I can't believe it took me 3 years to find this gem in town - their buttermilk pancakes don't need butter or syrup. I eat them like a complete monster, they are so good. Sometimes I grab a coffee "to go", other times I meet friends or work associates for a late breakfast or lunch. Often Courageous is a relaxing annex to my home office. Generously placed outlets along the window counters make for good people watching and a pleasant view of Scoville Park while getting some projects done. I am so disappointed. I got the survivor cupcake, which is a funfetti cupcake. I was so excited to try it after walking by the bakery many times. I picked the survivor cupcake because I love funfetti. Aside from the rainbow frosting, the first thing I noticed was that the cake was extremely dense. Maybe the cupcake was stale or it had too much flour in it. Undeterred, I went on to eat the cupcake. The cake had no flavor. I would even go as far as to say it was almost savory. So much potential to be 5 star but they keep missing the mark with me. I just recently moved into the neighborhood and found Courageous bakery and have been getting takeout every weekend since my discovery. The food is actually really good BUT they have yet to give me my full order correctly. Every. Single. Time. something is wrong. It's so annoying and frustrating. Today I've had enough and probably won't be back. It's not cheap enough for me to keep turning the other cheek. I stopped in today and ordered 3 breakfast items, and I should know better by now, but I did not check my bag before I left. I got home and realized my over priced pancakes were missing! My husband called the restaurant for a refund and I have no idea when or if I'll get it. Dear Courageous Bakery owners, if you bother reading this, please have a staff meeting. We had breakfast at our favorite Courageous Bakery with guests on last Tuesday,August 2. It was extremely busy and they were short staffed. The girls that were there were extremely courteous and helpful. They made sure that our orders were promptly served and complete. It made for a great, comfortable visit with our friends. They had 3 different croissant options and we had the chocolate hazelnut and then also had the M & M cookie and maple bacon raised donut. I am giving it five stars in support of its mission, a cafe run by survivors of cancer. So definitely courageous is the perfect name for those having fought a hard won battle. It was on the way to the station from our hotel when we were staying in Chicago, which is why we thought to stop in there for breakfast one day. The cafe was busy, brightly lit and very busy. The service was rather shoddy and slow, but the people behind the till were very nice. They have a big menu to choose from, so it's not easy. Perhaps, they should trim down the menu a little? Also, it is not very cheap or delicious. Anyway, in either case, as I said, I would heartily like to support them in their mission, so buy a cupcake from them or two when you are in the neighbourhood, at least! Brunch delivery today via Caviar: first observation, we normally have to reheat delivery these days. Didn't have to today. What we had: Blueberry pancakes: good 2 cake portion, lots of blueberries in the cakes and on the side. Tasty batter. Side of house turkey sausage: homemade, nice balanced flavor, a touch of sweetness actually which was nice, cooked well, not too dense Choripapa: basically a chorizo bowl/ hash type entree. Potatoes were cooked well and seasoned nicely. The poblanos brought a little heat which was nice. They make a good verde but I actually didn't use too much. Side note: if you get something with toast, get the house strawberry jam. It's tastes like a strawberry cupcake in a jam, super tasty! And they tossed in a few doughnut holes for good measure which was unexpected but appreciated. A little dense but tasty nonetheless. The food is good, maybe a little greasy, but the drinks are overpriced and there are no refills.

I'll start with what went right. When we walked in the door, we were met by the manager with a welcome and a smile. She handed us menus and encouraged us to order when we were ready. That was really the best part of the experience. It was close to 11:00, and we were looking for breakfast and coffee close to our Airbnb. After placing our order, we sat down with one drip coffee, a cinnamon roll, an orange juice and our donut holes. The drip coffee my GF ordered was not bad, free refills from an insulated carafe near the counter. The cinnamon roll tasted freezer burnt, and the icing separated into a creamy slime that she scraped to the side. Several minutes after we sat down, a waitress came to tell us that they were out of steel cut oatmeal and offered the option of substituting something else from the menu. Nothing appealed to my companion, so they credited our bill. She came back a second time, noticed that we had been given the small OJ instead of the large that we ordered, and brought another juice. I had ordered the Salted Caramel Pretzel latte, and it was definitely salty! I ended up cutting it with some of the free drip coffee and it was...ok. After 40 minutes, I still did not have my food (traditional breakfast, with bacon). Everyone around us that had come in after we did was eating. So I commented to my GF that I would give it five more minutes, then go see what was going on. Five minutes came and went, so I walked up to the counter to inquire. I was first told that my eggs were ready, and they were cooking the rest. I said that, based on everything else that had gone wrong, I'd like to cancel, get a refund, and go elsewhere. Suddenly, my plate of food appears from the kitchen, the manager holds it out to me and says, "Here it is. Don't you want it? I would hate to waste it." I asked again to cancel. She asks if I want it to go. No. We are traveling. Walking, heading shortly to the airport. I don't want it to go. So rather than doing what I asked, she insists I take the food, and offers us a couple of free cupcakes to go. I take the plate and return to our table. Food was ok. By this point, I really didn't want it, and didn't want to be there. The manager comes to our table carrying a large sack and says she was giving us six complimentary cupcakes. Again, apologizing. I pushed my food around the plate a bit longer, and we decided to leave. While I was in the restroom, my GF returned the cupcakes, thanking the manager for the gesture. Again, telling her that we would be traveling all day and did NOT want to manage a big sack of cupcakes through the CTA, two airports and a shuttle bus. Through all of this, Courageous has a sign prominently posted near their counter that says if you aren't happy, please let us know and give us a chance to make it right. While efforts were made, we still left unhappy with the experience (hence, this one star review). My advice to Courageous and their management: Listen to your customers. When someone asks for a refund, don't offer them cold food or to go food. Listen to what is being requested and do what is best for the customer, not what is best for you. read more

I visited today for the first time at the urging of my teen who has been a fan since this corner bakery opened. I love the location and used to visit Great Harvest & Red Hen all the time at this corner. The space is awesome- bright, huge, really open and welcoming vibe with a friendly staff. We ordered coffee, a muffin and a few donuts- fair warning, the donuts are actually small cakes. They are massive! We got 3 vanilla bean donuts thinking we'd each have one but ended up all sharing 1 donut. The left-overs will feed my family for a week. I can't wait to return for soup & sandwich. The menu is huge and there were vegetarian options. I hope this place sticks around for many years. read more

I came here mostly to try their cupcakes but was surprised by their cinnamon roll! Their cinnamon roll was the best one I've ever had! The bread was so incredibly soft and fluffy with some of the best tasting icing I've had on a baked good. After a couple seconds in the microwave it practically melted in my mouth. It was very big as well and quite filling. The cupcakes were good but nothing in comparison. The pink velvet didn't taste like anything and was quite plain. The survivor cupcake had a much better flavor profile with vanilla filling inside the cake. The cupcakes overall though were too dense and overwhelming for my taste, but I could see others enjoying them. The cinnamon roll alone deserves the 5/5. read more

I usually love this place, but I have to give the mI'd ranking for their recent addition of ice cream. I was excited to try it, but when I ordered the orange, the flavor wasn't great and there were orange seeds and large pieces of pulp in my ice cream. It tasted so bitter I had to throw it away. my husband's ordered strawberry and the woman couldnt make it properly. she gave us a half filled cone and the rest in a cup half melted and still not mixed properly. I enjoy going to Courageous Bakery. It is a huge space that's great to work in or to meet up with friends. I recently went to Courageous and I ordered their Turkey and Gouda sandwich on a croissant and a Lemon Blueberry cupcake. Turkey and Gouda Sandwich: The sandwich was delicious! I did not like their homemade chips. I'll pass on that next time. The turkey was roasted (which was a nice surprise) and tender. Lemon Bluberry Cupcake: The cupcake was moist. It was a good cupcake, but it didn't taste much like lemon or blueberry. It was sweet in a good way. The frosting was delicious! It was whipped lightly and melted in your mouth. Space: The bakery has big windows that lets in a lot of natural light. There is a lot of seating because it's a big space. There are also plenty of outlets. Some spaces don't always have that option so that is a plus. Well worth a visit or two. :-). The bakery also has a mission. Cute cafe when we dined in before covid. Now we get pickups. I normally order their skillets and it does not disappoint. My kids normally have their omlettes which are good. Hubby tries different items on their menu. It doesn't disappoint and you can pickup cupcakes while you're there. I just had the worst experience with courageous cafe. After placing a $45 order for pickup and waiting 1.5 hours I was told by the owner I will give you a refund. No explanation, nothing, but a receipt saying refund. They were busy, disorganized and customers were canceling orders left and right. I was over an hour in so I asked if they were still making my order. The owner went to "check" came back and told me she refunded my order. RUDE AF!!!! no apology, no explanation, no common decency. Now during this time I saw another customer tell the owner your staff is rude and I will not come. This same lady who was rude to me begged this woman to please give them another try. Me she didn't have the common courtesy of even an explanation. The only difference between that other customer and myself was the color of our skin. Being Latina and seeing chilaquiles in an American menu/bakery had me a little suspect. They were DELICIOUS!!!! The salsa verde was perfectly seasoned and the spice level was on point. The tortilla chip remained super crunchy and crispy 'till the end. How they managed to keep the tortilla chip texture and NOT be oily at all was very impressive!
