This is a wonderful place for friends and family. Cozy and well appointed with art and good wine. I often bring out of town guests here and stop by with my daughter for a quick bite. We read a little local rag about this place and decided to check it out as it's in our general 'hood (South Park) and were very happy with the experience. Ben lead us through the cheese selections, we chose the goat cheese gouda slices that come with crustini and a very nice sweet honey-like sauce to add to the wonderful flavor. Ordered the Bologna sandwich that the paper had touted and again, very pleased. Trying to convince my friends it's not their father's bologny sandwich but a nice, thick juicy slice. Happy to go again, nice decor too. And to the person who said it was too good for Golden Hill, puhleze, bring the nose down a notch buddy. Love this place! My friend lives around the corner and we started coming to this little gem several months ago. The staff is very friendly, the wine list is great and the food is delicious (love the artisan cheese sliders). I don't drink beer, but we have taken beer drinkers here and they were very pleased with the selection. Good atmosphere, with lots of seating for groups with more than four people. The food was much better under a previous menu system. Now that they have cut back on pizza and sandwiches, the menu can be hit or miss. Great beer rotation, and excellent service. The music is at an appropriate volume to allow for for conversation, but still loud enough to drown out any unwanted eavesdropping. Great staff. read more

Counterpoint may be small, but is a fun place to get some great food! I've been there twice and will definitely go again. LOVE the beet salad! I've had a salmon special with amazing flavor splashed into everything on the plate. Really enjoyed the gnocci (hope I spelled that right) - yummy!!! They are a few minutes from the Zoo/Balboa park, so we dropped in for brunch after a morning at the Zoo. Parking can be a bit tough Saturday morning, be prepared to walk a block or two. Counterpoint is friendly, comfortable, and seems to be full of regulars. I had the carnitas hash, the carnitas is more of a spicy tinga, a chile-pork stew, as opposed to the dried crispy pork most of us are used to. Pasilla peppers as opposed to the oh-so-wrong bells that are so overused in "mexican" food. Nicely roasted potatoes, a green avocado sauce (I think) two over medium eggs and a great little onion pickle, which we were told was simply pickled in lime and salt. This dish would be dry if they used classic carnitas, the pork is moist and quite spicy, its a good thing they had two nice fresh tortillas and a wonderful Alesmith X to go with it or it would have been a bit too spicy for me. Overall I REALLY enjoyed it, but if you are fanatic about traditional carnitas, you might be disappointed. Better to have the sweet tea brined chicken Benedict my wife enjoyed. I'm not a fan of the fried chicken and waffles craze, if you aren't either this might be your dish. The waffle is crispy and not too sweet, the chicken tasty moist and not too bready, fairly hard poached eggs and a spicy hollandaise-style sauce. Beautiful. Point off for the parking (sorry guys) food was great and creative, people nice, several other things I want to go back for on the brunch menu, and we can't wait to enjoy dinner there, it's a keeper. read more

I live in Golden Hill and have been frequenting this place for the past couple of years. I happened to notice a couple unfavorable reviews and decided that I had add my two cents. In short this place is great! Absolutely everything one could hope for in a neighborhood food and drink spot. The food is spectacular; they keep the menu fresh without dropping the staples they are known for. I would say that MOST of the dishes are made from scratch and often locally sourced. The menu is creative and in my opinion offers something for just about everyone from light dishes to hearty meals. Their brunch may be the best in the city, the Chicken & Waffles are something that must be made by the gods. Their burger is certainly the best I have had in this city, simple yet satisfying, in fact it is the reason I started to frequent this place. That said; don't get the wrong impression, Counterpoint is so very much more than just a burger joint. The beer list and drink menu also rotate on a regular basis. Counterpoint offers a creative list of craft cocktails that often include in-house barrel-aged spirits as well as homemade bitters or homemade tonic. They make their own Sangria and signature barrel-aged cocktails as well. The staff is always knowledgeable and will happily craft a custom drink for you or take you on a taste tour if you choose to give them free reign. The beers always offer a good variety; they generally feature a lot of local breweries with a sprinkling in of a few out of state favorites. Again, the knowledgable staff is always willing to help you satisfy your palate and are happy to provide you with a taster to help with a decision. I personally have always enjoyed the ambience and atmosphere at Counterpoint; I might describe it as upscale casual, the type of place you can bring a date for a nice dinner or walk into on a Saturday afternoon with some friends for beers and burgers too; or, just walk in alone, grab a seat at the bar and make a new friend in Golden Hill. While not an exceptionally large place they have the capability to host events and can tailor their menu and create a set up to accommodate your group. I have witnessed them hosting things from birthday and retirement parties all the way up to wedding receptions. If in doubt I would call and ask and let them tell you about their capabilities for events. I have always found the staff to be exceptional. In fact I would say they are among the best in town. They are knowledgable about the food and drinks they offer and they are talented enough to make something special for you as well. I have always found them to be friendly, attentive and welcoming. As a local from the neighborhood it is nice to have a place that remembers you, cares to learn about your tastes and always makes you feel your business is appreciated. Counterpoint is always one of my first recommendations to people when talking about San Diego Restaurants and easily my personal favorite. read more

I finally found a business bar that I like. Although, i've really never gone out and searched for a business bar I thought this was a great place. My friend recently flew into San Diego and was reading through and older copy of Entrepreneur magazine and saw that counterpoint was mentioned as a great business bar. He wanted to get a drink and so we tried it. They have a vast selection of wines and beers and they're all great. The staff is easy to talk to and very helpful in finding a great beer for your taste buds. read more

Friendliest place to drink this side of Balboa park. Excellent service. Top-notch atmosphere. Good selection of craft beers, mainly domestic wines. Food is of good quality. Mainly appropriate for snacking as opposed to dinner. There's always a good group of people here really enjoying themselves. The vibe is contagious. We went to Counterpoint Wine Bar early March 2015. I thought the bartenders were nice and gave good service. The food not so much. I ordered the scallop entrée and it came out with 4 little scallops and some veggies and little redskin potatoes. Very expensive for a small entrée. My husband had the bone marrow and there was a tiny bit of bone marrow. Mostly bone and gravy. While chatting with the owner he asked my husband what beer he was drinking and he said I'm fine I don't need anymore and he said, Oh I wasn't going to buy you a beer I was just wondering. How tacky and the wine by the glass is 4 ozs at best. Wont go back read more
