Wife loves the bean tostada as it comes nicely topped with lettuce, tomatoes and onions. Son mentioned the meat in his Cali burrito didn't taste freshly made. We usually order from the Sweetwater location, and they rarely disappoint. This time, we ordered through DoorDash, and our food came from the Bonita location instead. We ordered the Tacorito burritos, and they were very different from what we're used to. They were loaded with lettuce and onions, with barely any meat. It wasn't terrible, but it definitely wasn't what we expected based on our past experiences. For over a decade this has been our go to spot. I think most of the dishes are much better than across the street at Lolitas. (Bonita has my favorite Cotijas and least favorite Lolita's). This place has the best Carne Asada around, and if they had nopales, I would put it up against tacos El Gordo. Everyone seems to have a different favorite item here. I have never had a bad dish, though the chicken quality is below average and the one thing I won't order again. I'm split between the Carne Asada and birria as my fave, so I usually get both and a couple fish tacos. When they include the extra sauce, the birria is where it's at. If they don't, it's dry. The street tacos are a great deal - especially the (fried) fish tacos. They're surprisingly big. So is the giant burrito. If you have a group of people, it's fun to get different versions of those. They're huge. I don't even think a hungry teenager could finish one alone. If you can handle spice, the salsa bar has a few choices. The really spicy ones are on the side by the refrigerator. But if you're a gringo like I am, the salsa verde on the other side is a tasty addition to anything on the menu. I recognize that Antoinette is not the most friendly/bubbly person. That's just how she is, and I don't think it should be a deal killer. She's great at what she does. Bonus points if you can get her to laugh or smile. Just know that it's not you, and it's totally worth going if you want legit Mexican food without crossing the border. read more

LOVE their $1.99 street tacos anytime not just Tuesdays! My fav is the carnitas, my kid loves their adobada. They all come with a good amount of meat, guac, and toppings. If you eat it there, they also give you some chips on the side. Their salsa bar also has fresh cucumbers which I love for a little extra veggies in addition to the radishes. There are spicy onions too, and they are SPICY!!!! Or maybe I got a weird bite but phewwwww I was panting! I like their mild chunky salsa too! The Mexican food here is alright. Nothing special and I've been disappointed 90% of the time I've eaten here. Whether it's my rolled tacos being soggy, pico packed on my tacos, flavorless meat, something missing, or a plate made incorrectly, it's happened to me here. Service is lacking, prices are average, and there is a small inside dining area with salsa bar. The lady who typically works the register/counter is unpleasant. She never smiles and always looks annoyed. Every time I've come here, she has taken my order. Pre salsa bar she would give attitude when asked for more salsa. Not a problem, I'm willing to pay. But when I order 4 plates, 4-5 small hot sauces containers aren't going to cut it. Problem solved, they now have a salsa bar where you're able to pour your own. I've never eaten here and always take my food to go. But since my orders have been missing items and I've been given the wrong items in the past, I check my order before leaving. God help me if they have to correct an issue. I've been given attitude for noticing and showing them my order is wrong/missing an item. We both ordered rolled tacos but I had them with chicken and a carne asada burrito to go. Food came out fast and fresh and the cashier even delivered our food to our table. We arrived 40 minutes before closing so their salsa selection was limited but the mild salsa is a winner. The rolled tacos was covered with lettuce and hid the amount of cheese and guacamole and after taking a few bits it could have used a little more and , the saving grace is their salsa. Best Taco Tuesday spot in Bonita! They have very good tacos and traditional Mexican cooking. They are able to get your order to you quickly and it's made very fresh. What I like about this location is that the Taco Tuesday night is $1.99 per taco and they give you three or four options of what type of protein you want. The staff is nice and they do a good job preparing your food. Rice and beans is always delicious here and they also have very good tortilla chips. I love that they have bottled beers just in case you want to take your taco Tuesday up a notch The fresh salsa bar is also a plus. You will be happy to sit in their comfortable booth seating. This Cotijas is conveniently located in a shopping center, they don't have a drive through but the service is always fast. Their menu is big, there's lots of choices. I like that they have seafood also. Their fish tacos are really good. I really enjoy the many salsas they provide and condiments in their salsa bar which is self serve. So far, Cotijas Taco shop in Bonita has been my favorite place for carne asada fries. The fries were fried perfectly crispy and not burnt and mushy, the meat was tasty with all the fixings. Delicious and props to the cook. Salsa bar had a good selection of salsas. If you're looking for carrots, it will cost. Although not a very large place, there's was good amount of tables and chairs. Literally the WORST customer service I've ever had. The cashier didn't say a single word to us. Just stared at us until we began to order and didn't say anything the entire time. They don't wear name-tags (which they probably should) but the receipt says "Mariela". Once we sat down I heard her tell the cook through the little window "no quiero estar aquí porque nací pobre chingado!" Then it was very clear why we got the service we did. Disappointing order pick up experience: When I ordered over the phone, 2 staff members said they had difficulty hearing me. I could hear loud background noise on the other end. When I arrived, the radio in the staff area was quite loud and there was a staff member sweeping the floor with earbuds in her ears. No one was at the counter to help customers and no one acknowledged me. I could see my order sitting behind the counter and decided to start filling up to go salsa containers while I waited. After about a minute, the staff who was sweeping went behind the counter and addressed me by saying something like, "Yes?" I explained that I was there to pick up an order. She said an order number and asked if it was mine. I said I wasn't given an order number and described what I had ordered. The staff seemed confused and annoyed. Another staff arrived and clarified that my order was sitting on the counter. When the original staff finally rang me up, the amount was about $2 more than what I was quoted over the phone. The staff then threw away my receipt instead of asking me if I wanted it. I stayed away from this location for about a year due to ongoing customer service issues. It looks like things haven't changed. I won't be going back to this location if I can help it. read more

Wow I haven't been here in a long time and I was in the mood for rolled tacos. But seeing the pictures before entering the place the crunchy tacos which are my favorite I had to get them instead. We used to order breakfast burritos every Sunday. Today not only do they charge $7.99 for breakfast and $11.75 for Machaca but it cubes with ALL BEANS. While they were smaller in size the amount of ingredients was definitely better in taste and quantity. *I forgot a tip but will go back today!!! When I want to just gorge on a breakfast burrito for hours or days, I'm right at Cotijas counter and getting me a grande breakfast burrito and honestly it can feed a family of four easily with just one burrito. I know they use three gigantic tortillas but I don't know how bags of cheese, tubs of sour cream, or dozens of eggs they need to make just one but I'm glad that I'm not the guy rolling that burrito up. My first impression was the food definitely takes away your craving and one of their salsas is delish! Also, the employee named Meleny taking order was in her phone and with an EarPod in which made it a little difficult for her to hear our order and we had to repeat it to her. We also asked to dine in and she gave us to go which for me days she couldn't hear us. Aside from that it's a solid spot but not a favorite. The carne asada fries were good but I wish the guacamole had more flavor. The Chile relleno was good but half of it was stale and stuck to the plate. Would I go back? I called in an order ahead of time and they said they would get it ready. I went grocery shopping next door and came back in to find out they never started the order. It had already been 20 minutes of time that passed by. I waited for my order another 20 minutes. They stated that the special order I made for a burrito had rice and beans in it, when I confirmed before leaving- but they claim to mistakenly put a small box of rice to go on the side. The specialty burrito did not have rice in the burrito whatsoever as they claimed to have put that in and charged me $.90 for rice and $.90 for beans instead of accounting the price of ingredients I did not get in the burrito. Their surf and turf is not typical as the original surf and turf recipes known around San Diego. It also had 3 pieces of shrimp. I really don't understand what they were thinking when I communicated this on the phone as well as in person. It was a surf and turf burrito. It did not taste right. I did order $54 worth of food for my family's dinner and they messed up the California burrito. The fries were undercooked, soggy as if they fried on low for a short time- instead of cooking on med-high heat for an average time like most restaurants, the quality of the meat was chewy yet burned. I was very disappointed and I called the restaurant and their line was busy. I called 3 more times and they didn't answer. I'm never coming back here. You lost an entire family of customers. Oh by the way, there was a customer in the booth of the restaurant and the lady told the cashier that she messed up her order that it was suppose to be fries and not tortilla chips and the cashier said she was sorry. They simply do not care even when communication has clearly been established. There are consequences within a business when you ignore the paying customers request and lie to them. read more

Have been going here for a few years as they always had much better, and cheaper food than Los Panchos, but tonight was the last time. I stuck with them when prices sky rocketed, but now after being charged $1.66 fee for using my Debit Card without being told beforehand, never again! They should have a sign posted warning people. Not too sure why I haven't reviewed this place yet. It's one of my favorite taco shops. A few of my go to's include the Cali Surfin', Carne Asada or the Cali Burritos. The fish and shrimp tacos are good. The Shrimp quesadilla is really good and of course the Carne Asada chips or fries, phenomenal. They have a half order of fries or chips, which I like, because I can't throw down like I used to. A big part of what makes Cotija's my favorite is Ann. She is the best cashier I've ever come across. She is always friendly and makes sure I have everything from salsa to napkins to a fork if needed. I came in one particular time and ordered a bunch of food for my family. I have little ones that are finicky when it comes to eating. She was very accommodating and helpful in both ordering and packing the food. I'm very appreciative of that, because most places would have just stuffed the food in boxes and said bye. Overall, this location is great. Very consistent with portions, presentation and quality. I've seen some reviews that state otherwise. But for me, it's been a good experience every time. read more
