Here from California again and stopped here on a Monday. It was late afternoon and not crowded nor was there a wait. For our appetizer we ordered Firecracker shrimp, Fried green tomatoes, and Sweet potato muffins. We also had the complimentary corn bread. The appetizers and sweet potatoes muffins were delicious. The cornbread was dense and okay. For our main course we ordered turkey chops, and they came with two sides. We chose mac and cheese and red beans and rice. The turkey chops were ok but the sides were trash. The red beans and rice were (see picture) dry and the macaroni and cheese (see pictures) as well. The mac and cheese was cheeseless.We also ordered the catfish dinner with okra and yams.The yams were delicious and the okra was okay. The catfish skin was dark like old oil was used. It appeared to be cornmeal fried and hard. I should have specified how I wanted them. We also order the waffle and the chickens and there were no complaints. Honestly, we've been to Cornbread many times. Previously, I've always given 5 stars and haven't ever had any complaints but something drastically changed. The drinks as well didn't taste the same and we were told that the bartender was new. We didn't want to complain or send our food back due to our past experiences at other restaurants but we did take pictures. The service was great. Interesting location for a southern soul food hang. They offer a quiet atmosphere. Making it a great place to socialize. The service is very good. Everyone is so nice. The food is great, especially the red beans and rice. The BBQ rib tips being their best. The Mac and cheese is okay but not very creamy. I can't go in for the dry stuff. One of the big attractions is the live music. Smooth, mellow, and conducive to that incredible ambiance. I went with an old friend for lunch and after reviewing the menu, we went with the following: - Louisiana Gumbo - Bayou Combo with fried catfish with collard greens and green beans - salmon croquettes The gumbo was decent, too salty, however their gumbo was a lot better than other MI joints. I had the bayou combo, which is worth it as it allows you to try multiple dishes. The cat fish was bit over fried, rib tips were decent and the wings was not bad. The best item was the green beans, seasoned perfectly and it hit the spot. I would skip the collard greens, had better greens at other joints in MI. I'm very particular about soul food restaurants because of course my grandma makes the best. However, I'd bring my grandma here to eat! We ordered Togo lunch specials (forgot to get photos) of the rib tips and smothered pork chops. Rib tips were just how I like them. The bbq sauce was good too. The mac and cheese I was honestly impressed because a lot of places get it wrong. This was delicious. Greens were good too. The pork chops tasted great. Only complaint was having more gravy added. My only dislike was the cornbread. It was very dry and I didn't know if it was supposed to be sweet or savory. But, I will come back again for a lunch special. 13$ is a good price. read more

The only thing I was a little not so keen on was their fried okra. I love okra. But this seemed like the kind that's frozen in the bag. No flavor and was not seasoned as well as their other foods. My first time here! Came and was able to grab a a seat right At the bar and happy hour was going on, our bartender was a sweetie and gave us great recommendations on what to order. I was able to get the firecracker shrimp and down home wings for $5 each along with a $5 grape kool aid martini. My food came with a side of cornbread. The cornbread was moist, warm and sweet, top tier for real. I was afraid my martini was going to be bright purple but it was a pretty lavender and def tasted like grape koolaid. The shrimp were good but suuuuupwr spicy, the heat overwhelmed the flavor. I think the shrimp themselves could have used a sprinkle of seasoning, however when I ate the other two of three shrimp they weren't that spicy. The wings were three whole wings, which I appreciate in this "wingding world", and were seasoned and fried to perfection. I recently returned to this restaurant in their newer location, and had a completely different experience. I loved all of the historical photos that are part of the decor, and all of the staff were very friendly. My mom and I ordered the chicken and waffle, catfish and grits with sides of hush puppies and sweet potato fries. Everything was delicious! The waffle was light and fluffy, and the chicken tenders were crispy and well seasoned. The catfish was also seasoned very well, and the fry on the sweet potatoes was perfect. My husband and I came here about a month ago and loved the food--it felt like having Sunday dinner at Auntie's or Grandma's house. We came back recently because everything was so delicious the first time, and the second visit was just as good. The cook is wonderfully consistent with the flavors, and that means a lot. The only downside is that the dressing is only served on Sundays, which was disappointing because it was amazing! But other than that, no complaints at all. We went, on a Friday, for the 5-7pm week day happy hour. The happy hour menu was small but there was something on there for both of us. From that menu we shared the Harlem burrito. From the regular menu we got the Mac and cheese, red beans and rice, fried okra and green beans. Everything was delicious. I was scared to get the burrito but it was the best thing I ate. The fried okra was fried HARD so it was hot af and never cooled down. On to the drinks I had the grape Kool aide and he had the mango margarita. Both were absolutely delicious. Service was fast. The atmosphere is perfect; a little dark but not in a bad way, the tv's were playing sports and music played but it wasn't like a typical bar were you're screaming and constantly saying "HUH?!" Excellent first time visit. I started with the gumbo, followed by the catfish with mac & cheese and collard greens. The gumbo was very good with a dark roux which I prefer. I then followed that with some excellent catfish and some fantastic mac & cheese and greens. I love that they have hot sauce at the center of each table too, as it should be. My son got baptized at church yesterday and we then had friends and family over for lunch after and didn't want to cook or try and go out to eat. My wife suggested we try out Cornbread. I didn't want to call and place an order and something get messed up over a phone call so last week, I went into the restaurant to place out catering order and all of the staff was so kind and helpful. While placing the order they brought me a sampling of several different foods we were ordering and I was VERY excited for Sunday! My oldest son went to pick up the food and it was all ready for him and when we got it home it was still hot and was exactly what we ordered. We ate it for lunch and had enough for all of us to eat for dinner again! The ribs, fried chicken, Mac n cheese, yams, green bean, peach cobbler, and sweet potato muffins were all AMAZING! Then today, I get a phone call from the restaurant that I missed and I called back worried they had an issue with our payment or something was messed up. Nope! cornbread is delicious! I really love the way that they season my sweet potatoes and mac & cheese. And while I'm not used to having a soft fry on salmon croquettes, I thoroughly enjoyed this. The sauce on top is delicious as well, and not pictured our fried green tomatoes, which I love they have because it's so rare to find them in the city. From the moment we arrived, we received a very warm and excellent service. I was in town for my sorority's regional conference in Novi. The food was GREAT. Our server, Ms. Donya, was "on point" and I actually thought she was the owner!! I thought this because as I observed interaction with the other staff and flow from thing to thing, it was clear that she was "running things" in an effective manner. However, Ms. Donya informed me that she was not the owner, but has been with the company for a very, very long time. She got a good laugh about me thinking she was the owner and told me that she was going to tell the owner what I said. Our food was delicious and we did not have to wait too long. It was my first time eating at this restaurant. We had a party of 4, we were seated quickly. The service was OK but the food was great. Everyone tried different dishes, but my favorite was the greens and the sweet potato muffins. You have to try those if you go. The restaurant has very nice decor and they play great music, but at a low tone where you can still hear the conversation from others that you're dining with they do have a bar and plenty of parking which is accessible. The only thing I don't like is they put a 20% gratuity on parties of four so please beware of that!
