Our first visit here. Cute, comfortable dining room with friendly staff. We had a hard time with the menu as breakfast is broken up between the first and last pages. I typically order the same thing for fair comparison. 2 eggs, 2 meat, potato, toast or pancake. That does not exist on their menu but there was a 2x order of eggs, meat and 2 pancakes so that's what I got. It was very good. I love the pork sausages they have here. I would say the value is good, too. Waffles were nice sized and tasty. We will come back. read more

Great spot conveniently located right off the highway. Had a breakfast on my way back from Chicago one morning. I didn't want to go to a chain restaurant but wanted to stay close to the highway so this restaurant worked great for me. It was Sunday so it was a bit busy but I found a table right away. It was a "seat yourself" system. I had a simple omelet served with potatoes. Kudos to them for keeping the prices low. Everything was very reasonably priced. The food was fresh and the portions were good. We had a party of five and we basically all ordered traditional breakfast plates. Eggs bacon hash browns biscuits gravy sausage and toast. Each meal was cooked to order so kuddos to the kitchen! Service was great, although we did have to wait for a table. Our hostess sat us about ten minutes after we arrived, we were promptly greeted by our server, she took both the drink orders and food orders immediately. These people know what they are doing, focusing on the guest listening to the guest and delivering what the guest ordered in a timely manner. Great service The ambiance is very casual, the restaurant is full of local people and people traveling, it's just off the interstate. The service was really good and it's a cafe that you seat yourself! It seems like it gets very busy on the weekends, it was quite busy. They run efficient so it goes pretty fast. The ambiance is like a diner and home style family place. The food is definitely good the smoked sausage, eggs, and pancakes were made to perfection. This is a great hometown place. Lots of locals. I couldn't pass up the grilled tenderloin sandwich based on the menu picture. I couldn't believe the size. It covered the buns and more. A huge portion of tasteless crunchy patty. I wish it had some flavor that i could comment on but it was almost like eating cardboard. potatoes served cold and their sausage gravy has minimal sausage and they suggest to you to order an extra pattie to put in it. also , the bathrooms were filthy , the return grates for the heating and air condition were so full of dirt and dust that I immediately wondered if the kitchen was safe. as of service when I told the manager about my meal she told me I must be a very special person because their food was good for everyone else and she then refunded only part of my money and told me to never come back. good luck if you go here if there still open after the health inspections. read more

Great spot right off the freeway, especially if you're on a road trip. I am baffled by the negative reviews because this place didn't give anything other than hole-in-the-wall diner vibes. If you're expecting anything else then definitely go somewhere else because this place will not be for you. We got exactly what we wanted and expected here. I will say that the bathroom is on the gross side so try to hold it but I also survived using it. My husband ordered the chorizo omelette with no onions so it came with tomatoes, cheese, and chorizo only. The American fries were cooked to my liking - a mix of soft and crispy. I ordered the country fried steak and wowee - would definitely order again. The steak was hot and crispy as heck and smothered in a very deliciously seasoned sausage gravy. Makes me want to try and recreate it at home. Hit the spot for sure. Now, again, I will say it's not fancy by any means. Think...Dennys but not franchise. My first visit to this family diner. Service was extremely friendly. It appears that there are many regulars here, the servers greeting them by name. I ordered the veggie omelette with two small pancakes. The "small" pancakes weren't really small, they were definitely more substantial than the usual side pancakes. The omelette was very good, with a generous amount of vegetables and cheese. The pancakes were excellent, they tasted homemade rather than from a mix like so many restaurants use. I was a little disappointed that they didn't serve butter but instead some vegetable oil spread. Real butter would have complimented those pancakes very well. The dining room was very clean. The owners have zero communication skills across themselves so while customers may not see that they suffer the employees do. And employees go with out pay, get called on their way to work and get told not to come in, get last minute schedule changes. They are coasting on loyal customers, but any ship run poorly will flounder. read more

Nice little mom n pop restaurant right off the highway. Prices were reasonable. Biscuit and gravy were good not great. The biscuit was a pre made puck and I think the gravy came out of a can or mix and was spiced up a little bit. There was not much sausage in it and it was pretty light. Little diner behind the Circle K gas station. Seat yourself and wait for a menu. Hubby and I shared their Country Skillet. Several Yelpers mentioned how good the skillets are. They are correct. Even though we split a skillet between two people they served us each a skillet with half portions on each. That was very nice! Their coffee is hot and they keep coming around to top off or refill your mug. Bathroom is clean. Overall the feel of this restaurant is like a diner we love to frequent in northern IN. We were heading north from Indy and looking for somewhere for a sitdown lunch. We pulled off and were heading to Bob Evans when I noticed Country Cafe to the left, with a packed parking lot. I had my hubby pull over so I could compare both placed on Yelp. After doing so, it was clear that we needed to head here. The food was amazing! I had the best Monte Cristo sandwich I've ever had, the vegetable soup was definitely homemade and so delicious. The service was great, there were lots of regulars, too. Country casserole, no thanks! Seat yourself, when a table becomes available. We ordered the Sunday special, country casserole. I had no idea it came with coffee and when I was asked if I wanted coffee I declined. Had the waitress indicated that it came with coffee I would've said yes please. We also didn't know that the country casserole came with sausage gravy and a biscuit. The country casserole specials came out rather quickly but the kids' French toast and bacon came much later. That's a big no no! In my mind the kids' meal should always be delivered first. This way you can get the kids started and then enjoy your meal when it arrives. The casserole had very brown edges which indicated that it was not fresh but had been made well in advance and had been sitting in a warming drawer for way too long. The casserole tasted horrible. I added some of the sausage gravy hoping that it would help but it did not. I did not finish my meal. It was that bad. The service was lousy and non attentive. I witnessed our server dropping food off at another table and heard the customers say we need silverware. The server disappeared and never came back. I cannot recommend this restaurant. read more

Well, an overall four-star rating didn't play out in our experience at all. The Sunday special was the country casserole, which my husband and I both ordered. He didn't realize it came with coffee and declined, and neither of us realized we were getting a biscuit and gravy. We also ordered a kid's French toast for our daughter, with bacon, which looked great, but I forgot to snap a photo. You see, it came out several minutes AFTER our meals which is just not a good idea. Bring the kid's meal first or all together. By the time we got it, she was ready to eat! No time for pictures. Well, clearly the casserole was just heated up, which is why it was so fast. It also didn't seem very fresh at all. We ended up putting gravy on the casserole which helped a bit. None of the food was very hot. Pretty disappointed although our daughter did devour her meal, so at least she was happy. This was one of those times when I think if we had ordered differently we might have had a better experience, but I wouldn't rely on the waitress to make it a better experience. When you walk in, you seat yourself, so if there is no table, you just have to watch for people to leave. read more

I was driving north on I65 this past Sunday and hit the Lafayette exit right at lunchtime. I wanted something non chain and well there may be one or two places that aren't and the Country Cafe is one of them. I hadn't been here before and decided to give it a try. I was glad I did. First the place was totally pack and I was worried it would take a long time but our food came out pretty quickly. It is older inside but don't let that fool you as the food was great and the service was too. For the first time ever I tried a monte cristo sandwich and it was fantastic. I really enjoyed the french toast and ham and cheese on it. I know I have heard some use jelly and this one doesn't and I really liked it. I upgraded to the fries and they were good too. The rest of my family enjoyed the meal as well. We also were pleasantly surprised by the price which was very reasonable for these days when $16 sandwiches seem to becoming the norm. read more

Super friendly and easy morning breakfast hot spot, cannot believe it took me a decade living two miles away to make it here! This is an immediate new podium finish taking all three trophies for pancakes, waffles, omelets, sausages, and even house made hot sauce that won us over. Couple friends and I tried Country Cafe out of laziness not wanting to get over to our typical Tick Tock brunch pick, quickly realized no loss at all sticking close to home, was crazy busy but a wonderful local shared his large table with us. Menus showed up showing off an incredible attention to ingredients, variety, and ensuring everyone will eat happy. The dreary outside sure does not give a right image to our experience here inside, enjoyable staff, basic old fashioned atmosphere, and home cooking to clean up any doubts. We ordered a good chunk of the best looking stuff, look at my photos! No comparison to Denny's, IHOP, or Panera Bread, this is the breakfast hit! Surprising how well everything was cooked despite the huge crowd, variety of dishes ordered, and speed our food was brought out. Can easily recommend for all the good eggs out there. read more

Close to home and the food (breakfast) and service is consistently good. Omelettes, skillets, everything is good. The food comes out fast, hot and to order. I've dined here for breakfast many many times over three years and avoided leaving a review to keep traffic down. If we have had to wait it was less than 5 minutes. I will admit over three years they have improved on a couple staples. Not burning toast! THATS HUGE. My omelette despite the fillings is always served perfectly. For me that's not overcooked and slightly medium inside. Just tell them what you prefer And the magic is they listen.. They are locally owned and employ Purdue and local folks and that means a lot to my family. I will say the gravy is usually bland and don't bother ordering biscuits and gravy because they serve the sacrifice biscuits with this. This visit the gravy was on spot and I topped my Merican fries with sausage gravy. I usually gauge biscuits and gravy with white pepper gravy just to be clear. ( Bob Evans is my only exception and GD my all time #1 biscuits and original gravy is unbeatable in this area! Xander wasn't feeling well so he just had hash browns and was hungry when he finished them. It was a huge order of perfectly golden hash browns. We have rarely had an issue that isn't immediately addressed and fixed. You would think the servers are part owners. Not perfect but really solid. Rest rooms are a wreck so bring Lysol if your are concerned with that. read more

As a party of 5 we got 2 skillets Western omelette (2 small pancakes on the side) [Really enjoyed!!!] Egg, ham and cheese breakfast sandwich Turkey bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich (chips on the side) There are a lot of ways to mix up the side options for the entree. For the omelettes you can get a choice of American fries + toast or two small pancakes. They tasted delicious and honestly were not small to me. My omelette tasted great with a lot of different ingredients - they had a ton of options too to choose from, depending on your tastes, vegetarian options as well. Those in my party enjoyed the skillets dish too. The sandwich was a decent size. Everyone was satisfied with the meal.
