Excellent first time visit. I started with the gumbo, followed by the catfish with mac & cheese and collard greens. The gumbo was very good with a dark roux which I prefer. I then followed that with some excellent catfish and some fantastic mac & cheese and greens. I love that they have hot sauce at the center of each table too, as it should be. Great sweet tea, basket of cornbread, sweet potato muffins and peach cobbler too. Very clean, welcoming restaurant with excellent service by Ayress. I will be visiting again. cornbread is delicious! I really love the way that they season my sweet potatoes and mac & cheese. And while I'm not used to having a soft fry on salmon croquettes, I thoroughly enjoyed this. The sauce on top is delicious as well, and not pictured our fried green tomatoes, which I love they have because it's so rare to find them in the city. My son got baptized at church yesterday and we then had friends and family over for lunch after and didn't want to cook or try and go out to eat. My wife suggested we try out Cornbread. I didn't want to call and place an order and something get messed up over a phone call so last week, I went into the restaurant to place out catering order and all of the staff was so kind and helpful. While placing the order they brought me a sampling of several different foods we were ordering and I was VERY excited for Sunday! My oldest son went to pick up the food and it was all ready for him and when we got it home it was still hot and was exactly what we ordered. We ate it for lunch and had enough for all of us to eat for dinner again! The ribs, fried chicken, Mac n cheese, yams, green bean, peach cobbler, and sweet potato muffins were all AMAZING! Then today, I get a phone call from the restaurant that I missed and I called back worried they had an issue with our payment or something was messed up. Nope! It was just the amazing staff calling to make sure everything was good and we enjoyed our food!! Heard a lot about this place on social media and we were visiting for a wedding and it just so happened to be close to our hotel so we went for it! Definitely was craving souls food and they did just okay. The catfish was good which is why they're getting these stars. The mac was mediocre honestly.. gave KFC Mac and that personally is not for me. They didn't give us our cornbread which I didn't realize til we left. It was my first time eating at this restaurant. We had a party of 4, we were seated quickly. The service was OK but the food was great. Everyone tried different dishes, but my favorite was the greens and the sweet potato muffins. You have to try those if you go. The restaurant has very nice decor and they play great music, but at a low tone where you can still hear the conversation from others that you're dining with they do have a bar and plenty of parking which is accessible. The only thing I don't like is they put a 20% gratuity on parties of four so please beware of that! From the moment we arrived, we received a very warm and excellent service. I was in town for my sorority's regional conference in Novi. The food was GREAT. Our server, Ms. Donya, was "on point" and I actually thought she was the owner!! I thought this because as I observed interaction with the other staff and flow from thing to thing, it was clear that she was "running things" in an effective manner. However, Ms. Donya informed me that she was not the owner, but has been with the company for a very, very long time. She got a good laugh about me thinking she was the owner and told me that she was going to tell the owner what I said. Our food was delicious and we did not have to wait too long. The roulade has a slight kick and the FGT were perfectly battered and fried - crispy on the outside, seasoned well, and the inside was warm and sweet. For the table we had fried chicken and waffle, Biloxi Shrimp, Mac n cheese, sweet potato, hush puppies, coke slaw, and sweet tea. Everything was perfection! The waffle was light and fluffy. Hush puppies were fried perfectly and were warm with a hard crunch and soft innards. The fried chicken was moist, flavorful and fall off the bone delicious. Mac n Cheese was like a warm hug from the inside out. The peach cobbler..... oooooohhhhh myyyyyyy goooodnessssssss! Don't even think twice about ordering it - just do it! You won't regret it. I was underwhelmed but there were a few sweet spots. You can only order take out online, no phone orders. The online menu prices differ from the online website ordering price, assuming to cover fees for the website? But it is irritating when you are up charged for ordering take out, yet still ask for a tip when finishing your order. We ordered catfish, Mac side, sweet potato fries and hush puppies which were all delicious (sweet spots)!!! Complaint on hush puppies literally 7 small pups for $5.60. Won't order again strictly due to size/price point, that is an outrageous mark up. They were smashed into a "side" container. The fried okra tasted like the freezer and were soft. The greens were so spicy for a variety of palettes everyone cannot handle that level of spice. The chicken wings and ribs were okay. The atmosphere was nice when I arrived there to pick up my food. The way this restaurant is packed to the rim had me excited for my random choice to pop in here. There is a small patio outside and that was where we sat since every table inside was full. I ordered the sweet tea, and a trio dinner either catfish, whole wings, and ribs, with mac, greens and yams. And of course an order of cornbread, with honey butter. I love that they provide honey butter but it does cost extra. Every single thing I had was on point, greens had an amazing flavor, yams were great, and Mac was good. By far this has been one of my favorite spots out here Michigan. The food was even better than what it looks like on pictures. From the sweet potato cake fritters to gumbo style soup. The cat fish was cooked to perfection, the Mac & cheese was fire. The collard greens delicious. The potato salad was also very delicious. The ambience here is cozy. They had a cute bar inside that's looked very comfortable and Súper convenient if you have to wait for a table. There aren't many tables and I could see it getting really active on a busy day. Our party had a little hiccup with a seating/table request and the manager was able to accommodate us. I do believe that the service could be a bit more attentive and mindful to all customers in the establishment. Our overall experience was delightful and satisfactory. But let's start with the good stuff: - Modern and welcoming venue, but much smaller that their space at Sunset Plaza - Host was excellent - Whitney was doing double-duty as the bartender and waitress. I set my expectations to Low. I was mistaken. Whitney is a rockstar. Attentive, knowledgeable and zero wasted motions. - Two large, clean Unisex bathrooms. - The preparation of the catfish and chicken is excellent. But ultimately, it comes down to the food and culinary experience: - Gone are the mini sweet potato muffins from the basket of complimentary cornbread. - Did the cornbread recipe change? I do not remember it being Sahara desert dry and sooo crumbly. - No slabs of ribs on the menu. They are an unadvertised "sometimes" thing - The rib tips are nothing like what I consider rib tips as I have enjoyed many times in KC and many Texas BBQ joints. Rather; they are mini rib-lettes. - I am a bit hazy on the Mac & Cheese ... I remember it being thicker; less creamy-ish. Did the recipe change? - The reds beans and rice flavors were spot-on, but I remember them being thicker; less soupy-ish. - Portion sizes are a bit smaller. Will I return? Okay. All three stars I am giving go to the owner. He's a great guy & he saved me from telling his manager a thing or 2 about her nasty attitude. Anyway I came here with my dad, sister, & son. Customer service was slow & our waitress had 2 other tables & seemed very flustered. It took her seriously about 15 minutes to make 3 cups of kool aid & take our orders but she was sweet so we gave her a ton of grace. We ordered the bayou platter & since they were out of rib tips we were offered extra chicken or fish. We all opted for extra fish. I choose the blackened catfish option & smothered chicken. Unfortunately when my food came my plate didn't have my blackened catfish or smothered chicken it has 2 friend whole wings. I immediately told the waitress that wasn't what I ordered & her response was "we are out of gravy?" Which I met her with "if you were out of gravy why didn't you tell me that when I ordered smothered chicken, furthermore where is the blackened catfish?" I knew by the look on her face they weren't really out of gravy she just didn't care to correct the error. Next the manager comes over & says she apologized & my fish would be out shortly. I told her I appreciated her apology & asked were they truly out of smothered chicken? The manager then got Smart & said "idk what you're talking about & I have nothing to do with that I just came to apologize about the missing fish." So then I told her that her rude remark wasn't needed & if she had no true intent in correcting the issue respectfully she could leave the table. I also told the waitress her manager was rude & could have stayed where she was with the half apology. About 5 minutes later a man comes to the table very apologetic with my smothered chicken. The same smothered chicken they were supposedly out of. I thanked him & reminded him my blackened fish was still missing, he had no clue but got to work on it immediately. He was very friendly & in customer service that's all it takes. Mistakes happen & customers are a lot more understanding when you acknowledge that vs being nasty about it. He also gave us free peach cobbler & chocolate cake. Maybe 20 minutes later, after all the madness I finally got my blackened catfish which was a 10/10! I didn't care for the red beans & rice but the yams & greens were decent . I loved the cornbread & the blue kool aid as well. The green beans they gave me to replace the greens were cooked just right and were very tasty. What happened to be a pit stop turned into a full fledge brunch! My sister and I were out getting our nails done and we pulled up to use the restroom and decided to eat.... Aaaaand I'm so happy we did! First off, our waitress was the bomb! We sat at the bar and I wish I could remember her name but she was excellent. So welcoming and fun to converse with. Since I heard that Cornbread was a spin-off of Beans & Cornbread I ordered the sweet potato muffins just to see if they were still bomb. I order half a dozen and let me say this....before I knew it, I told her to charge me for a dozen and bring more out. My sister doesn't like sweet potatoes but she fell in love with the muffins. When I say we smashed all twelve before our food came out, it was as if we forgot that we ordered something else. When our plates came out, the food was piping hot and absolutely delicious . The catfish was seasoned perfectly and cooked to perfection. The max and cheese was so creamy and cheesy and the greens were gone FIRST! Delicious. If you ever have a chance, stop by Cornbread.
