Wow, I cannot believe how much this place has improved since the last time I was here. The customer service is outstanding. The two young ladies running the counter are friendly , helpful and hard working. The Birria is tender , well seasoned and a fair price. I also really enjoyed the consommé. Such a great flavor and not too spicy. Their salsa bar is one of a kind . Filled with three salsa options, limes, radishes, and jalapeños. I really enjoy their salsas . I really like that in addition to their many Birria options they also have fish and carne asada dishes in case you are craving something else . The dining room is really cute and very clean. I've been coming to Mr. Birria's for a while and I have to say it's one of the best places in San Diego to get Birria. The times I've come in I've been greeted with a friendly welcome and smile from cashier, Lucy. Lucy has recommended some pretty delicious options besides birria and I want to give thanks to her for having patience with me. I suffer from anxiety and she made me feel calm and not rushed. I'm also amazed that the aguas frescas are made from starch. They are so worth the price. My son loves the cucumber one. I will definitely be coming back again and again. I really wanted to love Mr. Birria, especially with so many positive reviews, but unfortunately this visit fell a bit short for me. Upon entering, there was no greeting. I tried to give grace and assume it may have been a language barrier, but when I asked questions about the menu, the woman at the front came off a little rude and rushed. I mentioned it was our first time, yet I still felt pressured to order quickly. I actually stepped aside and let the only customer behind me go first so I could ask her what was good. She mentioned her boyfriend usually gets the birria taco, which is a street taco--meat, onions, and cilantro only. No cheese unless you pay extra. The pricing stood out immediately. Plain street tacos were $3.60, and adding cheese brought them to about $4.60. I also noticed the menu prices did not match what we were charged--they seemed to be about 10-20 cents higher across the board. For a family of four, we ordered: * 4 queso birria tacos * 4 mulitas * 1 order of chips Our total came out to a little over $50, which felt steep considering everything was essentially street-size. Even the mulitas were street-style, with a corn tortilla on top. I'm used to mulitas being larger, crispier, with cheese melted on both sides--not soggy. Unfortunately, these were falling apart. I also ordered a side of consommé (almost $4), which honestly wasn't needed since the tacos were already very soggy. The salsa bar was basic--three salsas, jalapeños only (no carrots), and radishes. Nothing bad, just very minimal. I skipped ordering drinks because the cups listed on the board were $7.00 (and likely more, considering the price discrepancies). At that point, it just didn't feel worth it. The positives: the establishment was clean, open, and bright. Bathrooms were clean, and parking was easy to find, which I always appreciate. Overall, I think the menu pricing needs to be reviewed for accuracy, the prices adjusted slightly, and the food quality--especially portion size and texture--looked at more closely. It wasn't overly busy when we arrived on a Sunday afternoon, just steady, so I can't really blame the crowd. Unfortunately, we all left still hungry, which is never a good sign after spending $50 on tacos. Because of that, this isn't an experience I'd be eager to repeat anytime soon. It's been a long time since we have visited Mr. Birria. I called in the order this time so the pictures don't quite do the food justice but it was so good! My husband had the Queso Birria Tacos extra crispy (dorado in Spanish) they were awesome! So much birria and flavor. I had the 1/2 order of birria stew with flour tortillas. The consommé was so flavorful and full of birria. There were lots of onions, cilantro, and limes to enhance the flavor. The updates they have made since the last time we were there are great. They opened up the restaurant, it's at least double in size and has quite a bit more seating. There is a great self service salsa bar with lots of tasty salsas, chili oil, and toppings. They also have several options for Agua Frescas. As always the service was great and with a smile. We will definitely be back soon! read more

This is such a good spot for tacos. I got their taco box and each taco was filled with meat it was perfection. I ordered the nachos as well and they didn't disappoint. Came here again for Taco Tuesday! Late afternoon had the large dining room all to ourselves. The Taco Box includes a Birria, carne asada, adobada and a cabeza taco for ten dollars and change. This is the Deal! This allows me to splurge on a michelada or an agua fresca. I splurged today on two agua frescas cause they are so refreshing and freshly made in house. The tamarindo and cucumber limon were pure refreshment and complemented my tacos to perfection. My son recently graduated from high school, and we chose Mr. Birria Catering for his graduation party. Overall, we had a good experience. The communication with Veronica was excellent from start to finish. She answered all of my questions promptly and made the ordering process very easy. Their catering packages serve 10 people each, and I ended up ordering seven packages. The food arrived as scheduled and included rice, beans, meat, tortillas, and all the necessary accompaniments. The birria was absolutely amazing, and the al pastor was also a huge hit with our guests. Unfortunately, the carne asada lacked flavor, and very few people ate it. The beans and rice were also not very popular with our guests. We had six trays of beans and rice left over, so we ended up making plates and donating the food to people in need. One thing I really appreciated was that they offered delivery for a very reasonable fee, which made hosting the event much easier. The guacamole was disappointing. It was very watery and runny and did not have the consistency or appearance of traditional guacamole. I sent a photo and reached out regarding my concern, but after payment had been made, I did not receive a response. Despite those issues, the birria, al pastor, delivery service, and communication before the event were excellent. I would definitely consider using them again in the future, although I would likely skip the carne asada, beans, rice, and guacamole. read more

A bit further out of the way from San Diego proper, but this place offers plenty of parking and plenty of seating with food at great prices, so this is excellent for groups. I went here for an early dinner and we were able to order and get our food very quickly. I went with the combo that had birria ramen + 2 queso tacos for $15+tax which is a lot cheaper than if you were to buy them a la carte. Besides, the combo features the items of regular size, not any smaller. The birria ramen had good amounts of meat and the broth (consomme) is not too salty. They use instant ramen for the ramen, but after all, this is a Mexican restaurant, not a ramen shop, so I won't complain; besides, the value is good. The queso taco is a little bit on the oily side, but stuffed with meat and cheese. Dip with the birria ramen consomme and there you go, no need to pay extra for a small side of consomme for your birria tacos. Overall, this place hits the spot and it is super affordable. As long as you are willing to drive (San Diego distances are small compared to, say, LA), you will be rewarded with nicely priced and delicious Mexican food! read more

This was my second time here. The burritos and tacos are really good but I came back to try the Birria Ramen. The flavor is good and the meat is quality. I do think the noodles could be a bit better quality but they still taste good. My daughters and friends enjoyed it as well. These were the worst carne asada nachos I've ever had. They are overpriced, full of nacho cheese (not SD Style with shredded cheese) and the flavor is lacking. What was most disgusting is the fact that they used the cheapest cuts of meat. 90% fat. This is truly inedible. I've never had to throw Carne Asada Chips away! This was a waste of money. First I ordered The Birria Trio Combo. $13.50. Three of the favorites. A Birria Mulita, A Standard Birria Taco, A Quesa Birria Taco and a Delicious Cup of their Famous Birria Consome. Excellent way to sample the flavors. I also ordered The Surf n Turf Seafood Taco . Wow. This was my favorite place to get Birria Ramen. I used to go once a week at least and tell everyone about it. The first few months were amazing!! The Birria Ramen was delicious and brimming with juicy meat and worth every penny. The last few times I went however, I noticed they were starting to give smaller portions, but I stuck with them and still chose to eat there over other options. But after my most recent visit I left extremely disappointed and saddened that my favorite place is not an option anymore. I seriously couldn't even find any chunks of meat in my Ramen bowl. Instead I found two small chunks of gummy, fat and nothing but noodles for actually more money than the first time I ate there. Stop what you are doing and eat here! As a shellfish allergy person this place is safe to eat at. Make sure to let them know and they will accommodate you. Staff was warm and patient with us as we asked a million questions about my allergies and what is good on the menu. We ended up with the potato tacos super crispy and light, a perfect snack for that crunchy craving. We both went for a birria burrito which is challenging to dip in the consome because the meat is so juicy and delicious.
