I usually only write good reviews because I know it's hard to be a small business owner. But this has been ridiculous, and I didn't want others to have the same experience. I came in to get copies of my car key (with fob) and house key. They had to send away for the car key, but gave me the house keys that day. They didn't work, at all. Came back and they replaced them and while the new ones do work, they're pretty stiff in the lock even though the original key wasn't. When the copy of the car key came in, I came back, and it took them about 15 minutes to find it. And it didn't work either. I'm cancelling the order, but apparently they can't just issue a refund - I need to wait for the manager to call me, and then refunds are issued by check (!). I've sunk a fair amount of time and money into this, and all I currently have is two house keys that only kind of work. Really hoping it gets resolved soon. UPDATE: I increased the rating to 3 stars because they sent someone to my home for free to get the keys working better. Their technician was very helpful and professional. They also said I will be receiving a refund for the Subaru key via credit card. I will say all the employees were very nice. read more

This isn't a good place to visit for key FOBs and remote start issues, and that's what this review is based on. I visited thrice and each time I was told different things. 1. We can get your key fob but it'll take 2 weeks. 2. We can't get your key fob, but if you buy a matching fob elsewhere we will only charge you to program it. 3. Even though you got your own matching key fob, we can't guarantee it'll work but you'll still get charged for programming no matter what. I can't find a reason to agree to a 3-digit programming fee whether it works or not. I was very disappointed with my whole experience, but I can say Kevin on the commercial side is great. The best locksmith I've worked with in 15 years of facilities maintenance. read more

Went to Cothrons on the 10th of December and ask if they could talke out a key that had broken off inside. I clerk said yes, and I left it with him. He calls me a couple of hours later telling me I need a new ignition lock for my vehicle. I told him I'd pick it up. He thens calls me back within the hour saying he could fix it and put waffers back after taking out my key. I told him I needed to do it as cheap as possibe and he charged me $58 for doing so. Then he told me that my keys were bad and I needed new key that came to another 39.90. Then he puts a charge of "Standard Auto Key by Code" which I don't know what that it for an additional $45. After I paid he gives me the invoice and he added on a "Convenience Fee" of $5. What the hell was this of adding on additonal fees. I explained to the clerk that I didn't have alot of money to spend but I did need by ignition to work. I walked out with a $160.10 Bill. This was for: 1. Take out broken key 2. 2 new keys and have transponder swaped to the new keys This was $160.10 I felt that additonal fees were just added on to make me pay as much as possible. I needed new locks - had them come out to measure - months go by - no follow up - no one returns calls - I've called three times asking when I'll receive the locks and I get the same answer "the tech will call you back We're so sorry" - Don't bother wasting your time! We were having a bit of an emergency, and the attendant on the phone could not have been nicer. She listened to my whole crazy story and immediately began seeing which technician was closest and could help us the fastest. And it was FAST. Less than 30 minutes. The technician was extremely professional in his first-impression appearance and had us into our house to tend to our emergency in less than 10 minutes. Less than 10 minutes! Good Samaritans stepping up in our communities. We are over on Felicity lane where we lost power Monday morning, my neighbor who is on oxygen and only had couple hours left on battery was in a panic. As my roomate and I where trying to figure how to run power from my truck into the house to charge and keep her oxygen machine running Xavier-Tony pulled his Cothron's work van I front of the house and ran power for 72hrs to keep enough power for her to keep oxygen flowing. I bought a smart lock with a keypad and keyhole and wanted to get it rekeyed for my home key to work with it. Not only was the locksmith friendly, but he was fast and fair priced! I'll definitely come back for future lock needs. They're walk-in only and the parking lot is a bit limited so I'd recommend going early or during non-peak hours. read more

Cothron's mobile service came to my home today to unlock an antique safe (approximately 100 years old) that was damaged while moving. The two technicians drilled the safe and then repaired what was wrong with the mechanism. In addition to opening and repairing the lock they cleaned and lubricated the locking mechanism. It was a very interesting process and they were able to not only regain access to the safe, but also preserve the function of a family heirloom. On top of everything else, the two technicians were also very friendly and courteous. read more

I came here on a recommendation The outstanding customer service at this location made the task of replacing a key a true pleasure. I called ahead to ask a couple of questions before stopping in. I spoke with Sam on the phone, who was knowledgable and very friendly. Then, when I came into the store, I had to pleasure of being helped by Stephen, who was equally friendly and delivered great customer service. My experience was positive in every way. I hope every location of Cothron's has such quality service, because that's truly remarkable. The prices seemed competitive and I really appreciated that I didn't feel like someone was trying to sell me something I didn't need. They were very effective with their time management as well, helping multiple customers in a timely manner while still attentive to details. I had a gate lock fall apart and was looking for a replacement handle and lock. I took the old mechanism to Cothron's on Burnet Rd. as I was up north for an appointment. When I showed the lock mechanism to the young man behind the counter (sorry no name tag that I could make out), he took it as a personal challenge to repair the old lock rather than provide a replacement. I had tried unsuccessfully to repair it myself but with a better skillset and knowledge base (and possible better tools) he managed not only to get it repaired but he also burnished up the mechanism so it looked almost new. When I asked for the price, he said he was happy to fix it - no charge. Anyway, I've found a place for all my future lock and security needs. read more

I left messages at two locksmiths over the weekend. Neither returned my call. Two others quoted me $200 and $225 to make a new key for my truck. This was an onsite service. Both said my key had a chip. I told them both it did not. I pulled the door lock out of the door since there was only one key for door and ignition. They stated they couldn't make an ignition key from the door lock. One of them said he could do a chipless key from the VIN for $140. I took it in to Cothron's on Burnet Rd. I explained the issue and was asked if I could leave it. Marcus called me a couple hours later and said he had made a key and asked me to try it. I had him make several others, with a different cut, in case the first one didn't work. One of them did work for the ignition. Marcus was more than fair with the price. Money has been tight this year and I really appreciated his help. Eight years ago, I took a whole door and frame in to have a key made for it. Similar experience. read more

Dear god, why didn't I a locksmith sooner?! Cothron's is super close to where I live (arboretum), and has super cheap prices (for copying keys anyways). I've been wanting to get my Kia car key copied for a while now, since I have only one key that works and I don't have power locks or an alarm, meaning... if I lock myself out of my car, I'm pretty much screwed. Luckily, I called Cothron's and asked if they could copy my key since I went to Lowe's and Home Depot and they couldn't do it since the car key I had was bigger than what most places have in stock, and they told me they could do it! I asked how much and they said $4 something! Holy crap, $4.75 for a car key + tax?! That's AWESOME! I drove down to the one on Burnet and within 15-20 minutes my key was pretty and awesome, the guy even let me test it on my car to make sure it worked, as in opened my door and started my car (I had previously gotten one made and it opened my door but didn't start my car..., I guess that's a good key too since if I probably locked myself out, I'd just need something to unlock the door). Anyway, the final total came down to $5.14 and I walked out the door with a second key and a happier customer! YAY! Thanks for the professional and awesome service! read more
