food by ordering that way. Staff is always pleasant, but you do need to get on them if they are slacking.

He rushed us to order, made us uncomfortable when we were deciding what to order, and asked us if we wanted the house made bread. I knew the bread was $5 but he made no mention of it. If I was coming to eat there and was asked if I wanted bread and didn't know there was a charge, I would be upset. It was kind of deceiving, and when the bill came out, shoved the handheld device to pay in my face and I couldn't go over the bill. He told me to put my phone here when paying and that was that. The bill was incorrect and I had to get a manager to fix it (the manger was very friendly and took care of everything). I also have an issue when a server asks us how the food is, right when the food gets put down on the table. We hadn't even had a chance to take a bite. Now, why I gave this place a five star. Like I said before, the ambiance was amazing, if we had a different server, I'm sure it would had been great! The food: it' was top notch. Some of the best food in Maryland. I wouldn't had changed anything with the food. Everything was seasoned perfectly, had the right textures, and tasted so good! Would I go back? Absolutely!

The house is also subdivided into smaller rooms, so there is no more than about 6 tables per section. It made it intimate and well curated. We went with friends and came prepared to eat. We ordered plenty of appetizers, our meals, and 2 desserts. My favorites were the burrata and arancini. My salad was basic, but trying a bite of my husband's steak was fantastic. Pretty much everything was a baseline of good enough to order again, but now that I've gone once the things I need again are pretty much all the appetizers and a steak. As for the desserts, they were just ok. I don't think I've ever had a dry olive oil cake, but this one was. The gelato on top made up for it because it was like an added sauce. Finally, our server was ok. He was great with our orders and refilling our drinks. However, he was a little sneaky with asking us the type of water we wanted and if we wanted the focaccia for the table that you had to pay for. He also just rushed my husband through the bill so he could not see if it was accurate and he had added an appetizer that we never got. He was still nice and good waiter. Just minor things in an overall great experience.

We started off with the salad. It is in a nice sized bowl with greens, cucumber, tomatoes, onions, green peppers and feta cheese, but it is drenched in dressing. I'll have to see if they can make the dressing optional the next time. I ordered the Cava Gyro that also came with fries. Everything was so good as I expected it to be. Perfect temperature too. The other in our party had the same thing and enjoyed their sandwich as well. For dessert I enjoyed their Greek donuts called Loukoumades. In a few pictures online it looks like it is served with the fixings already poured on the donuts - the Nutella and the honey and walnuts, but when I received the dish, each item was separate, so they put you in charge of doing the drizzling of those toppings - I like it. The donuts were round and plump (7 total) with a little sprinkling of sugar and are very airy when you eat each. It has become one of my favorites here. Cava Mezze is a Mediterranean centered restaurant with food that reflects those flavors. We were greeted by a pleasant hostess and shown to our table. The ambiance was refined with a slight upscale vibe. We were seated in the main dining area, which was an open air concept as we could see the kitchen staff preparing food and the bar area as well. They had high table seating by the bar as well. The also offered outdoor seating as well. We were greeted by a pleasant server, who gave us the menus to peruse. There were 3 courses and you could order one from each course. We were a party of two. We selected: Course 1: Crispy potato terrine Course 2: Baklava waffle and smoked salmon toast Course 3: French Toast and Chicken and waffle They also had brunch mania drink specials and I chose the mimosas (oj or grapefruit) for a quarter so I had to have a couple of those (I was not driving!) and my guest got the non-alcoholic blackberry sage lemonade for $2 and a $2 passionfruit lemonade as well (all parties at the table have to participate in the drink specials menu). The server arrived with the complimentary crazy feta hush puppies and they were good: cornmeal, jalapeño, and red onion deep fried with harissa butter and honey on the side. They were very good. The 1st course arrived: The crispy potato terrine arrived hot with whipped feta on the side sitting in a herb vinaigrette. I enjoyed the crispy top of the potato square and the layers of perfectly cooked potato slices. The vinaigrette provided a nice balance to the whipped feta and potato. The second course: baklava waffle and smoked salmon toast. The waffle arrived hot made with crispy phyllo dough and topped with walnuts, and cinnamon orange honey. The waffle was fresh and the flavors went well together. I got the smoked salmon toast with just the salmon on the toast and the whipped crazy feta, pickled beets, dill, and arugula on the side. The citrus vinaigrette was on the salmon and the toast was nice and crispy, but not hard. The smoked salmon was fresh. I really enjoyed it. The third course: French toast and chicken and waffles. The French toast was by far our favorite: crispy French toast covered with marinated berries, orange honey, vanilla, and whipped cream. It was SO good! The chicken and waffles was not what we expected: the chicken that arrived was like the chicken prepared for a schnitzel: flat, breaded, and fried with hardly any flavor ( it did say it in the menu description, but we only saw chicken and waffles...). It was accompanied by honey, feta, and green onion. The waffle was just ok. Needless to say, this was the one dish we did not care for. The quarter mimosa was ok, just a basic one, but the lemonades were really good with me preferring the blackberry safe over the passionfruit. All in all, a nice place to enjoy brunch and have a decent meal.

The rum buns are more nostalgia more than anything, I wouldn't say they'll blow your socks off, but hey, nostalgia is nostalgia. Well, I'll need to dine in here for a full and complete verdict, but my quick grab and go visit was a tad chaotic. Service for taking orders could improve - you walk in, there's a seafood counter to your left, bakery counter to your right (both were unmanned when I walked in) and in the middle is a deli section with the cash register where I assume they take orders. We stood there for a few good minutes before getting anyone's attention despite the fact a manager asking staff (not customers) if everyone was being helped. Clearly staff did not know who was waiting to check out, take orders or just waiting for their orders to arrive. So it was just weird. No one greeting you as you walk in either, it just also weird because there's no clear line anywhere you stand. Otherwise, rum buns were as I remembered them. Also picked up crab dip and chicken salad from the grab and go section from the back and they were just ok, not bad, not great. The hostess seemed to avoid eye contact for about five minutes even though we were standing right in front of her. It felt a little like we had shown up too early for a surprise party that was clearly not for us. Once we were seated, everything improved. Our waitress, Paige, was attentive, thoughtful, and made the experience feel genuinely warm. We started with the mussels, which were exceptional; meaty, creamy, and delicious, with bread good enough to make restraint feel optional. We also had the mini Paloma oyster shooters, which were fun and memorable. I ordered a seasonal cocktail with very little simple syrup, since I usually do not like sweet drinks, and they got it exactly right, which is rarer than it should be. For the main course, we had the seasonal surf and turf special, an 8 oz filet mignon with crab meat over asparagus and succotash. The crust on the steak was excellent, the vegetables were perfectly seasoned, and the filet was cooked exactly as ordered. We finished with their newer take on key lime pie, which was very good and nicely balanced; not too sweet, not too tart. We spent just under $100 per person, so this is not an inexpensive night out. That said, the food quality and service largely justify the price. Overall, aside from the awkward start at the hostess stand, this was an excellent first visit. We spent just under $100 per person, so GrillMarX is not playing in the bargain bin, but the food and service were strong enough that we would absolutely come back
