Simply the best taco shop in SD in my opinion. Everything is good! You can also catch a game there.

I've lived in Santee most of my life so I have to give Cotija's 3 stars because I've been eating here since I was little. I recommend the $2 bean sope with a jamaica to drink, they are both delicious! The sopes are topped with lettuce, salsa fresca and cheese. They're about the size of a CD but they fill you up real fast. And the jamaica...that's simple. It's just refreshing and sweet. This meal is inexpensive (~$4) and I refuse to get anything else nowadays. I used to order a bunch of different things here but I realized I was beginning to spend a lot of money on them. The only reason I knock off two stars is because Cotija's is kind of expensive and the parking is frustrating...always has been, always will be. Nevertheless, Cotija's is a good place to go for a Mexican food fix. read more

Love this place! Have always gotten burritos which are great until last night. Got a shrimp quesadilla. OMG it was fabulous and was so good even reheated cuz was so big had 3.5 meals out of one order. Big succulent shrimp, with plenty of cheese and other good stuff. Plenty of room for parking and right next to the freeway for a quick escape. I ordered the Taco Salad with shredded chicken. It was a decent sized portion. The shredded chicken was nice and tender. It had low quality cheese, there was a lot of cilantro and seasoning to make up for that. The house sauce is dank! Its spiciness is about a 5 but its taste great! read more

I am not a resident of Santee, San Diego, California or an American citizen. I have friends in Santee that I occasionally visit. Every time I go, I insist on going to this Cotija. It is absolutely amazing. The fish tacos are delicious but my absolute favourite is the vegetarian burrito. I don't eat meat, so this burrito is perfect. It is packed with delicious guacamole, beans, rice, lettuce and other goodies. It's so huge that I usually don't finish it and end up having a scrumptious snack to eat later. I have never had a problem with the service. I find them quite courteous. I have issues with cheese and milk, so if I ask for no sour cream and cheese, they always remember to accommodate me. I also find the employees there very courteous and respectful. Overall, I would recommend this place. I'm going back to San Diego soon and I'm going to make sure I go here again. read more

I've lived in Santee my whole life, back in the day this place was the best so it saddens me to write this but today they are not. Quality of the food has seriously diminished and on top of that the charge WAY too much. I paid $8.75 for a cheese, egg, potato, and guacamole burrito like seriously!!?!? It's highway robbery. You'll do better going to Cazadores down the street, don't waste your time and money. read more

This probably the better then most sitting down mexican restaurants. Everything on their menu is spectacular. My favorites are shredded beef tacos or any of the combo plates. Whenever i am in the area I have to get my taquitos fix...! They are just perfectly fine with Guacomole toppings. Friendly Service And Nice And Clean Area! They have the most delicious burritos! My family and I have been eating there for at least ten years and we've yet to be disappointed. Service is fast and if you phone in your order, it'll be there waiting by the time you get there. Though I recommend you check your order before you leave, as I've come home without every burrito a couple of times. They also have really good "wet" sauce aka enchilada sauce. Prices have gone up within the last couple years but it's still pretty reasonable for a burrito. I go there whenever I go home. And it's right next to a 7-11, so you can have burrito & slurpee night. read more

this is my "go to" taco shop in my neighborhood. i'm never disappointed (accept when the bottom falls out of my burrito - but i'll get to that later) and always satisfied. my faves are: california burrito, bean and cheese burrito, and carne asada fries. they have my favorite carne asada fries of any taco shop....ever. the portion is HUGE and i always have leftovers. and let me tell you, this girl can eat!! so its a lot of food for sure. oh and the breakfast burrito is my fave of all breakfast burritos: ham, cheese, egg, beans and sour cream. you really cannot go wrong. hangover cure central. oh and the shrimp burrito is so good and has lots of yummy white sauce. ok...i cant get enough of the majority of the menu =) so about the bottom falling out of my burrito. i say this happens like maybe 1 in 4 times i eat here. be especially careful of the shrimp burrito b/c that white sauce eats right through the tortilla. i usually have to cut it in 1/2 to avoid extra spillage. that probably why it lost the 5th star...but all in all, i love cotijas. oh and if you are a horchata fan...they have THE BEST horchata. my fave. read more

My friend and I were here tonight... He had 2 chicken tacos.. He ate the first one and was on the second one... Half way through the second taco he bit into a toothpick.... Then there was another one sticking out of the taco... All together he found two tooth picks in one of the tacos. The lady working said "sorry, that's how we roll our tacos." No refund. The food is great, however I took a bite into ROCKS in my enchiladas and cracked a tooth. BEWARE, These assholes are judgmental and racist, and will do profound stuff to your food if they decide they don't like you, if you are ordering food and they give you an attitude, or I you get a feeling that this feels awkward, RUN, they will screw with your food. I ended up with a $800 dollar dental bill. I should have filed a police report and sued them, however i was dumb and passed. Beware, Had i fed this stuff to my kids, I may have had a serious problem. Food is OK...nothing special...the proportions are standard for fast Mexican but the prices seem fairly premium for middle of the road fare. I've had this type of Mexican food all over SD and this is priced like it's located in la Jolla rather than Santee. Unlikely to return. read more

Quite possibly the greatest Taco Shop in the history of taco shops. I've been eating here for over 20 years. I moved away from Santee almost a decade ago and it's still a staple stop anytime I make it to the San Diego area. My personal favorite is a bean and cheese burrito with extra cheese. The salsa bar is great. Rolled Tacos aren't too shabby either. Huge portion size and amazing taste. Eat in or dine out, you won't regret this stop. read more

I just moved to the area, but have lived downtown for a long time now.. Ordered a standard San Diego staple " (Cali burrito). It was all onions, no guac, no meat in the first 5 bites. Not impressed. Went here on a whim and got the steak and eggs breakfast burrito...carne asada, eggs, cheese and POTATOES. I was so excited and then when I got home I was a bit irritated with my burrito. There were FRIES in it...ok yeah sure, fries are technically potatoes but assuming its BREAKFAST, I was expecting roasted or cooked potatoes, not yucky soggy fries. Fries are in the Cali burrito not in a breakfast burrito, or shouldn't be anyways. Bottom line is they need to specify that their "potatoes" are in fact fries also, it was pretty bland. Going downhill fast. Used to absolutely love the diablo shrimp burrito. Now it is far from "diablo" and even farther from shrimp. Only had 2 shrimp the last time I ordered one...I called and she said that customers said the burrito was too spicy so they spiced it down...she didn't know why only had 2 shrimp (didn't apologize either)...won't be going back anytime soon! read more

Not sure what all the hype is for this place. I was in the area and was craving some carne asada fries. Based on a review I saw, a fellow helper said they had the best fries ever. Ummmmm....no. First off, any place that puts beans and salsa fresca on carne asada fries is just wrong. So, I order the fries without beans and salsa fresca. And what do I get? Carne asada fries DRENCHED in sour cream. I almost thought I ordered a half a gallon of sour cream. From what I could taste of the carne asada I wasn't very impressed. There are so many better taquerias in San Diego than this place. Blah. read more
