Three months later at family week we are able to talk, sit on the same sofa, and he's apologized for all that happened and will express love. The family support groups are very supportive. You don't feel like you're all alone or that your child is the only one. The staff on the therapy side have been very communicative and supportive in putting in place plans to advance. The kids even enjoy just about all of the staff when they are being honest. I've seen kids go from being alone and unable to communicate to being able to communicate and hold themselves accountable. They also have a school program the kids are enrolled into so they do not miss any school. This also helps parents work with the school to get this type of treatment paid for when insurance will not. The one thing I wish was better was communication with the medical professionals. We have been trying to get to speak to the doctor about changes in his medication and it's been impossible even with the therapist seeing them a message each week during the weekly session. Overall we have been down this road before but this time it seems like he's actually getting skills and progress that will last.

While there were aspects of my time at Youth Care that were useful for me, my overall experience was horrid. In February Of 2001 my parents where at their wits end and talked to an educational consultant who recommended this facility. I was skipping school, running away, and in and out of psychiatric hospitals. My parents hired a bounty hunter company to surprise me in the middle of the night in my bedroom while I was sleeping, handcuff me, and put me on an airplane headed to Utah. This was a direct recommendation of the Youth Care facility. I was at this facility for 2.5 years. The treatment team "didn't feel comfortable" graduating me. In the summer of 2003 the treatment team told my parents "there was nothing more they could do for me." Three months later, my parents finally pulled me out. I developed a very hopeless and pessimistic attitude towards my future and my life while in this place. Phone calls were monitored and staff would hang the phone up for me if I wanted to talk to my parents about anything negative having to do with Youth Care. I roomed with skinheads, violent kids, and other troubled youth. One of my most vivid memories was a scandal involving one of my friends and a staff member who made my friend walk naked in front of him at least a couple times. In addition, there were two different instances I was made aware of where 2 separate adult male staff members groomed and sexually pursued a 14-year-old female patient, and in another case of 16-year-old female patient. In both of these cases, the staff members were fired when the scandals were brought to light, but no legal action was ever pursued against these offenders. It seemed to me at the time, and still seems to me that Youth Care didn't want that sort of publicity. I believe that they tried to keep it hush-hush as the police where never involved/called but the kids affected (my peers) had to meet at least once with lawyers representing Youth Care privately. I developed unhealthy eating habits which turned into an eating disorder that I still have to this day, and a life long resentment for my family for sending me to such a awful place. I do not recommend this place to anyone. I have gone through years of family counseling with my parents to get to a point where we can communicate effectively and lovingly again. When someone asks me how my high school experience was, I don't have much to say, because I felt like I was in juvenile prison, as my experience at Youth Care was very similar to that. Lastly, I would like to point out as I am looking through these reviews that it is apparent to me that most of the positive reviews of Youth Care are paid promotion. That's right, you can pay a PR company to leave positive reviews for your company to offset the many negative reviews from actual patients. -David

I had actually attended a different residential treatment facility in Salt Lake for roughly two months and was informed that their sober living was being closed. This turned out to be one the most impactful and positive things that happened to me in early recovery as it ultimately led me to Deer Hollow. I now have just over six months sober and can attest that their entire team, from ownership to clinicians to program coordinators to house managers, genuinely care about the well-being and lasting recovery of their clients. They maintain a long-term focus to help ensure every client has the best chance of ongoing success after you leave the structured environment of sober living / IOP, which from my past experience is a rare quality among treatment programs. Being in an IOP program especially can sometimes seem monotonous and repetitive after a while but Deer Hollow's unique approach to this process kept me engaged and allowed me to continually learn new things about myself, my addiction, and how to best maintain my sobriety going forward. Also, many of the staff members and alumni that participate in the aftercare are incredibly active in local recovery groups which definitely made me feel like I was already apart of these groups from day one. Deerhollow - Public Humiliation, Inappropriate Care, and Profit-Driven Model…read more I sought treatment at Deerhollow for trauma and complicated grief following my daughter's suicide. Despite their strong marketing as one of America's leading trauma facilities, the experience caused me significant additional harm. I was unaware that time outside of scheduled programming was heavily monitored and documented. Everyday personal choices were judged as "not participating," including: * Sitting alone to write letters to my friends and family. * Choosing a video visit with family over group games after clinical hours. * Socializing only with people I knew and trusted at a yoga event. Even though my therapist had privately shared that I was making amazing progress, I was abruptly discharged on a Monday morning for "not participating." While confined to an office, my bags were placed on the front porch for everyone to see. The discharge was timed so I was removed just as other patients returned for lunch, making my exit publicly visible and deeply shaming. I have excellent insurance, yet all referrals provided after they discharged me were out-of-network. They simply dumped me at Recovery Ways, a substance abuse facility in the Salt Lake area, where I was given 50 mg of a sleep aid and was unconscious for nearly two days. I do not drink, smoke, or use drugs -- I was there solely for grief support. Recovery Ways does not have a grief and loss program. I was transferred to a partial hospitalization program even though I was told it was inpatient. Deerhollow also refused to release my daily check-in sheets (my personal 24-hour mental health assessments), claiming they were "not part of my medical records." Even though they documented myself reporting my mental state. The facility operates like a 24/7 monitored reality show with minimal personal freedom or space. I left with more trauma than I arrived with and declined to participate in their outpatient program, what would they offer that other discharged me from their inpatient program? I was completely blindsided by the discharge. My therapist NEVER sat me down to discuss issues inside the house. Final Note: Deerhollow appears to profit significantly off the grief of policemen, firemen, and federal employees through big-buck state and federal contracts. While this business model may be lucrative, it did not translate into compassionate or appropriate care in my case. Strong Recommendation: If you are struggling with trauma or grief, look elsewhere. The polished image does not match the reality many patients experience. Prioritize facilities that offer true dignity and individualized support.
