Countryside Bar-B-Que is the quintessential BBQ experience, pretty much as close to 'in the middle of nowhere' as you can get in North Carolina and just good southern hospitality and cooking. For the massive size of the parking lot, our group of 5 was a bit worried that we weren't going to have anywhere to sit. Once you walk in, you realize that there's plenty of space for everyone. The space is huge, and it's all seat yourself. The menu is huge and filled with your favorites, multiple proteins in different styles with different sauces. Me personally? I chose chicken tenders because I'm 5 years old and proud of it. I ordered sides of green beans, mac n cheese, and hushpuppies. The hush puppies were a tiny bit sweet for my taste, but other than that, every part of my meal was excellent. Honey Mustard for chicken tenders was great, and the mac n cheese was made very well. The price for that whole platter was extraordinarily affordable. Noise level was kept down, service was super nice and attentive. Would absolutely return next time I'm around this area. My fiancé and I had a wonderful lunch at Countryside BBQ today. The restaurant was recommended by our wedding venue for catering. When we arrived, we were promptly greeted and seated. The manager was more than helpful in answering all our questions and helped us order a variety of meats and sides to try. As a vegetarian, I'm usually disappointed by side dishes but Countryside BBQ did not let me down. My fiancé really enjoyed the shrimp, chicken, and steak he tried while I fell in love with the Mac and cheese. Service was also extremely fast. Wouldn't you know it, discovered this place the day before vacation ended...darn! I'm 77 yrs old, been eating pot roast my whole life and NEVER tasted any as scrumptious as theirs....it melted in your mouth, the flavor was perfect. AND it came with homemade mashed potatoes, delicious green beans, sweet corn, cole slaw and 2 rolls! It was so delicious that I ordered a second portion to take home for dinner. My vegetarian granddaughter loved her Mac & cheese & homemade hush puppies. She ordered another to take home also. And don't even get me started about their pies....ummmm good stuff. We stopped here on the way back to Burnsville from Morganton. I ordered the Smoked Chicken Salad Croissant with French Fries - I asked if I could substitute Onion Rings for an uncharge, but the sandwich with fries is $8.49 and to add onion rings was another $3.99. I opted to stick with the sandwich and fries. Defiantly not the best chicken salad - had lots of dark meat and only one grape, which was whole. Don't expect regular cut fries, as these were more like potato chunks - and were quite good, just not what I was expecting when the menu said home fries. My husband ordered the popcorn shrimp with baked potato and pasta salad. I ate some of the pasta salad, and it was very good. He said the shrimp had way too much breading and the baked potato tasted like it had gotten cold and been rewarmed in the microwave. My friend ordered the grilled chicken breast, with fried okra and baked potato. He said everything was delicious. We had coconut pie and chocolate peanut butter pie for desert. The coconut pie was very good, but a tiny amount of coconut custard with a huge topping of whip cream. I would not order again. Chocolate peanut butter pie was amazing. Hushpuppies were delicious. Waiters were quick, attentive and friendly - they bring you your own picture of ice tea and your own coffee pot - very nice. Lesson learned - don't order chicken salad or fried popcorn shrimp at a BBQ place. Give it a try - I would defiantly eat there again if I'm in the area. read more

I chose buttered corn, green beans, and Collard greans. My southern desires come from my heritage. The best part of my experience were indeed the hush puppies. Yummy! Small oblong puppies fried to a nice brown crisp! Some of the best I have found. On another note their sauces....I was raised in Eastern NC most of my life. I come to appreciate good vinegar based sauce. Their version, though it was not my favorite, it was all I had. I didn't try the sweet sauce. However, my husband loves HONEY MUSTARD sauce. One of the servers highly recommended for him to try their version. Hmmm good he says! He LOVED it! Me being a shrimp lover, I have certain preferences when it comes to shrimp. Their shrimp was heavily breaded with seasoning and black pepper. I was not fond of the heavy seasoned batter. I'm more leaning toward the "fish camp" (seafood restaurant) style of breading. All in all the food was worth every penny which is my golden rule when reviewing and eating out. We are not from Marion but like to shop at the GO Grocery Food Outlet on the other side of town so when we visit we stop at different places to eat. How many times did we pass this one up looking for greener pastures? Finally we stopped and tried it and it won us over on the first visit. Stopped in for a late dinner. Never been here before, but have wanted to try it since every time I pass by the parking lot always seems to be packed. I did check out the menu online prior and the Chicken Salad sounded amazing. Upon arriving there was a sign to seat myself. Good amount of booth seating which is a plus. Very casual attire by looking at other patrons in a homely atmosphere. I ordered the chicken salad and it was superb. The perfect amount of nuts and berries and not over done with the mayo. Just the way I like it. Another plus was what ever you drink, they provide a pitcher to your table. Awesome idea so you don't have to keep asking for refills constantly. Overall a good place. There's a few ways you can go in the restaurant biz. There's the "let's make fancy food with rare ingredients like pink ostrich eggs and macerated squirrel nut zippers" or you can go the "let's get some good, simple ingredients like ribs and chicken and pork and make it taste really good" route. Countryside chose the latter and I'm glad they did. I started with the fried corn nuggets. They came out in a flash and were hot, fresh and tasty. The ribs could have been cooked down a little longer but had great flavor and were just about fall-off. The hush puppies were fantastic, the eastern Carolina crescent style, nice and crispy outside and full of awesome inside. I got my tea half and half because, you know, my figure and the waitress brought a mini pitcher so I could refill myself which was cool. I tipped myself a dollar for doing a good job. My first side was the Carolina red slaw and it did not disappoint. Bitter tangy and sweet with a good crunch to the slaw. My second side was...well dammit has anyone ever had really good fried okra. I don't know why I ordered it. It wasn't Countryside's fault, it was as good as any okra I've had, but well...it was okra. The kitchen was quick and food was coming out at a regular pace. They've got a good crew back there. The restaurant was pretty busy on a Friday night. By the time I left, they were parking next door in the Beam Funeral Services and Crematory (there's an obvious joke there about sharing ovens that I'm not going to make because I'm more couth than that). If I find myself in the neighborhood again I will definitely come back and recommend you give these fine folks a try. read more

My pork barbecue was moist, but had little smoke flavor. Only one type of sauce was brought out. The sides were not much better. The collards had very little flavor. The mac and cheese and rolls were not homemade. On top of this, the waitresses were not friendly and in a hurry -even though the place was not very busy. This was one of the worst meals I've ever had this misfortune of paying for, and we tried a lot of food; ribs, pulled pork, brisket, greens, mac and cheese, hush puppies and other sides. The brisket was decent, I wouldn't go as far as calling it good, but it is the only thing that saved them from a one star review. The greens were the most heinous offenders! I'm reasonably certain that they were dumped from a can onto my plate, they were cold and had no flavor whatsoever. The mac and cheese wasn't much better, pretty sure it was Velveeta. Enough of the miserable sides, you get Q for the meat! Unfortunately, the meat was nothing more than mediocre. The ribs were the fattiest I've had, which, would have been fine if they had good flavor. They didn't. I'm not sure they are familiar with dry rub. All I'll say about the brisket is that it was fine. The pulled pork also lacked flavor of any type. A place like this can only survive in a market where the competition is equally bad, and according to the folks that recommended Countryside, the other BBQ joints are terrible. Do yourself a favor and skip this place, you'd be better off grabbing a pizza. read more

It was 86 degrees inside the restaurant, that is what our waitress told us , no temperature change at all, they were short staff, guys that were wiping down tables was bringing out food ( ours included ). This place is a gem. Recently moved to Marion and have been trying out different restaurants in the area. The food here is good. The service is awesome. And the ambience gives you a relaxed country feel. No pretense is found on these premises. I know Zaxbys is a new fixture in town...but if it is chicken tenders you are craving...Countryside BBQ is the place to get them. Wondering why they do not offer boxed meals of chicken tenders in the same manner as fast food options to pick up and go?!! I'd be all over that! The pork is good, their sides are fresh and homemade. Have not ventured to have desserts yet...but that is ok...I have eft happily content with a full belly the five times I have eaten here already.
