This is southern cuisine at its finest! I had chicken and dumplings - succulent - and my husband had the catfish dinner. He said it was the tastiest he has ever had. Awful food. Got the 8 piece fried chicken basket. The chicken was so over cooked and dry. The fried chicken tasted like the dredge was half flour and half salt. The Mac and Cheese was hands down the worst I've ever tasted. The pasta was waaaay overcooked it was basically a jelly, all cheese had separated from the pasta. The Mac also tasted like they added sugar to it!? One bite and into the garbage with the Mac and cheese. Biscuits were dry and bland. The only thing that was halfway decent was the potatoes. They were exactly that however HALFWAY decent, at least they were the only part that didn't wind up in the garbage. I'm assuming this place doesn't take credit cards as most diners would dispute the charges on the false advertisement of edible food. read more

Got tired of chain food, we always try to look for something different. And this is the one! This is a family restaurant, people are very friendly. The food was simple yet unbelievably very delicious. The stewed beef soup was full of beefy taste and very rich, you don't get such flavor often anymore in big restaurants. Chickens were very juicy and crispy at the same time. After many bad experiences with yelp, we only look for those restaurants with less ratings. And the results are often surprisingly good. If this rating is not shown on their page, it will clearly tell me the rummer is true that the yelp is internationally delete good rating on honest businesses. read more

This restaurant is a sort of time machine. It's set in "the country" not far from the town of Rocky Mount, Virginia. The food: There are daily specials: usually fried chicken and another meat. It also includes two veggies, a biscuit or cornbread, and a beverage. The fried chicken is awesome! It is tasty, well-seasoned with crispy skin and moist, tender meat. Remarkably, none of the fried foods were greasy and it was clearly fried in fresh oil. For the other meat, my wife got the fried catfish; it was just as great as the fried chicken. I ordered the grilled catfish, which I found very tasty, well-seasoned and tender. Hot and cold sides are available; I really enjoyed the sautéed spinach and pinto beans (which is available with minced onions and "chow-chow" on the side). The cornbread was deliciously moist and sweet. The portions are amply sized. I didn't leave room for dessert, but we took a couple home, the banana pudding and apple cobbler. I'd order them again. There is clearly a not-so-secret ingredient in each meal; it's named TLC. I really think each meal we had was prepared as if we were more than just customers, but family members. The service: Although we had never set foot in it, our party of four was warmly welcomed and treated like family by the owner and his daughter. "Boots" (ask him how he got the nickname...) greeted and seated us. His daughter (and owner), Cindy, provided the menus and stayed to answer questions. The food arrived in a timely manner. Hot foods were served hot, cold foods were served cold. Beverages were refilled as needed. The restaurant: It's not the fanciest, but the "front of the house" is clean and orderly. Behind the counter are some interesting things such as an antique toaster. The restaurant has both 4-person booths and a few tables. The music, mostly from the 1960's oldies playlist, was great to listen to and volume was not obtrusive at all. The bathrooms are very clean. The parking lot is gravel but there's plenty of room. Overall: Great family restaurant, great food, great service. Worth the drive, especially if you have the craving for exceptional country fried chicken! If you're staying at one of the local bed and breakfast inns or are in town for a concert at the Harvester, check this place out. It's a 5 minute drive from Rocky Mount. Don't let this place go by! You'll be sorry. It's on the out skirts of town but more than worthy of visiting. The food is outstanding, generous and priced to please. I had the catfish dinner. The catfish was cooked perfectly, the coleslaw was outstanding and the potato salad yummy. The corn bread was mouth watering. I also I indulged in the peach cobbler. It was perfection, perfect amount of yummy doughy crest and peaches seasoned to make it a delight I very seldom encounter. Ice cream was available but this cobbler was a killer without it. Good descent food, good prices that won't leave you broke, great service. The Country Barn has it all. Satifying meals, good portions, friendly servers and parking near the door. We enjoy getting take out from the Country Barn. Food is fresh, not fancy, and very tasty. The people are friendly. Looking forward to dining there (they do have outdoor dining space, FYI) when things get "better" (post covid). They are extremely careful about maintaining a healthy place...be ready to have your temp taken! The restaurant is super clean and really home-like. It would be a great place for a family to eat out. Restaurants are few and far between around here, my 5 stars are given for consistent quality, freshly made foods, complete and correct orders, friendly folks, clean restaurant, and the effort they put into being sure that their place is safe for everyone.
