The polarizing reviews kind of scared us away from doing a whole dinner experience here so I'm glad we went to just the happy hour. BF and I stayed at the Landoll's Mohican castle for one night and stopped by here at around 3ish for their happy hour. It's pretty annoying that their happy hour is 3-4pm instead of a 4 or 5 but there are very limited options around here. Anyways, the menu online does not match what they currently have so I wish they would update! Thankfully I don't have any dietary restrictions or allergies, only strong preferences so the subs weren't dealbreakers. We ordered 4 things off the menu and the wings were the best. Small but perfectly crispy and already seasoned even before the sauce! I got 2 different sauces on the side to try and the garlic one was better than the ginger soy one. The French onion soup had the bread INSIDE the soup which took up a lot of real estate and soaked up all the broth. The melted cheese on top like a Kraft single instead of provolone. The shoestring fries were so skinny and tiny. The bier cheese was good and creamy but there were no chives and I had to ask for them even though that was in their description. Worst server I ever experienced anywhere! First, they couldn't find our reservation even with the verification code number I gave them. the waitress brought us rolls but no silverware until we asked for them two times. Then my nephew ordered an appetizer before dinner and she never brought it until he asked 2 times where is it. She brought it in a carry-out after we were all done eating telling him she was sorry and she took it off the bill. Mind you, it's he Birthday too! Having never been here before, wasn't sure what to expect. Exceeded expectations! The stuffed mushrooms were delicious too, and cooked perfectly. For my main meal, I ate the famous short ribs. So tender! The homemade bread is so good and blueberry preserves complimented the meal. My spouse also really enjoyed their meal. Even if you don't have room for dessert, get it anyway. The Copper Mug is located on Mohican Castle grounds and is the most convenient dining if you're staying in one of their rooms or cottages. This was our second annual Landoll's stay and we were very much looking forward to dining at the Copper Mug again. First off, the staff is super friendly and we had the pleasure of being served by Roger who was not only a terrific server but an absolute sweetheart. Secondly their fall cocktail menu offerings are so enticing I had to order one of each and none of them were disappointing. The Spiced Pear was my favorite, it was light and delicious. The Caramel Apple Martini was a close second but it's more on the heavy side and closer to a dessert than a light cocktail. If you're going to order an appetizer, go with the stuffed mushrooms. We had them during our first stay last year and they were so memorable and delicious we couldn't wait to order them again this time around. I personally had the short ribs with a side of lobster mac and cheese. I wasn't blown away by any means by the short ribs and I could barely tell there was any lobster in my Mac and cheese. I would suggest ordering something different. My friend had the schnitzel and was very pleased. Stopped in for lunch with my wife on Wednesday 10 January as we were staying at the Mohican Lodge. We were the only table during our visit. We ordered adult beverages while reviewing the menu. I was happy that my Manhattan was very tasty as was my wife's whisky sour. We ordered a Caesar Salad and French Dip to split and I ordered their French Onion Soup as well. We asked that it all come out at once, it did not! Our Caesar Salad arrived and it didn't look like a Caesar at all. When our server returned, we asked him about it and found out it was actually their Signature Salad. He apologized, took it, and returned quickly with a Caesar Salad. We thanked him and marveled that there was no Romaine Lettuce on it and it was just a spring mix. Regretfully the spring mix isn't good for my wife with her digestive issues. We stopped in For breakfast while vacationing in Mohican State Forest. It's quiet a bit off the beaten path but it's worth the drive. I had a pretty standard breakfast with eggs over easy, bacon, hash browns and wheat toast. The wheat toast was dense and tasty. They also had a homemade blueberry preserve that was stellar. They also sell the preserves but you have to ask, The main reason we drove so far was that they offer a vegan hash. My wife thought it was delish and said she'd come back again if we are in the area. My family visited the castle and had lunch at the copper mug today. The entire experience was a disappointment. Unless you are staying at the hotel it's not really worth visiting to see the grounds. When you hear about a "castle" you expect to be transported to a medieval landscape. Whoever decided that it was a castle was way off. I would describe it as a large chalet. The check in desk is the only space the general public is welcome inside the main building. After that disappointment we are at the copper mug only to find the restaurant full of flys, and the food was fatty slop. I ordered a schnitzel sandwich and what I got was a goo filled mess of a sandwich I was forced to try to eat with a fork because it was overflowing with what I assume was congealed cheese. The fries that came with it were cold and floppy. And my drink had what looked like styrofoam floating in it. The prices were surprisingly reasonable but were higher than you would expect for the mediocre food. Overall I would recommend avoiding this disappointment and spending your time at any of the other beautiful spaces in the area. read more

There's not a lot of dining options in the Mohican State Park area. My date and I had spent the day hiking all over the park and were very excited about the Copper Mug having read their menu online. I was also curious about the castle. We brought our appetites and intrigue, but felt a bit snookered when we arrived. We were forced to pay $8.00 just to get in the door because their Christmas lights event was going on. Additionally, there would be no outdoor seating as was advertised online. This also meant that the restaurant was operating on a limited Prix Fixe menu, and many of the things we were excited about would not be available. Hungry and without many other strong options we signed up for the next available table. Luckily, there was a bit of time for us to explore the castle grounds. There are several cottages and places to stay on the meandering hillside. I found the castle itself to be particularly interesting. As for the lights, well, I can't say that the castle wasn't neatly decorated with them, but they weren't anything so extraordinary that I would make the trip solely to see them, or say, pay a fee. They had a tree trimming contest between the different staff groups of the castle, which we were given tickets to vote on. This was nice, but it seemed like it was more for them than it was for us. The only staff we met was the restaurant staff, and I'm pretty sure we'll never know who won the contest, but I guess it was something different to help us bide time before dinner. I really liked the restaurant staff. They were warm and affable and mostly on top of it. I don't really have anything negative to say about them. The meal, however, was more of a mixed bag. My date really wanted a vegetarian entrée. They offered a pasta primavera, but since it wasn't part of the Prix Fixe menu, any sides would be extra. Drinks and desserts were also extra. Some of the drinks were quite good, but they came at a steep price given the locale - $10 or more per drink. This added up quick, and while I can't say it was the most expensive meal I've had, I'm not sure the price was congruent with the quality. That said, we opened with a squash soup, seasonal salad, and some warm rolls with blueberry compote. They were all excellent. I could have eaten those all night. For our main course we ended up getting a Chicken Florentine and the Braised Angus Beef Short Rib with sides of Brussel Sprouts, Sweet Potato, Garlic Mashed Potatoes and "Rainbow" Carrots. Most of these were pretty disappointing after having had such a strong start. The Chicken was a bit dry and a challenging eat, the Short Rib was average at best. We were split on the tastiness of the Brussel sprouts, and the garlic mashed potatoes grew on me as I ate. The sweet potato was good as expected. I was expecting heirloom carrots in a variety of colors, instead, I got some undercooked regular old orange carrots. We splurged and got dessert, though neither of us really needed more to eat. I got the ice cream, which they dubbed a "sundae"; and my date got the chocolate cake. Mixed together, they were a pretty good dessert. Separate, they were a bit boring. All told, I'd like to try this place again when they aren't doing a special event, and perhaps when the weather is warmer, so that we can enjoy some outdoor dining. read more

We got our first drinks about 20 min after waiting, and our rolls didn't come out till 7:45, which is an hour after we got there. Our appetizer arrived an hour and 15 minutes after we were seated. Our food wasn't brought out for an hour and a half, and then, it wasn't even what we had ordered. During this time we were not asked if we wanted a drink refill or anything. After we were done eating no one came to take our payment so after about 20 more minutes we had to go find someone to take our payment. They said our waitress had quit mid shift, but the entire staff seemed dis functional and chaotic. The decor and place is beautiful, but the service was terrible. read more

Sadly the food took a while to come out and the steak had to be sent back twice as it was undercooked. The special risotto was considered inedible by one, but ok by another. They have a weekly vegan option, but that is that was the only vegetarian dinner option. The bar selection was probably triple what the food section was. The hotel grounds were pretty though. Once we had our food we didn't see her again (over 30 minutes until we sought out a manager to settle our bill). During the absence we didn't get salt or pepper requested (until we got ourselves from a table who left). Something was off with the scallops. She never returned for us to inform so my husband told the manager who took the scallops off the bill. We then got our own to go container. The manager gave us a $25 gift card to return given our server left to take care of a large 10 person party and never returned. We did think the house salad and appetizer steak tips were delicious. This year, we came up with 4 of us with high expectations, and for a $200 total, we ate at a glorified weading venue. The mushrooms were good but only 5 total for 4 people . The French onion soup was overcooked, and the lobster bisque was meh. My meatloaf was ok, but the salmon was dry and void of any sauce. Why take the skin off. My sons short ribs were dry when the gravy was gone to the mashed potatoe sponge. The wine glass looked like a shot glass on steroids. Our family spent a great afternoon hiking to Lyons Falls from the Pleasant Hill Dam, and then arrived at Landoll's Mohican Castle with a good appetite. Fortunately, Copper Mug came through! Decorated for Christmas, this place is just gorgeous with lots of tasteful red and sparkly touches. Warm bread with butter and their housemade blueberry jam was a huge hit for our table. Darling daughter had the noodles alfredo and loved it - plus kids under 10 eat free with an adult entree, which was a pleasant surprise. I had the chicken saltimbocca which was quite salty but very good. Hubby had the Angus delmonico steak and devoured it so it must have been great. Our older daughter had the blackened salmon and she too was delighted. The desserts looked incredible, but by that time dark had fallen outside and the magical lights were calling to us. Overall a lovely setting and terrific meal - and exploring the "Kingdom of Lights" around the castle and grounds were the perfect ending to a wonderful day. Quite a disappointing experience. Made a reservation for Father's Day lunch, and things seemed promising at first- seated promptly outside, and the area is absolutely gorgeous. The service, however, was ridiculously slow, and the server had very little knowledge of the menu. Three of the six of us ordered hot dishes and the other three salads. The three hot dishes came out first and were surprisingly already very cold, and it took a good 10 minutes for the salads to come out. The food itself was incredibly mediocre. Definitely a pretty area, but if I'm ever back at Mohican I'll find a different spot for lunch. read more

Let me first start with this: Food 10 Experience 3 Have you ever been unlucky enough to be in the middle of an awkward situation involving a couple? Kind of like a Michael Scott/Dwight Schrute awkwardness? Yeah, that's how this dinner felt. Awkward. We had company visiting so we took them Landolls Castle to see the Christmas lights (beautiful) and then to dinner. Our friends are hardcore vegans. I called the Copper Mug ahead of time. I was assured there were several new vegan offerings and that they would mark the reservation as dietary/vegan. We arrived 15 minutes early and were seated ahead of our reservation because they were not that busy. There were several empty tables. We sat for 20 minutes (no server, no water, no bread) until my husband went to the host and said we were ready. Awkward. We were given menus and nothing was marked vegan. We asked the server, she seemed uninformed and explained there was ONE vegan dish, Pasta Primavera, and it was not listed on the menu. Awkward. When we asked about the rolls and the Brussels sprouts being vegan she answered us flippantly while walking away. Awkward. Now listen, I have no issues with this behavior if I walk into a place with no warning that I am toting a few vegans with me. But I called ahead, asked specifically AND they marked our reservation as needing vegan. They even asked, when making the reservation, if we had dietary needs. So I was set up for a great vegan experience. We ordered the Brussel Sprouts as an appetizer, they were altered to be vegan (after an awkward lengthy chat with server)and they were great. The chef is good. He knows what he is doing. Our drinks, Moscow Mules, took 20 minutes to arrive and tasted like pure lime juice. No one finished them. Awkward and sour. We never received our salads. After our entrees were delivered we asked about them (awkward) and then they came out. No one ate them. Our hot food was there. We took the salads home. My Braised Short Ribs (I ain't no vegan) were fabulous. Tender, flavorful, not overly sauced, a perfect hearty portion...gently tucked into a bed of garlic mash. Sigh. My vegan friends loved the pasta, kept raving over the cheesy flavor. My husband got the Walleye (where's Walleye?) in a bed of spiralized veggies. The chef knows what he is doing. In this situation he is the Jim Halpbert of this awkward situation. Here's the deal. When I am told something by phone, when I pay $150 for dinner, when I am told this is a Gordon Ramsey makeover restaurant....I don't expect awkward. I expect informed servers, timely table attention, great cocktails, and prior promises to be kept. The chefs food is being diminished by a house that is not being run efficiently. Sad.
