Fantastic from start to finish. Since they don't take reservations I arrived a bit early to join the waitlist for my group of five. I was able to grab a seat at the bar while I waited and enjoyed a fantastic cocktail (peaches and cream) off their seasonal menu - bar staff were top notch, could not have been more welcoming or helpful. We quickly moved to our table, and the amazing service continued. Everyone loved their meals, too - most went with their famous shrimp and grits, but I don't care for seafood and chose the chicken scallopini. It was the best meal I've had yet this year - absolutely fantastic. Couldn't recommend Public more! read more

If I could rate higher than 5 stars I definitely would. We came in for lunch on a Tuesday around 11:45am. It was not packed but as we sat the restaurant began to fill up. I was debating between the Fried green tomato BLT or the Caprese Grilled cheese then our server Kristin suggested the mussels and that is what I ended up with and I am so glad I did. These were absolutely the best mussels I've ever had. The sauce was not the traditional garlic/shallot wine sauce but had more tomato and basil reminiscent of warm bruschetta. I had to borrow my husbands spoon to get every bit of that sauce after I finished my mussels. My husband had the famous shrimp and grits which he absolutely loved. He noted it wasn't overpowered with sausage like most other restaurants do but had a perfect balance of flavor. My mom got the lamb burger and also loved every bite. She loved lamb so as soon as she saw that she had no doubt what she was going to order. Both my husband and mom loved every bite. I can see why The Public Kitchen is so popular. The restaurant has some indoor and outdoor seating with a mix of tables and banquets along the walls. It was comfortable without being too crowded. One of our favorite places to eat in Savannah. They don't accept reservations, so get there a little early and then go on a walk. Their shrimp and grits continues to be the best in Savannah (imo). The sausage and sauce sets it apart. Enjoyed the linguine with clams (wish they had a little more pasta in it, but I digress). On a different visit - I had a ricotta gnocchi dish with shaved brussel sprouts that was amazing - reminded me more of a take on a ravioli, so good - please bring that dish back!!!!! read more

This was a very nice dinner spot! We learned that the menu changes every so often, so I would recommend looking at the menu on their website. The bartender said they were changing it in a couple weeks and the only thing that stays the same is the shrimp and grits and some variation of burger (different toppings). The ricotta gnocchi was a very light tasting meal, though it was very filling. The gnocchi was very soft, which I didn't particularly love, but the sausage on top was a great addition for some sort of protein (sausage came with the meal - not added). The shrimp and grits was very nice. The sauce was very smooth and creamy. The pork loin was cooked great, no pink, and was still very juicy. The sauce on top was also creamy and meshed well with the pork. There was bar seating, seating next to the bar by the window, a downstairs seating area, and outdoor seating (great if you have a dog). I wish I could give this place a 4.5, but they are definitely still deserving of a 5. I would definitely come back here! read more

Hands down one of my favorite spots in Georgia. Their Savannah Shrimp & Grits is ultra creamy, rich, generously seasoned, with plump, juicy shrimp - the kind of dish you keep thinking about every single day after you try it. It was so good that on our final day in town, we came back just to see it again. The Savory Brined Grilled Pork also left us pleasantly surprised - it's so tender! On our second visit, we tried to be adventurous and ordered the Seafood Mac and Seared Salmon. They were okay. We should've stayed loyal. (When a dish is that good, don't cheat on it.) Also, if the server offers a Soup of the Day that involves the words "tomato" and "bisque," nod your head, say yes, get it. It's a super comforting and yummy appetizer. Ambiance felt perfect for date night. Service was a bit of a gamble, with some servers super attentive and others going MIA. Moral of the story: if you come here, order the shrimp & grits. Now I understand why this place is packed all of the time. Granted we walked right in on a Tuesday at noon, but it filled up by 12:30. The food has an explosion of flavor in every dish. Lamb Burger, cooked medium rare was outs with cucumbers and tomatoes as a side that was packed with dill and basil. The PEI Mussels were so tender and the tomato broth with shallots and basil were excellent with a squeeze of charred lemon. If you are a shrimp and grits fan, theirs is one of the best recipes I've ever had. The sauce explodes with savory, herbal balance with crumbles of sausage and tender shrimp. Oh gosh where to start other than how amazing this restaurant is. We came on a Sunday night and were seated outside right away. Thankfully they have fans outside so it can blow directly onto you so we sat comfy throughout our meal. For drinks I can't remember what I got but it was fantastic. We got the burrata which is a super small appetizer to split between two people but that's about it. However it was tasty and I'm kind of glad of how small it was so it didn't ruin dinner. Our server was great and was able to help us narrow down our choices and so happy they suggested the butterfish because it was the best fish I've had in a long time. The salsa pairing was perfect and the rice was a coconut type of rice that just made you feel like you were on a beach. The plantains were also good but the fish was the real star. I would highly recommend people come here and I definitely would try it again if I was in the area just to try another one of their amazing looking dishes. read more

We were walking near the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist and wanted something within a few blocks for a quiet lunch to relax and regroup. We ended up at Public Kitchen & Bar and were seated immediately on a Monday, which was a great start. This ended up being one of my favorite restaurants in Savannah. The atmosphere was calm and relaxing--perfect for a laid-back lunch. I had the Caprese sandwich along with a cocktail made with honeysuckle vodka, and both were excellent. My husband ordered the chicken salad sandwich and really enjoyed it as well. Service was great, the food was great, and the overall vibe was exactly what we were looking for. This is THE best food my husband and I have ever had, and we are avid food lovers. We got the duck confit and the shrimp and grits, along with a side of garlic whipped potatoes and the Crimson Supernova cocktail. The duck is slow cooked in its own fat for three days, if I'm remembering what the waitress said correctly. It was so tender that it fell apart with barely a touch of my knife. It was flavored immaculately and paired with toasted farro, roasted potatoes and carrots, and an apricot chutney. After the first bite, I could have fallen over, it was so delicious. The shrimp and grits had a rich, creamy sauce with a slight spiciness to it and depth of flavor that I can't even explain with words. There were pieces of sausage and grape tomato in the sauce that elevated it even further, and the grits almost had a whipped texture to them. The garlic mashed potatoes were the best I've ever had. They weren't as light as I had expected, but they had an even, heavy garlic flavor throughout with a perfect amount of pepper to add that full-bodied depth to a dish. Lastly, the drink: I've never had anything like it. I don't like cinnamon too much, but there was an almost powdery cinnamon sugar rim that wasn't too strong. The drink was very tart and shocking at the first sip, but by the second, I was in love. It had a fruity and flowery taste that meshed so insanely well with the mezcal smokiness. I wish I lived closer to this restaurant so that I could keep coming back. There was also a live performer named Cyril Durant that was playing guitar and singing while we were there, and I could not believe how amazing his voice was. Lastly, the atmosphere was sublime. The temperature was cool with a breeze, and it had just gotten dark outside when we got there. We sat on the roof and just looked over the city streets with the ambient lighting from the restaurant and street lamps and couldn't have been happier. Let me preface this review by saying that I love The Public and it's one of my go-to places to bring friends visiting from out of town. Unfortunately, my experience last night left a bad taste in my mouth. We were seated in the lower dining room. Everything was going well with good service and delicious drinks... and then I spotted a cockroach crawling under our table. Of course, we are in the south & I am willing to overlook the odd roach here and there. However, when a second one emerged from the hallway, my confidence that this was just a one-off incident tanked. By the time our food arrived, our focus had been diverted to be on roach alert. Unfortunately, the food also missed the mark--overly salty and bland at the same time. None of this aligns with The Public I know and love, so I am really hoping this was just an off night. Went here for a last-minute dinner on a Sunday night and it was crowded! We were able to be seated inside after a 10 minute wait. They have live music on the roof on Sundays and Tuesdays, which is very fun. The service was nice and consistent. We split a salad, brussels sprouts, and burger with truffle fries. The brussels sprouts were genuinely some of the best that I've ever had and I would come back here just to get those. Amazing food and service! On such a beautiful Savannah evening, we were so fortunate to get a table on the upstairs balcony. It's such a lovely vibe with white lights in the trees and a nice view of the block. Our server Lilly, was so lovely and attentive. The food was AMAZING! Everyone loved their selections. Listen! This place was phenomenal! Highly recommend especially on a cold day. I had the BEST spiced apples grilled cheese with Parmesan truffle fries, my son had the shrimp and grits (very southern, absolutely delicious), and my boyfriend had the Philly cheesesteak sandwich, which he really enjoyed. The service was exceptional. Everyone worked as a team and was willing/ready to assist and help any guest. The ambiance was great. We dined on the bottoms level which as a Floridian was really cool to be in a sort of basement vibe. Very moody atmosphere. Highly recommend this place! I've dined here before and expected to see a rotating seasonal menu, which we did on this occasion. Our server was sweet and attentive, giving us the full "schpeel" on soup, catch of the day, etc. The restaurant seating in the lower room is nice, intimate with tables not too close and dim lighting. Both my sister and I ordered the catch of the day, Swordfish. The plates came and were very bland looking. The bacon-leek sauce was a bit too salty and the fennel bulb wasn't even green. If you eat first with your eyes, this dish would have failed miserably. As for taste, the swordfish itself was good, but would have been better accompanied by a citrus burblanc type sauce, with more colorful vegetables and at the very least a sprinkle of green parsley. The salmon bruschetta starter was fresh and on some deliciously toasted bread. The New York strip was cooked to temp and had great flavor. This was our last stop in Savannah on our way out and I'm so glad it was! Matt got their soup special which was really good and I got the Caesar salad which was pretty good. The star of the show was of course - the shrimp and grits. Those were unreal. So tasty. A little bit of heat but not too much! Made with chorizo sausage which I usually don't even like - it was amazing. The sauce was so flavorful. Like wow. I'm stunned. I'm coming back here for this dish!! Other restaurants take notes!!! My family and I came here in the afternoon on a Thursday. We had to wait about 15 minutes for a table, even though it was the middle of the week in an off hour for lunch. They do not have a parking lot, but street parking is fairly readily available. We placed at a table on the rooftop, which was charming. To access the roof, though, you do have to climb a flight of stairs that are outside the restaurant. Our party had six adults and three babies, in the server was very accommodating. He helped us get hot water for bottles and they got high chairs for all the kids. I'm pretty sure that they don't keep high chairs on the roof, so we really appreciated that they accommodated our seating requests and needs most of our party ordered different soups and sandwiches with one person ordering the shrimp and grits dinner. Everything was very good and came out in a quick amount of time. I had the grilled cheese, which was exceptional and my husband said his Cuban sandwich was the best he's ever had in his life. Our children shared a spaghetti and meatballs dinner from the kids menu. They knew that we were splitting it for three children so they gave us three different plates. The only thing I would've hoped they would've done differently. It was split it for us. Overall, the lunch prices were reasonable, and the food was really good. From top to bottom, this was one of the best dining experiences I've had. Jaylynn, my server was probably the kindest and most attentive server that I've ever had. Between walking me through the menu, offering great recommendations and checking up on me an appropriate amount of times, they were absolutely amazing. The shrimp and grits are worth the hype. I'm not the biggest fan of shrimp, but this dish is absolutely amazing. It's a perfect combination of chorizo, grits, and shrimp. Great date night spot! Dimmer lighting and candles helped add some ambiance. Our server was really bright and bubbly. She was very honest and made great recommendations. As for the food: Caesar salad -- Beware! If you're not obsessed with the taste of anchovies RUN THE OTHER DIRECTION. Each bite tastes like the sea. Very, very fishy. The steak, potatoes, and green beans was a solid choice. But I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. The apple cider cake donut wasn't bad! Buuuuut, it wasn't amazing. The dessert was really dense and lacked the softness and airiness I look for in a donut. And for the crowd pleaser: the shrimp and grits! Let me start off by saying, I HATE grits. Never ordered it. We were looking for a nice spot for dinner after a show at the Savannah Theatre. This place is only a couple of blocks away. Chicken Satay for starter was excellent. 2 skewers of tasty curried chicken with tabbouleh. For entree, I had the Savory Brined Grilled Pork with polenta. It was huge and delicious. Cooked perfectly. Great first start! Hosts were welcoming, server was enthusiastic, atmosphere was...interesting. I had the Southern Bruschetta, my companion had the Pesto Chopped Salad. My Bruschetta was fine, but reminded me of something my grandmother would make for guests when she didn't have the time or energy to make something "nice." Toasted baguette slides, pimento cheese, and chopped bacon. Basic no-effort Southern potluck fare. The salad was good, like a Green Goddess salad with extra basil. Quite enjoyable, actually. For dinner, we shared the "Best in Savannah 8 years in a row" shrimp and grits. Baffling. This was not award-winning food. Far too much chorizo. It overpowered every other flavor in the dish. The grits themselves did not taste at all like the advertised cheddar and bacon...but of course, it would be hard to tell under all that chorizo. I detected exactly one pea. I hope the kitchen was just off. Shared a sweet corn creme caramel. No. Just no. It was an affront to creme caramel everywhere. The texture was perfect. The flavor was like eating canned cream corn mixed with brown sugar. Our so sweet server was SO determined that we would like everything that I didn't have the heart to tell her how disappointing our meal was. I'd love to know if that is an actual business strategy. Great place for a quick, calm lunch downtown. Ordered the spinach and Brussels salad with added chicken. While it was tasty, I thought it odd that the chicken was hot and the Brussels cold. There were only half a dozen within the salad so not a big deal but it was freezing outside so it made me feel the chill a little bit more.
