I've been living out in the middle of the mojave desert for a while now, so when I started a new job based in Los Angeles in February I was more than a little bit spooked. Not about the traffic, or the crowds, or the noise, or the lights, camera, action: none of those pedantic worries was primary in my mind. No, I was worried about my hair (crazy desert freak flag), my makeup (can't remember the last time I bought mascara), and my clothing (apparently a wifebeater worn with ripped jeans and a giant belt buckle is Not Okay For The Office Environment). I spent three sleepless nights Freaking Out about my wardrobe. I mean, first impressions, right? I combed through my wardrobe at least eighteen times, with giant crocodile tears in my eyes. On my second day of work, my new employer asked me to make an appointment with Felicity Murphy to have professional corporate photos taken for publicity / announcements, external email blasts, and the internal corporate directory. Crap. Making an appointment with Felicity was a breeze: she provided a slate of open slots and I selected one that worked for me. She provided detailed directions on how to navigate to her studio, where to park, and how to access the building that were spot-on. I brought several changes of clothes, including what I was wearing that day. Yes, the 6-year-old banana republic suit featured prominently, even though I hadn't tried it on in two years. When I arrived at her amazing loft, Felicity and her makeup artist immediately made me feel comfortable. I was offered a beverage and a chair, and then I sat under the skillful hands of an amazing makeup virtuoso who blended the red blotches on my uber-sensitive skin artfully, making me seem wrinkle free and glowy. Seriously, I glowed. I felt gorgeous. There's nothing better than abandoning a crap day at the office to sit and be pampered by beautiful women who aim to make you look as beautiful and dewy-eyed as possible. Nothing. Ms. Makeup then softly curled my crazy hair and flattened it down a bit so that it would lie flat in photos, and set me free to pick one of my dowdy outfits and pose for Felicity. Felicity's photography studio was bathed in gorgeous afternoon light, and I tentatively sat on the sofa and we started our shoot. About fifteen to twenty minutes later, after one costume change, we were pretty much done. It took longer for me to drive to her studio than it did for Felicity and Co. to make me look beautiful. When the photos arrived, our marketing manager came up to my cubicle, starry eyed. "WOW," he said. "YOU are photogenic." "Not really," I said. "It's just Felicity working her magic." I posted one of Felicity's photos on my linkedin account and one of my best friends called me that evening. "Um, hey there, Kerri," he said. "The desert has done some amazing things to you, it seems. This is SO important in a place like LA, where I see lovely photos from very popular photographers, where every actor looks exactly the same: pastel background, actor positioned slightly to one side, bright lighting, etc. If the first thing I notice is the style of the specific photographer over the individual actor in the photo, that is money wasted. She makes you feel right at home and the whole time it felt very creative, she works with where you're going, if you open up during the session she'll capture it. The hardest part about actor headshots have always been for me, capturing the essence of who I am in those photos without the end product feeling still or stagnant.
