Breakfast all day! Usually, this feature at a restaurant is lost on me, because I don't care for a big breakfast as my first meal of the day, or really, any time of the day. But I was visiting West Lafayette, and it was morning, and I was feeling a little "under the weather," as my Polish grandmother would say when she went too hard on the Bud Lites the night before. So breakfast at Triple XXX it was, because I could walk there from the Purdue campus, and this restaurant is a West Lafayette institution. I got the Triple XXX Breakfast Special: two over-medium eggs, bacon, fried potatoes and wheat toast. And it was good, you know? It was simple and hearty. I especially liked the fried potatoes. But what really took it over the top is when my server, who was incredibly friendly, told me that she could bring me some root beer jelly to go along with my wheat toast. Record scratch. Say what, lady? Root beer jelly? Yes, Triple XXX makes their own root beer jelly, and they also sell it by the jar. (I bought a jar.) They are famous for their root beer, which is sold nationwide, so I guess it makes sense that they would also make root beer jelly. It tastes exactly the way you would think it would. It tastes like root beer! It's delicious. The seating at this restaurant is interesting: All of the seats are bar seats, and they face the middle of the kitchen. There were no tables or booths that I saw, unless you wanted to go outside and sit at one of the picnic tables on the patio. I liked this seating setup, because I could watch the action happen before my very eyes. The black coffee was very good. It better be, at a place like this! This is the kind of greasy spoon restaurant where old timers stay a while with a cup of coffee and a newspaper. (There were three such people doing something like that when I visited, as a matter of fact.) It's just a comfortable part of the West Lafayette community. read more

My wife and I were in Lafayette dropping our daughter off for college and decided to go to Triple XXX diner since it was featured on DDD. I ordered a double cheeseburger with just ketchup to taste the burger alone. My wife ordered the peanut butter burger, and we ordered curly fries to share. My burger was great, the flavor and quality of the fresh ground steak makes a big difference in the flavor being so good. My wife is a fan of the peanut butter on the burger, and we both like the bun used. We both got root beer, which is a step above all other root beers I have tasted, which also probably has to do with quality ingredients. I am a fan of Triple XXX, and so is my wife. Best breakfast in Lafayette! Valerie served us up an amazing first time experience at this classic diner. Sign says they use beef tallow as their cooking oil! Love this spot. This is my second time here driving back from Chicago to Ohio and both times I have stopped here for lunch. The first time I got breakfast and a root beer. This time I got a burger and root beer. This isn't fancy food, this is country cooking at it's finest. The root beer is amazing. I should have asked about a root beer float, next time. You walk it and sit where ever you can. It it a long counter that wraps around and the wait staff walk inside it. The fries are yummy, and the burger was perfect for what I needed a solid meal since I hadn't eaten in almost 9 hours. Yep sounds like a personal problem. But hey at least the food here has been perfect both times. Maybe next time I will buy a shirt or at least some root beers to go with me. My burger was a true knife and fork meal. At least I am too old to be wearing my chili all over my beard and shirt. Highly recommend if in the area and it is only 5 miles off the interstate. Triple XXX root beer was king of the hill back when I was growing up in the 60's and 70's. Damn fine root beer, too! So imagine my (pleasant) surprise that there was but one Triple XXX restaurant that remained open, carrying the torch (as it were) for that great root beer! So on a nice and humid Saturday, me, hubby, and our little Puppy hopped in the car for a 2+ hr drive to West Lafayette IN for lunch! Of course - we got there - an old-style-diner-like building perched on a hill close to Perdue University in West Lafayette! We were seated in the outdoor "full service" tented section of the restaurant (covered) and perused the menu. After ordering the obligatory Triple XXX root beer (but of course - which came with free refills) we turned to the menu! Hubby ordered the Barney Burger - a 1/4 lb chop steak burger with cheese and grilled onions - as fyi, no burger comes with condiments- you get to "dress your own the way you like it" with condi's on the table. I ordered the Bernie Flowers All-Pro - a 1/4 lb chop steak with lettuce, tomato, onion (which I held) and Miracle Whip (yes!) on a toasty sesame bun. We both got curly fries (which were yummy, btw). Ok- first thoughts- the burgers - while fresh- were a bit dry. Hmm. The lettuce on my Bernie was a nice, crisp, and cold leaf. Yes! The tomato was freshly sliced and - honestly- looked like one I'd cut at home. Sweet! So why the 4 stars - I mentioned the meat was dry? Oh my. Yes, that's the sole demerit. But props to the fries and the awesome Root Beer! We enjoyed it - and just in the nick of time. No sooner did we finish up than a severe thunderstorm rolled into town! So we skedaddled to the car, hopped in, and drove thru drenching rain, super strong winds, some light hail - until we got outta Indiana on our way back to Illinois. Would we come again? Of course! I've been coming here since I was a baby, since 1992. My grandpa went to Purdue, then my dad, my uncle, and then me. I live in Wisconsin now, and I haven't been back to campus since I graduated in 2016. My dad is having surgery in Indy tomorrow, so I decided to make Purdue my halfway point for the night. I couldn't not come back to triple xxx. All my memories from being a little kid with my grandpa, to basketball games with my dad, and to eating here one last time after graduation came flooding back. Same great, classic diner food. some things never change. College kids working the counter making all the alumni's feel cool by listening to their stories, the ice cold rootbeer and the barstools that are way too close together. Cool place to try if you're in the Purdue/West Lafayette area. Wanted to try the peanut butter burger that was featured on Diner's, Drive-In, and Dives. The peanut butter was heavy and wasn't my cup of tea, but it's worth a try! Kind of expensive since no sides are included. The onion rings and breaded mushrooms are not really worth ordering on the side. Loved the root beer! It wasn't too sweet and loved that it was unlimited refills. The restaurant has limited seating, so be prepared to wait but enjoyed the diner feeling. Highly recommend walking to the place and parking somewhere else since parking is very limited. read more

This was my first visit to Triple XXX Family Restaurant. It did not disappoint. I enjoyed THE BERNIE FLOWERS ALL-PRO, A 1/4lb. chop steak, onion, lettuce, tomato with Miracle Whip on a toasty sesame bun. I prefer burgers well done and this was more like medium. So, if you're going here keep that in mind. Otherwise, it was a delicious burger. I also had onion rings, which were delicious. I chose root beer float to drink and it was probably the best root beer float I've ever had. I couldn't resist taking a 4 pack of root beer home. If you like peanut butter, this burger is for you, I thought it took away from the flavor you traditionally expect from burgers. I've been here a few times in the past 4 years, and it's pretty good . There's plenty of food. The root beer is sweet. The burgers, tenderloin, fries and eggs are all good. We sat outside since the dogs were with us. The seats were uncomfortable and extra cold with the plastic benches in a lattice design . Today was a special occasion and they did zero to help celebrate even though they said they would. The wait to be seated took an extremely long time. I went here before winter finals with a friend and I wasn't super impressed nor super let down. It's known as a Purdue campus tradition and being from California, I knew I needed to try it. It was cool being at a restaurant that Drew Brees would order at! Service was great, seating area is lunch counter style where you're sitting on stools. I liked how I was able to see the burgers being made. The burger was good it was a bit dry but had a good flavor. I think that it was pretty pricey for an average burger but I think that tradition also adds to the appeal. The fries were pretty good but the star was the root beer. We sat at the counter, Valerie was quick to greet us and bring water. She was friendly and suggestive with food choices since we told her we were out of and first time visitors. We had onion rings, fries, especially sweet potato with the marshmallow dipping saice. The cheese burger with grilled onions was delicious. Triple XXX is still the fun and iconic place to visit. The counter style seating and diner feel is unique for today's restaurants. The diner is still in good repair for an old facility. The staff does their best to keep the diner moving and counters clean. The staff is generally friendly and focused on business. I was impressed that Dylan was right on top of the refills and filling customer requests quickly. My wife loved the Duane Purvus burger. The combination of beef and peanut butter is unique and very tasty! It really is a must try on one of your visits. I strayed with the onion rings. The ring is a thin and almost stringy piece of onion. The onion had a nice mild taste and a thicker batter. The batter was a bit greasy. However the thin rings and coating were fried just enough to give it a nice crisp. Overall very good ring! The chili dog was not as tasty. I loved the grilled and halved dog. This helps to bring out the meat flavor. The bun was nice and steamed and soft. The dog was topped with chili. I assume it is the same chili as you would get in a bowl. The chili was almost all beans...which is odd for a chili sauce. There were some small pieces of beef in the sauce - but not much. The chili dog really tasted like a hit dog with a thin coating of baked beans. The hot dog was bit more predictable. The grilled dog and steamed bun were as expected. The added relish, onions and ketchup/mustard were right on. The long pickle spear that was laid a top the dog was a great accent! read more

The place is located near Purdue campus just down toward Wabash from Chauncey Hill Mall. The place is just an old style diner/fast food joint with organization and decor from akin to 1950s American drive-ins, service burgers and Root Beer (very good root beer) in a frosty glass. The root beer is unlimited. The crowd was basically the students and Purdue and mostly parents and prospective students at least at the time that we were there. Burgers are good but I didn't have the Duane Purvis (don't like Peanut Butter, sorry). Place gets busy so expect to wait. read more

Truly preserving the old school diner experience right down to the counter seating! This Diners Drive-In's and Dives famous spot near the Purdue campus gives you the greasy spoon experience without being anything you would associate with the negativity of "dive". Clean, quaint with super friendly service and fast turnaround. The burgers truly did taste great. Juicy with perfectly grilled onions and on the right kind of bun. The breakfast plates looked good too. I thought the portion of fries was a bit small considering you pay extra. My son got the chicken nuggets, which probably would have been better as a pressed/formed variety because small tenders can get dry. But the batter was excellent flavor-wise. We bought a mug because my husband loves diner mugs (and this mug is good sized!) they sell their root beer too. Definitely recommend stopping here. You get a 1950s feel with 2020s good food quality. You do get real cozy with people on both side of you. Try not to order anything that require multiple plates. You'll run out of room. And after a great PSU victory, I was seated within a crowd of Purdue fans, which was ok. They were nice. This visit consisted of another root beer and the "Duane Purvis" burger, which is the peanut butter burger. I am a huge fan of a PB burger. And if you've never had PB on a burger, you are missing out. This was pretty good, in comparison to some of the other PB burgers I've had. Next time, I would get it without the lettuce and add bacon.
