Got the chicken fried chicken without gravy. Chicken breast was dry, flavorless and tough. Blackeye peas were good but green beans were so over cooked. I generally love southern green beans but these were awful. I don't write bad reviews but this place needs to improve food or stay away. read more

Great little spot for country cooking just outside of Calloway. Very busy at your typical eating times, but clears in and out in off peak. Didn't mind the wait because so much to look at in their gift shop. Dare you to not buy some sort of jam...and only place around to get real stone ground grits to take home and cook up yourself like your grandmama used to make. Could very well be what the Southern Favorite Cracker Barrel was modeled after.... True to it's name -good Country Home-Cooking! We expected an average quality dinner (after eating a mediocre lunch locally) but this was a pleasant surprise. A very positive experience. Not fancy, just good food. Food: Our meals were served quickly and were tasty. Hot biscuits & little corn meal muffins are brought out after ordering. The muscadine jam is authentic but the hulls may not please some folks. The fried chicken was served piping hot and crispy; Chili was good, and the sides were very good. (Try the green beans if you want real home-cooking, not just warmed-up canned or frozen veggies.) The peach crisp is only $4 and is highly recommended by locals. True southern cooking. Kudos to the cook! Good coffee, even the decaf. Service 5/5. Our server, Kimberly, was great-friendly, efficient, and helpful. Food came quickly. For those who, like myself, are highly allergic to latex do not eat here... after we asked the waitress to please not wear latex gloves while serving us she proceeded to let us know that the entire kitchen staff uses latex gloves to prepare all of the food. Think Cracker Barrel but a much more limited menu. The kids menu is very limited with cheese burger, grill cheese or Turkey or ham sandwich. They no longer serve chicken fingers. They seemed very understaffed as waitresses were having to cover large amounts of tables. Our food took 30 plus minutes and people who sat down later received their food before us. This place gets 4 stars for how beautiful the location is, and how fun the store is, as well as the fun cozy theme of the restaurant. But the food is 3 star. I did enjoy going here, and I would go again, as the atmosphere and service was great, but now not expecting the best quality food. I got shepherds pie, which I do understand is not a southern dish persay, but the vegetables used in it were clearly canned and not fresh. When I think of country cooking, one of two images comes to mind. One is of a bounty of fresh vegetables straight from the garden, bowls and platters of green beans, corn, tomatoes, carrots, lettuce, okra, slipper peas and all the other wonderful vegetables we grew up with. The other is less healthy with overcooked vegetables soaked in butter, meats deep fried in lard. When we stopped by for dinner I was hoping for the former, but Country Kitchen is closer to the latter. Appetizers and entrees were mostly fried. The former included sweet potato fries, fried green tomatoes, crispy onion rings, fried pickles and catfish fingers and entrees included Southern fried chicken, chicken fried chicken, country fried steak, fried catfish and smothered pork chops. The meatloaf had a tomato molasses glaze, not exactly health food. Vegetables were straight from the can and Southern style green beans glistened from the grease they were cooked with. Even the fruit cup was sour. With all the fried food and all the grease, I just didn't find it that good. The biscuits were decent enough, but it was obvious they had been cooked earlier in the day. And I can't say I'm a huge fan of muscadine jelly, a signature item. It was difficult to find healthy and disappointing because it's got great potential. The concept tries to mimic Cracker Barrel, right down to the country store selling Callaway Gardens kitsch, but the restaurant is corporate cooking at its laziest and most basic. Batter it and throw it in a fryer. Open a can and heat it up. Callaway Gardens needs to reboot and offer customers something better. The best thing about Country Kitchen is the view of Pine Mountain, especially as the sun sets. read more

Finding ourselves in Georgia for the past few months, we felt we hadn't really whetted our appetite of "good southern food" but was recommended this restaurant to help our quest! The store itself is charming with lots of fun souvenirs and gizmos to look at, however the restaurant looked a little worn. Upon sitting down, we decided to get the chicken and waffles and chicken fried chicken. After ordering, they brought out a basket of biscuits and corn muffins which were absolutely delicious!! They were warm, soft, and very tasty. The cherry jam that came with it was fresh and perfect to add on top of a little butter. When the entrees came out we were both amazed by how tasty and juicy the chicken was! Since my chicken and waffles was served with fried breast, I anticipated it to be a little on the dry side, since most fried chicken breast dry out easily. Not here. It was juicy and tasty. The waffles were sweet and fluffy and didn't even need syrup on top of it. The sweet potato fries were very well cooked and season. The chicken fried chicken was also delicious! Well breaded and season, smothered in a delicious gravy that didn't overwhelm the spices of the chicken. Where this restaurant falls is the green beans. It was very over cooked and mushy and the taste of the bean was overwhelmed by the bacon it was cooked with. Additionally, the waffle was a little soggy from the chicken and I wish it could've been more solid and a little more crispy than it was. Though the service was a little slow, it was overall a good dining experience. And a great view if you get a window seat! read more

WE DID NOT EAT HERE. We just went to the store and bought some items. The menu was tantalizing, but still not something we were willing to pay for. So we skipped on that, but bought a few items in this shop. The okra they had was $1 a pound. Holy Okra! then they had green peppers at .50 cents a pound. Holy Peppers! Then they had some interesting "salsa" which I think is more like chutney- like pineapple salsa, peach salsa ... they were 3.50 for a small jar and we were more than happy to buy a few to bring back home for us and for some friends. We tried several when we got home, and all in all, everyone was entertained and satisfied. They also have several items here, but I bit overpriced in my opinion. They have several "bbq" sauces in regular sized bottles at about 7-8 bucks a pop. MMmmmm..??? I iked it though. However, in my opinion, it's not up to par to people's expectations. Really good wish they had pictures with their menu good place to go with family amazing views of the mountains from the tables, I wish they had more space to put tables because it does get crowded during the holidays. The store in front has a lot of good presents for those people you forget to buy for last minute. I do not recommend the pot roast it sounds good but it is kinda flavorless and you don't get a good portion for what you pay. The meatloaf on the other hand is very good. Unfortunate that a 1 star rating is required . Aside from the service , this place is horrible . Our waitress was awesome however , the wait was insane for a Monday at 11:30 . After much confusion on the whole get a table process was concluded , approximately 30 minutes , we ordered burgers that were absolutely terrible . Dried out , overcooked with no seasoning and overpriced . The fried green tomato was a grease bomb an not even edible . The very sweet waitress took our complaint to the manager who gave us a slap in the face 15% off !!! I confirmed with Callaway Gardens that this restaurant would be open until 5pm today (Christmas) as stated on the Christmas Day Dining webpage. Arrived at 3:40pm and nope, they closed at 3pm. A person finally came to the door when she realized I was not going to stop knocking. She could not have cared less, just kept pointing at the time posted next to the door (they normally close at 3pm, which is why I confirmed the closing time before I began my 45-minute drive to get there.) She didnt even care when i showed here the website that says they are open until 5pm. Terrible info on the website and non-existent customer service. Find another place to eat! read more

Well I didn't care for the food unfortunately. The chicken pot pie is pretty but it's got some sort of herb in it that makes me think it is dressing. The black eyed peas were spicy. This place use to be somewhere I looked forward to going but it has gone down hill. We decided to take a fall ride in the Jeep and get some good breakfast last week and sadly we found that this place has increased prices and decreased the quality of food they put out. Atmosphere only gets you so far which is why you get 2 stars but lost 3 on bland food with ridiculous prices. If you're going to charge someone $$$$ for some pancakes they better taste good and they don't. I would pay $15 for pancakes considering I'm sitting on a mountain side looking into a valley of beautiful fall colored trees but what we got was substandard at best. Save yourself the drive and money until management can turn this place around. Maybe next fall we'll give it another shot. read more

She never asked us if we wanted to sit by the window or in their patio area. We assumed there were no tables available by the windows. We were given our drinks 10 minutes after ordering them, and we were never asked if we were ready to order (up to this point the manager was working with us). Then nothing. We sat waiting for at least 15 more minutes. While we were waiting, 2 families came in (all were White) and the manager asked them if they wanted to sit by the window or patio area. They were promptly seated by the windows in order to take in the beautiful view. After a while a waitress asked if anyone was helping us. We said "no". We told her we wanted to leave and just wanted to pay for our drinks. Another waitress later told us we did not have to pay for the drinks. The manager did not come over. We had to pass the manager on the way out, and she did not say a word. We made our complaint to the management staff at Callaway Gardens. read more

Country fried steak was bland, collard greens were old and tough, fried green tomatoes were all fried stuck together and had no flavor. Strawberry shortcake was as hard as a wheel off of a toy car. What a nice experience during our FDR Little White House visit. Our afternoon lunch had a lovely view and many interesting treats. The fried chicken of course takes 20-25 minutes but tasted very good. The fried yellow squash and scalloped corn added to the meal. Since they make and sell Muscadine jam I requested some for my biscuit and later bought a jar. This is rather hidden just west of the FDR STATE Park on 190 and 27. The building is original CCC construction with a fantastic slate roof and Mtn. views. If we could go back for breakfast i'd like to try tomato gravy and Red Speckled Grits. read more

OMG!! the worst meal ever. There were 3 of us in our party. Our appetizer was fried onion rings..looked like they had sat around all day waiting to be served. Way to greasy and not crispy at all. All three of us had mashed potatoes which we couldn't eat they were AWFUL, my country fried steak was good and so was the okra. The hamburger steak and gravy (meat was not cooked) and the meatloaf were not fit for human consumption. We told the waitress and she said she was sorry and hoped we had a nice day!!!! First off, the view is wonderful! We went here for lunch on a Saturday. I had the meatloaf with collard greens and blackeyed peas. It was very good, but a bit greasy. My husband had the country fried steak with mashed potatoes and Lima beans. It was also good, but the gravy was a bit thick on the potatoes. The portions are huge!! You get a ton of food. We also tried the chili, it was warm and delicious! Our guests had the Brunswick stew (said it was good) and chicken tenders with fries (also typically good ole fried food). As this restaurant evidently has its share of visitors from far and wide, one would hope that the genre of Southern cuisine would be well represented. It was--but in name only. There's almost nothing as quintessentially Southern as smothered pork chops, so I was happy to see them on the menu. When properly done, thin pork chops are lightly coated with a dusting of flour and lightly fried. Onions are sauteed in the drippings, flour is added for a roux then a broth or plain water is added to make a gravy. Finally, the pork chops are added and "smothered" in the gravy; the dish is cooked slowly either stove top or in the oven. The resulting chops are fork-tender, much like Swiss Steak. At the Country Kitchen, the chops were indeed thin, coated in flour and fried. But smothered they weren't. Rather, they were plated, the gravy from a mix was merely poured over them. The chops were tough and flavorless as was the frozen-then-fried okra. The Southern Style Green Beans were excellent, however; rich with bacon they would make a Southerner's heart sing. But green beans do not a dinner make, unfortunately. Service was shoddy; the waiter dropped items more than once and would absent himself from the table for abnormally long lengths of time leaving my empty glass on the table yearning to be filled--it was a long wait. I was a chef, trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. I also learned to cook at my Southern grandmother's knee when I was a lad, so I know whereof I speak (or write, as the case may be).
