I have Kaiser and my contact lens fitting date was out in late November. I was at Costco and figured I can call and get all the info first. The lady on the phone was very polite and attentive to all my questions. I was pleased and booked an appointment. When I walked in the woman in front was very polite. Got all my info. While I was waiting one of the Dr.'s came and checked in with me if I was helped. Dr. Nguyen followed her after a couple minutes. Checked my eyes with discussed my options for both glasses and contacts. I have astigmatism in one eye and now I needed reading glasses as well along with vision. He was patient. Had me try on contacts and gave me extras to try. I went back to see him for a second time as I was not fully satisfied with my new contacts, so he again very patiently listened to my concerns, fitted me with another set and I was on my way. I found cheaper pricing online and so went back to him again and he gave me prescription for the ones that I wanted. No questions asked but continued to be polite and listened to the concerns. Dr. Nguyen is very patient. Even though I am not Dr. Arii's patient she is always polite. If you are looking for a place for glasses or contact lens and do not want to spend a lot of $$$$, try this place. They hear you out and recommend the best. I used to get my glasses at Costco because of affordability, and was so excited to get new ones. They usually have good options. But the person working at the front desk was SO abruptly rude. She seemed around my age like early to mid 20s. I've had my fair share of rude workers, but I've never had a service worker be so demeaning to the point of tears. Decided to go to Costco for more affordable options, I do not have insurance. Eye exam for prescription glasses is currently $90 and exam for contact lenses currently $135. Called and booked an appt for prescription glasses. Went thru the routinely eye tests before I was seen by Dr Arii, personally for me she was great, quick, and straightforward, as someone who's worn glasses since I was a child understood what I was told. There is a variety of frames, price ranging from what I saw $64 - $400 if not more or less. There are luxury brand named as well as non brand named frames. Staff member was helpful, straightforward, asked if I wanted transition lenses (clear lens turns dark like sunglasses) opted out. There are different levels of how thick the lens can be depending on your prescription, the thinner the lens the price increases, staff member gave me recommendation in regards to that, also offered additional $13 if I wanted to round the corner of the lens so it doesn't protrude out as much from the frame, opted out. Over all, frames I picked out came to about $65, lens came out to about $85 including anti scratch and anti glare which is something I have had to pay additional for each one at my previous optometrist, eye exam $90, total came out to about $240. Costco will contact you when your glasses are ready takes about 7-10 business days. This was a very reasonable and affordable price for me this is the least amount I have ever spent on a pair of glasses I have paid anywhere from $400-$600 for a pair in the past. Rude and unprofessional technician. I placed an order for a prescription pair on a RayBan pair from the limited selection they have and when I came to collect it, I noticed they they do not sit straight on my face. The technician was dismissive about the issue, saying it's because the ears are not symmetric. When I mentioned I have been wearing glasses for over 20 years haven't had this issue with my previous frames, he got condescending, saying he's been wearing glasses for over 50 and only wears high end italian frames and not cheap chinese frames, implying it was my fault for choosing the cheap frames from Costco. It felt that they just wanted me to take the glasses and go away instead of fixing the problem. When I asked what can I do if I am not happy, he said talk to the manager and stormed away. Don't ever get your glasses from here. They gave me mine all crooked and said I couldn't get them replaced unless it was a manufactured or lens problem. HOWEVER, it was their employee that messed up my glasses when she adjusted them. I've tried to return them to get my money back and no luck. Two parts of this review: one for the optometrist, Dr. Manny Nguyen, and second, for the staff members working behind the desk (not the optometrist office, which is separate). Dr. Nguyen was kind and helpful. Was in-and-out in a relatively short time as a walk in appointment. Was a bit businesslike to get through things but was also helpful in answering questions. Price of $75 for an exam is lower than my usual optometrist place, but also a PITA because it showed almost exact same results to my past test. Apparently, most Rx expire within 2 years and they will refuse to make glasses with an expired Rx. It's mostly a law to get people examined more and more money for optometrists, but largely unnecessary for a young adult with stable vision. Now to the bad part. From the word go dealing with staff there was rudeness, anger, and poor communication. I brought my previous prescription and wasn't aware of the whole Rx expiring situation (apparently, this isn't an issue in other countries, but the US puts these rules into place at the behest of optometrist trade groups). A male staff member asked me to explain some notation on the form and I told him I didn't know what it mean. He later accused me of giving a "defensive" response to the question. He also berated me saying "You need a valid prescription!" when I handed him the form I had. I wasn't aware of the expiration issue, but he started to tear into me about how this is the rule, people usually check/know this, etc. I started to feel frustrated and upset at this response, and we started to argue. He seemed pretty short and rude with me simply because I wasn't aware of this rule, and I was obviously frustrated that I may have to go back to my original optometrist for an exam and had wasted a trip. I asked him to explain why this policy or rule is in place, and he kept getting upset at me and told me the conversation was over. He angrily shouted at me "over! over!" and turned his back on me. Later, a female staffer (I think the manager of the department) took over when I was back from my optometric exam next door to pick glasses. They were running a $40 off on a second pair, so I picked 2. She didn't offer any help with the fit or picking a pair, so I was on my own. I looked at the price tags and confirmed an amount for the woman, which she confirmed. Later, that number changed when she rang me up (+$80) because each lenses costs $60. She then claimed "I already told you this," but I, not wanting to argue further, simply said I wasn't aware/hadn't heard her mention that. All she had mentioned was the $40 discount but was then backtracking and claiming that she had quoted me at a lenses charge plus frames. Whatever it is, the dept probably handles a lot of volume with staff members who are not necessarily trained opticians. I imagine this is a stressful situation as the day goes on. That said, it was not pleasant as a customer to run into the short patience of the staff myself. read more

So... I get in 10 minutes before 6, waited for my turn as the guy locked up the frames, and promising to help me pick up my contacts if I wait... Catherine on the other hand, was helping an upset lady about her scratched shades. Catherine was already angry and irritated in what would probably be her last customer of the night, but the customer wanted a refund that Catherine just won't provide for her. So, Catherine having to wait for her manager, turns to me and say "sorry we're closed" I pointed to the guy and said he was going to help me after he locks up. If Catherine had looked pass the customer she was irritated with, she would've seen me waiting for awhile. I wasn't the only one, there was another lady in line with me. Luckily, the gentleman locking up the cabinet let Catherine know that we were there before he locked up. Costco-- please SMILE. $28 for Acuvue Oasis. I chose a Prada eyeglass frame around Christmas time of 2022 and was told it was the last one on display. I took it without fully understanding of it meant (the manager who sold me the eyeglasses did not fully disclose what it means in terms of repairs or replacement, if applicable). Today I came back asking the optical staff to fix it, I was given a lengthy lecture about what it meant the last frame on display and literally what it meant I would need to pay out of pocket to get it repair or replaced. Two optical staff (Erik and Raul) are not only providing little if any assistance but unprofessional and making me feeling regretted for shopping at this Costco Optical center on Automation Parkway in San Jose, CA. Before I walked away, I told one of the two staff that, "this is a very unpleasant experience," and the guy did not say anything. This is for the independent optometry department not the optical department. The Good: Dr. Arii is a good optometrist. Very sweet and articulate over the phone. The Bad: The receptionist is horrible and has almost no communication skills when answering questions. I had a lens fitting exam in Nov. 2013 and it's been over 6 months so their requirement is to have another fitting exam (another $104). Of course I was peeved at this point because it was new information, but every time I would ask the receptionist a question about the policy, she would answer, "Yeah...so...it's been 8 months..." She literally said that 4 times. Looking at the reviews, it seems like this is not the first time that this has happened. Recurring theme? Maybe they should do something about that. Instead of having the requirement posted in different areas of the office (who reads compliances/rules/regulations on walls?), maybe the patient should be given some type of hard document directly. read more

Service is fantastic. As usual, the prices can't be beat. I did lot of hunting and I purchased some frames from Amazon and had them filled by Costco. I have a pretty high prescription which requires high index frames. They quoted me $108 (I think) plus a $25 charge for having my own frames. THIS IS A STEAL. For comparison, I asked Target Optical how much it would cost to fill my lens for a pair of frames I already purchased (they quoted me $300). The service was quick and I was notified via email when the glasses were ready for pickup. My one tiny complaint is that the girl who adjusted my frames didn't put anything over the side of my glasses and burnt off a little bit of the brand. I can live with it though. read more

This review is meant for the quality of their lenses. Cheap frames and lenses for sure, but if want glasses that constantly have a greasy film on them, get these. I don't know if it's even worth it with all the spray & wipes you have to constantly have on hand. Initially, I thought it was just me.. glasses always smudged, foggy to see through... alcohol is really the only thing that cleans them off for a while. Once you try and wipe, they just get worse. Turns out my mom thought she was just greasy too. We just happened to complain about how annoying the glasses were and the similarities were too close. I'm not sure why the lenses just smudge and smear, maybe the cheap material. I wouldn't recommend lenses from here, it's just too annoying to bear! read more

From what I know, the optometrists that work here are part of the Indepedent Doctors Optometry group, and they don't accept insurance. The glasses/contacts are purchased through Costco, and they do accept insurance. I've been going from optometrist to optometrist for a while. I came here on my dad and sister's recommendation for an eye exam. Dr. Miako Ari was really nice and helpful during the whole examination. She talked me through the whole exam, explaining everything that she was doing. She also listened to some concerns I had about some discomfort in my right eye. I've been experiencing some discomfort and one instance of cloudy vision, and she diagnosed the problem as dry eyes. I received samples of eye drops to test out. I'll be coming back to do a dilation of my eyes, and to get new frames/lenses. read more

Definitely recommend this place for a contact and glasses prescription! Naomi at the front desk was so thoughtful and sweet, she even noticed which contact solution I reached for when I removed my contacts and she gave me a bottle of that as well, as the doctor's preferred type! I have different prescriptions for my eyes so she also went out of her way to label each trial lens so I wouldn't get confused and she included coupons, extra lens case, and she took time out to explain everything to me thoroughly, including my glasses and contact prescription. :) I was thoroughly impressed with her kindness and consideration! Dr. Arri was very polite, detailed, and knowledgeable. She was even familiar with a special condition I have that usually most doctors have never even heard about. I love costco for quality affordable products. The glasses are a different matter though. I cannot be very sure but I think the technicians in the optical department are not qualified. I ordered pair and another one using the 40 dollar off about an year and half ago. The fit was an issue on both needing adjustment frequently. The people working to adjust the fit keep making things worse. I ordered another pair using the 30 off deal about 6 months ago. I encountered the same issue with fit with Costco optical making things worse with one even breaking my glass and blaming it on me I have been wearing glasses for about 25 years. Very slow. I came 45 mins before they closed at that time the number was 77. And I was number 92. I went shopping bought all of my items and still have to wait after store hours. The person at the desk literally was slow, taking her time explaining everything to the clients, was talking and joking around with children while people were waiting. They should schedule people better, because one girl said she was off and left, where as she could have stayed overtime for 30 mins. The optical girls r great, always busy there so u have to pic a number for them to call u for service but they got some wonderful frames there. It does take about a week for frames to be ordered but i guess its ok to wait for the order bc i ordered online n they made them wrong. It was a hassle for me to return them online. The employees are really helpful & answer all your questions! Bring in your own frames for $18 fee (not bad). Seems like Costco is the cheapest place around- they may not offer a ton of options but for regular lenses it is perfect. My lenses were $130 (High Index & Anti-Reflective Coating + Polish & $18 fee). And I purchased my designer glasses from another place for $100. Not bad for everything!! read more

We have came to this place for new glasses for so many years. But this time Costco have failed on me so bad. After my daughter got her glass, she complain it made her headache. So we went the the glass department to complain... As first, they said the measurement is off. They will adjust and make a new one. The next day, they called me back and said is correct.!! Ok, they tell me go see the doctor. We went back to see doctor ( Costco) . She said everything is fine, and told the receptionist to adjust the frame because the middle is kind of off. When I have a chance to look at it after she got home, the glass is all stuck, can not close nor open. I was going to go back to complain, but the whole frame fall apart!!! Dr. Miako Arii was the doctor at the time of my walk-in and she was amazing! Her receptionist was out due to an emergency, so she was running the entire office alone. I needed an eye exam and there was only less than 15 mins before her next appointment but she was happy to rush me through the exam and squeeze me in before the next person arrive. She was so nice and helpful throughout the exam! Excellent customer service! She impressively juggled conducting eye exams, answering questions and filling out prescriptions timely. Once again this place is the definition of inefficiency. Wasted a whole hour with 4 people being processed. Don't come around 6 to 7 pm. It's a bloody purgatory listening to people who don't understand that last pair of sunglasses means last pair. Day 2. Getting closer to hell Three optical employees chatting for a good 5 min. Great place to get your eye exam! Called in and they were able to fit my mom and I for a same day appt. Score! I would of never thought to come to Costco to get an eye exam and glasses until my bro recommended me to come here considering how cheap the prices were and how excellent the quality was. Upon walking into Costco, you go straight towards the left and you'll see the optical section right by the photo section. Go through these sliding doors and you enter the optometrist side where the eye exams take place. There's a little seating area where they have you fill out paperwork. I met with dr. Arii and she was able to bring me in pretty quickly! She is super nice and professional and I definitely feel at ease and comfort while she was doing my exam. Total cost for me since I did a contact lens exam was $104. Also it's a bit more because I have special lenses. And they don't accept insurance. For glasses only was a little cheaper like around $54 I believe. You get your prescription for glasses right away so I was able to go to the optical side and pick out the many frames they had available. Prices ranging from 60-150ish. Not bad at all! I was able to pick out several cute frames around 100-130ish. They had a deal going on too, buy one frame get $30 off the second frame. Must be for the same individual though. I purchased the special high definition lens which are supposed to be lighter for $104 otherwise the regular ones are $74. They basically charge you for the lens and frames. Once the associate fits you for your glasses, they will give you a call when the glasses are ready for pickup .. Anywhere between 7-14 days. Can't wait to pick up my new glasses!! read more

Extremely understaffed, rude, and a sense of slight racism. I am Asian-American and one of the lovely female workers here just could not stop giving me attitude when all I asked was for simple help. This employee could've easily said please wait and give me a minute. Instead she turns on her rudeness switch and gave me a very hard time. There was a Caucasian male and female behind me in line and the worker decided to help them instead of me when she KNEW I was next. I've never had such a bad experience at Costco before. Management please give your "Optometry" department a full reality check. This Costco optometry deserves no customers. Save yourself the trouble and go to Walmart instead! Unprofessional.
