Sometimes you just need a good diner. If you happen to be in Cortland for whatever reason, you're in luck, because this is a good one. They've got the things you want from a diner. Eggs. Burgers. Sandwiches. Fries. Nothing is going to blow your mind, but it's a diner. Solid, hearty food at a good price. I rolled with the Frisco Melt, which is a patty melt on sourdough topped with onion, tomato, american cheese, and russian dressing. Solid. One of my kids got chicken fingers and fries (solid), and the other split a tuna sandwich and the soup of the day (stuffed pepper) with my wife. The soup was surprisingly good, and the tuna sandwich was a tuna sandwich. What makes this place great isn't the run of the mill decor, but the sweethearts that work there. Our servers were so nice, even the ones who weren't waiting on us. And the lady who rung us up told me that the horrific green/orange/purple manicure that my four year old daughter gave me looked great, which was definitely not true, but much appreciated. read more

I have eaten at the Cortland Diner 3 times. I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt. I will not eat there again. The last experience was with a friend. My friend ordered a chicken club. When the sandwich came out, my order wasn't up yet. The cook put the sandwich under the heat lights. The waitress didn't move it out from under the lights. It was chicken salad, which has mayonnaise, right? I ordered breakfast: poached eggs, toast, home fries, bacon. I asked for the bacon to be crispy. The eggs were poached easy which was fine. The home fries were so greasy, the bacon barely had a crunch and to top it all off, the toast wasn't buttered. It was slathered with mayonnaise. I don't eat mayonnaise. It doesn't agree with me. It didn't even occur to me that it would be on breakfast toast with eggs. I didn't see it on the first half slice as it was not much. When I opened the next two halves, there was a thick layer of white goo. I asked my friend, is this mayonnaise? The answer came back a resounding, yes. Uh Oh, I thought. I promptly heaved it up when I got home. Too bad Cortland Diner. You've lost my business for life. read more

If you're in Cortland this is a solid diner with good food. It's a small college town. Food and service are good. Its always crowded. Its a little dated. They need a good plumber. The ladies room toilet is atrocious. It backs up and spills on the floor causing flooding. Thats a major no for me. read more

We ordered blueberry pancakes, corn beef hash, a side of eggs, and the scrambled egg special. All came out to only $25 (including tip) for 2 adults! This restaurant has been a million things over the years but Cortland Diner tops them all with the cute diner atmosphere and delicious food. Really excellent breakfast options and service is always quick. We've never had bad service here, the servers are so sweet and always smiling. My regular order is eggs over medium with sausage, home fries, and toast. Eggs cooked perfectly and the home fries always have yummy little crispy bits. Lots of great jelly/jam options! I discovered this hidden gym when I was dropping my daughter off to college. What a great diner! I ordered a patty melt with Swiss cheese and onions and a side salad. My husband got a different type of patty melt with tomato and Russian dressing! We thoroughly enjoyed everything. Fries were really crispy and delicious and the buttery taste of the burger and crunch of the toast was unbelievable. our waitress was such a doll, so much fun and smiling all the time. What a lovely breakfast we had at the Cortland diner! Went with a friend and we went in on the Oreo waffle, pancakes, home fries and some bacon. All were delicious and can easily guarantee that whatever you order for breakfast you'll be satisfied. Prices to portion size were great! The staff was kind, service was quick and they long tolerated 2 friends catching up for hours. The diner itself is clean and cute with a relaxed energy despite being consistently full and just enough parking to accommodate its size. Came in 4:30 on Fri. Had my usual diner order of corned beef hash, but it was sadly mushy...good corned beef hash should be crispy, not soggy. My stomach was mildly upset afterwards, which is not what usually happens when I have food from a greasy spoon. Diner food usually sits well. This gamey-livery-tasting corned beef mush did not sit well. Not a good time. I had to get up and ask for silverware, as they forgot to give me utensils after serving me...but friendly service, nonetheless. There were a few parties that came in to the mostly quiet place after I ordered, but not too crazy. Would be nice if they provided more than one thin paper napkin, as well as laid the silverware wrapped in said napkin on the table right away as you're seated, as with most places. The decor is charming, though! Very 1950s kitsch. The wraps and sandwiches are popular, probably because the breakfast items may not be. The eggs/homefries/toast were all right, though. Note: Yes, I was the only PoC there, which...well, isn't surprising, but I do wonder if that affected things a bit. I'm still getting used to being the only one in these spaces. read more

Not horrible but not great; average at best. The eggs were over cooked but I did ask for extra crispy bacon and toast and they accommodated my request. The eggs, home fries and bacon were essentially one note - Besides the texture the food tasted like diner grease. The rye toast was the best thing I had. My son recently moved to the area and we watched some good breakfast. We used my ultimate helper Yelp and found the Cortland dinner. The place is very conveniently located on a corner with ample parking. The interior is open layout so feels on the larger size for a smaller space. The waitress we had was very kind and had a great welcoming smile. She also did a great job of keeping our coffee cup full. I had a very traditional bacon eggs and hash brown breakfast which the eggs were cooked perfectly. The bacon was crispy but not burnt and the hash browns were crunchy on the outside but soft on the interior of the ample pile I got. Very good value for the dollar. read more

Sorry, no pictures! Was in town with my boyfriend and his family. We decided to stop here on our way home. The diner has an open kitchen, which is something I've always admired. We were a rather large group; 7 adults and 2 kids. We were told about a 15 minute wait. We were seated in about 20 mins. Our waitress was amazing handling our group! We ordered different egg platters, omelettes, corned beef hash, waffles and chicken fingers. Safe to say we all enjoyed it as only a half of waffle and one chicken remained. I ordered scrambled eggs and bacon with hash-browns. A very simple dish...but it was delicious! The hash browns were seasoned nicely. My boyfriend had the meat lovers omelette. I had a bite and it was yummy. He chose home fries instead of hash-browns. I also had a bite and they are very yummy! Great balance of seasonings. Service and food were both amazing! The food was such extremely low quality and poor plating. The chicken cordon bleu is solely a piece of processed, breaded chicken with a piece of sliced deli ham on top. It is not at all what expected and when we brought that to the waitress attention, she immediately was rude stating that's EXACTLY what that is. The cook was very rude as well, the waitress went to talk to him then came back and threw our menu on the table stating just get something else. We had gotten a gyro too with the order but took it home due to how poor the service and environment became as well as how much of a joke the chicken was. We could not complain about the gyro which maybe we should have checked at the restaurant. When we got home and opened it, it was just processed lamb that tastes like rubber and so overly messy, we could barely even take a few bites. We have been there plenty of times over the years and never once experienced food or service like this. Do not go outside of the breakfast menu and even that, make sure your bacon gets cooked. read more

This is a very busy place on weekends and there is limited parking so get there early if going on a weekend. We came for lunch. Hubby had a footlong hotdogs with fries. He loved it! I had a hamburger with Bleu cheese and fries. Literally 2 1/2" thick. Meat was juicy, blue cheese generous, bun held up to the burger. I could only eat half the burger, but I enjoyed every bite. I live in Ithaca and used to drive to Cortland at least once a week just to get my Liver and onions. However, about 6 months ago I got served my usual Liver and Onions supper only to find that 1 of the 2 pieces of Liver was barely cooked on the outside and the rest was raw. I quietly called the waitress over and calmly asked her if the cook could either replace that one piece of Liver or cook it a bit more so it was done. She told me "sure and took it back to the cook to be corrected. I also mentioned that my macaroni salad "tasted funny" and that they might want to ck it to be sure it wasn't spoiled somehow. She told me "no problem...ty." A few mins later I seen the cook (older guy with glasses) glaring at me and throwing a fit. He told me "if you have a problem with the food that you get served here, then maybe you should stop coming here" from the grill loud enough for me to hear. I didn't reply and calmly ate the Liver that he'd recorded and the waitress brought back. When I went up to pay prob 15 mins later, the cook was still going on about it to the guy next to him and shouted back at me " if you don't like the food we serve you, then don't bother coming back"....then glared at me as I calmly walked out. I didn't want to cause a scene so I didn't reply or get in his face after that time as my temper wanted me too...I don't need that and both the business/customers didn't either. I used to love coming there as a valued customer as the food and service is normally excellent...but now I don't feel like I'm even welcome there anymore and I have stopped going there because I don't want or need the stress. I miss my Liver and Onions but what can I do. Hopefully no one else was made to feel this way. Sad I had to be...but it is as it is. It's been 6 months now. read more

This place is amazing! The waitress immediately came to get our drink orders and was very frequent in checking on us. The food was so delicious and well made. I got the frisco melt and it was so juicy and I would recommend it. The diner feels like an actual 50's diner and I'm sorry to say I didn't get any pictures. Afterwards, I got a chocolate peanut butter shake that had real peanut butter in it. The only thing that could've been better was that the fries were a bit soggy.
