This place has great food . Absolutely delicious . U will be mad while you're eating it because it will take them over an hour just to take your order . I am here now just getting my food . When I got here almost 2 hours ago the place was almost full I was seated and waited over an hour before the server came over and took my order . By this time all the people that were here all had left and they were cleaning off all the tables and the dishes . After that then they decided to come take my order . Then I still had to wait obviously for them to cook the food . The food is great but u will die of starvation before u even get a bite of the good food you smell . Thanksgiving dinner was a disaster. We will stay home next year or go to a high-end restaurant. Trying to support within our community, but this substandard service is not what we are accustomed to. The food was sitting on the bar countertop uncovered, difficult to reach. People were literally reaching over chafing dishes to get food from the dual chafers. The chafing pans were not changed quickly enough. There was catering , carryouts going on, and the buffet. They were not equipped to handle this, and one could sit back and watch. Sad. read more

After traveling (25) miles to try this place it was a trip that I probably should have taken a closer place for better quality...On 7/23/2023 I drove expecting a fabulous meal but unfortunately it was a disaster I ordered (2)Half slab Bar B Q.. dinners consisting with (2) sides ..one Collard Greens and Candied Yams...see pics...Ribs were extra tough...Greens were loaded with vinegar ..the Yams were the best thing in the box .... Hubby brought home yummy delicious comfort foods tonight which was just what we needed after a long long did I say long week! We had pork chops, meat loaf catfish, Mac n cheese collard greens and yams. Everything was fresh and flavorful. My pork chop was a bit salty for my liking but not so much that it was bad. Mac n cheese and yams were my favorite. Each meal came with a large corn bread muffin. Called in the order and the food was ready when my hubby arrived after work to pick it up. read more

I tried take outfrom this restaurant when I was in Detroit. It was really good. We had the meatloaf, catfish, & fried chicken. All the sides were delicious as well. For dessert we got the last peach cobblers. We added some vanilla ice cream when we got home and it was on and poppin. The next time I return they might be in their new Jefferson location Downtown. I decided to try Detroit Soul last weekend, as I had read a few reviews of the restaurant, and wanted to try a new Soulfood restaurant that was near me. I was happy when I put the location in my GPS to see if was only 20 minutes away, straight show 8 Mile from where I live. I received an added bonus when I arrived, to see that the restaurant is right next to one of my favorite car detailing places. So that was cool! I immediately noticed going in that they had people going in and out ordering, and carrying their orders out, so I figured that was some type of sign to show the food is good. My turn off point was the service. There were two young men (one taking the orders and handling the cash register, and one boxing the orders). Neither one were overly pleasant or helpful. But I decided to go ahead and place my order to check the food out despite (My biggest pet peeve is unprofessional staff and horrible service). Anyway, I ordered the Baked Chicken, Yams and Dressing. After about 20 minutes, I received my food, and I did ask for a manager to provide my feedback of the actions of one of the young gentlemen working there. The manager stated he would address the concern. Overall, the food was good to me. The Yams weren't as sweet as I like, but still good. They Baked Chicken was seasoned good, and the Dressing was good. I can't say the food was just over the top knocked my socks off good, but good enough that I would try the restaurant again. They had very little food at east 8 mile locatio. Had very little park they a bunch of no parking signs hanging over most of the parking spots on the lot. There is a car wash attached to the building. It looked like small amount of food that they had was prepared as soon as home instead of in the restaurant, there was no food at aroma whatsoever at the restaurant. I hope that the second location that they just open is better equipped with plenty of food that you can tell was actually cooked at the business and that is someone's home. Really good soul food is kind of hard to find in Toronto, Canada. Did some research and Detroit Soul was rated very highly for good soul food. Dropped by this past Saturday just past noon and parked out in front of the restaurant. Decided on a fried chicken dinner ($11.99 plus tax) which came with 3 pieces of fried chicken, your choice of 2 sides (I went with mac and cheese and collard greens) and a cornbread muffin. I also had to add a slice of sweet potato pie for dessert. Food took about 15-20 minutes to come out, since it was made to order and fresh. Fried chicken was really good. Nice crispy skin, nicely seasoned and not oily. Meat inside was juicy and tender. Mac and cheese was also good, nicely cooked with lots of cheese. Not the best mac and cheese I have had but still pretty good stuff. Collard greens were perfectly cooked and tender. The sweet potato pie was like a brown sugar style sweet potato pie. Amazing slice of pie that was rich, moist with a nice flaky pie crust. Definitely something you got to get to finish your meal with. If you live in the "D" or are just visiting the "D", I definitely recommend Detroit Soul for good soul food. Prices are reasonable, place is clean and owners are friendly. It's located on 8 mile road which isn't the nicest part of town but sometimes that's where you find the best food. read more

Bad Bad Bad okay mind you this was Labor Day and it was steady but slow.I placed a call in order,Turkey wing dinner turkey was dry no gravy broth dressing no flavor Mac n cheese rubber like come on.Wait for it the yams out the can the greens nasty.I tried the food in the car no sooner than 10 min later my stomach was starting to hurt I'm like wow what is this.My stomach start feeling like contractions I drove 20 min and almost had a BM in the car.My cat fish was not fried all the way.Nice gentleman cash me out but i just had a bad day for me I would not recommend or go back 55doller down the drain.Please clean the windows there big windows but filthy. read more

Likely to return. This is a nice spot for lunch or dinner. I had been meaning to try it and finally did. I had the rib dinner with collards, mac & cheese and cornbread. My cousin had same and potato salad. Hot foods were steaming. Which was great because we ate at the tables. Ribs were tender. Greens a little sweet, but seasoned well and has turkey. I was very disappointed with my unseasoned macaroni and cheese and chicken. The cheese wasn't fully melted or distributed throughout the dish. It tasted like something out of a box. The chicken was underwhelming and they most certainly didn't season it until the ancestors told them to stop. Everything was hot so I guess that's a bright side. Super salad so full. The Mac and Cheese is like my grandma made it. The platter made me feel like that was after Sunday school at church. The elves with great however I don't like the outer edge but that's my personal preference. The cake was moist and tasteful and delicious. The chicken was fried perfectly however it could've used a little bit more seasoning. The catfish was so good. My husband said the black Eye peas use a little more seasoning. The platter they took extra long about 20 minutes. The lady at the window was kind of nice. The plexiglass separating the gas from the staff annoys me at all restaurants. I pulled into the empty parking lot, dark building with O and P lit on open sign. I get out of car leave door open thinking they can't be open, lite on in kitchen area, I tried door. It was open! I go back close my car door and go in. Little lady comes out of kitchen area, lites come on in dining area, she looks at me! I hate that! Just looks at me. I tell her I want a to go order of chicken wings, she says what sides I say dressing, greens and yams. She disappears back into the kitchen area for about 5 minutes and I'm on point now all alert.! This is not what I read on Yelp! In the meantime, a thirtyish year old man came out of the back from a door that I had not noticed and he stood to close to me. I stepped away from him to look at him to let him know he was invading my space! The little lady comes back with an overstuffed carry out box and a separate box. I asked her to open them it was 5 wings, greens stuffing and sweet potatoes in the separate containers. I paid her $22. I get home and to make a long story short it was the worst food I've ever had! The wings were not seasoned, dressing was stuffing and look like a large scoop of white pecan ice cream no favor of sage pepper nothing and the straight out of the can and warmed up, that's all. We're looking for something different for carryout so decided to give this place a shot after reading the great reviews. Tried the fried chicken which was juicy and flavorfully battered. Portion size was enough for two people in my opinion. For sides I got the macaroni and cheese which I highly recommend and the stuffing which I found to be on The salty side. I ordered the catfish dinner with dressing, mac & cheese and a side of greens and the smothered pork chop dinner with green beans and dressing. Everything was seasoned perfectly and tasted homemade. The gravy on the dressing was sooo good. Also had a slice of the German Chocolate cake. It was absolutely delicious! Food takes about 30 minutes to prepare so call your order in. A bunch of women from my church and I went here for lunch on a Saturday. We were the only ones there...for about five minutes. And then BAM! sooooo many people came to enjoy Detroit Soul's food. At the helm that day was Val, a vivacious, lovely woman, who took very good care of us. I'm a vegetarian, so I ordered the Four Sides option for about $15. I had the yummy yams, fries, coleslaw, and the mac and cheese. That mac and cheese, I'm embarrassed to say, beats mine hands down. This was my first time going here the menu isn't full and they don't carry certain items that you would expect from a soul food restaurant. I had the catfish Mac & cheese with cabbage. This restaurant is right down the street from me and with the great reviews, I had to give it a try. I'm not a fan of the parking lot. It doesn't make sense that you have to park at the car wash. I ordered the five piece wings. They were much smaller compared to every other soul food place, and they didn't have any kind of seasoning that I could taste. The macaroni was nothing more than noodles with melted cheese. They don't have mashed potatoes, which I just can't believe. But the have regular deep fried crinkle cut fries, which were in my opinion the best part of the meal. The cornbread was very dense and very cold. Would I suggest coming here? No. But I wouldn't turn it down if someone really wanted to come here. The food wasn't bad, it just wasn't great. Great service both times I went there, and the food is nothing short of amazing. Best yams, ribs, and dressing I've ever had. The fried chicken and mac n cheese are also way up there for the best I've had. The only change I would make would be to make the side cornbread more moist, but that is very minimal. It's easy to tell that the staff here put a lot of thought and effort in their food and serving their customers. I visited this location on Oct 10th, 2020. The place was busy. But the staff kept us abreast as to when our order was coming it. The very courteous, respectful and engaging. I was visiting from Rochester NY and have many business in my plazas. I admired their customer service and wanted to let them know they did a great job. Being a Brotha with a sweet tooth I could not pass up those cakes. I took a couple slices and they were slammin!!!
