This COTIJAS is in the Stumps Family Marketplace, plenty of parking and mostly and local clientele that stayed consistent while I was there. Staff was very pleasant and they had the typical music playing which can feel cliche and natural at the same time. Good inside dining area with counter seating and an outdoor patio with several tables. Good self serve soda fountain and salsa bar with 4 options, all of which are good. Today I went with the California Surfin Burrito. Right after I ordered I turned around to see that in 2006 it was the best burrito in San Diego. Great! Worth a shot! The burrito was thick, like both hands around the waist thick. Tortilla was nicely toasted but not brittle. Inside you're immediately hit with the shrimp and chipotle cream. Honestly I had to navigate some bites to avoid it in order to acknowledge the asada and guacamole inside. Flavors were all great, fries were crispy, but though good, the chipotle cream dominated the palate. Shrimp were definitely plentiful and popped nicely with the burst of flavor seafood lovers look for. Came with a few chips on the side which were enough for a break in texture. So overall Staff: 5 stars, clean, polite, accommodating Ambience: 5 stars, much different than the few COTIJAS I've had in the IE, more inviting to stop by and stay a minute. Food: 4 stars, the burrito is a decent value, asada and shrimp at a sub $20 price in SD is good. This is very creamy chipotle and shrimp forward, so the balance wasn't as refined as some of the other surf and turf style burritos I've had. But still a good burrito,I'm definitely coming back to try another burrito, probably breakfast as their breakfast burrito selection looks pretty great. read more

I saw someone trying this place on social media and was intrigued. As part of my quest to find the best breakfast burrito in San Diego, I found myself here on a Saturday morning, ordering the hash brown breakfast burrito (most popular breakfast burrito on their menu). I was impressed! Although I brought the burrito home and ate it 30-40 minutes later, it was still warm. Hash browns were not mushy. Sausage and bacon made it a savory deliciousness. The burrito itself was a little soggy, but I couldn't tell whether it was because I didn't eat it right away or because it was naturally that way. There's a salsa bar on-site; I tried the cilantro sauce, green, and red sauces. I loved the cilantro sauce the most! It was creamy and complemented my burrito well. Parking: Easy. Located in a big lot. Inside: Clean, lots of tables to sit and enjoy the food Service: Friendly, efficient. I've been going to this place are about 40 years. Needless to say it's probably my favorite taco shop in town. Although I think you can find a better cardio side burrito elsewhere, I am a big fan of the Diablo burrito and the bean and cheese burrito. They do have good seating and it's a fairly comfortable space. They are well staffed, and the service is usually pretty good. My faves: carne asada street tacos (guac on the side), rolled tacos (beef or chicken), hard shell beef taco, carne asada fries (no beans). I like to add pico to my carne asada fries but for it to be a $1 extra is kinda crazy. I also like their churros but eat them right then and there. Service is great and quick. Plenty of free parking. I usually call ahead to place a to go order. Things I wish they improved: someone continually cleaning and refilling the salsa bar. It gets dirty and empty super fast. Also wish they had a line for pick up orders because sometimes the line is super long and you still have to wait in line with the other people that haven't ordered yet and of course they take forever and don't know what they want once they get up the the cash register. I'm really unhappy with the service. I ordered a Diablo Shrimp Burrito to go which has rice in it. Instead I got some shrimp burrito with just pico de gallo in it. It wasn't even busy in the shop. How could the chef mess that up or the server not check to make sure I got the right order. I couldn't even eat it, cause I hate pico. So, I lost money and got ripped off. This is a local shop that is very close by a few friends, but for whatever reason I had never tried it. As a former San Diego resident that now lives in the Bay Area, I jones for the old school rolled tacos and gauc and carne asada burritos, which you cannot get in the Bay Area. While Bay area is sold, SD taco shops are my favorite. I tend to go for the To's (Roberts, Albertos, Albertos, etc.) but since it was right by my friends house gave this a try. For comparison, I had Roberts in Del Mar the day before, and overall this was much better. The rolled tacos no question these were far better with great amount of guac and more lettuce, and cheese. The carne asada was also better, less grizzly, and overall just better. Unfortunately I don't get to San Diego often enough to try the full menu and try many other items, but when I am back I will for sure hit this taco shop! read more

I went to a Christmas concert at the nearby Point Loma Presbyterian Church and and I stopped by for a quick taco with my friend after the concert. I ordered the Carne Asada soft taco with guacamole and it was so huge and it came with a double tortilla so I made actually two tacos out of it, and I managed to eat the whole thing even though it was almost enough for two meals. My friend had the three rolled chicken tacos with guacamole covered with lettuce and tomatoes, and they also have a wonderful salsa bar and I love the cilantro salsa they make. my order was only seven dollars and my friend's was only six dollars and it was so delicious. This is an old Point Loma taco shop that everyone loves so come by and try it. You won't be dismayed. My taco was done in five minutes or less, even though they had a busy crowd, and the place is very clean and tidy. There's a key for the bathroom and it was clean and well stocked. read more

The hash brown burrito was small and the components were not well distributed inside. Extremely salty, clumps of bacon and all the sausage links were on one half of the burrito. Hash browns were lacking and not crispy. The best part was the quality of the tortilla, but with such little filling it was just way too much plain tortilla folded on itself. Although there are 4 salsas ranging from mild to hot, the hottest is super mild and none of them are flavorful. There are hundreds of better taco shops in the city, and even Ortiz's is better and they're right around the corner in the next plaza. For a good hash browns burrito, I would recommend El Rey Moro. read more

A mutual friend recommended this place, and I was glad we stopped here for dinner. The burritos here are massive and even shareable if you're not too hungry. I had the California burrito ($12.85) with carne asada. It included fries, cheese, pico de gallo, guacamole, and chips on the side. For the amount of food you get, the price is competitive. The burrito's ingredients were solid, but I think the fries inside could've been more crispy. They also had a salsa bar next to the ordering counter. My favorite was the cilantro salsa, which was a little creamy. When we went for dinner, the restaurant was almost empty. We ordered right away, and we got our food fairly quickly. We had heard a lot about their hash brown breakfast burritos and made sure to try that, and also got a po-keto omelet with bacon (evidently this meant no potatoes). The burrito was pretty good, but not amazing. It's definitely big, but not massive the way some reviews would have you believe. On the inside, there's plenty of tasty fillings, and the hash brown adds a great crispy texture. We tried all of their salsas. They definitely improved the burrito, but I don't really agree with other reviews suggesting the salsas are incredible. The omelet was filled with bacon and was a little too salty, but otherwise flavorful and topped with a few nice slices of avocado. Look, this place is cheap, and the food is undeniably tasty. Plus, there's plenty of seating and parking, which is honestly an underrated convenience. I just didn't feel wowed enough to give it more stars. read more

I decided to try the fish burrito as it's my favorite type of burrito to order at Mexican joints like this. The fish burrito was great, it had a lot of flavor, and I absolutely loved that they had the salsa bar where you could grab as much salsa as you wanted. The only thing I didn't like was the Horchata. It wasnt creamy, or tasted of cinnamon and didn't taste like a typical Horchata that I've had many times before. Something about it seemed really off. I probably wouldn't purchase again. Longtime customer lost today. Picked up a breakfast burrito to go w/ eggs, beans, guacamole & hashbrowns. When I got home with it, come to find out there's bacon instead of the beans. That's fine... it happens. So I call to let them know and hop right back in the car to go get the right order and genuinely didn't even think it'd be necessary to grab the burrito to bring back as "proof" of the mistake. Both women at the front refuse to make the order correctly without seeing the other burrito and sent me on my way with accusations of making the whole story up just to score some free burritos with the help of the awesome customer who was in line overhearing the whole (very mellow and respectful) conversation. This was my second time here, last time I was in San Diego someone recommended this place and it was delicious. So on this trip I knew exactly where I wanted to grab a really good bite to eat. Walking in it's a very simple set up. The menus are above the register and once you figure out what you want you place your order and wait for your number to be called. We both got the surf and turf burrito. After placing our order the food came out pretty fast. It became obvious that we had picked a perfect window of time to come in because the place got super busy shortly afterwards. The burritos came out nice and hot. The shrimp was well cooked in it and so was the carne asada. It also had rice, pico and white sauce. The flavors all go together really nicely. Nothing was overpowering. Their portion sizes are big so come hungry. I was only able to eat half my burrito before getting full but the leftovers are really good. One nice thing they offer is the salsa bar with four different types of salsas, cilantro sauce, red sauce, green sauce and, habanero. Each sauce had great flavor and were great compliments to the burrito. This is definitely a place that I will return to. The food is great and the service is fast and friendly. Cotijas is like the McDonalds of Mexican food out here in San Diego. This franchise absolutely dominates. Cotijas is super nearby work so we stop in quite often for our lunch needs. This restaurant has stayed consistent with quality and products for the last 6 months and I'm blown away. Their service is quick, especially during the lunch rush. Their facility is extremely clean and always inviting. This is one of the cleanest Cotijas I've been in. Their salsa bar is cleaner than most and always stocked. That cilantro salsa is amazing and I could literally drink it. You can make your own burritos and end up with a cheaper burrito than those listed on the menu board. Their cheese quesadillas are super simple but they keep simplicity poppin. I fully suggest their protein bowls, it's basically the contents of two burritos for the price of one. I usually love coming to Cotija's, but unfortunately, my experience today was very disappointing. I called in an order for three California burritos with sour cream--one of them without pico de gallo. When I arrived to pick up my order, the cashier, Sofia, told me there were four burritos: three with sour cream and one without pico. I explained that I only ordered three, and rather than working with me to clarify the situation, she immediately insisted I was wrong and claimed she had taken the order correctly over the phone. There was no attempt to understand or empathize--just a firm and dismissive "No, you're wrong." At most restaurants, a misunderstanding like this would be handled respectfully and corrected. Instead, she doubled down and tried to charge me for four burritos. When I repeated that I only needed three, she went to the kitchen, came back, and told me they'd have to take back the one without pico since they could "still sell it"--even though there were no other customers in the restaurant. At that point, I gave up trying to reason and just paid for the three burritos, even though the one I originally wanted (without pico) was the one being taken away. Sofia's attitude was not only rude and condescending toward me but also dismissive of the customer behind me, who was struggling to communicate in English.
