Fried Chicken Thighs
Meg A.

Staying near Thomas Square, my innkeeper recommended the fried chicken at Cotton & Rye. As fortune would have it, there was a seat at the bar on a busy Saturday night and I counted myself lucky indeed. I was greeted warmly and ordered a Cuba Libre, which was crisp and well-balanced. Though their chicken wings are James Beard award-winning, I opted for their very attractively priced fried chicken dinner. That first bite - with a little dab of ranch dressing - was the best bite of fried chicken I've ever tasted. The dish came with mac&cheese, which was perfection: cavatappi with a rich béchamel sauce and lightly broiled on the top layer, along with crisp pickled cucumbers, a sweet/spicy dipping sauce, and a trio of cornbread donuts. Oh my god! I would happily return to eat here and would frequent it if I was a local. They offer a fantastic menu of regional dishes and the desserts looked to-die-for. On Thursday nights, they offer a burger, fries, and martini for $25. That kind of offer from a popular and well-regarded establishment goes a long way in my book for engendering loyalty. Thank you Cotton & Rye for making this Yankee feel right at home in Savannah.

Absolutely OUTSTANDING food and service! Make sure to snag a reservation if you want dinner service. It's a little lively inside as the building is a remodeled old bank and pretty packed in for a smaller space but so worth the experience. This place has been overlooked by Michelin for sure. The menu is seasonal and the website isn't always updated for special menus so you might find yourself choosing what you want upon arrival. We got the Duck breast (which arguably was the least notable on the entire plate, but the cabbage was PHENOMENAL), the seafood crudo (by far the best octopus we've ever had) and the bread pudding (from their onsite pastry chef and which was the perfect ending to our dinner).

Cotton and rye has nice outdoor seating. Our waitress was friendly and offered honest suggestions. Felt the food was just ok - a bit of hit or miss, and the quality didn't align with the high prices. We had the wings (very good, liked they gave moist napkins to clean hands), the low country perloo (meh - a subpar paella, oversalted and sausage was almost non existent and tasteless), burger and fries (fries are homemade and very good, burger patty dry/overcooked, tasty special sauce). For dessert, we had the candy bars (tasted great, just like a Twix). All in - I'd consider coming for dessert, but otherwise would suggest looking elsewhere in Savannah.

Cotton and Rye in Savannah is an absolute triumph and one of those rare places that feels special from the moment you walk in until long after you leave. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming with a sense of care and craft that shows up in every detail from the service to the presentation to the flavors on the plate. This is the kind of restaurant that reminds you why dining out can be such a joyful experience and why Savannah's food scene deserves so much praise. The Brussels sprouts deserve their own standing ovation because they are quite simply the best I have ever had anywhere. Perfectly cooked with incredible depth of flavor they manage to be both comforting and exciting at the same time. Even people who claim they do not like Brussels sprouts would be completely converted after one bite. They are balanced rich and addictive and I would happily come back just for them alone. They set a standard that feels almost unfair to other restaurants. And then there are the candy bars which are nothing short of magical. They are nostalgic and elevated all at once delivering pure happiness in dessert form. Every bite feels indulgent thoughtful and incredibly satisfying and they end the meal on the highest possible note. Cotton and Rye is a place that gets everything right from start to finish and leaves you already planning your next visit. It is a must for anyone visiting or living in Savannah and truly one of the best dining experiences around.

Probably the all-around best eats and drinks we had in Savannah, which is saying something. Brendan gave us probably the best service of the trip, too. Loved our mains. Loved our side. Loved our drinks. Pricing was reasonable. The room (physically cold) and music (annoying folk/rock) were downsides - both things drove my wife nuts. One ordering mistake on my part: Everyone foodie-ish I met loved hearing that we'd made reservations for Cotton & Rye and talked up the dessert chef (Peanut), all mentioning the "Twix bars" in particular. Me being a fool, I opted to try the special dessert (a gingersnap/apple bread pudding with ice cream) instead: it was fine, but not revelatory. We are planning to return to Savannah - and a big part of why is that we'd like to eat at Cotton & Rye again.

An old bank is the setting for this very cool restaurant with one dining room even set in the old vault! Our waitress was extremely nice and helpful which added to the good experience we had. The cocktail list is extensive as is the wine list. We started out with an old fashioned and an Indiana Jones which were very good. The steak tartar starter was tasty. I had the seafood perloo which was excellent and my wife had the local trout on crab rice which she enjoyed. Make sure you save room for desert as their deserts are special. We had the candy bars, chocolate mouse, and vanilla cinnamon ice cream all made in house and delicious. When in Savannah, this is definitely a place to try!

This review is for dinner and coming from a non-local. Visited Savannah and this was by far the best meal we had on the trip. I'm honestly still dreaming of it! Ambiance / Service: casual, almost has an industrial feel to it. Minimal decor. It felt like this was a less touristy place, with more locals dining here. Server was super friendly and they split most our food into two plates in the kitchen for us which was nice. Food: I would come back here again solely for the food. I ordered the below for 2 people and it was too much, but I'd still order it all over! -Award Winning Chicken Wings: I know there's mixed reviews, but I thought these were amazing. Drenched in sauce & so flavorful, but somehow still crispy. More sweet than spicy. -Mussels: delicious. Sauce is creamy and flavorful. -Savannah Crab Rice: this was unique. Felt like it had some Indian inspired flavors. If you can't do spicy, I would skip. -Strawberry Panzanella: good to share. Fresh, light, and refreshing. -Fried Chicken: because I got so many apps I split the entree with someone. We each got a big piece of chicken. It was the perfect serving. Chicken wasn't greasy at all. Loved the homemade hot sauce & buttermilk ranch. Mac n cheese was delicious too. Comes with cornmeal doughnuts - recommend ordering as a side if your main doesn't come with. Sooo good! -Pimento Cheese Grits: YES. Sooo good. My favorite side. -Green Tomatoes: I didn't love the goat cheese with it, but this was a personal preference. Nothing "wrong" with the dish. -Collard Greens: very smoky flavor. -Peanut Butter Pie: no photo. Got this to go. I think it's an award winning pie. Literally tastes like a pb&j sandwich. It was really good. A bit rich, so recommend sharing.

This place is fantastic. It gets very busy so reservations are helpful; when we got there, there was a wait for the bar. The cocktails are solid, though perhaps not the most varied flavors for the season. But they can make off-menu classic cocktails as well. The beef tartare was a great starter, fresh and light. The pork shank was rich and delicious. The trout was the showstopper, with lightly spicy tasso ham/crab rice. And do not miss the peanut butter pie. I haven't eaten that much of any dessert in years.

This place continues to shine and set the standard of quality for the city. Jason and Jay behind the bar make it fun. The servers are great and make coming here feel like a family; Asia, EA, Olivia, Kaitlin, Brendon!!! The food is excellent and the venue just makes your experience that much better!!!! This is a must stop when visiting the city.

The food was very good, portions are generous also. Restaurant had a cool vibe inside, unfortunately we were sat outside under a tent during a thunderstorm so felt a little overpriced for the experience. Our server was efficient. Drinks were also good, recommend the mocktail! For dessert, we got the candy bars and peanut butter pie. The candy bar is like a homemade Twix bar. The peanut butter bar was rich but tasted very good and came with a scrumptious homemade brown sugar whipped cream on the side.

A fantastic start to my time in Savannah. I heard it was good but didn't realize HOW good. Every course I had was mindful, impactful, and memorable. My first impression upon arrival to Cotton & Rye was that the vibes were immaculate. It's a smaller and more intimate set up with a staff that was warm, approachable, helpful, and kind. My first impression carried throughout the rest of the meal. The shrimp and grits appetizer was absolute perfection. The trout entree was incredible, each component playing an important role in the harmony of the dish. For dessert I ordered a glass of the vin santo and a biscotti. Overall I can't think of anything that required improvement. I will always eat here whenever I'm in town.

This was easily the best meal we had on our weekend getaway to Savannah. Their chefs and restaurant are award-winning and wanted to have some great food on our last night in the city. We were able to snag a last minute reservation. As soon as we were greeted by the hostess, I knew we were in for a treat. We waited a few minutes for our table to get prepared. Thank goodness we were seated in the covered patio area because the main dining room was warm. Our server, Patrick, was amazing! He took such great care of us and recommended all the right things. I ordered the pear-a-normal, it's a seasonal cocktail and was afraid that it would be cinnamon heavy but it was one of the best cocktails I've ever had and I'm not a big drinker. To start, we shared the octopus and it was grilled perfectly! You didn't even need a knife as it was buttery soft and was served with little bits of chorizo and potatoes. There were some bites that were a little too salty, but thought all the flavors worked well. For mains, I ordered the low country perloo and my husband ordered their market fish (tile fish). The perloo was like a comforting hug of rice, fresh seafood and flavor bomb in my mouth. My husband enjoyed his dish as well as it was his first time having tile fish. It was grilled to perfection and was still flaky. We did not intend on ordering desert, but Patrick really sold us on the peanut butter pie. The flavor profile is reminiscent of a PB & J sandwich - the actual mousse part was peanut butter-y yet light served with strawberry sauce. My favorite part here was the dehydrated milk crumbles! I'm definitely looking forward to when I can dine here again!

Chicken Parm

Looking for a perfect date night in Savannah? This has to be top of the list. Everything we ordered came out perfect and paired well with the drinks on their menu. Latkes were crispy and had great accoutrements, wish they'd been on the side to avoid getting soggy but still great. Best part of the meal had to be the wings. "Award Winning" and they are every bit of that. Smothered in a sticky sauce that had a smoky chipotle flavor with a hit of honey and a blend of spices. Extremely crispy and fell off the bone. Chicken parm could have served two people! Huge cutlet and serving of bucatini with a mislay spicy sauce.

Chicken wings with sauce on the side -- good flavor but dry

Cotton & Rye Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Cotton & Rye

Do they currently offer a Happy Hour for food and drink? - asking in July 2021.

No they don't offer Happy Hour.

We are traveling and have our dog with us, he's 6 pounds and sits in a stroller. Will he be allowed if we will be at the outdoor area?

They have an outdoor seating area that is covered and heated and a pup was there when we were. :)

Is this a kid friendly restaurant? Traveling from Charlotte and wanted to try this place but will have our 10 year old and 1 year old. They are both well behaved and act right but I'm just not familiar with the place

Yes kid friendly

Can they order McDonald's for me?

Dumb question.

What's the attire? Traveling from Texas and thought jeans and nice shirt would be suitable?

I'd say 'smart / casual' but I saw men in shorts and jeans.

How loud is this restaurant?

Not at all. At least when I was there. Just regular table chatter. This is more of a date night restaurant then hang out for drinks after work restaurant.

How is the outdoor patio for those who have dined there? Planning a large (12+ adults) group dinner there in June and was told that was where there was seating availability. Thanks in advance.

The patio and garden are really nice. They have a covered and uncovered area. It was a little windy when we were there though.

How is the fish and grits and how much does it cost?

I have only seen the shrimp and grits and it $13

Is this restaurant accessable?

Yes. It's one level, spacious seating and very accessible.

Will be traveling with our dog. Outside seating pet friendly?

Only if it's a service animal.

I was debating between the Fried green tomato BLT or the Caprese Grilled cheese then our server Kristin suggested the mussels and that is what I ended up with and I am so glad I did. These were absolutely the best mussels I've ever had. The sauce was not the traditional garlic/shallot wine sauce but had more tomato and basil reminiscent of warm bruschetta. I had to borrow my husbands spoon to get every bit of that sauce after I finished my mussels. My husband had the famous shrimp and grits which he absolutely loved. He noted it wasn't overpowered with sausage like most other restaurants do but had a perfect balance of flavor. My mom got the lamb burger and also loved every bite. She loved lamb so as soon as she saw that she had no doubt what she was going to order. Both my husband and mom loved every bite. I can see why The Public Kitchen is so popular. The restaurant has some indoor and outdoor seating with a mix of tables and banquets along the walls. It was comfortable without being too crowded. This was my first visit to The Public but It definitely won't be my last.

It…read morewas difficult to pick a restaurant to have dinner at, because there's so many great choices in Savannah, but seeing that the minds behind Common Thread were recently semifinalists for Best Chef SE through the James Beard Awards, it ended up being my choice. I'm absolutely glad I picked it. Walking in, we were greeted with smiles. The house/restaurant was stunning. It was quirky but still had its charm. We were escorted to our table, which was an odd little table halfway up the stairs, away from everyone. We were told that table was meant of anniversaries/intimate events. It felt awkward at first but it ended up being fun people watching and listening in to conversations as people walked by. Colton was our server. He was great. Extremely knowledgeable. He walked us through the menu, offered great suggestions on food and wine, did a proper wine service, and even properly pronounced the region in which the wine was from. Colton definitely made us feel special and gave us an incredible experience. I'll definitely give it to Common Thread. The knowledge in which every staff member presented was incredible. As every person dropped off an item at the table, they accurately described the dish in detail before they walked away. I've been in the restaurant industry for almost 20 years; serving, bartending, and managing numerous different types of restaurants, from casual to fine dining. I've opened up a few restaurants and have been a trainer as well. Common Thread is operating at a high level in terms of the staff's ability. The food: incredible. We started with one of each oyster, and it was insane how much flavor was packed in them. Our first course was also accompanied with the hand roll and the apple beet salad. The hand roll was fantastic. The beet salad felt like it needed some sort of acid/citrus with it, but still had great flavor. Course two was the mushroom cannelloni and the orecchiette. Both were phenomenal. My wife was obsessed with the cannelloni, the butternut squash puree was a perfect accompaniment. The pesto/parmesan foam on the orecchiette was an excellent touch. Course three we went against Colton's suggestion for the pork chop (almost got both, we were stuffed), and got the Ribeye. Great char, cooked perfectly. The peppercorn jus was an excellent topper for it. For dessert, we opted for the sticky toffee pudding. Although it wasn't sticky, the ginger pairing with it was an excellent touch. This is one of the best experiences we've ever had at a restaurant. This will be a staple for us whenever we're back in Savannah and will definitely be asking for Colton again. He is the kind of server I'd like to have at my restaurant. Props to Common Thread, props to Colton.

Pretty place with lovely eating spaces and interesting food, but didn't quite hit the mark for us…read more Honestly, we felt the restaurant was somewhat more taken with itself than the experience warranted. Without going into excessive detail about our extensive notes (because everything is subjective and I don't want this review to sound super negative), we found the dishes were fine-to-good . . . but not quite where we thought they should be given the vaunted reputation of the establishment. (I'll note that from the reviews here and the professional reviewer buzz, our take is a minority one.) One thing I'll say in favor of Common Thread: my wife ordered a dish with which she has a lot of experience and the version the restaurant served (while made of high quality ingredients) was not of the preparatory style that she was expecting. The server noted she did not eat it and simply took it off the tab - well and professionally done.

I asked if we could grab drinks at the bar and she kept coming up with excuses on why we couldn't stand or sit in certain areas. Finally, I just asked her to come up with a solution because we had 15 minutes to kill and they didn't have a waiting area. Funny enough, she decided then to get our table ready. It was just odd. Our server was from Ukraine so she was efficient and fast. Not super friendly or chatty with us which missed the mark on Southern hospitality and made our experience feel cold compared to our previous dinner experiences in town. I don't fault her for it though as she did her job. We ordered an excessive amount of starters and some of the entrees. The stand outs for me was the crispy Brussels sprouts, roasted bone marrow, steamed mussels, and grilled octopus. Skip any of the bread options. They weren't even toasted. For entrees, we also decided to share them. The pork chop and NY strip were stand outs. We ended up sending back the halibut. It tasted mealy and freeze burnt. Skip the crispy Japanese eggplant. I was expecting a grilled dish and it was actually fried with a thick batter. Too heavy for my liking. Overall, we enjoyed our meal but not somewhere I am dying to go back to.

We were sat in what I believe used to be a front parlour, by a window over looking the street. We had a dual service with one person being the "main" server, his name was Michael. He was in charge of giving us the spiel and answering our questions. A woman (I forget her name, sorry! But she was lovely) was in charge of running the food and clearing the plates. It was a very well run machine. The menu is pre set, but there were choices on some of the courses, like course where an option was a soft shelled crab - I definitely wanted to take advantage of that! We started off with Biscuits with butter and homemade orange marmalade, these were delightful, so fluffy and soft, and the marmalade was sweet, not bitter like it sometimes can be. The Amuse bouche was a trio of tiny items: a pimento cheese tart, a mussel with chipotle sauce and panko, and a square of salmon with mild wasabi and ginger. The salmon was definitely my favorite. The fifth course had a special as I noted before, so I opted to go for that, it was a soft shell crab with garlic, herbs and a vidalia onion slaw. Topped with peanuts and a white wine sauce. I think my favorite course of them all was the scallops with the carrots and the whipped ricotta - so simple but so delicious! Phenomenal special occasion place or just to cross off your bucket list. If I am in Savannah again (and the likelihood is high, its such an amazing city), I will be back.
