It was one of the easiest and chillest barbershop vibes (despite a young crying kid getting his haircut). Barbara was fast, efficient, and friendly. He did a great job, and I highly recommend a skill, speed, simplicity, and overall look. I like that they get straight down to business. It's nice to feel like a customer, versus being a third wheel - as certain barbershops are like social lounges amongst barbers. Other places can spend too much time under the minute details, which the overall cut isn't even all that great. Think this will now be my preferred barbershop from now on. read more

Decent haircuts, sub-par service. Toward the end of my haircut I asked the barber if he could trim a little more off, and he threw a fit and threatened to charge me double. Really? I come in and wait in line for however long - for 4 people to get their haircut before me on this occasion- and he couldn't give me 5 more minutes to try a different length? I always tip 20% (including this time), but I'm not very interested in going back. Maybe he was having a bad day, but then again he has always been terse in my experience. These guys know what they're doing with clippers AND scissors! I've been in Boston for about 10+ years now and have cycled through many bad haircuts/barbers during my time here but never with Rino and the other barbers in his shop. They're all super friendly, professional and make all their customers comfortable. Not sure about you but since I have super straight (Asian) hair, having a barber that does clipper and scissor work well is definitely a must. Most barbers can do a fade and spend a lot of time with clippers but just hack away with scissors, making your head look like a pineapple or a deformed tetris block. Rino holds himself and his other barbers at a high standard so you know you're going to get a good cut. Hope he and his team are doing well during COVID19 times and I definitely can't wait to get a haircut again after all this is over. read more

I've been living in Boston for 5 years now and I recently found this barber shop a few months back. This is by far the best barber that $20 will get you. All the barbers are super friendly and accommodating. I've been to a few barbers up and down comm Ave, one in brighton and one in Chinatown and they have all been subpar. I had a barber that didn't cut the hair covered by my ears. I had one barber that didn't cut the back left side of my head. I've even had one barber that made my hair look like it was balding. I've experienced none of that at university barber. He's very efficient too. Haircut takes maybe 10 or so minutes. If you need a haircut and are on a budget these guys are very highly recommended. Do yourself a favor and avoid the cheap barbers further down comm. read more

Real old-fashioned barber shops are getting thin on the ground these days rather like the hair on my scalp is too. So it's always a novelty to get your hair trimmed at one rather than somewhere like Supercuts. This place is a true throwback to the 1950s, with almost no modern fittings and an archaic cash register which totally beguiled me. I wouldn't recommend this place for ladies or for guys with complicated hair requirements, but if like me you just need a quick cheap trim then it's perfect and the staff are friendly too. The lady who cut my hair even one step further than I expected and whipped out a cut-throat razor on me. A little scary but it at least proves it's a genuine barber shop. That and the stinging industrial aftershave that she threw on me too - I still smell of 1955 right now! read more

This is not a good barber shop. Its dirty with hair everywhere. It seems they have not cleaned the shop in ages. The service is gruff and no attention is paid to what the customer is actually asking for. I wanted a simple buzz cut and asked the barber a number of times to be gentle and not drive the machine into my skin. He bruised my head and refused to listen. Then when I told him he had left strands of hair in the front of my head. He said its because I did not let him dig his buzzer into my head. This is the first and last time I will visit them. Never saw them clean their tools even once. Stay away. read more

My barber shop for well over 10 years. No longer convenient to where I work or live, it doesn't matter. This shop is the real McCoy. Professional, friendly service and reasonable prices the reason there are so many regular customers. Some of the men I have met here have been coming to this barber shop since it opened. They also open early in the morning which is very helpful. Recently they installed flat screen televisions at each barber chair. This place does an awful haircut. He basically grabbed a shaver, ran it around my head and then used some scissors to try to straighten everything out, but it was already too late. While doing the haircut he also tried to insinuate that I must be rich because I was attending college and kept on saying things that were borderline racist. If you look at the previous reviews, most were from before 2012. Maybe this place used to be good, but right now I would not recommend it to anyone. In summary: The guy paid no attention to what I wanted, my hair came out too short, and there were even some bald spots. Please avoid this place if you can. read more

Absolutely a great place. Haircuts are inexpensive enough, and they do a great job. Only $16 for a haircut, they're quick, usually not too much of a wait, and I'm always happy at the job they do. Whether you get the guy all the way on the left who most people seem to wait for, the woman or the younger guy who likes to talk about sports, they all do a fairly good job. I've been going here since I started going to BU in 2000. I graduated in 2004 and live in Somerville now, but I'll still come into the city to go to this place. I'll keep going here because it's a great combination of quality and a relatively low expense. Excellent Barber Shop, I highly recommend the University Barber Shop to anyone as there is nothing quite like the experience of a great hair-cut at a real Barber Shop from a top notch professional barber. I come from the North Shore and head in early on Saturday mornings. I Especially like to go after a big night of Boston Sports. The place is located in the heart of Red Sox Nation and is constantly filled with energy from the games played the night before or anticipation from the matchups of the day. The new flat screens keep you entertained when there is a wait. These barbers are good and always get busy quickly so get there on the early side. Even the price of the cut is very reasonable; and this is why I always give a good tip. They treat each customer as if they are the only one in the place, dedicating the right amount of time to each person. You never feel like you are just being rushed out of there. This barber shop is as good as it gets! Right off comm wealth ave this place is great! I have been here now 2 times. Both times were great. Its easy and cheap! I have always been a walk in. So getting in is easy. A buzz cut will run about $14. They take good care of you even if it is just a buzz cut! A normal cut will run you about $16 +$4.00 for a beard trim or you can do just a beard trip for $8.00. So you can save some cash there! The staff has always been super friendly to me. easy to deal with and very professional. Your in and out rather quickly, its cheap, the staff is great! What more can you ask for? Plus it's great location if you live near or to go BU college. (If not take the B train on the green line for easy access) Great 5/5! It's always hard finding a good barbershop. University barbers used to be my go to place. I got a couple good haircuts but then the quality and price went downhill. One barber kept asking me the same questions repeatedly as though he kept forgetting what I told him. He acted like he forgot how to count money when he was giving back change. Bangs are cut at angles and overall the cut doesn't feel worth it. It's like the quickest haircut you will ever get for $20. read more

A honest old fashion barbershop. At $16 its a little steep for what you get which is very very basic, but its the city, a happy meal will cost you $6, so what are you going to do. However with that said my experience was horrible. I got the third barber and was not ready to describe what I wanted in any other language but English. My bad. This also prohibited any conversation which is what one should expect from a barbershop, right? But its a global world, so I can deal with that. What I can't accept is the quality of the hair cut. I'm Asian and if cut too short my hair just sticks straight out. So the first thing I say, is, "I'm Asian, my hair is really coarse, I want it cut short, but if you cut it too short its going to stick straight out and that is not what I want." Well a ninja second later I had a #1 lop of hair clippered off around my left ear. The damage being done, I just went with it. I mean my only option at that point was to ask for a bowl cut which at my employment stage is not really an option. So I ended up with a buzz around the sides and some minimal lay-down length up top. I looked like a Marine in need of a haircut for a couple days. That was cool. I attracted a whole different set of the females. But now a week in, the transition from the top to the sides just sticks straight out and flaps wind. I'm like Bozo the clown but with black prickly hair instead of the orange curly locks. I'd go back in for a re-cut, but aside from getting a total buzz I think its pretty helpless. I've opted to slather it with product for the next couple weeks while it grows back out and then to find a different shop to spend my money. OK, so I have been going to BU for 3 years and when I moved here I had to find a barber shop because I keep my hair short. I have been going to see Rino at University Barber Shop for some time. Great haircut, great laughs, TVs on the walls... The other day I was in a rush and there was a bit of a wait so I ducked out and went to Louie's down the block. What a terrible move that was. My barber was inexperienced. The staff wasn't welcoming at all. It was awkward because the kid (without a barbers licence, I'm sure) wasn't friendly at all. OK, so Louie's a a little bit cheaper, but that still doesn't make it even close to worth it. I feel like a complete donkey for going to see Louie, and I can promise I will never make that mistake twice. read more

Went to this barber shop because the louie's next door was closed. Always go to louie's over this. Not only is University barber shop more expensive but the staff is rude, inconsiderate, talks over the phone while giving the haircut, doesn't put time and thought on the haircut and is generally not concerned about giving a good customer service. The barber literally spent 5 mins on the haircut while speaking via earhones the entire time. The hair was not done properly but I felt uncomfortable asking for any request because the barber just responded annoyingly to my very first request. Definitely go to louie's cheaper and more friendly. I have had bad haircut experience before but I have never had such bad customer experience. If I could give a lower rating than this I would have. read more
