I would give this establishment a zero if possible. I walked in at around 11am on a Sunday with two other parties. The hostess greeted everyone and let them know where they may be seated, but when she came back to grab my boyfriend and I our seats, she let us know that we can take a seat anywhere we'd like. After we got our food, I walked up to the register where there was a male server, and asked him for ketchup. He gave me an annoyed stare for a long time, which intimidated me, so I walked back to my seat and waited for it. When he came to drop off my ketchup, I saw that it was frozen. Since it was apparent that I needed help (I was shaking my ketchup bottle thinking that should help), the hostess came over, but when I told her what happened and how I felt about the server's attitude towards me, and my frozen ketchup, she said "I'm sorry about that" and walked away to the register to talk about me with her coworkers behind the register very loudly, saying, "she complained about her ketchup, like, the smallest thing." My boyfriend was confused, because him and I could hear her very well, and overhearing her conversation with her coworker started to create an unsafe space for us. We were actually just expecting a new bottle of ketchup, but she did not come back with another ketchup, nor did she take the frozen ketchup from our table with her when she walked away. Feeling deeply upset, I asked for my server to bring me a box and let him know why I am not very happy with my experience. He told me, "he is normally not like that, sorry." Few minutes later, the server who gave me the frozen ketchup came over and told me that there was a 'misunderstanding' and gave me a 10% discount on my bill. I cannot explain the stress I was put under with this dining experience, because I was clearly being treated differently. I still wonder why I was given a cold, obviously frozen ketchup, and if it all really was just a misunderstanding. Both servers and the hostess carelessly said "I'm sorry," but cared even less about bettering our dining experience. It is safe to say that I will never be returning. read more

I came here with a couple of friends for dinner and I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of options and dishes that they offer. I've been craving a really good pasta dish and they had exactly that. Included on the menu are burgers, gyros, souvlaki, spanakopita and so much more! I also found out that they offer breakfast all day long! I can't wait to come back for that because the menu looks delicious. I highly recommend this place for any occasion. "Mehh" about sums it up... I came here between breakfast/lunch with a coworker and we ordered the deep-fried artichoke and the bacon burger. They were both fine but nothing to rave about, though the prices were very reasonable. But for "reasonable" prices you can find establishments with better food on The Ave. Maybe we didn't order the right things. My friends and I were thoroughly disappointed by this restaurant. The service was bad, our waitress was not friendly and seemed like she was in a rush to get us to leave even though there were plenty of empty tables. She brought the check over with the food and didn't say "take your time" or anything like that. When she was bringing over the bottle of syrup she refused to set it down on the table, instead, hovering it above the table for an unnecessarily long amount of time before one of my friends took it from her. In addition to the bad service, the food was not good either. Three of us ordered the butterscotch French toast, and although there was absolutely no butterscotch flavor, the French toast itself was more like a pancake than French toast. Stopped in with hubby and my daughter after an orientation at UW because we were all starving. I was a little put off when our server started out with "you guys don't want breakfast menus do you, I mean, it's just at our cut off for switching over". Eh, I love breakfast but whatever. We just wanted food. I didn't really care too much what kind of food it was at that point. Lots of tables in the place but we were the only people there. I wasn't sure if I should be happy or scared. But, our waiter was attentive but not overbearing. He kept our water and soda glasses filled. He gave us adequate time to peruse the menu but not so much that we'd be stuck if we needed a question answered. When we slowed down eating her checked on us and got boxes so we could be on our way. It was a perfectly timed meal. My daughter had the pulled bbq pork sandwich special. She really liked it. Ate half there and the rest for a lunch break at work. Hubby had a bacon cheeseburger and fries - he said they hit the spot. I had a burger that had avocado, bacon, cheddar, and mushrooms w/o the bun and fries. It was tasty. Seasoned well, not overcooked, not undercooked. Yummy. I imagine, over the next 2 years that my kid will be attending school at UW I'll end up having another couple meals here. Went here for Easter breakfast/lunch with a group of close friends, and at the end we agreed we should have just stayed home and made our own omelets. It was really overpriced for what you get- $5.50 for mimosas seriously? all of us each got 1 mimosa and 1 omelet, and with tip at the end it was $20. How did one item and one drink turn in to $20??? The omelets were good, but they brought the food out so far apart, it became a joke and almost a game of betting who would be the next to get their food. I mean, we're talking plates coming out 5 min apart. I was the first to get mine luckily haha but I was pretty much finished by the time my last friend got his. I understand we were in a group, but it was only 6 people, and it was awkward when half of us had their food and the others were waiting all wide-eyed and drooling. I also understand it was Easter, but this place was not very busy. We came in for breakfast on a Saturday morning and were sadly very disappointed. My Seattle omelette was decent. The waitress was inattentive and paid so little attention when I placed my order, that it had to be corrected. We also ordered an eggs benedict, and the poached eggs were EXTREMELY overcooked. This is one of my favorite restaurants on The Ave, if not my #1 favorite. I enjoy their all-day breakfast menu and my go-to item is their Garden Skillet, an excellent choice for those who love their vegetables. I've tried the other skillet, the Farmer's Skillet, which is a good choice for meat-lovers. As with all the breakfast menu items that I've ever ordered, I always get asked how I like my eggs (scrambled) and what type of toast I'd like (sourdough). Always hits the spot. The sad thing is I REALLY wanted to like eating here. I've tried going back on numerous separate occasions and every time the food was above mediocre at best, the wait was too long, and the wait staff were apologetic but helpless as what to do to make the situation better. The first time we went Thomas and I split the meal entirely and got an appetizer and an entree. Our waitress gave us a weird look but complied. The spanakopita was delicious and entertaining - but then again it's slightly hard to mess up flaming cheese. When the salmon fettuccine showed up I was slightly dismayed. The pasta had obviously sat out too long and had formed one big pasta lump which dried at the edges. The sauce was good, but my smoked salmon had tons of fish bones in it that made the dish altogether impossible to eat. The second time around we came back for some burgers. Thomas's fell apart on him (a normal cheeseburger), and my chickenburger was nothing more than a chicken breast slapped between two hamburger buns. The third time was breakfast. The wait was abysmal. It took close to 40 minutes to get three omelettes out. And while I felt sorry for the waitress who seemed at a loss of why it was taking so long to get us our food, it didn't change the fact that when our food came out it was near cold. It's not exactly a decently priced meal either with entrees ranging from 12-15 for dinner, and 8-10 for breakfast. read more

I've been eating here for over 7 years and I have to say they have some of the best hummus and pita I've had anywhere. The pita is always soft but slightly crispy but always fluffy. The hummus I could eat with a spoon if the pita wasn't such a great vehicle for it. They also have avgolemono soup. They have changed the recipe over the years and now it has pepper in it. Not sure why they changed--it was wonderful before, but now it's just ok. The coffee was probably Farmer's Brothers or somesuch, you know, with little creamer cups ala Denny's? . As much was expected. I opted for fruit instead of hash, and the cantaloupe was surprisingly tasty. I remember coming here when I was little and eating dinner with my folks and loving it. I've been here twice. The food is good but the service has been bad both times. The first time it was just slow but this time we went in and were told to sit anywhere so we did. The restaurant was fairly empty at the time. We then waited 20+ minutes for anyone to come take out orders. All that time we could see and hear 2 servers having a non work discussion and laughing, which would be fine if there were not people waiting. At the 20 minute point, another customer walked to the server area and told the server that his party as well as us were ready to place our orders. Another 10 minutes and we still had not had our orders taken so we decided to leave. This the server noticed and when told we didn't want to wait any longer just to place an order, he seemed shocked. My friend and I went here a few weeks ago at 7:00 PM and the place was empty, which should have been a sign to leave immediately. We decided to stay and ended up eating their sub par Greek food. Everything was mediocre at best, which isn't the reason for the one star. I paid with credit card and my total was $15. I checked my statement a few days later and they charged my card $32. I called the restaurant and tried to sort it out, but the foreign lady on the other line couldn't help whatsoever. They said "all transactions are final!" I don't know who charged extra- the oaf who served us or the old lady who can't speak English. The point is that even if it was a mistake, they couldn't fix it. This place is just flat-out horrible. When we first walked in we were told by the staff that they were closing the kitchen so we had to hurry up with what we were going to be ordering. We came in the afternoon and they were nowhere near closing time. Literally, the first words that came out of his mouth were to make it quick because they wanted to close. How can an establishment treat its guests with such disrespect and no lack of concern? The place smelt really odd but my boyfriend was hungry so we decided to stay. We got seated and menus were handed to us by the gentleman as he walked back to his counter. We then overheard him speak to our waitress that he has informed us that the kitchen is closing and that they should know what they want to order. She then comes and greets us and again, repeated what he said that we need to hurry up and basically choose something to eat. After giving us 2 minutes she comes back and basically gives us that look saying are you ready or what. That is just the beginning, my boyfriend was disturbed by the lack of customer service and the way they were treating us. We ended up ordering french toast and strawberry nutella crepes. The food eventually came out 5 minutes later and looked disgusting. Utensils were not clean, and we ate with plastic ones. The french toast my boyfriend ordered was undercooked and wasn't edible at all. The "syrup" that was provided was extremely watery and had a weird smell/taste to it. He barely even ate his food at all because it was THAT bad. The strawberry nutella crepes were soggy and also looked unappetizing. I never knew crepes gave you a bad aftertaste like throw up but that was a first. I could've made this myself instead of wasting money to eat here. Furthermore, I'd suggest yall to save yourself and go to a different establishment. From reading the reviews this place is horrible and no good. I love their shrimp linguini and was about to give at least 4 to 4.5 stars till I tasted my garlic bread. It was toasted to perfection, warm, and glistened with buttery goodness! I bit into it and smelled a hint of weed which I attributed to my boyfriend passing by but then I began chewing. My toast tasted like weed butter! Now while I kinda don't mind it but I would have appreciated the heads up! Lol! I also don't think it's ok to serve just anyone marijuana. I had my boyfriend taste it just to be sure. The only reason this place gets two stars is because it's the only place on the Ave where you can get breakfast on the weekends. The service is always spotty, friendly but sometimes slow. And the food is beyond mediocre. Nothing special, normally very bland and just something you choke down because you're craving breakfast foods and don't want to make it yourself. I think the only reason this place is in business is because all the girls wear yoga pants and lacy shirts. Maybe they have a discount with Lulu Lemon or the owners realized the only way they can attract the Frat boy crowd they get is to make their servers flaunt their business. Costa's is one of the best places for breakfast on the ave, possibly the best. Service varies day to day, but is usually polite and prompt. The food is fantastic, and their specials during the week make it fairly affordable for a sit down in Seattle. It's a favorite for brunch on the weekends, and is the perfect place to warm up with some coffee and pancakes before class on those cold winter days. I really like Costas for the food which is how they average out to a 3-starred joint. There's a good variety and the food is consistent. As far as the food, the only disappointment has been the crepes but all of the other items we've tried have been fantastic. Here's the catch, if you're not being served by one of the two more mature women - my best advice is to stand up and leave. Barring that advice my next best advice is don't show up hungry and be prepared to exercise patience. The college students who work there are horrible at their jobs and since they're going to college and expect one day they'll land their dream job -- they have no intention of improving their performance. Take it in stride, the food is worth it if you can stand to wait. Any other place I wouldn't go back and would easily give them one star but if you happen to get that magical morning when you're sat in the section of one of the two matriarchs, it makes it all worth it. Frankly, Costas needs a full staff of these capable and charming women but unfortunately being located in the U-District means you'll more than likely be served by a student who would rather be sleeping. I came here with a friend late one Saturday morning when we really needed wine lunch. It was just one of those weekends. We situated ourselves and scanned the menu and when a very sweet lady came by to see if we wanted coffee and to take our orders, she was very un-rattled by our requests for wine. I asked for a house red and she recommended a greek wine instead, which I found delicious. I had a pasta dish - something with a lot of cheese - and it was exactly what I needed. My friend had a breakfast plate and was also very satisfied. I'm sure that this is not the cheapest or best place to get greek food on the Ave but the atmosphere was very comfortable and relaxing and we couldn't ask for nicer service. Eh. Not to be confused with the one in Fremont which is slightly better. Their lentil soup and the typical lemon/chicken/rice soup is excellent, but that's where it stops. The meat tastes like it's been warmed over and over and the veggies have been cooked to bitterness. Whatever combo my hub got, the meat was oily and incredibly bony (tiny bits of bone too). Gross. We were there on a Saturday night and they had several tables going (but 3 servers available, not counting the ones who looked more like the managers)..and the service was incredibly slow. Food that isn't amazing or special but there when you want it. Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of Greek food. Just never appealed to me. I will be honest, I am not a Greek food connoisseur however I do know good food. I have eaten at this establishment numerous times...mostly when I lived in the U district and less frequently now that I have moved 20 minutes south. Each time I have been here I have always ordered a bowl of their Avgolemono soup. A delicious combination of savory and sour...a chicken soup that is dense and lemony. My husband loves the flavor of their spaghetti as it has that certain "something" that differentiates it from its Italian parents. Portions are substantial and service is friendly. We went here for brunch on a Saturday morning. Thought the place would be packed, and it was, but it only took us a few minutes to get seated. Because it was so busy, we had to wait probably 15-20 minutes before we got to place our order with the waiter, which is fine because we weren't in a hurry and we understood that it was super crowded, but it still annoyed me slightly. I got the "works" omelete and it was pretty satisfying... my boyfriend got the salmon omelete and I liked his more, but he liked mine more so we sort of switched. Overall, it was a cute little restaurant that I enjoyed eating my lunch at. The food was okay, basically nothing special. The hashbrowns could have been crispier, but it was nothing to go tell all my friends about. We will definitely come back, as there are no other brunch places in the area with this price range. I've eaten here several times and the food is always very good for the money. The service, on the other hand...holy crap. Tonight I had an excellent Greek spaghetti, but the server acted like she didn't care if I choked on it. I'd call out the tall blonde woman by name, but she didn't bother to introduce herself. She also never refilled my drink, checked to see how my meal was, or anything else that would constitute basic service etiquette. When I spoke to her, she answered in one word replies and acted as if I'd pissed her off. This is just tonight, mind you...I don't think I've ever had good service here.
