Cornerstone was on my list of places to visit because I heard about the Sunset Test Kitchen (which was sold out on Saturday) and the lovely gardens. We came to visit on our way home from Sonoma to Oakland as we wanted to avoid the traffic on 37 because of the Sonoma Raceway event. We got here just before it opened at 10 and went into the visitors center to get a map of the place and they also have various brochures about places to visit in Sonoma. The weather was cool and a bit windy when we first started out visiting the grounds as we started in the gardens. It is a lovely place for some quiet time and to just enjoy nature. We visited a store as well as had lunch there and had a wonderful time enjoying the gardens. My favorite part was the pond with the guppies. They have chairs and benches you can sit on near the pond and just take in the view, be in the moment! Another interesting gem is the Wishing Tree, very beautiful. read more

This is a nice place in Sonoma that offers many places to explore. They have restaurants, wineries, a distillery and beautiful Sunset Magazine gardens. It can be a bit tough to get into due to the entrance is on a busy road. The day we visited was a nice sunny day. We first had lunch and then toured the gardens. It is interesting as the have separate areas with different sculptures or water areas along with different plants. We then tried some items from the distillery and ended at a winery. It is nice to have many options in one place without having to drive around and deal with crowds. read more

We stopped here for lunch at the Folk Table. The food was good until we found two hairs in our salad. The chef was courteous and replaced our salad with another menu choice. The chefs should probably wear hairnets, lol. We did not try any of the wines at the tasting rooms, but we did do some shopping. Some of the ladies running the small shops were not friendly at all. Most items were very boutique and therefore over priced. Overall, it was a cute place to stop. read more

Welp, come to be it costs $20/day to rent bags, not FREE for paying customers OR even options for $5/hr but a stern $20 dollars for the DAY, no negotiations. The worst food ever eaten at Cornerstone outside eating area with picnic tables served by the kiosk located in the front of the area. We ordered a chicken platter which was $22 and came back with two tiny, skinny pieces of chicken and some lettuce. We sat waiting for this for over 45 minutes and finally, after asking about our lunch, they said they forgot to txt us that it was ready. This chicken was returned and they gave us another chicken platter with two decent sized pieces of chicken which when cut open were completely raw. Again, we returned this and got our money back. However, I also had ordered the chopped salad which had lettuce that was brown and salami pieces which were almost 90% fat. After a few bites, I had to run to the bathroom and, unfortunately, threw everything up. This was instantaneous . I never ever throw up, so it was a total shock. Something wasn't right with the salami! It was the worst food ever!! Don't waste your money!! read more

This is a must stop for me when in the area and use it as a jumping off point prior to any other adventures in wine country. Typically I spend about an hour here and find their shopping and galleries to standout amongst the town of Sonoma's shopping and dining options. However, the grounds and sculpture gardens are the real stars here! You can easily spend an hour or more roaming the different displays (some rotate and others have been here for quite a while.) All the while you have amazing views of Sonoma, birds and sunshine to accompany your walk. I would say it's a nice place to let your kids roam around in for a little while-they have some interactive scuplture areas like the Wishing Garden and even a recently installed smaller "Children's Garden." Cornerstone is truly one of my favorite places in Sonoma and I have taken out of town visitors here, who I knew would appreciate the gardens and serenity to be found here. Stop in, use the restrooms on your road trip, take an obligatory photo in the big blue chair and enjoy! read more

This is a great place to stop shop and take photos. I have been here a few times now and each time I get out and take a few pics. They have a nice size parking lot so that's not an issue. it's also very dog and kid friendly so you can bring the family. The store's here are cool to check out. In the back, they have areas designed for photos. Just walk around check out the different areas and snap away. Oh yeah, the best part is that its free. So if you're in the area and need to use the restroom or just stretch your legs make sure to stop here. read more

This was a fun little weekend excursion from Davis. We met family coming from the North Bay and had a great time exploring the shops. It's super mellow if you get there early and has family friendly gardens to stroll through or picnic. We ate at the cafe there and loved that they had vegan and gluten free options. Amazing spot to spend the day! They have ample photo ops with the gardens, cafe, and different tasting rooms. We enjoyed a day exploring the gardens and getting creative with pictures. They have many art installations, plants, and scenic spaces to explore. It is not that deep into Sonoma so you can easily access this area. Also the fact that there are a few wine tasting rooms you can really spend a day exploring what each of those have to offer as they are each unique. The cafe appeared to have a good menu, we didn't eat there as we packed a lunch. The gardens are free. Each wine tasting ranges from $10-$15 per person. read more

Cornerstone is fun and enchanting. What nice stop close-in on the road to the wine country. They have winding garden paths decorated with unique works of outdoor art for quiet enjoyment. It was so nice to wander the grounds, sip a glass of wine and enjoy the sunshine. There are a myriad of plants, flowers everywhere, and even some examples of vegetable plants we can grow in Northern California. Cornerstone has a cafe, some charming shops, easy parking, two wine tasting rooms, and very nice facilities you can rent for special events. We have driven past Cornerstone so many times, completely unaware how beautiful, welcoming, and relaxing a stop it truly is. We'll be making it a regular stop on our trips to the Wine Country. read more

My friends and I went here for the free weekend 8/26-27, 2006. Regular price $9 for adults. I recommend the gardens if you can go on a free weekend (last weekend of the month from June-Aug) or happen to be in the area. It's across the street from Gloria Ferrer Champagne. We happened on a free docent tour at 11am too. It was a good tour of the highlights and then we could wonder around on our own. I liked the Blue Tree, but the docent told us that they are going to take it down. The tree is dying and might fall. They rotate the artist's work, so you need to come by more often. Recommended. Cute place we stopped here on the way back from Napa. They have a few cute interesting shops and a restaurant with a little snack/water spot. The overall grounds are very nice and well maintained. It would be nice if they built a little park for the kids to play on. The bird houses where really cute and just walking around and see the nice landscaping and lily pads in the pond. read more

Driven past that giant chair for years, finally made a day to go there. What a great spot in Sonoma. The gardens are beautiful, lot's of great ideas. The shops are fun to shop and browse. The restaurant was so good, I will be back soon. We both had the salads and a nice glass of wine. I had the duck confit salad, was so good, crispy skin, on a bed of really nice lettuces. We also had the roasted vegetable salad, delicious too. This is going to be my go to spot when I have guests in town, easy, beautiful drive from SF, to 37, left on Arnold. Fun find. read more

Such beautiful gardens here. Definitely worth a stop if you're visiting the area or if you're a local. I'd heard about Cornerstone when I was looking to get married but had never been. I recently came with my mother-in-law for a morning with my daughter. We walked the gardens for over an hour. I'd love to spend more time going into the shops but with a 2 year old that wouldn't have been easy. We ate at the cafe there which was good but very overpriced. Parking here was easy. Lots of tasting rooms in the vicinity. You could easily spend an entire day here. I'd definitely recommend checking out Cornerstone. I just wish they allowed a picnic area. read more

First time coming here and I really enjoyed the cornerstone. Wish more gardens would have been opened but it was a beautiful day and it wasn't overly crowded. The gardens that we did see have beautiful designs and they are all very blissful. They woke cute little shops with some beautiful items, some are pricey but it is still nice to go see. They have a few different places to eat and some rating rooms which is pretty cool. Overall this place is very lively and beautiful. The scenery is hip and it is also kid friendly. Parking is great, lots of room, we didn't have any issues. There's isn't really any staff checking in but that wasn't a problem, if you walk in some of the eateries or shops there is very sweet kind staff. I will be back! read more

We stopped here as part of our trip up into wine country over the weekend and it's a pretty cool spot! There are a handful of different things to do here, from shopping to wine tasting to trying some of their unusual liquor, such as a "figcello", a figgy take on limoncello. The cafe is quite good, and the food was welcome after a day of driving around. The chicken sandwich croissant was super delicious. Be warned, however, their portions definitely range on the small side. Overall, a very worthwhile place to check out while you do all of your other wining and uh, more wining in the area. read more

I just love what Sunset Magazine did to this place. It feels good visiting, very inviting and I can't stop recommending. I love the different shops filled with unique items. The merchants are proud of their business, very welcoming and does not seem to mind people just wanting to browse without the pressure of making a purchase (although I am an exception - I just about bought 2 or more things from every store I went into... lol). We came here for a pre-half marathon dinner.. what a gorgeous location!! They have tons of cute shabby chic stores. Great place to try different wines. I could see a wedding or big party here being absolutely beautiful!! They have a gorgeous stream and pond with lily pads and frogs. Well for a visit to Cornerstone Sonoma you should at least have two hours. Cornerstone Sonoma combines the art of wine and the art of - well art! You find all those little shops around this corner mixed with a small restaurant and several wine tasting rooms. And In the summer you will find a lot of outdoor art exhibitions of ANY kind. Take the time to stroll through the gardens and have a Glas of wine in the sun. You will not regret your stop here. And yes you can spend the whole day here, so plan ahead and make sure you have enough time! read more

I love gardening and anything that smells "Sunset magazine lifestyle", so when I heard about this Cornerstone Sonoma place being the location for another Sunset gardens (I have been at the HQ in Menlo Park before and loved it) I could not resist to just go one Sunday. My first time in Sonoma and this was my entry port. Awesome time I spent there, loved mostly the Sunset gardens with intricate sculptures and whimsical play with the spaces and shapes. All very well planned and structured for all tastes: the ones who go there only for the wine, can sit and chill and some places dedicated to that purpose, the shop-addicts can get expensive souvenirs or gifts, the wanderers can go after the butterflies in the gardens, the marriage material couples can perpetuate their selfies in pretty scenarios there...and you can even take cooking classes and rent the entire venue for events. What a gem!!! I've been to Sonoma and Napa many many times, but had never been here until recently when we attended the French Flea Market. This place is gorgeous! Can't wait to go back on a less rainy/windy day and enjoy it again! Large parking lot, and easy to find. It's a large outdoor 'mall' with winery tasting rooms, cool shops, restaurants, and gardens. Cornerstone is a photographer's playground! Some of you have probably zoomed right past the giant blue adirondack chair prominently marking Cornerstone while driving along Hwy 121, not even thinking twice to make a stop. I know I have. While I've stopped here before to make a pit stop, I hadn't really explored the place until yesterday. Cornerstone is made up of various interactive gardens showcasing contemporary, innovative designs from landscape architects and designers from all over the world. From a colorful field of daisy pinwheels to a diseased tree covered in thousands of round baby blue Christmas ornaments, it's artwork intertwined with nature that you won't find anywhere else. You can easily spend hours here exploring not only at the art gardens, but inside the funky retails shops and galleries as well. Zipper is a modern home accessories store filled with endless atypical gift items. Local wineries including Larson and one of my personal favorites, Roshambo, have tasting rooms here, which are worth checking out just for their unique spaces. Like I mentioned, you'll get some amazingly fun shots here, perfect for couples engagement photos! Plus, there are also some really beautiful sites for weddings and private events. My husband & I must have visited a dozen venues during our engagement and looked up countless more on HereComesTheGuide.com. In the end we chose our initial favorite, Cornerstone Gardens, and are very happy that we went with that choice. We had many people tell us that our July wedding at Cornerstone was one of the best weddings that they had been to and the venue definitely played a part in that. It is definitely unique, and that was what we were going for. Our guests loved the different sites between the ceremony on the vineyard lawn, dinner in the tent, and dancing in the barn. They also loved our 90 minute cocktail hour to allow time for guests to wander around the grounds and see the art structures. We loved the beautiful photos that we got during that time. Now, I must admit that all of this came with a price. Cornerstone only provides the bare bones, which means that everything is a la carte. Therefore we had to do a lot of work finding vendors from everything from the dinner tables to the sound system for our pianist and mics during the ceremony. We did cut some corners and had friends put up paper lanterns in the tent & barn, and bought trendy but cheap floor lamps at Target rather than renting lighting. We also got married on a Friday, since the rental cost was much cheaper than Saturday. That was probably the best choice that we made, as it was much easier to find vendors for a Friday in July than a Saturday. All-in-all, I believe our wedding venue was a memorable place and well worth the effort in the end. read more

If you travel to Napa to visit all the wineries, make sure you add this place to your stop. If you like seeing creative structures, wine tasting, shopping and getting a bite to eat, then this is your go to place. The first time I came here was for a wedding I was coordinating. The grounds are perfect for a ceremony, reception and taking beautiful unique pictures. The catering service was very good. Planning a wedding: 1. They have a large outdoor tent. The tent is only enclosed on the top and not on the surrounding areas. Make sure you talk to onsite coordinator as it can get very windy during certain times of the year. Centerpieces can blow everywhere if they are tall and not weighted down. 2. Outdoor barn where you can have the reception inside. 3. Restrooms are located in the middle area of the shopping stores closest to the tent sight. 4. Parking is great (private lot) and you can drive your car right to the tent sight for setting up. 5. One of the best features is the white roses that surround the entire Tent sight. When in bloom it is breathtaking. 6. Cost: Surprisingly it is moderately affordable, even for the budget bride. This is Sonoma/Napa it can be worse. You might want to consider checking it out. Aside from having a wedding here, In my opinion this place is for taking a stroll with your honey and seeing the beautiful structures and taking lots of pictures versus going here solely for wine tasting. read more

My first visit to Cornerstone was an outdoor bar mitzvah so exquisitely beautiful that words barely seem sufficient. If you're planning a wedding or party and have some $$$ to throw down check this place out. The setting, the pond, the outdoor dining, the barn... it's picture perfect. My second visit occurred after learning that their free outdoor sculpture garden has been featured in "1001 Gardens to See Before You Die". The walk-through installations showcase designs from the world's finest landscape architects and designers. Each was given 1,800 square feet plus a small bit of direction and left on their own to "invent, inform, and create beautiful and thought provoking spaces". They did just that then improved the experience by allowing you to walk through it all while enjoying a glass of wine. Keating and Meadowcroft are the two wine rooms featured on the site with Keating being the higher quality (IMO). Park 121 is also there, with it's small plate dining, Blue Bottle coffee, bocce ball court, and more wine. There's also some art galleries, boutiques, and furnishings stores at Cornerstone, all of which can be enjoyed with wine glass in hand (are you catching the theme here?). Overall, there was enough to keep me interested for about 1 hour. If you're driving up from Marin, Cornerstone is right on your way to Carneros and the Valley and worth a stop. There's a small, free parking lot, clean restrooms, wine, and art. If you're coming from the East Bay it's out of your way and not a must see. This is the kind of place I'd likely stop at again, a couple years from now. The gardens, art, and shop items will have changed and I'll again be interested to check them out, wine in hand. There is one other reason, a giant blue Adirondack chair, that makes this a worthy stop. Climb on up then snap some photos. Don't forget to hold up that glass of wine. read more

I guess the word is interesting...but not awesome. well maintained, or exciting. Amateurish...not the avaunt garde displays they advertise. Thank goodness the self tour is free...I would have been clamoring for my money back on this one. It seems like student project...not the works of well know artist/architects. I did not get the sense of a room...away from the other installations at any time...failed to transformation me. Most were silly...but I did like the tube, and the tomato farm. The best landscaped area was the tent area (for wedding, events) this was very nice...lush, well laid out. I guess if you need a break from wineries...and you are with a group, you might wander through...just for laughs. read more

This place is fantastic! I took my toddler there, and it was a perfect day in Sonoma. There are gardens, lots of open grassy areas for kids to run around in, live music! Plenty of food options including pizza, appetizer, restaurant meals. There are shops and galleries. There's two or three places where you can get tastings for wine, and a coffee shop. Something for everyone. I got my son a milk from the coffee shop, and we sat down with some wine on a really comfortable seating area outside of Obsidian. The kind lady there offered my son a lollipop, which kept him preoccupied while we sipped on our wine. Would highly recommend for a day out! read more

Back when I was a student in the Landscape Design & architecture program at Davis this was a location we took a field trip to visit this site to support some of our fellow students who participated in creating a display. Through the weeks I heard rumors of the concepts that they were working on, but I was truly blown away by some of the displays. Some of my personal favorites were the dedication wall to the emigrant workers, of course the surreal blue tree and the knowledge of man as in waters. They had a antique shop, I usually try to stay out of those places, I'm pretty clumsy... Unfortunately I came back about a year later, and have to admit that the displays were not entirely in the pristine condition that I remember. So I really hope they either repair some of these areas or even add in new designs. Still because they are charging you for entrance I expected they would maintain it a little more. read more
