I locked my keys in my car thinking I didn't have my spare keys in my possession (in the process of moving). They came within 1/2 hour and charged $50. It did take them quite a few attempts for them to unlock my Ford Focus, which I would think would be a rather basic car to get into. Overall, I'm very satisfied with their service. read more

I went to Cothron's (Burnet St location) today (11/6/14,..around 10:am) to have two simple car keys made. I provided the blanks. "Roy" at Cothron's explained that since I provided the blanks, the price would be higher ($6.00 per key, $12.00 total). But, "if Cothron's provided the blanks, the cost would be about half that amount" Roy explained. I questioned this backwards policy but he held to it. Yes, I could have purchased the generic blanks but I needed these keys cut on GM (General Motors) blanks that, again, I provided. I should have walked out but being in a hurry. I paid in cash, $12.99 total, to have two simple car keys cut. Highway robbery. I've been doing business with Cothron's for decades but never again. read more

I went to the location on I35 and 4th since I was running through town, so I figured I would stop in there to get some keys duplicated. The older gentleman who helped me stated he was not sure if they had the keys since the brand my keys were made were different from the ones they had. I figured that, but isn't that the reason I went in, I just need a duplicate. But, after that short banter, he found the key and made my copy within minutes and I was out the door. read more

These guys aren't the brightest bunch. They kept promising to call and come by to unlock my car, never called black, never showed. I called them 3 times, and they wasted 3 hours of my time because they eventually admitted that they "didn't know my phone number". This isn't really a review for Cothron's, but it sorta is. Last night, at 8:30pm I was standing in Home Depot (for the second time), holding our front door lockset up to multiple boxes of Kwikset locksets, trying to find one that would match in size and placement of screw holes. I was having no luck and getting increasingly frustrated. I had spent 1.5 hours the night before taking apart our loose and wobbly lockset, putting it back together and trying to get it mounted on the door. I had finally given up and was ready to buy a new one. As I was standing there, not sure what to do, a youngish, bald gentleman with glasses walks up to me and asks if I needed any help. I saw immediately that he wasn't a Home Depot employee, so I told him that I doubted he would be able to help... and I explained my situation. He then told me that he worked for Cothron's, and said, "Let me guess. These two screws keep coming loose." And he pointed to the exact problem that I had been having multiple times over the past 6 years. I was, like, "Yes!" He asked if he could see my lockset, and I explained to him that in spite of the fact that I had rebuilt it several times in the past, this time I just wasn't able to get it flush to the door. He goes, "Let's go find a screwdriver." Two aisles over, he takes the whole thing apart in about 10 seconds, and shows me how I had actually put a piece in upside down. Next thing I know, he's rebuilt the lockset for me and tells me that all he thinks I should do is buy a tube of Locktite (the red, not the blue). He also informs me that I seem to be missing a spring. I was sure that it had fallen out at home, but he told me that he could go check his van, that he probably had one. I told him that no, I was sure I could find it...he had already done enough! He introduced himself as Josh. When I profusely thanked him, and joked about how he probably just thought he was making a quick Home Depot trip, but ended up helping some lunatic in the lock aisle, he laughed and said that with what he does, he's always on the job. Did I use Cothron's? No. But, thanks to the attitude and helpfulness of this Cothron's employee, if I ever need any kind of lock repair, I will absolutely call Cothron's. read more

Went to cothron's to get a safe for the second location of my business. Thought it would be easy, I just wanted to order the exact same safe I had for the first one. Not easy, because they do not keep records even though it was only a year ago we purchased the first one. Fine, got the info off the safe myself and even took a picture of the model number so there would be no confusion. The location at 51st said they didn't have it but they called the central location and they did. Good. Not so good, even with the model number they delivered the correct brand with the wrong model number, the safe was too short. Then one of the employees there said, what's the big deal, why don't I just buy the one on they had on the displayed on counter which seemed to be the same size as the one I wanted. Anyway that is what I ended up doing because they said they don't have the one I want in stock anymore. Ok, fine. So I need it delivered and installed (bolted to the floor) When the installers came they try to bolt it but the bolt broke half way down as they were installing and they told me even if it was bolted all they way someone could still pry it up. Ok so what's the point of bolting? Ok, fine, I have a safe,that is what I wanted. Now a week goes by and I get a call from someone at Cothron's to check on my experience. This was good, I explained my experience and got an apology and was told the owner would call me the next day too to hear my story. Never called, tried calling back the lady who called 4 times, voicemail only and the mailbox was full. Oh, it gets better, we open our store and start to use the safe and the safe doesn't fit our drawers like the one we have at our first location so the $500 for the safe and $70 for installation was for nothing. I am not a safe expert that is is why I went to Cothron's Safe. (Even though the exterior of the safe is the same size as what we had, the interior is not.) This is why I just wanted another one of what I already had. I will never go back to cothron's and I will keep telling everyone this story and advise them not to go there. read more

I had a great experience! I needed a transponder key made and my keyless remotes programmed. Mike make my key and then after trying to program my key fobs found out my car wasn't born with keyless entry so I would have to get it added. He even called a local dealership and a local custom alarm shop that specializes in car electronics to make sure he couldn't do more for me. The price was very reasonable to have the key made and programmed and I wasn't charged for any of the extra time it took. I was very happy and I recommend Cothron's Safe and Lock. read more

I have a 15yr old car that the key would not unlock the door. I went to the dealer and at first they said it would be $400 for a new ignition key. Then they said they could not help me (weird! I know?). So I called Cothron's. They told me to bring it over and they would take a look. Mike and Joe both worked on it for about 45 minutes trying to lubricate inside the lock before they decided it would have to be taken apart. Because it was nearly closing time, I opted to leave the car overnight. The next day, Mike had removed the lock cylinder and replaced a couple of the pieces inside the cylinder and cleaned it all up. It works great now! Cost me a reasonable $135 for what was several hours of work. Great job and thanks again! read more

Bought some keys with transponders for my car on Ebay and went to Cothron's to get them cut. I was informed when I got there that since I bought them online and not from Cothron's it would cost $6 a key to cut them. But if I had bought the keys there it would only have cost me $5.25 per key. That is extremely unreasonable and is trying to force the customer to purchase keys at their location. The older gentleman who helped me and cut the keys was very nice and very helpful. But the man he asked about my keys when I came in was very abrupt and not at all pleasant. I was not going to go back there again. But After receiving a thoughtful message from one of the managers I will reconsider that and am upgrading them from two to three stars. It is very rare to get a response like that and get it so quickly. And usually if you do it is not very pleasant. Kudos on the fast response, it helps a lot that Cothron's is that customer service oriented! read more

This review is for making keys at Cothron's Safe and Lock on Burnet Road. I wanted to avoid the big box key makers because my experience with big box keys are poor. My confidence with Cothron's downtown a few years ago gave me 100% confidence that they could make very important keys and I'll spend my cash locally. Oh, my, there is a 100% confidence note and only 1 star? The key maker did not read my order and told me he did not read the order. Obviously, he DID read my order because he knew how many keys I wanted to make of each master key and got the number of keys correct. Out of 6 key masters I had 7 keys made. The order went in late/mid day on 8/13 and picked up mid day on 8/14 (they were not done and I had to wait a short 15 minutes). The order was as follows- two small sheets of paper with my name and phone number on each page as well as number of keys total. 6 keys labeled with masking tape and taped onto an order/paper with three lines next to each key: first line item- name of key (matches labeled key taped next to it), line two- number of keys to make, line number three- description of the key ordered (standard silver plain, standard black, green color, standard plain silver, standard plain silver, standard plain silver). When the keys were not completely cut, I said- "Oh it is the green key, isn't it?"- looking at the display with a green key on the counter to my right, their left. They said that the day before, they were slammed. They must have been really busy. Everyone was working, no slacking and they do have a good reputation with lots of locations. The reason they receive only ONE star from me is because they only got one key correct for color (and that one isn't cut properly) and I'll give them an okay for a silver ignition over a standard black ignition. The balance of the keys are gold tone color. (Six wrong colors and one wrong cut key) The green color key? Well, the key master didn't read the words GREEN COLOR key and cut it in gold. They refunded the value of that key with some unpleasant words that they just get what "they" send us and admitted to not reading the words. What could have gotten them 5 stars? 100% satisfaction? An excellent word of mouth review? Gloriousness on Yelp? Read the order. If you don't have a green key, a standard silver plain key or a black ignition key, or even a sparkle/light/rainbow key then please don't make them in whatever blank you want... Tell the customer when they come in on day one- "Oh, I see here that you want a..." we can't fulfill that order but we can cut a gold tone key. Option 2- read the order as you cut the keys and call the customer when the request can't be filled (the phone number is at the top of the page), Option 3- Good guys do not always finish last, apologize. The guy wasn't a D*ck but was kind of snippy. He might have just been tired or had a bad day, which came through in the look he gave me- giving me the snippy vibe. My color preference is important to me. Get it? The key that was not cut right was a two sided $ 4.25 key pre tax. The green key, you ask? I took it to a really nice key cutter at the local big box and purchased a green key. Not a key master, a key cutter, someone who was friendly and nice and didn't have to read. read more

Had a great experience today with Cothron's. In one of my cars, it had become impossible to turn the key in the ignition. I called a local Toyota specialist and they recommended Cothron's. I had a good experience with them before on a Yukon cargo door lock but was not aware that they repaired ignition cylinders. So I called Cothron's and had no trouble setting an appointment with Becca. A couple of days later Juan came out to my location and had my ignition switch removed, repaired and reinstalled in just under an hour, what great service! Thank you once again! read more

This place is a awesome gem hidden away in Austin. I called to see if they could duplicate a smaller key for my storage closet in my garage and they said it shouldn't be a problem. So I was kinda skeptical because I didn't get a straight yes or no (I'm a very black and white person so I tend to read in between the lines a lot). Rest assured that when I got there there was no wait in line, and within one minute they had made the key and I was out of there. They have old school customer service where they value their customers, you don't find this often anymore. So if you're in need of a special kind of key or a key in general this is the place to go to. read more

Cothrons on Burnett rd. I needed a break away bolt broken off & didn't have the tool. When I walked in the girl behind the desk gave me a I don't want to help you look. Then when we spoke to the locksmith he quoted us $180 for 2 hrs of work. He wouldn't even let me explain what needed to be done & just kept talking over me. He gruffly told me he wouldn't be able to get to it in that same day, because it was too late in the day (it was only 11 am.) So we decided to go buy the tool & do it ourselves, because of the terrible service. The tool itself was fairly inexpensive, & IT ONLY TOOK 20 mns. for an unskilled amateur like me to do. It is clear that they saw me as a person they could take advantage of & tried to charge me for an extra 1:40 . The experience reminded me of a dishonest mechanic trying to take me for as much as he could because he was betting on me not knowing any better. I broke a key off in a cable lock and took it into Cothron's to see if they could extract the key and make a new one. Unfortunately I did not ask for an estimate of cost and that is my fault. They did successfully extract the broken key while I waited, however, they charged me more than it would have cost to purchase a new one at Lowe's. Again, I acknowlege that I am to blame because I did not ask what the charge would be, but I feel they should have given me at least an estimate of cost before they did the work. I will not go back to this store again, and can not recommend it to others. read more

Saturday, August 13 began with a broken front door handle set to our home. I took the lockset to Cothron's on 8225 Burnet Road for help. Joseph and Paul were there to help and help they did. Not only to give advise but they went to the trouble to find an exact match to my twelve year old lockset. They keyed the lock to my original key and provided an additional key for future key needs.
