I will say the food is very delicious here. We enjoyed everything we ordered. The waiter was also great and pleasant. However, the lady at the front was not welcoming to us with our children. She said upfront that there are no kid menus, high chairs and strollers had to be placed elsewhere. I get it, it is good for us to know but it came across a bit unfriendly. She also did not want my daughter to momentarily sit in the waiting area with the other guests. I would understand if this was a fine dining upscale restaurant that was quiet but the ambiance was very ordinary. There was regular restaurant noise and people dressed casually. If you are going to advertise your establishment as "good for kids" please consider the way you are talking to families who want to dine here. read more

During our Savannah eating bonanza, we had brunch at Common Restaurant. The brunch menu is fairly extensive, so we had some difficulty choosing what to order....but definitely come hungry because the portions are large and the food is pretty rich. To share amongst the table, we ordered the cinnamon toast banane and crispy gouda grit croquettes. Thumbs up on both, particularly the croquettes which were the right balance of gooey and structured enough to eat with the delicious sauce on the side. The cinnamon toast banane was not so much toast as cinnamon rolls with bananas foster; the cinnamon rolls were really tasty and the bananas foster was good, though the bourbon flavor was strong. For my entree, I ordered one of the lighter vegetarian dishes - the mushroom tartine with tomato soup. I think it is one of the lighter dishes - certainly lighter than what my dining companions ordered - but it was still quite rich with a fair amount of gouda fondue in the tomato bisque soup. My bf and I came here for brunch the other day and the thought sounded better than the actual meal unfortunately. I got the brisket and grits with a sunny side up egg and my bf got the andouille and Gouda Mac au gratin. I also got a side of sweet potato hash. My food was very mid, the brisket was cooked perfectly but the problem was it was so salty, I couldn't even taste anything else on the plate. My bf pasta was so heavy , he couldn't enjoy the food. It needed some type of cream, it seemed it dried up while baking. We ordered drinks and I got an amaretto sour with egg white and that was probably the best thing I had. Wow! My wife and I showed up just before 3pm on a Sunday, looking for some happy hour oysters and drinks and we left happy! The hostess set up a small table for us next to the bar and our server was there immediately to guide us through the drinks and food options. The inside of the restaurant was elegant. We had a large group of 8 that they were able to accommodate at a large round table. Overall, food was average. The pineapple situation was supposed to be sweet and chili Mahi Mahi, but I only tasted sweet flavor with not much kick. My friends and I grabbed dinner at this beautiful restaurant Monday night. Once our group sat down, the manager stopped by our table and offered us some rolls that this restaurant only make 6 of per night (usually reserved for events) since one of our friends is friends with one of the servers at the restaurant. The manager definitely didn't have to do this, but we automatically felt welcomed by this gesture. Also, the rolls were amazing! It had flaky sea salt, rosemary, and other seasonings, and it was really soft in the middle. Also, I have to give a shout out to our server, Mike! He was so personable and had us laughing the entire time! He also went out of his way to search for an outlet for one of our friends that needed to charge her phone, which was really sweet of him. As for the dinner I ordered, I would say that it was a solid 4. My sister and I ended up splitting the Hot Honey Glazed Short Rib Fettucini Fattoria since we were interested in trying both. The short rib was perfectly cooked and tender, but it definitely could've used more seasoning. I nearly asked for a side of flaky sea salt since it would've taken this dish over the edge because of how perfectly cooked it was. Outside of that, the sides including the cornbread were absolutely delicious. The fettuccine also could've used a bit more salt or a hit of citrus to bring out the flavors more, but was really good over all. We had an amazing time dining at Common. The style of the restaurant is moody and antique. We sat in the front by the bar for our big group. We showed up around the time where the prelude menu was available and just before dinner, so we ordered off both menus. From the Prelude menu we ordered a round of house and local oysters that are freshly shucked. They are priced at $0.75 and $2 a pop which makes it a great deal. They were served with crackers, lemons, hot sauce, horseradish, mignonette sauce and cocktail sauce. Off the dinner menu my sister ordered the Southern White Gumbo and I got the shrimp and grits. Both were very generous in the amount of seafood in both dishes. I liked that the shrimp was fresh and seasoned well. The grits were very creamy and was great with the shrimp. We walked into Common Restaurant feeling optimistic and started exactly the right way with a cocktail. This thing was a work of art. Crafted with intention. Mixed with respect. Balanced like it went to culinary finishing school. If the entire meal had followed this cocktail's lead, I would be writing a love letter instead of a review. Then came the sweet potato gnocchi. Highly acclaimed. Revered. Spoken about in hushed tones online. Unfortunately, it tasted like sage and butter got into a heated argument and nobody intervened. The butter was burnt. Not toasted. Burnt. There was an overwhelming bitterness that clung to every bite like it had something to prove. We gave it a fair shot and then quietly waved the white flag and moved on. Next up was the fried green tomato caprese salad, recommended enthusiastically by the staff. And to be fair, the fried green tomatoes were excellent. Crisp. Well seasoned. Textbook execution. The mozzarella was fresh and clean and exactly what you want it to be. The basil sauce was delicious but used so sparingly that it felt like it was being rationed. This sauce could have been the lead singer but was instead stuck playing tambourine in the background. Then there were the cherry tomatoes. Allegedly part of the dish. Hidden. Sparse. Distributed like it was wartime in the Soviet bloc. Blink and you miss them. The garlic aioli, however, came in like a hero and absolutely saved the plate. Rich, flavorful, and doing most of the heavy lifting by itself. This restaurant is highly acclaimed, beautifully presented, and clearly thoughtful. But on this visit, the kitchen underperformed. Great ideas. Great components. Execution that just did not come together. I would absolutely come back for cocktails. I just hope next time the food shows up ready to match the confidence of the bar. read more

Got a recommendation for this place because they have the salt bomb oysters and on happy hour for only $2 what a steal. We ended up doing a reservation and had our dog with us so I requested outdoor seating. They were very accommodating and service was fantastic. We got a dozen of the 75 cent oysters and a dozen salt bombs. Again what a steal for their prelude menu! The deconstructed fish sandwich was so different yet delicious- served with sourdough bread made in house with their 10 year old starter named Stewart. Gouda grit balls we're so different yet fluffy still and crunchy on the outside Fish spread was good they even came out with extra bread for us it had a lot of veggies in it so it was a super light spread. My husband and I had our anniversary dinner here on a Sunday evening. When we checked in at the front, the host immediately wished us a happy anniversary and walked us to our table. The ambiance is very nice; high ceilings give the restaurant a nice, open feel. When we sat in our booth, we saw there was a card already there for us, wishing us a happy anniversary: there were two silver pineapple pins attached to the card. I ordered a Planter's Punch, and it was very tasty. For my entree I ordered the shrimp and grits. The dish was flavorful and they were the best grits I have ever had, hands down. Drinks and food came out in a timely manner. For dinner I tried the pineapple situation - the fish was delicious, pineapple was good. The rice was a little bland in my opinion. For "fried rice" I didn't think it checked that box. Reminded me more of a sweet and sour rice rather than "fried rice". I still liked the meal overall. My husband tried one of their nightly specials, the swordfish. He said the fish was cooked to perfection but felt the same about the red rice side dish that it came with - the rice was boring and didn't add much to the dish. Overall, the main part of the meals (fish) was cooked to perfection and delicious but their rice sides could use some revisions in our opinion! They have an extensive list of wine and bourbon! Even some "exclusive" bourbons & wines from Greece! We are suckers for some volcanic wines & my husband enjoyed the bourbon collection. For dessert we had the seasonal creme brûlée which was a Carmel apple cider creme brûlée. I liked the actual custard itself but wasn't a fan of the chunky apples on top solely because I'm not a huge "Apple dessert" person. Such a nice brunch at common restaurant for my friend's bachelorette weekend. We were given an upstairs table which felt cozy and private for our celebration. Our table had a lovely card sending well wishes to our bride. We got the cinnamon toast bread to split which was excellent, and I had the duck and sweet potato hash which had so much flavor. There was also no complementary bread and only ones to order. There were only 2 pieces for the forager bruchetta which were overpriced. The sweet potato gnocchi had a nice tasting sauce. My wife and I enjoyed dinner here while staying for the weekend in Savannah. We made a reservation in advance and were promptly seated upon arrival on a hot July Saturday evening. My wife was presented with a handwritten card and a pineapple pin for her birthday, which we were celebrating. Things were starting great. A litany of menus was presented to us, including a tasting and oyster menu, the evening's menu, and a wine and beverage menu. It took a few minutes for us to digest all the information and decide upon the tasting menu with a wine pairing. The tasting menu had six courses, two of which we could select from a few options. The first course was a bread course with a small flute of champagne. We asked the person delivering the bread what type of bread it was and also what the butter was. His reply was, "I don't know. I just work here." What? If your job is to bring dishes out from the kitchen, shouldn't you know what you are serving? We flagged our server down, and he enlightened us that it was homemade sourdough bread with truffle butter. It was warm and delicious. My wife picked baked oysters with prosciutto and cheese for the second course. She shared a bit with me, and we both agreed that it was the best dish of the evening. If we were to return, we would skip the tasting menu and eat oysters. My second course was a black eye pea bruschetta that was also quite tasty, but not quite up to the level of the oysters. The wines paired with this course were whites: a Vouvray and a Sauvignon blanc. The server rattled off their names too quickly for us to remember, so we asked to bring the tasting menu back so we could track everything. The Vouvray was the clear favorite with a fantastic bouquet. The next course was a simple scoop of sorbet in some type of sparkling wine or champagne. We have no idea which or from where, as we weren't told, and it wasn't listed on the menu. My wife selected the crab and corn cream cheese ravioli for our main course. The ravioli had an unexpected sweet taste to it. After eating two or three of them, she had her fill. It was not a favorite for her, and it was not helpful that the raviolis were swimming in a sea of sauce. I fared much better this round with an upgraded choice of a rib-eye steak. This thing was huge and prepared perfectly to a medium rare temperature. It came with a fantastic mushroom gravy that added to the steak's flavor. The creamy mashed potatoes were lovely, but the broccolini was a bit undercooked to my liking. This round's wines were excellent--an Albariño white for the raviolis and a red Bordeaux for my steak. For dessert, we both chose the peach crème brûlée. You have to have peaches at some point in the meal while in Georgia. The juice from the diced peaches on top messed with the texture of the crème brûlée, which was not our favorite. We called an audible ahead of time with this course and switched the wine pairing from a Moscatel to a port. The last course was a cute little box with a bow containing tea and tea cookies to take with you. It's a nice touch at the end of the meal. I don't know if the restaurant wants to be a formal or casual venue. The prices suggest the former, while the service suggests the latter. It seems to be stuck somewhere in between.
