The first thing I want to say is that this review is based 100% on the food and not the service. Ordered a machaca breakfast burrito and the meat was RANCID. Not just off, but smelled like death bad. They did refund us for the entire bill (after we asked) which is appreciated but the quality control there is OFF. The fact that the cooks in the back failed to notice the smell of death while cooking the meat is really concerning. We didn't touch any of our food after that and will never be back. Also something to note is I have never left a bad review at a restaurant before this. It takes a lot for me to write a review especially a bad one read more

I have to say that given its location along busy Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach, Areli's Taco Shop has some pretty excellent Mexican food. Prices are fair and the parking is easy (at least it was on Sunday afternoon), so what's not to love! This was my first visit, but other respected Yelp elites had recommended this place, so I wanted to give it a try. I ordered two shrimp tacos, which were tasty and surprisingly filling. My bride ordered rolled tacos, which were very flavorful and a very good value at $4.99 for three. The staff was nice and even gave me an extra corn tortilla so that we wouldn't leave any of the yummy toppings on the plate. Give this place a try. You won't be disappointed! read more

I am very surprised by all of the excellent reviews after eating my food from Areli's. I chose this spot over all of the others in the area due to the reviews and I was greatly let down. This was hands down the worst California burrito I've ever had. It was about 85% old, stale, dry French fries and the very few small pieces of carne asada were either almost entirely veins of fat or so old and dry that they were more like jerky than carne asada. None of the 4 people with me were able to eat more than one bite of this terrible burrito. Unfortunately this was $12.50 into the trash and I'll have to buy something else to eat pretty soon because the few bites I was able to choke down won't hold me over for long. Not sure what I did in a past life to piss off Areli but she clearly does not like me. read more

Areli's is now in the Ortiz Taco Shop location. I stopped in for breakfast and ordered one of my favorites, the ham, egg, and cheese burrito with red salsa on the side. The burrito was $7 and some change. One thing I believe a great burrito should always have is a great flour tortilla. The flour tortillas they use here are excellent. They taste great have that nice buttery texture. The breakfast burrito came generously filled with scrambled eggs and savory chopped ham. The cheddar cheese and Jack cheese was thoroughly melted through. It was quite filling and tasty, and even tastier with the house red hot sauce. Service was quick and friendly. Me and my girlfriend got an Airbnb for a week in Pacific Beach right down the street from Areli's. We didn't realize we were in the presence of the taco gods themselves! We came here three separate times during our stay. Knowing we'd want to try the Mexican in the area we ended up only trying one other spot and still kept coming back here. I think we subconsciously knew we didn't need anywhere else! You walk in and see the menu on your left and it's a true thing of beauty. I could tell the second I walked in the door, I was in the presence of greatness. All in all we have photos of the Quesabirria, Fish Tacos, and Rolled tacos but we also tried the crunchy beef tacos and shrimp tacos. Everything and I tell you EVERYTHING about this experience was pure ecstasy. I needed to check my pulse after the first visit to make sure I hadn't died and gone to taco heaven. The tortillas, the simplicity of the fish taco, the tender juicy Birria braised beef and don't even get me started on that consommé. I would plan a James Bond excursion, if necessary, to retrieve the secret recipe to that braising liquid. The crunchy rolled tacos were perfect with one of the best guacamoles I've ever had atop. Crunchy Beef tacos even better. Top those with any salsa they offer you and you're in for a meal. All in all this was the best taco experience I've ever had in my life. This may not mean a lot for an east coast guy coming from NYC area on vacation, but nonetheless. I'm a human being with taste buds and as a former line cook, I know great food when I taste it. Best mini tacos I've tried in San Diego! I have tried quite a few tacos places and this is by the far the tastiest tacos! I got 4 mini chicken tacos, and rice on the side! Definition of a hidden gem. Came in here after a horrendous day right after finding out my car was towed but the food here was the silver lining in an otherwise dark cloud. Wow! This is now my go-to taco/Mexican spot! They have Caldo de Res, lengua, and buche. Won't find that at most places. I really wanted fish tacos and had a very hard time deciding when I saw the chile rellenos. I did get the fish tacos and was very happy with my choice. I added avocado because, avocado makes everything better. The tacos came with rice and refried beans along with either red or green sauce. I asked for both. Of course. The fish was crispy, the tortilla lightly grilled and delicious. The tacos were $9.00 and the avocado was an additional $2. For $11 this is a great deal for an awesome meal. I It's right around the corner from me and I eat here at least once a week. Every ingredient in their California, Conga, Breakfast burritos and more is packed with flavor, high quality, and cooked perfectly. My personal go to is a California burrito, add beans and sour cream. The staff who work there are also incredibly friendly, and their prices are insanely good for the quality. Though to be honest, I'd pay $30 and get spat at for that burrito, it's that good. Only thing that makes Areli's a 9.9 instead of a solid 10 is that they close early so on a late night I'm stuck with Rigo's for my drunchies. read more

He was very friendly, super clear with my order (confirmed what's included inside the burrito), and just had contagious happy energy. They have the BEST tortillas. Most places I would expect a California burrito to have pico, but I actually really enjoy theirs without. Make sure to add a side of guacamole, theirs is smooth and creamy almost like a sauce and is DELICIOUS. Don't skip out on the habanero salsa either. I've been wanting to try this place for a while. I really like that there is dedicated parking for the taco shop (a major plus in this area). I ordered a beef taco and rolled tacos. The beef taco was good, it had a good flavor to it. The rules tacos were the thinnest I've ever had (thinner than my pinky), but that's ok because it wasn't rock hard with a ton of tortilla. I'm not a fan of the salsa, I had their red. There was a distinct odd flavor, I've had it brie but can't quite identify it.
