Quaint little restaurant at the end of a strip building. It was a gloomy morning when we came and there was still a line out of the door. There was an older couple playing music and singing right outside. A few people greeted them so it seemed like this was a regular thing. We had to wait about ten minutes, which wasn't a problem since we had time to look at the menu. We were going to be traveling again, so I got something that was affordable and pretty nutritious all around. I learned that the food here is sustainably sourced and they cook to order, so wait times were appropriate for how busy it was. Our server wasn't too enjoyable, but no other complaints about service. Pretty straightforward. Egg sandwich was light and flavorful. Breakfast potatoes were crispy on the outside fluffy on the inside, with seasoning on top. My sister got the pancakes. They were definitely organic blueberries, could have put a lot less because blueberries were rolling out of the pancakes with every bite. The batter of the mix was very thick, especially through the middle, but it tasted good. Lastly the fried chicken biscuit was tasty, but it was a small portion so my brother went through the food quick. Overall, if you're looking for good food with a laid back experience, this is it. Counter Cafe East delivered a five-star experience thanks to the stellar service from our server and the bussing lady (whose name I unfortunately forgot), who went above and beyond to pamper our dog and take great care of us during brunch. Despite the toasty summer morning, the fans outside made the al fresco space quite comfortable. I enjoyed a Baby Cake--a smaller version of their Hot Cake--topped with bananas and homemade whipped cream, along with a refreshing cold brew with milk. Food is good, service a bit chattery. The turkey club was excellent with real roast turkey, not deli meat. The Joe's Special, however, does not even remotely resemble a Joe's Special, which does NOT contain potatoes or sausage or parmesan or toast! An actual Joe's Special comes combined, not with the ingredients next to each other, with eggs, spinach and minced ground beef--sometimes mushrooms. New favorite breakfast/brunch place in Austin. If you want a non-millennially decorated, no-frills east coast diner-style breakfast/brunch THIS is your place! The crab cake Benedict was delicious and a steal for $17. I loooooved the pancake/hot cake. For $1, you must add the fresh whipped cream. We got there at 1pm on a Saturday and waited about 5 minutes for a table. Almost every table was taken so I'm pretty sure we just got really lucky. They also serve mimosas, bloody Mary's, and margaritas. Price is really reasonable for the portion sizes. read more

They put in more tortillas than most places, which I liked cuz I like tortillas. Their potatoes were pretty solid too. My friend's Counter Porridge was interesting. It's essentially quinoa in sweet cream. I wouldn't define it as "porridge" in the traditional sense, it's more in between a cereal and a yogurt parfait than anything else. It's pretty decent, but it's just the sum of its parts rather than the combination being anything amazing. We didn't get their more popular items, like their crab cakes, so will have to try those another time, but overall, a solid breakfast/brunch choice in East Austin. Tons of parking too! read more

Unfortunately my partner and I had a pretty mediocre food experience here. Service was great, however! My partner ordered the fried chicken biscuit, and I ordered the crab cakes and eggs. Both were pretty bland with the crab cakes being pretty fishy. The toast was dry, and I think the only thing we really liked were the breakfast potatoes and greens. We came for breakfast on our last day in Austin. Place was full, but was seated pretty quickly. Husband got the biscuits and gravy with a side of sausage. Son got steak and eggs and daughter got 1 giant chocolate pancake. Biscuits and gravy were surprisingly good. I loved the biscuits. Fluffy and soft. The pancake was also yum. Fluffy and a right amount of sweetness. The potatoes from the steak and egg plate were delicious. Little potatoes with onions. The steak was okay, but I'm sure paired with a fried egg and those potatoes it wasn't bad. For $22 though, the steak should've been more than okay. I got the Southern poached eggs. It came with grits and collards. The dish lacked something. I believe it was the grits. The eggs were perfect. The collards were spicy and flavorful, but the grits were just okay. Even with the egg yolk and the juice and spiciness from the collards, they still lacked. Even with me putting hot sauce. I think if the grits were good, this dish would be awesome. The Nitty Gritty So... before getting to the food, I need to comment on something serious. Bathrooms are an important part of any restaurant or establishment that serves the public. When my gf came back from the restroom she mentioned that the baby changing area was very dirty. A dirty changing station can really make it difficult to enjoy your time here. I hope that they take that cleanliness seriously, and while at it put a changing station in the mens restroom so both mothers and fathers can have the basic amenities available to take care of their children. So, I enjoyed the counter Benedict. The eggs were a bit under done and the hollandaise sauce was very thin. I'm a huge eggs Benedict fan and when it's right, it's amazing. The hot cake was amazing. Nothing fancy, but simple and honest menu and service. Corner burger with sweet potato fries would be a classic pick, I got veggie burger which made of lentils, quinoa and beets comes with whole-wheat buns. Loved my breakfast tacos. Quick service, comfy outdoor seating with lots of flowers, and the waiter got us our check right away when I asked. It's a busy restaurant but they get you seated right away and food out quickly. Lots of people want to eat here so I don't like to sit around for a half hour after my food is done and waste the seat. There's plenty of places to go sit down after a meal so I appreciate a restaurant with prompt service and I'm happy to move on so someone else can sit and enjoy a meal too.
