I have been a regular at this taco shop for many years and went to order food after work and the cashier who was working gave me the WORST service ever. She was very rude to me from the second i walked up to order not. She was very rude and after i got home turns out my order was wrong and when i called the shop she started to lie and tell me that it wasnt her that is was another girl that took my order when the ONLY people working their was her and the cook!! and started yelling and at me and interupting me so when i went back not only did she not want to give me my money back or fix my order she was yelling at me and told me she didnt care if i ever came back or not and gave me the WORST experiance of my life as a customer. i left in such a shock and so mad that im writing a review for the first time in my life. read more

Never really had Cotijas and its definitely overrated . Ordered a breakfast burrito and it was just a bunch of tortilla with sour cream. Nothing special. Salsas are just as tasteless as the food. Maybe I tried it on a bad day but I don't think I will try again unless they put some flavor and spice in the salsas. read more

My biggest criticism is their carnitas. Just because you cooked some pork, does not mean it is carnitas. Such a let down. The rest of the food is decent when comparing to the other Mexican food places in Santee. read more

This place charges high prices for at best mediocre food. I ordered a bean and rice burrito asking for some onions and cilantro. They charged me 89 cents per item requested when I could have gotten it from the salsa bar for free. I decided to give it a second chance and the carne asada burrito lacked in flavor, spices, and seemed to have the synthetic guacamole that comes in a bag. This is not a true representation of mexican food as it should be known, but more of a representation of what shortcuts may do for the quality and flavor of food. I used to love this place so much so that when I moved out of Santee to Lakeside I would order take-out and make the drive to Santee to pick it up. Not anymore after the 10th time of them screwing up my order now I'm done! The shrimp quesadilla is pricey enough This last time I ordered it I got home and found they'd given me a ham & cheese quesadilla. at least 10 times before that they forget to put white sauce on rolled fish taco's or Shrimp burrito and quesadilla . I use to come here all the time and for quite some time. A resident of Santee for 12 years you find a certain nitch of who has the best Mexican food. I used to come here even before they expanded the second dining area. Since I've been coming here I've seen quite a sellout in quality and customer service. I think a primary reason for their continued success is the access, on the corner of Mission Gorge Rd and Fanita Ave in the same parking lot as 7/11. Pretty convenient for anyone to stop in. And I think they know that. People will conveniently stop and pick up Mexican food with this kind of access regardless of how good it really is. As for what's really wrong with the food? The last couple times I ate there the Mixed Burrito was so salty I couldn't eat it and the beef was nasty, long and stringy, it wouldn't break down no matter how much I chewed. The last Carne Asada burrito I ate had hard gristle on more than one occasion, once again, nasty. In the mean time another Mexican restaurant opened in the Henry's shopping center. The service there is great, the place is clean and the food is excellent. Sorry Cotijas, but your days for me are done. read more

This Cotija's is just ok. Their rolled tacos and carne asada burritos are good. When it comes to seafood, it does seem like they skimp on the shrimp, and the last time I ordered carne asada chips there were hardly any chips, especially for $7. However, the service is good and the food quality is consistent, unlike their Clairemont location. read more

I've had multiple items ranging from their california burrito to their beef tacos, all have been alright, i've never been wowed by anything, but like i originally stated it's probably the best thing you're going to get this far east. they do have a decent salsa bar if you go inside and their regular hot sauce isn't too bad. my dad eats their fish tacos all the time and he doesn't really complain too much either and look at it this way, it's always busy so they must be doing something right. overall, if you're craving some mexican and you're down on mission gorge, go to cotijas. read more

I took my hungry pregnant self to get some rolled tacos and a bean and cheese burrito to eat another day. (Something I find myself doing a lot from this place). When I went to open the burrito a few days later, it was not a bean and cheese burrito. Me and my husband went back to explain to them what happened and order more food. The guy proceeded to tell us that since we didn't call the day it happened, that there was nothing they could do. I told him that I got the burrito for another day and did not know the day of. He said that was the manager policy and we were out of luck. Needless to say, we did not order more food from here. All we wanted was another bean and cheese burrito to replace the money we gave them for the food we did not receive. Yum,Was introduced to this place by a friend, this place is so good the best Carna asada burrito I've had in a really really long time, even though this place is a little bit out of my distance range since I don't drive and can only walk to certain places it's a real treat to get to come here, my boyfriend I come here at least once a week and are never disappointed in there food or service always top notch, even though I don't live closer to Rosiritos their service has gone downhill so quickly since they reopened after the fire have gone there too many times lately and had the food be absolutely terrible from coming in sometimes three times because my orders wrong for the food so terrible I take a few bites and threw it away, Los Pinos , is OK the friendly to me but they're a bit expensive, down on Fletcher parkway is a really good place called aZteca tacos which I go to because I can walk to it. This place and azteca are by far my two favorite taco shops in the La Mesa/Santee area , taco shop that make me miss the good hole in the wall ones when I lived in North Park, normal heights, Adams Avenue area. read more

We have been eating at Cotijas since we moved to this side of Santee about 3 years ago. When we lived on the other side of Cuyamaca street we went to over-priced sombrero's. Just about every San Diegan has a favorite neighborhood taco shop. Cotija's is our taco shop. My wife likes their fish burritos minus the white sauce and the rolled tacos with Mexican guac. I willl usually go for a carnitas burrito, beef taco plate, or carna asada nachos. I love chimichanga's but when i order them here i have to ask them to make it with carnitas (its pork gringo) without all the peppers and onions. This doesn't bother me though because i discovered that almost all tacos shops use the same pre-mixed nasty stewed beef filling for their chimichangas. Are they the best taco shop in all of San Diego? Of course not. No place in san diego is perfect. But they are one of the better taco shops in santee which probably explains why they have been in business for so long and every friday evening they are slammed with customers. read more

What happened to this place? I have been eating there for over 15 years and up to about 9 months ago loved it! Lately it has changed, I thought it was just me but when talking to a few other fans they agreed. The food is salty and lacks freshness. The red sauce has changed. The place really sucks. My first time coming here and I had a large order for my friends and myself. I told the guy to be patient with me since I had to read through a text message to order everything. I wanted 2 California burritos, add guac, add sour cream and add shrimp. He stopped me and refused saying that it would be easier and cheaper for me to order a "surf & turf" but their version comes with all this extra stuff like lettuce and rice and white sauce? I was trying to tell him that he was going to make it harder for me to verify the order, but he kept arguing with me so whatever, I gave in to whatever he wanted to do, especially because at this point a line was starting to form behind me. Maybe he should've just let me pay extra instead of trying to force me to order something else and remove all the extra stuff and add the stuff I wanted instead. Maybe he's never heard the saying, "the customer is always right" ???? I got the rest of the stuff ordered, and then when it came time to order what I wanted, I told him I just wanted a plain California burrito, meaning "just the way it was" without changes. He told me that "plain" would mean just meat and "potato" which I think he meant french fries, I responded that I wanted it like normal, with guac, sour cream, cheese, pico or salsa and just like how any regular California burrito would be. He shook his head like he understood me but he was rushing.... charged me $45 and handed me the receipt. I stepped away and started getting salsas... which I got like 6 containers of and he gave me a dirty look over. Like really dude? I just spent $45 on Mexican food and you're going to give me a hard time about your salsa bar? I stepped away then and took a second to look over my receipt. Not at all what I wanted and he charged me for a "plain" cali burrito and a regular cali burrito. I was so pissed, I didn't even want to get back in line and explain it again to him. I will definitely never come back here, and I'd warn anyone who has a large order with substitutions to stay away! The guy who took my order was extremely rude and pushy about getting me to change my order and just listen to him because thought he knew better. Service is quick and the food is great. Parking can be a bit of a challenge but that is usually the sign of a good Mexican food place! My husband got a carne asada burrito and I got the rolled tacos and beef tamale plate. The food was the best we've had in this area so far. Good food, good salsa. I give it 4 stars because the ham/bacon on their breakfast burritos is gross. Every other bite was pork fat, yuck. We had to throw it away so that was a waste. hey it is fast food ..so good food , clean but it smells like pine sol but its clean for the most part, , however with that said, be sure to ask what is in your burrito and not just go by the menu, as a vegan I want vegan stuff in my burrito, so I have to be specific which is ok I am use to it, the food is delish I would recommend this place , they don't use lard which is a plus for me. Consistently good mexican food. My favorite taco shop in Santee. The carne asada is tasty- I like it in the torta and tacos. Husband likes the carne asada super nachos. I also like their rolled tacos but you have to be sure to ask for mexican guacamole. If not you will get "light green slime" on your tacos.
